With 45 Million Americans On Food Stamps, GOP Will Cut Food Stamps

by Wonkette Jr.

Eat some more liberty! The number of Americans relying on federal help to get food has been climbing for years now, with 45 million people and 21 million households currently dependent on the program. It’s not just the unemployed relying on the vouchers — seniors, veterans, school children and the disabled are among the groups hit hardest in this Great Recession. And the Republicans in Congress have a great idea that will save money and take care of the hunger problem: Cut America’s “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program” completely so that the hungry people will all die. Win win!

ABC News reports:

The Republicans’ 2012 budget plan proposes changing SNAP from an entitlement to a block-grant program that would be tailored for each individual state, much like their proposal for Medicaid. States would no longer receive open-ended subsidies and the aid would be contingent on work or job training. It would also limit funding for the program.

It’s time that disabled veterans and near-death seniors and dumb impoverished schoolchildren stop living the high life and start appreciating that freedom isn’t free. Also, the state with the highest percentage of people on food relief — New Mexico — plans to immediately stop providing food assistance to seniors and the disabled. Somebody has to put an end to these luxuries. [ABC/New Mexico Independent]

Eat those bootstraps, people.

PsycWench June 1, 2011 at 8:50 am

Deep fried, with ranch dressing on the side.

Delicious w/ Poverty Sauce and hobo beans!

Negropolis June 2, 2011 at 12:26 am

That's pretty difficult when you don't have any boots to begin with…

Barb June 1, 2011 at 8:36 am

Hunger is the great incentive!

Swampgas_Man June 1, 2011 at 10:19 am

Eat the Rich!

Isn't this how the French Revolution started?

ArmoredBore June 1, 2011 at 1:14 pm

I'd say "Let them eat cake," but they probably can't afford anything other than that hydrogenated box crap, if that.

Amigut September 29, 2011 at 4:39 pm

What do you say when there will be in old age?

Barb June 1, 2011 at 8:38 am

When life gives you lemons, shut up and eat your lemons.
Love, the GOP

BaldarTFlagass June 1, 2011 at 8:46 am

Take chicken shit, make chicken salad.

riverside68 June 1, 2011 at 8:51 am

Salad is supported by Michelle Obama-Ayers thus is part of the commie agenda.

I say eat the chicken shit as is, and you better be smiling when you do!

samsuncle June 1, 2011 at 8:53 am

Would that be a shit eating grin?

DashboardBuddha June 1, 2011 at 8:58 am

Too bad the GOP doesn't know the difference between chicken shit and chicken salad.

CapeClod June 1, 2011 at 9:18 am

Let a smile be your umbrela, then use it to beat the shit out of Eric Cantor.

user-of-owls June 1, 2011 at 9:48 am

Lemons cost money. Shut up and eat your goddamn rocks.

Cicada June 1, 2011 at 11:27 am

Boil those rocks in polluted creek water, add a little lawn clippings from a CEO's lawn, and yum-yum! You've got GOP gumbo.

mayor_quimby June 1, 2011 at 4:36 pm

Have you bought a lemon lately? They're like 79 cents each! We can't afford that shit.

Geminisunmars June 1, 2011 at 11:14 am

Scurvey free poverty!!11! Yay!

Not_So_Much June 1, 2011 at 12:54 pm

GOP = Lemon Party?

WhatTheHolyHeck June 1, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Unless they're armored tactical field lemons that cost $2.5 billion apiece for Lockheed Martin to manufacture, in which case, we'll need another 50 cartons.

Negropolis June 2, 2011 at 12:27 am

Barb, that was just brilliant.

BaldarTFlagass June 1, 2011 at 8:38 am

Please, sir, can I have some more?

baconzgood June 1, 2011 at 9:06 am

No. Go fuck yourself.

Sincerely,

Negropolis June 2, 2011 at 12:31 am

Sincerely,

P.S. Also.

FraAnima June 1, 2011 at 9:22 am

The GOP is looking for a world somewhere between Dickensian London and the Gilded Age. Plenty of debtor prisons and workhouses to supply willing servants to the rich.

CapeClod June 1, 2011 at 9:29 am

Please, sir, can I have anything?

BaldarTFlagass June 1, 2011 at 10:07 am

You'll get nothing! And like it!!

Of course they want to cut food stamps; the Republicans can't stand the fact that the unquestionable greatest President of the 20th Century, and perhaps ever, was a liberal Democrat (and one who couldn't even walk) and so are trying to do everything they can to destroy his legacy.

DaRooster June 1, 2011 at 9:27 am

Then W could take that spot…

horsedreamer_1 June 1, 2011 at 9:32 am

Plus, he was extraordinarily wealthy, but not a smug, self-serving asshole. FDR made/makes all the modern Gooper Plutocrats look bad.

