Supreme Court Ruins Rick Perry’s Murder Train Party Fun Time

by Kirsten Boyd Johnson  10:30 am September 16, 2011

Other weird part: the guy who ordered the stay of execution? Antonin Scalia.Texas pays a cushy full-time salary to a sociopathic weirdo who wears a shellacked feather boa toupee around on his head all the time to make sure Texas executes as many of its citizens as possible, and normally this guy, Rick Perry, he is the best state murder party planner in the country. NOT TODAY! The United States Supreme Court of Ruining the Fun ordered Texas to stay the execution of one of its black citizens, all because Texas gave him the death penalty specifically for being black. Uh, that is the point?

From the AP:

The [U.S. Supreme Court] on Thursday halted the execution for Duane Buck, 48, two hours into a six-hour window when he could have been taken to the death chamber. Texas officials, however, did not move forward with the punishment while legal issues were pending.

Buck was sentenced to death for the fatal shootings of his ex-girlfriend and a man in her apartment in July 1995. His attorneys had asked both the Supreme Court and Texas Gov. Rick Perry to halt the execution because of a psychologist’s testimony that black people were more likely to commit violence. Buck’s guilt is not being questioned, but his lawyers contend the testimony unfairly influenced the jury and Buck should receive a new sentencing hearing.

Rick “the state of Texas has a very thoughtful, very clear process in place for executing people” Perry was in Iowa this whole time all set to ignore the requests of this guy’s lawyers, just like his job description requires him to. Don’t look at him on this one. [AP]

Hooray for exploding teabagger heads!

fuflans September 16, 2011 at 11:02 am

he should pray for death.

Not_So_Much September 16, 2011 at 11:28 am

What do they wear in lieu of black armbands to show sadness at a death avoided?

chicken_thief September 16, 2011 at 12:00 pm

They'll just drag him behind a pickup truck if he ever gets free – to show their sadness that he wasn't executed, of course.

Madfall September 16, 2011 at 10:33 am

Every time I see this gun-toting picture of Perry I want to see a photoshopped version with him in Pennywise the clown makeup. That would give a clearer impression of his character, especially with a 'Y so serious?' tagline.

Terry September 16, 2011 at 10:35 am

We need a photoshopped image of him tossing a lasso around a goat, because that's what he is. A damn goat roper.

Barb September 16, 2011 at 10:39 am

Goat "raper" – fixed. You're welcome.

HedonismBot September 16, 2011 at 10:48 am

Makes more sense then those ridiculous "Obama = Joker" pictures.

prommie September 16, 2011 at 11:13 am

I can't imagine anything could be clearer than that picture.

memzilla September 16, 2011 at 10:33 am

…the state of Texas has a very thoughtful, very clear process in place for executing people…

Yes, it's called a Pantone® PMS Color Chart.

tcaalaw September 16, 2011 at 10:48 am

Whew, I'm lighter than "rustic drab," so I should be safe!

Lascauxcaveman September 16, 2011 at 11:30 am

That's a helpful chart. I fell in between "Gin Blossom Pink" and "Morning After Grey."

That probably puts in the solid majority of Wonketteers.

Moonbatting Average September 16, 2011 at 12:16 pm

"Irish Flu Green" here.

Unfortunately, being amongst "the solid majority of Wonketeers" means that we are gonna be some of the first up against the wall.

BerkeleyBear September 16, 2011 at 11:15 am

I thought it was just a good old Piggly-Wiggly bag (or whichever chain is the lightest shade of brown).

Sparky_McGruff September 16, 2011 at 11:18 am

Now I'm wondering about John Boehner. Are people of the orange persuasion safe?

HistoriCat September 16, 2011 at 11:21 am

Hey now – that doesn't take into account the extra points for the mentally challenged or youths, etc. etc. Rick Perry would be just as happy to execute white people – he's willing to kill them all!

WhatTheHeck September 16, 2011 at 11:54 am

Has there been any research done to see if “PMS Glossy Black” gets more executions than “PMS Matte Black?”

OC_Surf_Serf September 16, 2011 at 10:34 am

Perry should read what that Jesus fellow said about Capital Punishment.

prommie September 16, 2011 at 10:49 am

I have long thought that Christianity should update its symbolism, and depict Jesus strapped to an electric chair, instead of nailed to a cross, just so people get the message: Your God was a condemned, executed criminal. Convicted and executed after going through the roman's very thoughtful, clear process for executing people.

Doktor Zoom September 16, 2011 at 10:51 am

Just watched "Paradise Lost," the documentary about the "West Memphis 3" trial…yeah, that's one airtight justice system, all right.

whiskeybaby September 16, 2011 at 2:00 pm

I just watched that too. It's comforting to know you can get 20 years in prison for a crime you didn't commit based on the fact that you look a bit like Antony from Antony and the Johnsons and once listened to metallica.

