Americans Still Mysteriously Blame Bush for Terrible Economy

by Kirsten Boyd Johnson

Well, here is what the librul pundits call a “bright spot” of news for Barack Obama, because despite the fact that almost 9 in 10 Americans can correctly identify the economy as a putrid rat carcass infected with colonies of soul-eating viruses, they can by a wide majority also still (MIRACULOUSLY, WE ARE IMPRESSED) correctly remember that the economic meltdown was one of the final George W. Bush poop sandwiches Patriot-missiled into the American people’s throats. Too bad Dubya isn’t around to never, ever be elected again, ever, or Obama might win this thing!

The survey found that 86 percent of adults see the economy as “poor,” up from 80 percent in June. About half — 49 percent — said it worsened just in the past month. Only 27 percent responded that way in the June survey.

That can’t be good news for a president revving up his re-election campaign. Yet there are several hopeful signs for Obama.

Despite the perception of a weakening recovery, there has been no significant change in the number of people who say he deserves re-election: 47 percent as opposed to 48 percent two months ago. That’s a statistical dead heat with those who favor a change in the White House.

And more Americans still blame former President George W. Bush rather than Obama for the economic distress. Some 31 percent put the bulk of the blame on Obama, while 51 percent point to his Republican predecessor.

Proof that people aren't quite as dumb as the GOP hopes they are. Of course almost 1/3 blame Obama so there is the Republican hardcore the candidates are fighting to impress.

Biel_ze_Bubba August 25, 2011 at 3:37 pm

Fine – let the teatard candidates impress 1/3 of the voters. The more you impress those morons, the more the other 2/3 are inclined to think you're a hopeless douchebag.

Swampgas_Man August 25, 2011 at 5:37 pm

That's more-or-less the same percent that luuuuuuvved Bush, even during his final crash-and-burn. Probably the same people, too.

Barb August 25, 2011 at 3:21 pm

"The survey found that 86 percent of adults see the economy as “poor,”
14% think the economy is booming? They don't seem to be reaching far enough into the clue bag.

SexySmurf August 25, 2011 at 3:26 pm

I'm guessing that 14% includes banksters, pawn shop owners and Palins.

SorosBot August 25, 2011 at 3:29 pm

And repo men; things have got to be great for them.

horsedreamer_1 August 25, 2011 at 3:41 pm

This is Good News for Forrest Whitaker & Jude Law!

&, alternately, Emilio Estevez.

BaldarTFlagass August 25, 2011 at 3:46 pm

It's pretty intense.

RedneckMuslin August 25, 2011 at 3:55 pm

Don't forget job creators.

DaRooster August 25, 2011 at 3:27 pm

Should only be 1-2%…

One_who_wanders August 25, 2011 at 3:30 pm

They have a convoluted way of asking this question- only 1% think it is very good and 4% good and a further 5% Lean good. See http://www.ap-gfkpoll.com/pdf/AP-GfK%20Poll%20Aug... for the gory details.

Mahousu August 25, 2011 at 3:30 pm

Maybe it is booming for that 14%. How many Koch brothers were there again?

Callyson August 25, 2011 at 5:24 pm

14% think the economy is booming?
What percent of the population is drunk or stoned off its ass at any given moment? Or completely insane?
That might explain it…can't think of anything else…

Swampgas_Man August 25, 2011 at 5:38 pm

14% chose the term, "Sucky".

ibwilliamsi August 31, 2011 at 1:29 pm

I'm pretty sure that only 1.8% should see the economy as "booming". The other 12.2% who think the economy is booming are certifiably insane.

SorosBot August 25, 2011 at 3:26 pm

They forgot the other hopeful sign for Obama's re-election: the Republican candidates.

Crank_Tango August 25, 2011 at 4:42 pm

Too soon!

Radiotherapy® August 25, 2011 at 3:28 pm

Maybe a hurricane will help.

not that Dewey August 25, 2011 at 3:46 pm

You never want serious atmospheric instability to go to waste.

ProgressiveInga August 25, 2011 at 3:57 pm

Wind Doctrine!

weejee August 25, 2011 at 4:35 pm

Irene may give 'Murica an economic blow job.

Wind Libel!

