"Thanks for the downgrade, you should all be fired" are the words written on this difficult-to-see super mysterious hero "tweet in real life" that flew over the offices of Standard and Poors today in New York City. HAS SOMEONE COME TO SAVE GOTHAM?
Wishful thinking! It was just someone who is as sick of these fake financial problems as everyone else, but withmoremoney. After a flurry of excitement in the blahgosphere, Fortune figured out the banner was flown by a stock broker from Missouri who apparently still has enough disposable income after the market crash yesterday to communicate some populist rage in the direction of our dithering elite:
Fortune has learned that the person who paid to fly the banner is a Midwestern broker, who woke up last night with the need to vent at those who she believes are leading the nation into an economic morass.
"I originally wanted to fly it over Washington, D.C., but learned that you can't do that," says the banker, who asked to remain anonymous for job security reasons. "So I chose Wall Street instead, but didn't specifically intend it to fly over S&P. I'm just a mother from St. Louis who feels the only reason we got downgraded was people in politics."
The pilot was Matthew Applegate, of a New Jersey-based company called Aerial Sign North. He did not pick up the phone, but a competitor suggests that such a flight would run between $1,200 and $1,500.
Of course the Negative Nancies (which means bored office people using Twitter) are all, "where wuz ur banner when S&P gave AAA ratings to toxic mortgage-backed securities???" Which is probably a good point, but given that we have never been able to afford health care coverage, we'll take any kind of "rage therapy" we can get. [ TwitPic / Fortune ]
I can't believe you all forgot about the Ron Paul balloon? I waited all bundled up on the roof for days. Waiting and waiting.
And pocket constitutionz.