Chet Kincaid September 16, 2011 at 10:55 am

Jesus' execution was planned and ordered by God as a substitute for executing the rest of us for our sins, so the earthly circumstances of his death don't matter. It was not an injustice that shouldn't have happened, but the only way that God would even consider not letting Satan roast your chestnuts for all eternity. So there's nothing inherent in (evangelical fundie) Christianity that requires drawing an anti-death penalty lesson from the Crucifixion.

HistoriCat September 16, 2011 at 11:21 am

So you're saying that God is a sadistic asshole?

Chet Kincaid September 16, 2011 at 11:33 am

Actually, my comment was written in the voice of Cheney.

horsedreamer_1 September 16, 2011 at 11:24 am

Didn't Jesus compel a death by stoning to be commuted?

Ducksworthy September 16, 2011 at 11:26 am

Thanks a lot Chet. By the way, can you refer me to the genius who established that the beatitudes apply only to the Joos?

Lascauxcaveman September 16, 2011 at 11:42 am

Heh. That's the great thing about the bible. There's so much stuff in there, mistranslated so many times over the centuries that it can be twisted around to serve whatever perverted purpose you care to promote.

No wonder it's history's all-time bestseller.

prommie September 16, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Not that most of it isn't bullshit, but you'd be amazed at how true the texts and translations have remained over so long a period.

ShaveTheWhales September 16, 2011 at 11:49 am

Wow, that is some first class logic-chopping. Since Jesus DIDN'T say, "No man, you shouldn't be executed" to the repentant thief, he therefore supported capital punishment.

I guess the fact that he NEVER said "You shouldn't get high" means that he supported pot legalization.

prommie September 16, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Well if thats what they think, then they better not be eating pork or shrimp or locusts, or else they will be an abomination in the eyes of the lord. Circumscision, also.

Lascauxcaveman September 16, 2011 at 11:33 am

Perry should read what that Jesus fellow said about Capital Punishment.

What makes you think Rick Perry gives half of a shit what Jesus actually said?

Guppy06 September 16, 2011 at 11:44 am

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

I'm sure Perry feels that, were he black, he'd want to be put out of his misery too.

Bonzos_Bed_Time September 16, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Can't read, too busy pushing people out of line to throw that first stone…

Looks like a George Costanza fire drill.

superdave September 16, 2011 at 1:43 pm

"Kill them all, let me sort 'em out."

slithytoves September 16, 2011 at 10:34 am

The Supreme Court did that? What – is it April already?

Barb September 16, 2011 at 10:35 am

Maybe he can find a coyote to shoot tonight just so that he can feel better. He's probably busy with his campaign and will just go to a college football game and shoot the mascot to save time.

nounverb911 September 16, 2011 at 10:46 am

Or the gerbil on trump's head.

Barb September 16, 2011 at 10:56 am

Did you see that the Donald took him out to dinner to Jean-Georges Restaurant? The menu includes:
Fluke Sashimi with Floral Infused Cherries, Carmelized Foie Gras, and Crunchy Rabbit. Yeah, way to look like an everyday cowboy there, Rick.

OC_Surf_Serf September 16, 2011 at 11:02 am

Crunchy Rabbit results from not washing between trix…

elviouslyqueer September 16, 2011 at 11:03 am

That has GOT to be the gayest. menu. ever.

Barb September 16, 2011 at 11:21 am

Yes, Elvis it is very gay. I could just see Perry ordering the crunchy rabbit and calling the server over and in that horrible Bush voice saying, "waiter, there's a hare on my plate."

BerkeleyBear September 16, 2011 at 11:20 am

Well, he had to be just like George, eating the fancy Frenchie food on days of high import (although the souffle shithole W was at when OBL bought has probably since been renamed Freedom Pie Works).

That is food porn, and relatively boring food porn at that. If he was a Dem it would be all over Faux News, but I guess we'll just be left to laugh at him on Wonkette (while wishing we could get a doggy bag).

Barb September 16, 2011 at 11:30 am

Wonder how Sarah feels about being taken to a pizza chain when Rick got taken somewhere nice? I get the feeling that the Palin chicks get taken out to IHOP often. It's not because the guy wants to buy them pancakes either. He wants them out of his trailer so that he can fumigate the place.

freakishlywrong September 16, 2011 at 10:55 am

He could also lower some corporate tax rates or deregulate the shit outta something. That may help as well, poor fella.