Come here a minute August 25, 2011 at 4:53 pm

Throw in an earthquake and you might have something.

DaRooster August 25, 2011 at 3:29 pm

It still eludes me as to how anyone can think that Obama got us into this mess in a little less than 2 years…
And then I remember… he's black… must be doing that "Economic Downfall" dance

Swampgas_Man August 25, 2011 at 5:39 pm

Dat ol' Black magic.

MonsterAGoGo August 25, 2011 at 9:16 pm

Cue GOoPers making a photoshop of the Pres as a tribal chief dancing in 3… 2… 1…
I predict a yellow MSPaint arrow at Barack's nose and the words "HE'S WAERING REAGANS FINGR BONE".

baconzgood August 25, 2011 at 3:31 pm

You can't really blame Bush though. I mean he was rarely at work.

Biel_ze_Bubba August 25, 2011 at 3:39 pm

Yeah — he fucked over the most powerful country on earth while hardly breaking a sweat. Thank god for all that brush that needed clearin'.

BaldarTFlagass August 25, 2011 at 3:47 pm

The shame of it all is, if you go by that ranch today, all that brush has just stone cold grown right the fuck back to where it was.

weejee August 25, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Yeah, if Condi had kept all the Golliwoggs in line, and not fapping in the fig trees, the economy woulda never tanked.

Negropolis August 26, 2011 at 5:31 am

It was a lazy faire economy, all right.

Lucidamente1 August 25, 2011 at 3:35 pm

It's nice for once to see Americans treat a Texan ugly.

SayItWithWookies August 25, 2011 at 3:52 pm

I'd like to see a Dutch court do the same.

DahBoner September 3, 2011 at 10:25 pm

Some Haig pajamas would look nice on him, trading packs of cigarettes for his life in some dank prison bathroom…

MonsterAGoGo August 25, 2011 at 9:17 pm

He had a head start on ugly. Like from the moment he shlurmfed out of that accursed womb all grey and misshapen.

Sue4466 August 25, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Must be the power of low expectations, but I admit to being a bit surprised American's have such good memories and can even remember who was president 2 years ago, let alone what he did to fuck things up so badly.

Apparently, the media needs more sex scandals or missing white children stories to throw folks off the scent.

johnnyzhivago August 25, 2011 at 3:36 pm

OK, 51% blame the economy on Bush – problem is 51% also blames 9/11 on Obama.

horsedreamer_1 August 25, 2011 at 3:42 pm

9/11 was Clinton's [fault], & her husband is still in the White House. Obviously, the Democrats are to blame.

metamarcisf August 25, 2011 at 3:38 pm

The poll was taken by the marxists at the Associated Press which is American for "Tass News Agency"

horsedreamer_1 August 25, 2011 at 3:43 pm

Wasn't that sometimes called ITAR-Tass? (Not to be confused with the new line of Apple tablets for the special kids in the TEA Party, the iTARD.)

Biel_ze_Bubba August 25, 2011 at 3:42 pm

So Obama is in a dead heat with "generic Republican candidate". I think he'll do well against "actual teabagger-ass-licking Republican candidate."

MonsterAGoGo August 25, 2011 at 9:19 pm

Is the teabagger actually teabagging the Repub? If so, I mean, the ass is right there, why fight the Republican politican's universal urge for mantaint?

Callyson August 25, 2011 at 3:42 pm

Obama also fares better than Congress in the blame department. Some 44 percent put "a lot" or "most" of the blame on Republicans while 36 percent point to congressional Democrats.
44% down, 56% to go…

gullywompr August 25, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Of course Americans blame Bush – we were there to watch the whole thing.

Biel_ze_Bubba August 27, 2011 at 9:39 am

I would be careful about admitting to being a witness, while Cheney is still at large.

not that Dewey August 25, 2011 at 3:47 pm

Why do 51% of Americans hate America?

ManchuCandidate August 25, 2011 at 3:53 pm

I'm still waiting for the brilliance of Tax Cuts to rich people, financial deregulation and hand jobs from the Invisible Hand to save all of us from Economic ruin.

chicken_thief August 25, 2011 at 4:06 pm

While you are waiting, you don't mind giving up your collective bargaining, some medical benefits, and future pay raises, do you? You know, 'cause we all have to tighten our belts….

