BUT CHARLIE IS AMERICA

CHARLIE RANGEL INNOCENT ON ALL CHARGES; Just Kidding, VERY GUILTY

by Jack Stuef

A House ethics panel found senior Democratic lawmaker Charles Rangel violated House ethics rules, on 11 of the 13 counts lodged against him. The New York congressman wasn’t in the hearing room when the announcement was made.

Nooooooooo!

The panel deadlocked 4-4 on a charge that by trying to raise money for a college center named in his honor he had been seeking a gift for himself.

WHAT’S THAT YOU SAY? CHARLIE RANGEL IS COMPLETELY INNOCENT? Hooray, justice!

The case now goes to the full 10-person ethics committee to make a recommendation on punishment. The recommendation must be voted on by the full House. The most likely punishment is reprimand, but it is possible he could also face censure on the House floor.

Yes, that may seem most likely. But there are a lot of people in that legislature who really, really like giving black people capital punishment. [WSJ]

Rangel's little performance yesterday is the type of thing that drives wingnuts crazy, except when it's done by white Repubes.

Congress has ethics? Really?

Not_So_Much November 16, 2010 at 1:47 pm

No, don't be silly. This is just theater. I expect Charlie is hoping for a Tony Award.

Naw. They send out for them at meal times.

Charlie just locked up a place alongside Newt as senior morals expert on Fox News and CBN. Oh, wait – he's brown, not orange?

SorosBot November 16, 2010 at 1:21 pm

Remember how, when the Republicans controlled Congress, they made sure to have the ethics committee go after all corrupt members of their own party, instead of just ignoring them even after they were convicted and went to jail like the Democrats did with Rangel? Those corruption-free happy days are coming back again!

The new tea bag congress particularly didn't like the uppity college part. That's not in the constitution for his kind.

So, when do the prostitution trials start for Diaperman?

chickensmack November 16, 2010 at 1:27 pm

How come Congress gets such speedy trials, and the rest of us Murikans have to wait at least a year to begin picking our jury?

INSURRECTION!! You JUST WAIT until the Tea Party TAKES OVER CONGRESS.

That is, when they do it in two years, when they win more seats. In the meantime, check out The_Insurrection's status on Facebook, keep up with your local state's own personal Insurrection leadership on the website, and subscribe to our Constant Contact link for more details.

WE'RE MAD AS HELL AND NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE.

He'd a been exonerated if he did the Funky Chicken or the Chicken Dance instead of asking for time to get new counsel. Or done Bill Cosby's "The Chickenheart that ate New York" routine. Because you can excuse crazy ol' black dudes from having ethics.

Not_So_Much November 16, 2010 at 1:34 pm

It pains me because he's a staunch supporter of most things I like. But, he's also a dirty, bought & paid-for shitbag. Shove him out the door to try and get by on the millions he's made in sweetheart deals after 39 years of scratching backs.

Besides, he looks great in his Dominican swimmers, so go work it girlfriend!

You're never going to get a gift for yourself that way; see, it's all about subtlety. Leave catalogs opened to a page depicting piles of money laying around the coffee tables of your constituents, maybe work the desired gift into conversation ("Say, I heard Representative Tiberi got a shit-ton of cash from one of the pillars of industry in his district. Boy, I could think of so many practical uses for that kind of money. If only . . ."), and if all else fails, make every other item on your list for Santa is a synonym for filthy lucre. I mean, that's how I would go about soliciting a gift for myself.

"Congressional Ethics" just voted Oxymoron of the Year. Charlie will get the equivalent of what I got for going into the locker room barefoot at KnuckleUp last night: "You know Gym Rules require shoes in the locker room, buddy." from a Staffer. The horror, the horror.

SayItWithWookies November 16, 2010 at 1:46 pm

This is great — now that the ethics panel has gained some cred by taking on one of the biggest Democrats they can finally tackle the Repblican slime-and-dirt fest that's been left to ooze around for years. I'll be great to see them — oh, what — now that the House has been taken over by Republicans they're just taking the next two years off? Oh well — carry on, then.

"Ethics" is an anagram for "itches."
Which means that "bethics" would be an anagram for "shibect."

The most likely punishment is reprimand, but it is possible he could also face censure on the House floor.

That'll show him.

elviouslyqueer November 16, 2010 at 2:31 pm

Exactly. After all, a Congressional "Bitch please" really doesn't have the same panache as a good, old fashioned caning beatdown.

Gunner Asch November 16, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Only 11 of 13 charges sustained? Aw, I was hoping for a clean sweep.

DashboardBuddha November 16, 2010 at 3:25 pm

This kind of thing leaves me emotionally constipated.

Ungh…ughn. Damn, nothing. [reads magazine] ungh crap…still nothing [counts ceiling tiles] unnnggnngh! Fuck it…maybe I'll care later.

Negropolis November 17, 2010 at 1:23 am

A black man from Harlem in an ethics violation? Could there be a bigger wet dream for a Republican?

I don't want to be "that guy," but I'm looking at the things alleged, and for most of them, all I can muster is "meh."