Doktor Zoom June 1, 2011 at 10:01 am

Hey, now–Lyndon Johnson could walk…

Fox n Fiends June 1, 2011 at 12:01 pm

They believe that Herbert Hoover was framed.

Starving the Hungreez to death to solve the hunger problem. Genius.

When they're in Hell, I can't wait for the bill's sponsors to ask Satan for a drink of water.

noodlesalad June 1, 2011 at 8:51 am

The Republican Bible consists of three chapters: Genesis (no evolution), Leviticus (no gays), and Revelations (no sense worrying about tomorrow). Forget all that stuff about helping the poors, it's just filler.

MARCdMan June 1, 2011 at 9:00 am

And while you're at it, make sure to throw on another tax break for the ultra-wealthy, don't want to risk them not thinking of you next election.

PsycWench June 1, 2011 at 9:43 am

Their Bible doesn't have any of that "render under Caeser" stuff either

drrty_martini June 1, 2011 at 3:12 pm

They've been working hard to get rid of the first four books of the New Testament. Those words in red are communist!

SarcasticNymph June 4, 2011 at 1:52 am

Yeah, just keep Paul, who hatefucked slaves, women, children, and revolutionaries. Strangely, the Sermon on the Mount, the sentiments of which predominate in the Gospels and are the central tenets of Xty, are absent in the fundies rightwing hatefucking screeds.

Come here a minute June 1, 2011 at 8:40 am

I hope the DC heat has brewed up enough rotten vegetables in the White House garden for FLOTUS to give the House Republicans a good pelting today when they show up to discuss raising the debt limit (i.e., to get lectured by POTUS).

BarryOPotter June 1, 2011 at 9:03 am

The Republicans would turn this place in the Greater North Korea in no time, if given half a chance. Of course, they all see themselves as extended members of the Jong Il family in their power-driven fever-dream, thus they would be the portly few in a sea of emaciated serfs peasants vassals.

Oblios_Cap June 1, 2011 at 8:45 am

If a few of the olds and poors have to die so that rich people don't have to endure the socialist trauma of paying their fair share of taxes, then that's a sacrifice those freeloading bastards should joyfully make.

Stop being a drain on society losers!

riverside68 June 1, 2011 at 8:55 am

As long as there are no death panels involved: people shouldn't be able to ease their way out with drugs!

If people starve on the street, that's just the market at work, it helps incentivise the rest of the slackers researching their employment options.

riverside68 June 1, 2011 at 8:57 am

DaRooster June 1, 2011 at 9:33 am

They get PLENTY of government assistance… tax breaks, subsidies, cash back, etc…

SorosBot June 1, 2011 at 9:43 am

Next, GOP declares the poor don't need food stamps anyway because there are many stray puppies and kittens on the streets and in shelters who they can eat.

GOPCrusher June 1, 2011 at 1:45 pm

No one falls on hard times. They choose to be poor.
These layabouts need to stop depending on their betters for a paycheck and start their own business.

Buckminster June 1, 2011 at 4:53 pm

I think some of the GOP are actually drinking that tea and believing exactly that. It's not true, it has never been true and it will never be true. Sort of like the theory that wealth will trickle down from the rich to the poor. You know, horseshit.

BaldarTFlagass June 1, 2011 at 8:45 am

At least maybe some of them veterans probably had jungle or desert survival school and know how to make a meal out of cactus or liana vines and some snakes and horny toads and shit.

DerrickWildcat June 1, 2011 at 8:48 am

C'mon, tell the whole story now.
That 45 million number doesn't seem so bad when you realize that 38 million of that 45 million are incarcerated in some form or another.

BaldarTFlagass June 1, 2011 at 8:56 am

Or should be. Or will be soon.

Oblios_Cap June 1, 2011 at 8:59 am

Prisons – America's Growth Industry for the 21st Century™.

riverside68 June 1, 2011 at 8:59 am

You are mixing up your 45's. It is a different 45M that are in prison, which is why we can't afford to keep feeding the 45M out of work, but not yet in prison.

GhostBuggy June 1, 2011 at 9:15 am

Wait! If we put the out-of-work in prison for being poor, we don't have to feed them because they're terrible criminals and we are very tough on crime in this country! This problem just solved itself.

You guys all act like governing is hard or something.

Chet Kincaid June 1, 2011 at 9:42 am

UpFistTroll June 1, 2011 at 10:05 am

PsycWench June 1, 2011 at 8:48 am

Why are we surprised? This is the logical next step after "fixing" healthcare by trying to repeal the health care bill. Next up: we will clean air by increasing carbon emissions and we will improve water quality by pissing in wells.