SayItWithWookies August 25, 2011 at 3:54 pm

This just means that FOX Criminal Enterprises has a lot more stupidificatin' to do.

Schmannnity August 25, 2011 at 4:05 pm

This is good news for future revolutionaries.

Lionel[redacted]Esq August 25, 2011 at 4:06 pm

Every Democrat must remember the following three simple points:

1) We tried tax cuts for the Rich and deregulation. That is what got us here.

2) Things were getting better while the stimulus plan was going. Once that money dried up, things started to slow down.

3) Those who cost us (banks, Wall St., the Rich), should be the ones that pay the majority of the cost of getting us out of this mess. Balance the budget on the back of those who have taken the most, not those who need the most..

ManchuCandidate August 25, 2011 at 4:10 pm

You're right, but good luck getting Assholes, I mean, Blue Dogs like Ben Nelson to agree with that.

emmelemm August 25, 2011 at 4:18 pm

I believe that's what they call "the nutshell".

Doktor Zoom August 25, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Or maybe "Class Warfare"

Swampgas_Man August 25, 2011 at 5:43 pm

But– but the "poor" don't hardly pay any income tax at all, because the lucky duckies have no income! And lots of 'em have refrigerators and tvs and even cell phones!

No shit, this was an actual letter-to-the-editor presented in my dead tree news this morning. By Gawd, if it wasn't for the comics page. . . .

Gleem_McShineys August 25, 2011 at 7:56 pm

Oh what a relief! For a while I thought all those think-tank man-hours that was put into developing that "study" might have gone to waste, but thankfully, it has done its wonderful work and spawned another zombie poopeater! Long live the braineating virus!

Doktor Zoom August 25, 2011 at 8:38 pm

Funny thing, Jon Stewart just addressed the question of how much revenue we could get from those greedy Poors:
http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-august-18-2...

(Golly, you'd almost think the letter to the editor was dictated by FauxNews…)

Lionel[redacted]Esq August 25, 2011 at 4:07 pm

I'm sure, in the interest of being fair and balanced, this poll will get a lot of play on FOX News. I'll just hold my breath until it is mentioned.

jus_wonderin August 25, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Breathe, breathe, dammit!!!!! He's dead Jim.

imissopus August 26, 2011 at 1:16 am

It's been nine hours. Are you dead yet?

Biel_ze_Bubba August 27, 2011 at 9:45 am

It's gonna be a lot longer than that. But so what … he's dead forever, right?

chicken_thief August 25, 2011 at 4:10 pm

On a serious note, those results surprise me. Seems to me that I've seen thousands of cartoons and heard as many comments berating the Kenyan Messiah that start with "Bank Bailouts". Maybe there is hope for us after all?!

jus_wonderin August 25, 2011 at 4:15 pm

"thousands of cartoons and heard as many comments"

To Big to Fail?

jus_wonderin August 25, 2011 at 4:10 pm

But, but, but…what about ObamaMotors???

Doktor Zoom August 25, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Oh, hey, that reminds me of the usefulness of this absolutely essential Chart That Should Accompany All Discussions of the Debt Ceiling.

not that Dewey August 25, 2011 at 4:24 pm

That never gets old. I printed one at work and just left it sitting by the printer for a couple weeks until some RWer found it and threw it away.

emmelemm August 25, 2011 at 4:33 pm

The life of trees is cheap. Print one per day, if necessary.

arihaya August 25, 2011 at 4:38 pm

BREAKING: the stupid 31 percent who blamed Obama for the economic crisis also credited Bush for the killing of Osama bin Laden

widestanceshakedown August 25, 2011 at 4:49 pm

It was really white of Bush to kill OBL, since 9/11 was his predecessor's fault.

widestanceshakedown August 25, 2011 at 4:47 pm

I also still blame Bush for 9/11 and the thousands upon thousands of deaths resulting from his war president affectations.

Wonderthing August 25, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Early days. The "I Can't Remember Who Got Us Into This But Oh My God, There's A Black Man Trying To Rob Me" machine has yet to really rev up. Just wait.

