Here Is Jared Loughner’s Horrifying Mugshot

by Jack Stuef

'A cleaning product'
This is going to make it a lot harder for Arizona’s elected officials to say Mexicans are scarier than this fellow, even if he did go to the Tom Delay School of Mugshot Glee. [Some Twitter thing]

ttommyunger January 10, 2011 at 5:41 pm

The utter banality of evil.

slithytoves January 10, 2011 at 7:37 pm

Dude, there is nothing banal about that shot. I would run for my life if I saw this person.

ttommyunger January 10, 2011 at 9:34 pm

The one I would run from is the one skilled enough to be invisible, but then I wouldn't see him, would I? Only he thinks he's special in a good way.

Rarian Rakista January 11, 2011 at 10:48 am

The utter insanity of conspiracy theory laden thinking.

ttommyunger January 11, 2011 at 10:54 am

Thinking?

WriteyWriterton January 10, 2011 at 5:42 pm

[snark off] The families of the victims are in my thoughts. This poster-boy for psychopathy should spend the rest of his natural life in an 8X8 cell, with pictures of his victims visible to him behind a lucite wall, and the lights in his cell on all the time.

Giveusabob January 10, 2011 at 5:50 pm

True story: Salvador Dali, in less honorable times, inspired surrealist jail cells that were intended make their occupants as uncomfortable as possible (which apparently also included mandatory screenings of Dali's films). http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/2698177….

Far more humane than waterboarding.

CookieGuggleman January 10, 2011 at 6:16 pm

Won't he get the death penalty because he murdered a federal judge? But he's probably enjoy that.

Guppy06 January 10, 2011 at 7:26 pm

He's too white to get the death penalty in Arizona. IQ may be too high as well.

Winnie_Cooper January 10, 2011 at 7:28 pm

He is eligible for the death penalty because he murdered a federal judge *in the course of his duties*. Now, I'm not really clear about what the judge was doing there that day, but it's possible for that part to be a slamdunk or a bit of a stretch, depending on the facts presented at trial. I really want to find out more about all this.

Negropolis January 11, 2011 at 2:50 am

You can take the judge out, and you still have the multiple shooting deaths of others. I'd be surprised if he's not tried on capital charges minus the federal officials.

Winnie_Cooper January 11, 2011 at 10:28 am

I don't think that makes him eligible for the federal death penalty, but it looks like it does under state law. http://www.azleg.gov/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/ar... (Scroll to Section F.)

zhubajie January 10, 2011 at 7:31 pm

Let him share a cell with DeLay!

WriteyWriterton January 10, 2011 at 7:48 pm

Neither is a good enough human being to deserve company, but that's a start.

OkieDokieDog January 10, 2011 at 5:44 pm

Hope he gets tossed into the cell block with some Messican banditos that don't like people who kill little girls.

ChuckieJesus January 10, 2011 at 7:35 pm

Fffffuuu beat me to it.

Steverino247 January 10, 2011 at 5:50 pm

Oh, yeah. He's really happy with what he did. There's no "there" there in that brain. Totally nuts. Imagine the strength it took the deputies not to beat that smirk off that face. He's lucky the professionals are guarding him. Really lucky.

(And doesn't he look like Glenn Beck's love child?)

transfatz January 11, 2011 at 12:05 am

This ugly deed was probably his self-affirmation of existence. Looking at this picture I keep thinking of the song line:
"I am, I was, and now, I will be."
And yes, big kudos to law enforcement on this one. They'll need to keep their guard up though.

arihaya January 11, 2011 at 2:04 am

yes

wonkette need to put photos of both of them side by side

natoslug January 10, 2011 at 5:51 pm

Wasn't he really hairy in all of the 'file photos' they were showing of him? Marijuana also makes you go bald, apparently.

BaldarTFlagass January 11, 2011 at 9:28 am

Quitting marijuana makes you go bald. Hence my full lustrous mane.

MinAgain January 10, 2011 at 5:58 pm

He looks like a post-adolescent Uncle Fester.

MittsHairHelmet January 10, 2011 at 5:58 pm

He kinda looks like noted former McCain advisor Steve Schmidt

Of course he's a leftist, because everyone knows that its the leftists that shave their heads like skinhead neo-national SOCIALISTs.

arihaya January 11, 2011 at 2:06 am

yeah kinda sad wingnut claim that Nazi was a socialist or leftist party …

they are as socialist as Democratic People Republic of Korea is a democratic country

harry_palmer January 10, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Although he's about the level of quality Blofeld Arizona rates, he's wrought devastation in some beautiful people's lives. Can't wait til one of his new neighbours knocks that smirk off of his face for good.

