80-Year-Old ‘Pentagon Papers’ Hero Arrested At White House For Protesting U.S Torture of Bradley Manning

by Ken Layne

While your country was starting another war and also still losing two other wars and also ignoring some of our closer Arab Dictatorship Allies as they massacred their own people, 80-year-old Daniel Ellsberg peacefully protested outside the White House on the eighth (!) anniversary of America’s occupation of Iraq. And he was handcuffed and hauled away by the federal police, because why not? All he ever did was expose the lies of several U.S. administrations regarding another bloody lost cause (our war against the Vietnamese). Back then, of course, the president specifically ordered Ellsberg’s assassination — and then, on second or third paranoid/drunken thought, decided to just expose Ellsberg as a crazy person, by ordering the White House burglary of Ellsberg’s psychiatrist’s office. Good times! Anyway, these days it’s easier for a war president to just ignore everybody and give bland assurances that our various torture operations against citizens and foreigners are all totally cool, above-board and just what we need for Winning the Future:

FireDogLake, people:

Eighty year-old Daniel Ellsberg was arrested on Saturday in front of the White House when he refused to leave at the request of police. He was one of 113 people who were arrested, handcuffed and taken to the police station on March 19, 2011 for protesting President Obama’s continued torture of Bradley Manning.

President Obama has voiced his firm support for Barnes’ actions. At a recent press conference, he said he personally asked the Pentagon if the conditions of Manning’s confinement were appropriate. “They assure me that they are,” said the President. Obama echoed Barnes’ justification for stripping Manning naked each night when he said “some of this has to do with Private Manning’s safety.”

Obama also recently forced State Department spokesman PJ Crowley to resign after he said that Manning’s treatment was “ridiculous,” “counterproductive” and “stupid.”

You fuckers are full of cheery news this morning..Happy Monday!

LouBristol March 21, 2011 at 11:57 am

Hey! What the hell is this. There's no dick joke in this post.

nounverb911 March 21, 2011 at 12:00 pm

Cheney has a heart.

Oblios_Cap March 21, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Andy Dick walks into a bar…

Negropolis March 22, 2011 at 2:34 am

…where within minutes, he's committed a dozen or so groping offenses.

Sophist [DDS,DD,DFH] March 21, 2011 at 12:23 pm

The dick joke was arrested for protesting in front of the White House and confined to a maximum security comedy club in the basement of the Pentagon. But don't worry, I have been assured the conditions of its confinement are entirely appropriate: no one's laughing at it there either.

EdFlintstone March 21, 2011 at 11:58 am

Manning isn't being tortured, he's being "enhanced" detained.

Negropolis March 22, 2011 at 2:34 am

That's like the "prefered package" for detainees, right?

SorosBot March 21, 2011 at 11:59 am

And Ellsberg was never convicted for leaking the Pentagon Papers because all the evidence against him was obtained illegally and inadmissible in court; which must be why the military is afraid to actually have a trial for Manning.

GOPCrusher March 21, 2011 at 2:40 pm

And more than likely explains why the wingnuts and former Bushyt Misadministration members are so dead set against having Gitmo detainees stand trial in civilian courts in the United States.

Gratuitous World March 21, 2011 at 11:59 am

ordered assassination -> solitary w/ torture. really making progress! Maybe 2019's whistleblower will get to see a lawyer every 3rd month and only get his balls tasered every Tuesday.

Oblios_Cap March 21, 2011 at 12:02 pm

That ball tasering thing happened on Justified. It looked painful.

Gratuitous World March 21, 2011 at 12:11 pm

This president is under no illusions that ball taserings, either in the name of national security or basic cable dramas, are a walk in the park.

KenLayIsAlive March 21, 2011 at 12:15 pm

"I have asked the Pentagon, and they have assured me that the ball taserings are for Pvt. Manning's safety."

- President Barack Obama

Oblios_Cap March 21, 2011 at 12:01 pm

All he ever did was expose the lies of several U.S. administrations regarding another bloody lost cause (our war against the Vietnamese).

It wasn't a lost cause. We got rid of Diem.

HistoriCat March 21, 2011 at 12:05 pm

I've heard that Kennedy was reluctant to go to war during the Cuban Missile Crisis because he had been reading The Guns of August. Can we slip Barry The March of Folly? Maybe that would help him see the light – nothing else seems to be getting through.

Pithaughn March 21, 2011 at 9:19 pm

Sorrow of Empires. with a chaser of The long Emergency.

donner_froh March 21, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Sink or swim with Ngo Dinh Diem.

James Michael Curley March 21, 2011 at 1:32 pm

Only to be suceeded by Duong Van "Big" Minh for a year whose total incompetence generated four years of palace coups. Big Minh got an encore in 1975 for two days just before Saigon fell. Various biographers have reported that Ho Chi Minh was elated that Diem was assasinated calling it the US 'biggest mistake' as Diem's corrupt government had the support of all the province chiefs. Diem, of course, was a criminal and a murderer. But he was our criminal and murderer.

user-of-owls March 21, 2011 at 12:03 pm

I realize I'm swimming against the tide here, but I actually think we're doing just the right thing with Manning.

And frankly, I'd like us to do the same thing to his brother Eli.

DaRooster March 21, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Fuck the Giants and the Colts they rode in on.

Negropolis March 22, 2011 at 2:36 am

Whew! I almost lost it.

I totally agree. Those Mississippi mutants needs to go back from whence they came, I says, and take their giant foreheads with 'em.

BTW, is there anything we can do about Eli Whitney?

