Yes, November really was the Teabaggers’ “N word.” But c’mon people, it’s not like the Republicans eloped with your girlfriend and then tongue punched her fart box. (Some of us don’t even have girlfriends to tongue punch.) Anyway, which Democrats/Marijuana Initiatives lost last night? Basically all of them, except for Harry Reid! At least Meg Whitman lost, so maybe Baby Jesus doesn’t hate Freedom. (Maybe.) Also: No verdict yet on Murray or Bennet, but it looks like they both will squeak by with a Win. I'm pretty sure that what really happened was that the out-of-control right-wing hate machine was particularly out-of-control and hate-ey this year, and pushed a lot of toss-up or leans-right districts really far to the right, the end. I'm also convinced it will get much worse before it gets better, and that we'll be hearing some downright terrifying "ideas" by 2012 as a result, but that's really me, the eternal optimist, speaking there.

Look on the bright side: Two of the most extreme Mama Grizzlies (O'Donnell and Angle) went down in flames. Maybe that will suck some of the wind out of Sarah Palin's sails.
Without both chambers of Congress (as the Democrats showed us, even WITH both chambers) the baggers won't be able to do much of anything, and voters will soon become just as soured on the Republicans as they are on the Dems.
Obama still wields veto power. Harry Reid won, but hopefully his party will wise up and remove his majority leadership.
And Rahm is leaving!
All in all, I see reasons for optimism.

The thing about Rand Paul is, he's nuts, sure but he'll be better than Bunning was. I think he's the closest thing we've got to an openly atheist senator, for one thing.

It was very entertaining watching MSNBC last night and seeing Lawrence O'Donnell point out, "Rand Paul's totally going to filibuster raising the debt ceiling and the US is going to default on its debt and WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!"

As a native Kentuckian who left that state some 20 years ago, I can safely say that I hope the state gets what it deserves in Rand Paul. We'll see how much hootin' and hollerin' will be left when these anti-government rednecks find out that Rand Paul means no more spending and that includes on them, the ones who put him office and not just the illegals and negroes. Better start digging up more ginseng root to supplement that income once the assistance is gone. But hey, at least you won't have any negroes telling you what to do, am I right?

The meme he's pushing is already taking hold. For some reason, the GOP wins ONE chamber of Congress and they have a mandate to undo everything the Dems have done or ever will do on behalf of The American People ™. But when the Dems won the House, Senate, and White House everything they did was against the will of "The People."

It's one thing for the GOP to say that, it's quite another for Democrats to buy into it. Clare McCaskill said it means the Dems need to be more moderate like Manchin in WV. He's a MODERATE? who the fuck is she kidding?

I don't believe this to be the case. We pay more taxes, we create more innovation, hold the most patents, have higher education than those red states. Blue states have been financing the running of the country without complaint, while red states use those benefits while bellyaching about taxes. Blue states bring wealth to our country while not hardly getting anything back. We are not the resource suckers, but red-staters are.

Again, it has been proven that Abstinence Only education only delays out-of-wedlock sex for an average of 18 months. When they do start having sexual activity they are more likely to get pregnant or get and transmit STDs.
We know this because the Bush Administration funneled millions of dollars to school districts across the country. It took some embarrassing pregnancy clusters at high schools for districts to turn down the funding and go for more comprehensive sex ed.
Sex education is a matter of public health. When parents tell their children wait for marriage it does not work and it doesn't prepare them for safe sexual activity. Sex education came about because kids were learning about sex from their friends and misinformation led to a rise of pregnancy and STDs.

I had a sudden outbreak of optimism in the power of constructive debate. I'm sick of both sides demonizing the other. I'm particularly sick of the idea that one side or the other "owns" America. But I'm just losing motivation here. It seems that some people just want hatred and violence all the time. They really, truly want Second Amendment Solutions. And now it's just making me sad. Conservative principles swept a huge number of people into power, and yet this isn't enough for some folks.

Some folks just want war. Some folks just NEED an enemy to hate. I think I'm just going to ignore the publicly and pity them privately now. Maybe I'll pray that God teaches them not to dehumanize entire segments of the population simply because they have different ideas on how to run the country. God knows I've done it too, and I'm ashamed of it. It can be such a guilty pleasure to hate. It's addictive, it's a narcotic, and thanks to the Internet, now we all have our own dealers to keep our supplies nice and stocked.

I'm just through with it.

This is going to be the interesting part. Frankly, I almost wish there had been more of a Republican landslide, because I don't want a single cry of Democratic opposition to get in the way. I just want to see movement of SOME kind. I don't think that's going to happen, because sitting on one's hands and screaming about how the other party is to blame for gridlock makes it far easier to keep one's office. Actual results require risk.

California despite its budget problems is the 8th largest economy in the WORLD. We will do okay because we have educated people. Unemployment isn't that bad if you have a college education. Actually, I am old enough to have known people who went through the Great Depression and studied it a great deal. Things were so bad that people were meeting across the country at communist party gatherings. That is why during the McCarthy hearings you actually had people who knew people who went to communist meetings. FDR's programs were a way to take the wind from the communist movement in this country. FDR was hardly a commie sympathizer, he was from very old money.
The problem with your world view is you believe that there is a such a thing as a free lunch. It takes money to run a large country as ours. You have to pay your fair share. I am happy to pay taxes, because that means I am making money. If I don't make money, I pay no taxes. I believe that you pay your fair share to have a government there when there is a major disaster, epidemic, or terrorist attack. I like paying for the Coast Guard who everyday goes out and save people's lives. It takes money for law enforcement, a judicial system, immigration offices, or NOAA which tracks storms and saves lives. There is the US Geological Survey which tracks earthquakes and guides builders to make safer buildings. You gonna cut those things?