WriteyWriterton January 10, 2011 at 7:24 pm

Probably won't have any neighbors. if he doesn't get the death penalty, he'll spend his life in one of the supermaxes. It's a very quiet neighborhood. Lots of time to read End Times and the Overton Window. Over and over and over and…

finallyhappy January 10, 2011 at 7:30 pm

Remember Dahmer- killed by another prisoner while doing some work- in a chapel (I think). I guess they do use solitary for someone like this but we can hope he gets a little free time to share with his neighbors.

zhubajie January 10, 2011 at 7:33 pm

He'll maybe write to Brother Stair and send him tithes, like a number of others!

LionelHutzEsq January 10, 2011 at 6:02 pm

Nope, doesn't look like he listens to the Glenn Beck show at all. . . .

DemmeFatale January 10, 2011 at 6:31 pm

Their matching, shit-eating smirks, are uncanny.

A bowl of diarrheal mystery chunks and a crazy straw for both of them.

Yikes. Is there a phrenologist in the house?

kenlayisalive January 10, 2011 at 6:11 pm

I second the yikes. This is the sort of guy you'd cross a street full of speeding traffic to avoid.

EdFlintstone January 10, 2011 at 6:24 pm

Man he aced the screen test for mass murderer.

ChuckieJesus January 10, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Believe it or not, I feel bad for the other schizophrenics and potheads who manage to live life and not shoot anyone. According to scuttlebutt, the dude actually quit the ganj a while ago. I remember the brain zaps just coming off of bog-standard SSRIs, maybe there's something similar going on for schizos on the weed.

I also think that trying to make sense of his politics is a fool's game at best. The man is obviously mentally ill. There's no "there", there, just look into those eyes.

imissopus January 10, 2011 at 6:30 pm

He looks like a crazier Michael Chiklis.

DemmeFatale January 10, 2011 at 6:34 pm

I liked it better when "Taxi Driver" was just a movie.

bumfug January 10, 2011 at 7:26 pm

Sorry, Demme, I hit the wrong thumb. Where's the Mulligan button here?

slowhansolo January 11, 2011 at 12:30 am

Agreed, although I cannot believe there's a Cybill Shepherd (sic?) waiting in the wings…

HistoriCat January 11, 2011 at 9:36 am

I'm thinking Giffords was the Cybill Shepherd as well as the politician.

4TheTurnstiles January 10, 2011 at 6:34 pm

This is a disturbed soul. Instead of proper care, he got a bellyfull of bullshit from the foil-hat crew, and here we are dealing with the consequences.

It's cheaper, safer, and much more humane to simply care for the young, elderly, ill, and vulnerable than to insist on making consumers out of them. They become consumers of poison and we're off to the races…

HistoriCat January 11, 2011 at 9:38 am

Sure it's cheaper, safer and more humane but what about the Free Market? The Invisible Hand? How can you advocate for things which are an affront to the naked capitalism that Jesus and the Founding Fathers specifically wrote about in the sacred Constitution??

Beowoof January 10, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Just something else to thank Ronald Raygun for, his defunding of mental health institutions led to most of our homeless and now to having no place to put potential killers such as this.

jim89048 January 10, 2011 at 8:59 pm

I used to live not too far from Camarillo State Mental Hospital. When Raygun was governor of CA he toured the facility when he was determining whether or not to unleash the inmates on an unsuspecting populace. Staff medicated the patients so well that they were extremely well-behaved, and groundskeepers actually painted the lawns a pleasing green shade. Apparently it worked, as Camarillo survived the cut, only to fall to Wilson's axe some 30 years later.

Progressiveinga January 10, 2011 at 6:37 pm

One sentence he'll never hear:
"Pack your bunk and kiss your punk; you're goin' home"
Nope, he's never gonna hear that.

Zvi_Bleindmeis January 10, 2011 at 6:41 pm

I'm a clinical psychologist, and I think the "schizophrenic" canard is premature. The guy is some kind of crazy, but paranoia and even psychosis come in a variety of flavors. A true-blue schizophrenic usually has a look in his eyes that is off somewhere else, and I don't see that here. I smell sociopathy, whatever else he may have going on.

I'd bet good money that his legal team will try to make him out to be schizophrenic, though.

x111e7thst January 10, 2011 at 6:47 pm

Or maybe he is just an evil asshole.

BarackMyWorld January 10, 2011 at 6:59 pm

I'm a special ed. teacher, so let me pile on and say someone might also claim he has ADHD or Asperger's Syndrome. Not because of any evidence, but because parents are just like legal teams.

