Arlen Specter Manages To Complete Final Senate Speech Without Switching Parties

  losers

Arlen Specter, still talking, but for one last time:

“The spectacular re-election of Senator Lisa Murkowski on a write-in vote in the Alaskan general election and the defeat of other Tea Party candidates in 2010 in general elections may show the way to counter right-wing extremists,” he said. “By bouncing back and winning, Senator Murkowski demonstrated that a moderate-centrist can win by informing and arousing the general electorate. Her victory proves that America still wants to be and can be governed by the center.”

An important history lesson on why now we all bow down to our dear Supreme Leader Murkowski. [NYT]

moderate-centrist can win by informing and arousing the general electorate.

Lisa won by showing a little boob?

And that's a damn shame, if you ask me. If we're going to elect clowns, could we at least elect snappy-dressing good-looking ones? (And I don't mean Palin. And I don't mean Berulusconi.)

  2. freakishlywrong

"Informing and arousing" are two words I'd really rather not hear coming out of Arlen's piehole.

we will have to turn Murkowski into a sex act. well, not you and I, necessarily. I meant the generic "we". Although…

If not for the fact I find Steve Benen to be a twit, I'd prolly still be reading "Political Animal". But nice post, this time.

"Moderate-centrist?" Murkowski proved that a right-wing hag can beat a batshit crazy dumbass. Hooray! It's still America!

    1. BarackMyWorld

In Washington speak, a moderate is someone who breaks with their party on 1 out of 100 votes in order to take a bold stand supporting something that's already popular.

  4. jim89048

Maybe it was Murkowski that got caught leaving Graham's residence early that one morning? I can see how this could've been confusing to some.

Lisa Murkowski winning as a write-in candidate: why, it's a virtual magic bullet of electoral victories!

  6. hagajim

Arlen might not have switched parties, but I'm thinking he's probably been a switch hitter for awhile. How else do you explain his relationship with Larry Craig?

  7. SayItWithWookies

Sure, a moderate centrist can win an election — just not a Republican primary. And I hope they stick to those high ideals.

  8. Sue4466

Only in a world where Obama is considered a socialist is a right-winger like Murkowski deemed a "moderate-centrist." Who the fuck is he kidding?

  9. mumbly_joe

Really, though, this seems like as good a time as any to reach through the airwaves (sic) and the years and ask Arlen Spector to consider something. I would love for him to consider an apology sometime and some full explanation of what he did with (sic) Anita Hill during the Clarence Thomas hearings.

  10. ttommyunger

Arlen needs to be what he looks like: dead. His speciality is dreaming up fantasy shit like the "single bullet theory" and getting murderers off scott free. I would call him a cunt but that would be an insult to cunts, which have some intrinsic value.

  11. ShaveTheWhales

Fucking moderate-centrists! How do they work?

Moderate-centrist, my third eye. Lease-A is a pure porkosaurus. She may vote a little off the reservation while she's still got her snit on, but I doubt that will last beyond the start of the new Congress.

Still better than Douchebag ("Joe") Miller, though.

  12. Negropolis

This just shows you how completely bat-shit insane the electorate is, again. I will never let anyone call Lisa a moderate-centrist without a protest.

Murkowski is (or at least was — I'm waiting to see if she's been freed) a solidly center-right, reliably Republican vote. They can call her a moderate-centrist all that they want to, it doesn't make it so.

Sorry, no snark. Oh, and fuck the feckless and two-faced Arlen Specter.

  13. cheaphits

But this is how we win – chipping away vote by vote and one thing and one congressperson at a time.

This is on our side; Republicans have no morals or political position generally speaking and if they get their delicate feelings hurt or feel a change in the political wind they can be had.

Lawd knows, they can be had.

    1. Negropolis

It's FAR more likely when he new Congress is up and running with more GOP influence that Murky will shift right back to her old self, than for her to go off on her own. Murky is a 'politician' if there ever was one. She'll look at the lay of the land, but her finger in the air and see which way the wind blows, and it ain't blowin' towards the Dems at the moment.

♪ ♫I should have known that I could do as well
By switching to the Democrats and it's worked out rather swell!
Now I know Repubes are not the only party I've been in
Democrat, Republican, so long as I can win.

And I think it's gonna be all right
Yeah the worst is over now
I won another term and you can all go to hell♪ ♫

    With apologies to Paul Simon.