OC_Surf_Serf September 16, 2011 at 10:36 am

TeaParty's reaction? They all screamed "STATE'S RIGHTS!!!!!!!"

horsedreamer_1 September 16, 2011 at 10:38 am

Also: the "good hair" of Gov. Good Hair is not Gov. Good Hair's good hair, personally grown from his follicles, but a sewn into place men's weave? & this bald man is the front-runner?

Either, the GOP really does want to take us back to the 50s (at least…) & this is good news for Dwight Eisenhower, or Perry is going to doom his chances with a George Costanza "rageohol" episode.

Doktor Zoom September 16, 2011 at 10:46 am

They only want us to go back to a part of the 50s, like with the segregation and quick executions. The economic prosperity part, but not the high marginal tax rates on the rich or the decent union wages parts, because it is clearly impossible for a nation to ever have job growth when those things exist like they did in the 1950s.

Doktor Zoom September 16, 2011 at 10:38 am

Perry loves to play the tough guy role to the hilt, even when it comes to executing innocent people.

You could say that he's a thoroughly Willing ham

prommie September 16, 2011 at 10:52 am

Well, hell, anyone can execute guilty people, that don't prove nothing. Perry is so law and order, he is in favor of executing innocent people, that's Texas justice! They might be innocent of the crime they were convicted of, but I am sure they done something.

weejee September 16, 2011 at 11:03 am

Far better to kill some innocents that let one guilty go free. But hey, Willingham was a brown and we know what the good Tejas official shrink thinks about browns now don't we? Yep, yep.

/ nods too much and ten gallon hat falls off two gallon head

whaja mean Willingham wuz white????

Doktor Zoom September 16, 2011 at 11:56 am

Well, he didn't grieve the way people thought he shoulda grieved, so he was clearly a murderer. Would he have been accused if he was innocent, I ask you?

Biel_ze_Bubba September 16, 2011 at 12:45 pm

Don't matter if the guy's innocent … he was convicted, which in Texas means that morality and conscience are suspeneded, therefore it's OK to kill him, if only for sport. This is the logic that Bush used, and Perry is right there with him.

TanzbodenKoenig September 16, 2011 at 10:39 am

Also, slightly OT, but i just noticed Spanky has 4 accounts now that visit mine on a daily basis. Does this guy seriously have nothing better to do but sit in his mom's basement and cyberstalk us all day? He can even get his cheap thrills downfisting anymore

Lascauxcaveman September 16, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Or is it the freude that schadens itself? I can never remember.

That's a good point. Going back to the original German: the schaden is the unhappiness and the freude is the joy part. So I guess it all depends on whether you're a glass-half-empty, a glass-half-full or a hey!-somebody-stole-my-glass kind of guy.

Goonemeritus September 16, 2011 at 11:38 am

I count at least five identities. On the other hand we should feel proud that we are keeping this guy so occupied. Every moment his impotent rage is sated doing this is a moment we keep him from planning a Norway style attack.

I'm assuming that at the next Republican primary debate the candidates will fall over themselves to declare that they won't nominate liberal pantywaist justices who do things like staying executions over incredibly inflammatory and prejudicial statements by the prosecution's witnesses during sentencing.

elviouslyqueer September 16, 2011 at 10:57 am

Especially liberal activist pantywaist justices like Antonin Scalia.

Rick Perry's story about shooting a coyote in his pajamas is shady if you ask me. I live in a neigborhood where those sneaky fuckers are all over the place and, unless Rick's middle name is Mannlicher Carcano, I doubt seriously if he could come close to hitting one of them. They're smart, don't look for trouble and make themselves known only when there's a hamster or chihuahua around.

That's the thing, though: Perry always carries a hamster in his rectum. It's what he means when he says he's "packing."

It sounds downright treasonous, to me, to go around suggesting black people AREN'T more violent than white people. Its giving aid and comfort to the enemy right in the middle of this race war we are fighting. We know how to treat that kind of supreme court justice down in Texas.

GuyClinch September 16, 2011 at 10:46 am

Darn, if this Duane Buck had actually been innocent, like Cameron Todd Willingham, then the court wouldn't have intervened and the super-fun execution disco could have gone off without a hitch. http://nyr.kr/dvEOey

prommie September 16, 2011 at 10:58 am

Scalia settled that issue long ago, when he held that actual innocense is not grounds to halt an execution. As long as the "process" was adhered to.

charlesdegoal September 16, 2011 at 10:47 am

Actually, Scalia relied on originalism to find that Texas did not exist and now accordingly therefore could not be permitted to kill a black buck.