CalamityJames January 10, 2011 at 7:08 pm

I have ADHD (which, of course, led to my military discharge), I smoke teh grasses, and I'm liberal. Anybody wanna give me a ride to the grocery store?

finallyhappy January 10, 2011 at 7:34 pm

I hope not- parents of kids on the spectrum have enough problems. My son is very intelligent and as kind as can be but he comes off as odd until you know him- ADHD/PDD/ on the specturm . How about we just leave the killer as fucked up- or evil asshole. I haven't heard about his parents- guess I'll have to look into this more

BarackMyWorld January 10, 2011 at 8:00 pm

I meant that there's quite a few parents that put labels on their kids whether they really have the disability in question or not, and use it as an excuse to deflect away from the behavior (which tragically takes time and resources away from other children with needs). Similar to how it was implied that legal teams use schizophrenia as part of a legal defense whether it is applicable or not.

I do not know anything about his parents.

edgydrifter January 10, 2011 at 7:02 pm

I guess all the weed and rancid milk faded his potniki spots, but that's a Tenctonese if I ever saw one.

WriteyWriterton January 10, 2011 at 7:11 pm

I note this f+*&4er has already yanked the Fifth. This tells me he isn't crazy, in any disconnected psychotic sense. As noted above, he's probably a sociopath – knows right from wrong, and think's he's right and everyone else is wrong. An infantile narcissist, too, probably, with massive self-esteem issues.

But now he's made the big time! Top of the world, Ma!

Will now put my thumbnail back on its thumb.

Guppy06 January 10, 2011 at 7:31 pm

Actually, I heard they threw a bigshot federal public defender at him not long after they arrested him, flown out from San Diego. They really don't want him to get off on technicalities.

WriteyWriterton January 10, 2011 at 7:44 pm

Oh, this lad's going to get all the due-process reserved for white middle-class sociopaths. Which is a lot. They'll dot every 'I' and cross all the "ts."

Btw, what are we betting he carves a tattoo on his forehead somehow, a la Charlie Manson? I'll give points on this.

jim89048 January 10, 2011 at 9:20 pm
DustBowlBlues January 10, 2011 at 7:33 pm

"f+*&4er"

That is adorable. Are you June Cleaver in a new name and avatar? Because that's the kind of charmingly sweet things she would have done.

WriteyWriterton January 11, 2011 at 12:34 pm

Just can't bring myself to swear in print. I'm an Old, so I have to use my vocabulary to keep teh Alzheimer's at bay.

If it's any consolation, I'm really crude in private. REALLY crude. Ask my spouse. On second thought, don't.

GeneralLerong January 10, 2011 at 9:09 pm

Whoever it was who first noted the connection between the rant on gold and silver money and Paultard wins the prize.

Remember that smug gun-toter from somewhere in the New England sticks who was interviewed by Chris Matthews? Laughner's just farther along on the same libertarian nutcase spectrum.

Oh. I'm the only one who sees the resemblance? That can't be good.

DemmeFatale January 11, 2011 at 1:47 am

I also noticed this when some guy on "Meet the Press" said he had no discernible ideology. I screamed PAULTARD at the TV!

Serolf_Divad January 10, 2011 at 7:26 pm

Thanks, this picture will now haunt my dreams.

bumfug January 10, 2011 at 7:30 pm

This guy gives shit-house rats a good name.

DustBowlBlues January 10, 2011 at 7:30 pm

These posts get a jillion responses in about two minutes. Is it just me, or are there a lot of new people around here? If so, welcome. Evidently, wingnut acting outery is good for the wonket bidness.

Oh, shit. Thank heaven that freak is locked up. With grammar such as I just used, he'd kill me next.

Barbara_i January 10, 2011 at 7:37 pm

He got the attorney that defended The Unibomber and Susan "some black men hijacked my car with my children in it" Smith. He's uberfucked and I'm glad.

BarackMyWorld January 10, 2011 at 8:04 pm

Yikes. Don't get me wrong, I believe everyone is entitled to a fair trial….but is there any case that person won't take?

JustPixelz January 10, 2011 at 8:27 pm

People like that are good for the system. It helps block accusations that the government has unbridled power. Except while Kenyan Obama/Hitler is "the terrorist from within" (sign as 9/12 TP rally). Or "when injustice become law resistance becomes duty" (sign as TP "tax day" rally). Or "guns don't kill people. taxes + politiians do" (T-shirt at same rally)

Lazy Media January 11, 2011 at 9:48 am

It's her job. She's a federal public defender.