Angry_Marmot March 23, 2011 at 4:48 am

Ask the Mormons; I'm sure they retroactively baptized him.

marinmaven March 21, 2011 at 12:06 pm

Daniel Ellsberg is the bomb. Check out the documentary,"The Most Dangerous Man In The World – Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers" and if you are extra-geeky get yourself the "May It Please the Court: First Amendment" and listen to the oral arguments of New York Times v. United States. Daniel Ellsberg started out being a 180 deg different than the peace protestor he is today. When presented with facts he was man enough to admit he was wrong and took a courage stand to change things.
Also in "May It Please the Court:First Amendment" you get to hear Scalia say "pasties"

EatsBabyDingos March 21, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Arresting peaceniks is sooooooo 1970's. Needz moar bongz if you are gonna do the 70's right, because that's how this makes sense. Sensamilla sense, but sense, not scents or cents.

freakishlywrong March 21, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Has any teatard been arrested? Any of them?

Thurman Munster IV March 21, 2011 at 12:33 pm

Several have had their hoverarounds unplugged, so that counts as arrested doesn't it?

neiltheblaze March 21, 2011 at 8:49 pm

Of course not – they're Real Americans.

ウイジャ盤 March 21, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Does this mean Barry won't get the Father Robert Drinan Award?

(for you youngz, Bobby Drinan was Barney Frank's predecessor's predecessor, before the Pope pooped on priests running for office, and in addition to Congress, preceded Frank as Prez of the libramous ADA)

bureaucrap March 21, 2011 at 12:24 pm

How does "above-board" relate to "water-board" in this case? I guess they'd be pretty much the same.

Bonzos_Bed_Time March 21, 2011 at 12:39 pm

He better be glad he used a condom, otherwise it would be off to Sweden with him!

Lionel[redacted]Esq March 21, 2011 at 12:57 pm

That is why you have to give the 'baggers credit. They want America to get involved in a war it can be proud of and which we will be sure to win, like the Civil War.

DownFist Troll March 21, 2011 at 1:07 pm

Oh if only robot Nixon were president. Now there was a commander in chief who wasn't afraid of ordering a ball-tazering or 2.

Bonzos_Bed_Time March 21, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Downfisty obviously does not support ball-tazering.

Too many unhappy memories I presume.

DownFist Troll March 21, 2011 at 3:24 pm

What?! Well i'll show me! I'll upfist the downfists! That'll learn me for shures this time.

Well, that or more ball-taZoring.

Bonzos_Bed_Time March 21, 2011 at 3:30 pm

No not you, the invisible Downfisty. You know, he's like Jesus. We can't see him but he's there answering our secret wishes. But with Cheetos stained fingers.

It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world,

Tommmcatt March 21, 2011 at 1:09 pm

You all say "ball tasering" like it's a bad thing.

MinAgain March 21, 2011 at 1:15 pm

You go, Daniel! I hope I'm that feisty when I'm 80.

BarackMyWorld March 21, 2011 at 1:39 pm

The arresting of Daniel Ellsberg really should be a "What Have We Done" moment of realization for the Obama Administration.

Ken Layne March 21, 2011 at 1:57 pm

That would take a level of self-realization never before seen in this White House.

Jason_inthe_Peg March 21, 2011 at 5:32 pm

Has that level of self-realization ever been allowed through the White House doors?

Hell any governments doors anywhere in the world ever?

sati_demise March 21, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Then Ellsberg got arrested again the next day at Quantanico.

They were going to keep him overnight, but then they let him go 'cause he is teh old.
2 arrests in 2 days.
You go Daniel!

chascates March 21, 2011 at 2:50 pm

And since Obama closed Gitmo after his election there's no other options here.

Hatrabbit March 21, 2011 at 3:34 pm

“some of this has to do with Private Manning’s safety.”

Psychologically torture them to the point of suicide, then strip them and make them stand naked in front of the torture guys.

Because nobody ever commits suicide if they're naked (hey–good times!). Or among friends.

Pithaughn March 21, 2011 at 9:25 pm

Whoah nelly. Didnt Dr Lecter trick another inmate to swallow his tongue as a favor to Jody Foster? Maybe they should cut out his tongue just to be sure. You know

PublicLuxury March 21, 2011 at 4:57 pm

Ellsberg vs Nixon et al… This is just payback for the Pentagon Papers. Finally the CIA and NSA and FBI and ICE and NCIS and APD (Atlanta Police Department) have located the Daniel Ellsberg and are in the process of licking, lap dancing or assassinating him.

ttommyunger March 21, 2011 at 11:34 pm

I'm sorry, but Barry would have to stand on his mama's shoulders to look Ellsberg in the eye.

Snarkfest March 23, 2011 at 8:58 am

Nope. His mama's mama's shoulders. They are a short family back in the generations.

ttommyunger March 23, 2011 at 9:56 am

At least we agree, Ellsberg is a great American Patriot and a brave man.

Negropolis March 22, 2011 at 2:41 am

Out of genuine curiosity, what police force was he arrested by? How does that work in Washington around government property? Is it just the normal District police?

sportshort March 22, 2011 at 2:32 pm

Is Ellsberg getting free health care in jail? I must protest.

Snarkfest March 23, 2011 at 9:03 am

Reminds me of when the jackboots roughed up Ray McGovern at Hillary Clintons speech. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=My29YT1T4R4
All Ray did was stand up and turn his back on her.
Of course Hillary's speech was about all the Freedom we have in the US compared to these other totalitarian countries.
The Irony in this post is simply that.