The only moral quandary the favorite candidate of the party of the Republican "Let him die" Party would have is if she were a woman, and had gotten knocked up by some prison guard. On second thought, he'd just give her a stay until it was safe to get the kid out via cesarean. Then she'd fry and her baby would immediately go into foster care and grow up to be just like her mom.

That's as merciful as the Party of Death would care to be.

"…a psychologist’s testimony that black people were more likely to commit violence."

I can't fathom how that fits in to the "thoughtful process". It seems more like a thoughtless process — black = violent = guilty = hang him.

But suppose we applied the "more likely" principle elsewhere. Imagine a Texan on trial here in Connecticut with the prosecution arguing "Texans are more likely to commit violence". If the Stetson fits, you must convict.

mumbly_joe September 18, 2011 at 3:39 am

How could it not be a thoughtful process, though? I mean, the guy said, in his testimony, that it was "because of complicated reasons". What more evidence do you need, really?

Re – the psychologist’s testimony that black people were more likely to commit violence.

Pale face Rick Perry has presided over 234 executions during his tenure as governor which makes him the most violent son of a bitch in Texas. Or possibly the psychologist would testify that Perry's coming down with a bad case of negro.

mavenmaven September 16, 2011 at 11:50 am

He'll profit from this, unfortunately. They will go back, resentence this man to death, and then Perry will photo-op his throwing the switch to the cheers of his ever-more-fascist campaign followers, probably with some line about how he'll do this to Bernanke.

Dr_Zoidberg September 16, 2011 at 11:59 am

I get such a 'Greg Stillson' vibe from Rick Perry…

proudgrampa September 16, 2011 at 12:15 pm

*Sigh* It's the 21st century and we still have capital punishment. And we have proof that it is not imposed fairly. I haz a sad.

comrad_darkness September 16, 2011 at 12:26 pm

Let me guess, Clarence Thomas wants him tortured and THEN executed.

DemonicRage September 16, 2011 at 12:38 pm

I'm still stunned after seeing the replay of the start of the last Republican candidate debate. I had missed the beginning. If the way that Rick Perry stands as that screech woman mangles "The Star Spangled Banner" doesn't yell "psycopath" to you, then you aren't looking at it clearly. What does he have, a f**kin flagpole rammed up his ass?

OneYieldRegular September 16, 2011 at 1:07 pm

To put Rick Perry's homicidal tendencies in perspective, the Guardian has prepared this rather horrific interactive piece that suggests Perry's reaction to the Supreme Court today is going to be along the lines of "Bah. Plenty more where that came from."

who is the real victim here?

wait, what is the real victim here?

ttommyunger September 16, 2011 at 1:26 pm

Scalia and Company are just joining Little Ricky in their game of cat and mouse. You know, the one where they don't kill the prey until it has had the last ounce of energy and hope drained from it by the drip, drip, drip of constant terror and torture. Sweet dreams, Pilgrims.

“the state of Texas has a very thoughtful, very clear process in place for executing black and brown people”

Fixed.

Lionel[redacted]Esq September 16, 2011 at 1:52 pm

Other things the psychologist has testified to:

1) Black people are more likely to dance well.

2) Black people just want a warm place to shit.

3) Black people get the blues.

mumbly_joe September 18, 2011 at 3:34 am

4) Black people walk like this, and white people walk like this.

"Very thoughtful, very clear process in place for executing people

= YEEE HAAAW!!! plus Celebratory Gunfire

Those old fussbudgets, the United States Supreme Court …

Negropolis September 17, 2011 at 2:01 am

He's leaving, on that murder train to Texas…

Negropolis September 17, 2011 at 2:17 am

I think folks tend to forget that for as conservative as the court is, it's now has a Catholic majority (and no Protestants), and the Jews are Democrats, so if any court was to ever stay an execution (and who knows, maybe eventually ban capital punishment), it would actually be this crazy court.

Chet Kincaid September 17, 2011 at 10:01 am

And we all know how seriously the average American Catholic takes the Church's teachings!

Negropolis September 17, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Enough where it we're actually closer to seeing a more discerning court on this issue than ever before if even it's still a long shot, smart ass.

Chet Kincaid September 18, 2011 at 2:53 am

What the fuck is with the "smart ass"? The Conservative Catholics on the Supreme Court aren't going to go with a "liberal" opinion on capital punishment just because the Pope says so. Scalia believes the death penalty is constitutional and won't hear otherwise; Kennedy has upheld it in many specific cases; and the Supreme Court overturned one of Alito's death-dealing rulings before he joined it. Roberts is the only one who might be "squishy" on the issue.

HistoriCat September 16, 2011 at 12:02 pm

It's a lot more creepy that way. And since Cheney is a sadistic asshole, it all makes sense.