JustPixelz June 1, 2011 at 11:28 am

As the Repubicans exercise the political power they won in the last election, people have a chance to see their vision for America. It's all about the uterus and a safety net for billionaires. While the poor, unemployed, hungry (hungry!) people get to live a 19th century ideal of self-sufficiency in today's age of riches.

Geminisunmars June 1, 2011 at 11:28 am

Think of all the money we could save if we'd substitute left over styrofoam packing-peanuts into bridge construction, instead of that expensive cement.

Monsieur_Grumpe June 1, 2011 at 8:49 am

The Hoover Diet Plan will keep the poors from voting. They'll be too weak to pull their photo IDs out their pockets. Bwhahahaha!

BaldarTFlagass June 1, 2011 at 8:49 am

Don't be so gloomy. After all it's not that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love – they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.

You hungry fucks better get to painting. I wanna see some masterpieces!

zhubajie June 1, 2011 at 8:58 am

Anyone who expect the Reptilian Party to pay for anything artistic is crazier that 2 teapartiers!

HistoriCat June 1, 2011 at 9:26 am

That guy has already done his "good presidents/bad presidents" AND his "Jesus comes back and the good people celebrate" paintings – if those are not masterpieces then I don't know art! Of course you can't get it at BYU.

And then there's the Orly Taitz portrait!

Hey – this is fun! OK, I'll stop now but I didn't even get to the Jeb Bush portrait.

WIDTAP June 1, 2011 at 8:50 am

It's basic economics folks. Fewer people to buy food, food prices come down for the rich. Win, win!

BarryOPotter June 1, 2011 at 9:13 am

This will end in tears: as fewer people buy food, revenue falls pushing prices down, resulting in lower profits for the rich, who will then turn on their lobbyists, who'll get all up in Rep. Whoever's grill, which will bring about even stranger social engineering legislation, that will kill the remaining 200 poors, leading the rich to eat the rich, which they'll have to catch, prep and cook themselves! Themselves, people! The anguished wailing that will ensue will break hearts…

BlueMonkeh June 1, 2011 at 10:26 am

So there is a silver lining to this continuing cloud?

samsuncle June 1, 2011 at 8:52 am

Do they realize that some fetuses will be aborted due to lack of maternal nutrition? So this is a pro abortion measure passed by Republicans. How ironic.

SorosBot June 1, 2011 at 9:31 am

Yes, but due to all the restrictions the states are putting up that make abortion effectively illegal for poor women they will be getting the abortions from back-alley butchers and some of them will be killed in the process, which is exactly what the "pro-life" lobby wants to happen.

KAVE June 3, 2011 at 4:22 pm

Not that kind of abortion. Spontaneous abortion aka miscarriage. Or the kind where the fetus stops growing and a D&E is needed or else the woman will get an infection and die. Oh wait, D&Es won't happen anymore if Virginia Foxx gets her way. Awesome. So death to hungry pregnant poor women all around.

ManchuCandidate June 1, 2011 at 8:53 am

In California the minimum allotment is $16. the average allotment is a little under $200/month. Of course the GOP hates SNAP–it's one of the best local stimulus programs going, with funds spent locally. Each SNAP dollar spent generates $1.72 in additional local spending. Yeah, who needs that?

SarcasticNymph June 4, 2011 at 2:05 am

No wonder fry bread is so popular with the natives. It's cheap and filling, and kills you through obesity, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and hypercholesteremia in middle age.

The YAFers are proto-trolls. They've been doing this since the days of Bill Buckley.

The GOP Nat'l Convention in 2000 took place in Philly when I was living there. Besides being a total weird circus where the GOP tried to make it seem like they were this big tent party embracing minorities (srsly, the floor vote on Bush's nomination was like an Up With People routine), one of the highlights for me was a YAF protest outside the convention hall where they were handing out syringes with bright green labels that said HEY, GOV. RIDGE! GIVE A PUSH FOR JUSTICE – EXECUTE MUMIA!

That didn't go over well with the pro-Mumia protestors.

Stay classy, guys.

Steverino247 June 1, 2011 at 9:47 am

"and the aid would be contingent on work or job training"

That's rich! There are no jobs to train for because the wealthy sent them overseas where they can get away with paying in bowls of rice and avoid environmental restrictions. I'm sure they're going to demand that recipients test for drugs next, too.