DahBoner August 25, 2011 at 5:03 pm

Just goes to show you, you should never eat that second piece of ganja fudge, just because you are hungry…

hagajim August 25, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Does the putrid rat carcass that is America's economy also have a dangly pair of sweaty Cantors (rat testicles) hanging from its corpse?

hagajim August 25, 2011 at 5:13 pm

Maybe….just maybe, Americans aren't as stupid as I thought…nah – they'll still vote for Rick (asshole) Perry.

BarackMyWorld August 25, 2011 at 6:36 pm

People who point to the precedent that Hoover didn't get re-elected despite economic troubles' had their origin in policies from before he took office as president seem to forget he was Sec. of Commerce for 8 years prior to becoming president. And the number one priority of the Commerce Dept. under Hoover was to total do whatever helped big business. Obama wasn't a member of an prior administration, so he gets a pass.

SorosBot August 25, 2011 at 7:43 pm

Though I've often wondered why history books always give Coolidge a pass on the whole causing the Great Depression thing and just pin it all on Hoover.

KenLayIsAlive August 25, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Meanwhile, 50% of Americans are preparing for the 10th Anniversary of the 9-11 Iraqi terror attack on America.

MonsterAGoGo August 25, 2011 at 9:23 pm

A yearly bicycle tour in our area is having its event this year on 9-11. The event's name? "Dry Run". Maybe this year they could have picked a different name or date. For me it brings back memories of hearing about (and possibly seeing, I will never know for sure) the eventual hijackers making "test trips" beforehand.

Biel_ze_Bubba August 26, 2011 at 6:12 pm

Yay. I'll bake a cake.

snoopyfan2010 August 25, 2011 at 7:22 pm

This is good news for Joe Biden.

fuflans August 26, 2011 at 12:26 am

meh. dems will fuck it up somehow.

Negropolis August 26, 2011 at 5:39 am

Looks like the noise machine hasn't been cranked up loud enough, 'cause all we ever hear is how much trouble the president's in.

I still think the president has a few tricks up his sleeve. I'd not at all be surprised to see Biden switched out with Hillary if stuff starts to get real bad despite the incessent denial.

Rayn_And August 26, 2011 at 1:07 pm

…but each time you blame a Republican…the terrorists win.

emeryannharris August 26, 2011 at 1:37 pm

So, 51% of American remember who was president in 2007?

DahBoner September 3, 2011 at 10:19 pm

1776: "Facts are stubborn things"–John Adams

1976: " Facts are stupid things"–Ronald Reagan

VeritasAmerican August 31, 2011 at 5:15 pm

So after 3 years things have only become worse is Bush's fault? How about the fault of Fannie and Freddie who gave mortgages to those who didn't deserve them and created the bubble in the first place? How about Wall Street and the Harvard and Yale folks at Goldman Sachs who created financial products out of these crappy mortgages? How about the excessive government regulation that makes it hard to do business?

DahBoner September 3, 2011 at 10:17 pm

Way back in the early 00's, every Republican I asked told me that Bush was smart enough to represent their interests.

Now, they've barely even heard of 'em, "never really liked 'em".

//snort, snort

OLDSHEEPHERDER September 4, 2011 at 12:09 am

With their unfettered greed blinding them, zealous fundamentalist Christian doctrine intoxicating them, they were obliviousness to the Geo-political consequences of destabilizing Iraq. Bush and the Wrecking Crew proceeded to finish dismantling our financial oversight and regulation system then passed an unfunded drug program along with gross tax-cuts for the wealthy. Bin Laden lit the fire on September 11. Bush and his wrecking crew were easily manipulated by Bin Laden to finish his work for him. Bin Laden's objective was to wreck financial ruin on the United States. The tea party is mindlessly spewing the same 'no talk do as I say' crap and policies from the Bush era and consequently carries on Bin Laden's mission after his death. Us taxpayers would be pleased if all unstable religious zelot ignoramuses would leave government now.

SayItWithWookies August 25, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Biel_ze_Bubba August 27, 2011 at 9:44 am

Half of everything the poor own, versus 2% of what the rich plan to add to their wealth in a single year (over and above a quarter million bucks.)

That's a tough call, if you're a Republican. ( Just joking — it's an easy call on a no-compromise issue.)