LibrulEleet January 10, 2011 at 11:25 pm

Well, neither of those clients got the death penalty, did they? Neither did Zacharias Moussaoui (sp?). Not a bad track record.

PublicLuxury January 10, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Why is every really fucked up serial killer nut job loser white?
Tim McVeigh white
Jared Loughner white
Lee Harvey Oswald white
Mark David Chapman white
John Hinckley JR white
Charles Manson white
John Wilkes Booth white
Charles J Guiteau white
Ted Kaczynski white
Ted Bundy white

Is there a pattern forming??????

It's in us all, but not all of us are called to duty.

glamourdammerung January 11, 2011 at 1:03 am

Actually, the Virginia Tech shooter ruined the curve by doing so well in a white-dominated sport.

HistoriCat January 11, 2011 at 9:40 am

Typical Asian overachiever.

Lazy Media January 11, 2011 at 9:47 am

Grim Sleeper 10+

Atlanta Child Killer 25+

Congo, 1000's of serial killers running around who are black.

No eyebrows. So at some point, he pulled a Bob Geldof/Syd Barret?

real_dc_native January 10, 2011 at 11:48 pm

Interesting discussion about how his mental illness was known by the college, students, teachers, and parents. Also it turns out Tuscon has pretty progressive public mental health care. But no one took the trouble to get him help: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/...

Rarian Rakista January 11, 2011 at 10:58 am

Tucson told Phoenix to go fuck itself over defunding of mental health care services decades ago. So did Flagstaff and a few other cities as well. Right now in Phoenix mentally ill homeless people are hunted for sport by the local police because they know they can get a collar for them with almost no repercussions, the DA in Maricopa County almost never grants any leniency to the mentally ill and Sheriff Joe refuses to give them needed treatment while in jail.

That whole state was ripe for something like this happening for some time.

fuflans January 11, 2011 at 12:03 am

it's good that we now know what started the great chinese moon war.

transfatz January 11, 2011 at 12:07 am

Your honor, defense would like to move to recuse all judges from this case and for a change of venue to uhh, Pluto.

slowhansolo January 11, 2011 at 12:46 am

I don't know shit-all about psychology, but that looks like a sociopath to me. If I saw that guy in a bar, I'd feel lax if I took my eyes off him so long as he hung around. And yet, he conducts a very long, very public downward spiral, and no one says boo?

This is the real failing. If this sack of shit took any cues from the noise machine, his parents are no less responsible for not owning up to the reality of their son.

glamourdammerung January 11, 2011 at 1:05 am

"Second Amendment solutions" do not look as pleasant as was advertised for the last couple of years.

Negropolis January 11, 2011 at 3:11 am

Yeah, no kidding. Let this man be their face; their ugly, twisted, hateful face.

Here he is, you douchebags. Your very own personal Satan to tease and reverse tempt until you get so far in, you can't pull away. This is your king, your prince of darkness; bow to him. The beast is still hungry; feed him if you fucking dare, you losers.

Steverino247 January 11, 2011 at 1:07 am

May I suggest the Ludovico Treatment for this crazy fuck? I know it's tempting to want to execute him, but keeping him in a bottle someplace for psychologists and psychiatrists to study under carefully controlled conditions would be much more instructive. Every time one of these assholes gets capped in the act, we lose the chance to really learn how this society manages to create these beasts.

BipolarBadger January 11, 2011 at 1:41 am

This guy is just what the Mental Health community needs. Back to trying to break the stigma of mental illness for me. Lots of work done and this shmuck and his parents who housed him and never tried to get him care. Lets take a look at the mental health of his family. I am sure soon more that will come out and shock us some more.

Lazy Media January 11, 2011 at 9:43 am

Based on previous whack job shooters, here's what's likely to come out about him: He's a paranoid (not necessarily schizophrenic, although his writing looks pretty schizo). And he was obsessed with previous violent whack jobs (the Columbine shooters, etc.). Most mass killers/political assassins do it for the fame, and that mug shot sure looks like somebody who got what he wanted.

It also looks a lot like that V for Vendetta mask, which may not be a coincidence.

It's quite possible that his schizophrenia, while it fed his paranoia, wasn't the main reason he became an assassin. He could just be a self-absorbed shit who wanted to "show them," like Dylan Klebold, Lee Harvey Oswald, Tim McVeigh, etc.

Negropolis January 12, 2011 at 4:15 am

That was might point, even apart from the federal charges, which are capital charges, the state charges will almost certainly be capital charges, as well. The point being that it's highly unlikely he's not brought up on capital charges.

BTW, maybe neither here nor there, but I'm completely opposed to capital punishment.