I was once a job coach in a summer job between semesters. A number of Hispanic women were displaced when their jobs assembling rifle scopes were terminated when the factory was sent overseas. It was my job to find them new work and job training. Some of these women had been doing this work for over twenty years and all they had known was assembling these little parts into scopes. My final recommendation as my summer job ended was to eliminate my position because it was a joke to pay me to do the impossible. There was no hope of finding them any new jobs doing anything like what they had been doing because whatever I found them or trained them for was just going to be sent overseas like their last job. This was in 1982! It's not gotten any better since.

GOPCrusher June 1, 2011 at 3:27 pm

According to a story on NPR last week, some of the southern states are experiencing a manufacturing renaissance. Companies are moving jobs back from China and Third-World countries because wages in these states are now competitive. One owner that was interviewed said that they noticed that products that were advertised as Made In The USA saw a 30% higher sale rate.
Of course, the interview came to crashing halt, when it was pointed out that the employer was paying it's employees 8 bucks an hour with no benefits.
But they provided profit-sharing which for a 10 year time period equated to an extra 20,000 paid out to employees. Per employee. For the entire 10 years.

I think in the Republicans' Bible, they've edited the Beatitudes down to only the last one. The others seem a bit inconvenient to the standard GOP and Fundy approach to life. Thinking they are persecuted for their religious beliefs, however, fits right in.

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Let's not even get into the whole feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, etc.

Doktor Zoom June 1, 2011 at 10:20 am

Steverino247 June 1, 2011 at 11:33 am

Blessed are the cheesemakers?

Chet Kincaid June 1, 2011 at 12:21 pm

But what does "blessed are they" even mean? It could mean, "God will take care of them, so I don't have to give a shit." Or it could mean, "their suffering enhances their spirituality, so suffering is good." If you're going to argue with Oligarch-duped Fundies, you better come armed with more direct Biblical instructions to stop fucking with the poor than the Beatitudes.

Snark aside, I think it would be nice if the food stamp program were run like Oregon's WIC (Women and Infant Care) program, which only allows real food to be bought. I used to be a general store owner in Eastern Oregon and it was discouraging to see that well over 90% of my food stamp sales were for junk food; chips and the like. Then again, if the idea is to poison all the recipients, I guess it's working.

SorosBot June 1, 2011 at 12:16 pm

They don't; in fact one of the teabaggers' big complaints about food stamps (and other government services) is that so much is "wasted" on "illegal" immigrants who don't spend into it, even though undocumented aliens don't get any benefits and do pay taxes.

Yeah. It's a real head scratcher on their thought processes. And with minorities bound to out pace the white population in this country within the next 30 years, they seem to be doing everything they can to alienate them.
But they seem to think they can gain the African-American and Hispanics vote in this country by sticking to their wedge issues like same-sex marriage and abortion.
People that have no food, whether or not gays can get married is not their biggest concern.

not that Dewey June 1, 2011 at 1:28 pm

Please allow me to explain/apologize:

The Editorial board at the Albuquerque Journal and our local Clear Channel/AM radio hatemonger wield a disproportionate amount of influence in state politics. It is because of them that these couple hundred morons on the NMI comments page make the state sound like Arizona. We elected this PalinLite/teabagger insane governor who wants to convert all public schools into private prisons, on top of this abortion of a "budget-cutting measure" she just signed, and use the savings to subsidize strip mining and the aforementioned private prison industry.

I would think that only Montana would be a worse state to try this kind of shit.

[large per capita foodstamp-receiving population] x [barely any capita] = ?

ShaveTheWhales June 1, 2011 at 1:41 pm

I did clicky to the article, discovered that the leg is eliminating a state supplement to SNAP (still chickenshit, but), and then made the mistake of reading a few comments. What a bunch of self-righteous, fact-free, inhumane drivel.

ShaveTheWhales June 1, 2011 at 1:45 pm

To be marginally fair to the NM government, if I read the article correctly, they are eliminating the state supplement to SNAP, which, e.g., has made the minimum payment $25 per month per person, instead of the Federally-mandated minimum of $16 per month.

An analytical note: This means the supplement is $9 per month per minimum recipient. Or, about $100 per year. If we make the assumption that the supplemental amount is the same for all, the NM leg is gonna save the state a whopping half a mil by pulling a small prop from under about 5,000 oldz / disabledz.

BZ1 June 1, 2011 at 1:59 pm

They're not living la vida loca and lying around drinking and watching television. If they're lucky enough to get a few hours off, they're either taking care of kids or sleeping.

Bah, I hate the GOP

Proving once again that the Republican party has its priorities in order: Line your pockets, put the tab for everything on the saps and fuck the poor, a lot of money has been spent making sure the fuckers don't vote. If the bubbas ever snap and realize what these folks have been doing to them in their Lords name, it will make the French revolution look like an ice cream social at a Methodist church. They will be bowling with severed heads for years. I hope I'm not around for it.
