The AA group has been quite helpful. There's somebody I know from work (I live in a very small University town, so it was inevitable), who's sort of an elder statesman, 35 years sober, and he has been my birdwatching guru for a few years now. Now he and I have something else in common.
I'm finding now that I have quite a bit more time on my hands — time that I must have been wasting. For the first couple weeks, this led to some REALLY long days, where I wasn't sure how to pass the time, which was hard. Now it just feels like time.
Also, apparently, my intestinal flora had become accustomed to a different, ahem, alkalinity, shall we say, than they are enjoying now. Still waiting for that to turn around.

Actually, I felt the same exact way. And to be perfectly honest, I agree with all politicians who make the claim that children are off limits, its just unfortunate that most then turn around and use them as flat-faced props. I think we, as simple tax-paying, blog commenting citizens have a unique ability to make jokes about most anything, regardless of whether or not its appropriate, but journalists, especially those wishing to be taken seriously, have a responsibility to cover the story in as respectful a manner as possible. If Rahm-rod says his kids are off limits, and does so without calling you a fucking retard, chances are good that you have simply pushed the wrong button and have been given the opportunity to retreat and save face.
All in all, Rahm is a dick, which I think is part of his charm, but he handled this situation rather appropriately and CNN is just a fourth-rate cable news network trying to ramp up ratings. This stirs awful memories of something I saw in Havana back in 1998. Multiculturalism is an all-or-nothing proposition. He and the baggers seem to have discarded the notion of political thought as a continuum in favor of this view that there are two islands of thought — one containing him, and the other containing Marxists, Nazis, multiculturalists, humanists, internationalists, gays, the "ultra-left", and Muslims.

Even more tragic than simply losing someone so talented, though, and even more generally in a death like this, is either that the person didn't know how much they were loved, or they knew it and it wasn't enough for them, it wasn't enough to save them.
God, how incredibly senseless a loss. I'll be listening to Frank, all night, and I hope that others do to. Just because it wasn't a surprise doesn't make it any easier to prepare for an unexpected or premature death.

So horrible, and so weird that we can grieve someone who had no idea what a big chunk of our mental / emotional world they inhabit. As one fan to another, my thoughts are with you.

I am not too much different from you (as far as I understand you). I like to believe that I'm results-oriented. In the last decade or so, I've come to desire a bit more confrontation from Democrats, in response to the utter intractability of the Republicans. I honestly do not know if this is the right response, but it is how I feel.
I have also come to have a quite low opinion of Rahm Emanuel. The low opinion is not so much due to his political positions (D- Wishy); as to the misrepresentation of him as a decisive, powerful driver of opinion and votes. In my opinion (and this is, of course, just my opinion) he didn't do fuck-all as COS.
Nevertheless, I will readily agree that public vs private school is a personal decision, and considering the sad state of many of our public schools (which sad state is NOT Rahm's fault), a tricky one.
Nevrthenevertheless, I will ask you. user-of-owls, why you care so much about the media treatment of a guy who cannot any longer be considered more than an apparatchik. It isn't going to have any impact on his political fortunes. Perhaps he'll prove to be an adequate mayor (the odds against an outstanding Mayor of Chicago are prohibitive). Perhaps not. This kerfuffle will have microscopic effect. Who cares? Why do you care?