The truth is that the American Communists were upset at the "humanist form of capitalism" of the FDR administration. A rational mind would see that if you are ultra rich property owner who holds investments in stocks and bonds like the Roosevelts did, you are vested in the capitalist system. A mind capable of grasping nuance would know that fighting for regulation of capitalism is not communism.

Every cut you make creates potentially more costly consequences.
Do you want government to stop making sure transportation is safe? Do you want government to stop testing the safety of your food or drugs? How about cutting infrastructure to our roads and bridges? Why don't we cut scientific research that has helped private industry innovate? How about we cut the FAA, because we can trust the airlines to make sure all their systems are up to date and safe, right? The problem with your movement is that you take for granted all the programs that keep us safe. The whole entire reason these programs exist is because private sector and citizens have no time nor expertise, not desire to do the work. All your cuts will add more and more people to the unemployment lines to compete with all the unemployed now.

If you have studied the constitution you would realize there is nothing in that document that prohibits social security.

A flat tax as in a flat percentage of sales, I assume. (I actually know somebody who believes in a flat COST tax — like some sort of "America membership fee".) But doesn't this disproportionately impact those who make less money, since the percentage of money spent decreases as income rises? My understanding is that the Fair Tax plan attempts to alleviate that with tax credits up to a certain amount. I mean, really, should the government be taxing the food and shelter that people need to simply survive?

I agree, by the way, that I would absolutely not be okay with the federal government controlling all means of production — just as I'm not okay with any one company (or cabal of companies) dominating a particular market or service and maintaining that control via anti-competitive practices. In some ways, these companies scare me MORE, because they're worldwide, and not beholden to any one country's laws.

I volunteer at my son's school to make up for all the cuts that have been made in school. I give up income to do so, because not enough Americans care about education. I vote to raise my taxes and fees to make sure our parks, libraries, school programs, infrastructure, and other programs up and running.

I know you are not old enough to remember what our country was like when abortion was illegal. Criminalizing abortion did not stop abortions. Women died.
I was tabling once for reproductive rights in the early 1990s. This republican in his sixties came up to our table and said that he was more for reproductive rights than any of us. For a moment we were dubious, then he told us that his mother died of a botched abortion. He then went to the large postcard going to GHW Bush in support of reproductive rights. I constantly was approached by a couple of generations of older people thanking me because they remember how bad it was before Roe.
Reproductive rights protect women who want to keep a pregnancy as much as those who don't. A nation that can criminalize abortion can also make it mandatory, since the underlying assumption is women have no sovereignty over their bodies.

Your side would deny preventative healthcare for kids and cut welfare which would mostly impact kids because they are the bulk of the recipients. You care less about kids.
You would cut the EPA which would effect the type of environment (ie. water, air, soil) that we hand to our kids and grandkids.
Your side has shown over and over again you would sell your kids and grandkids down the river to help your own personal comfort.

I used to escort people to family planning clinics because I believe that not having health insurance and having to have ob/gyn services at a clinic shouldn't violate ones privacy. I was always very polite to the prolifers and saved their bacon when a husband wanted to beat them up for telling their seven year old daughter that her pregnant mommy coming in for prenatal care was a murderer. I also watched while a leader of the local prolife group locked himself in the van and locked up the 911 line keeping emergency calls from coming through.

So if I lost my job due to layoffs, lost the house and the cars, couldn't afford new clothes, couldn't afford the medication I require, and could barely afford to eat, I'd be able to pull myself out of it if I worked hard enough. I'm sorry, I just don't see how that could be true. I might be able to find work part-time at minimum wage, but that's hardly going to cover food, much less medicine and shelter. Without clean clothes and a reliable source of showers there's no way to get a professional position of any kind. And none of this takes into account the fact that, without a car, transportation to these jobs is utterly out of the question.

I believe in personal responsibility. I believe in the value of honest work. But I don't believe that realistically any person in America can "pull himself up by his bootstraps" without SOME help.

And seriously, don't pull the whole "their/your" bit. I've really been enjoying this exchange; can we not spoil it with name-calling?

The Republican Party developed the Southern Strategy by embracing all kinds of racism. Robert Byrd was a clan member in the 1940s and opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act. I am a mom. Abstinence education is a PROVEN FAILURE. It has been proven to only delay out-of-wedlock sex for an average of 18 months, then these kids are more likely to get pregnant or contract and spred STDs because the Abstinence only education demonizes birth control.

For many decades, many generations of Bastards were born. I was born out-of-wedlock in the mid sixties. There are millions of us that serve as proof that telling teens and young adults to wait til marriage NEVER worked.
There is no safety net for rape victims.

Let's start by examining your belief that no one in America is capable of achieving prosperity without "some help".

First off, it will not surprise you to learn that I vehemently disagree with that position.

Government has erected barriers to entry, and that is one of the main reasons we have unemployment in double digits in this country.

Other reasons include: NAFTA (both parties guilty), Unions (all Democrat), illegal immigration (Dems and RINO's) and one of the highest corporate tax rates on the planet (mostly Dems). Couple that with the cheap price of overseas slave labor and there is WHY we have unemployment.

What ObamaCare does is take that problem and make it MUCH worse. While we're on that subject, how does a 2700 page bill get passed into law with no one reading it and no bipartisan support? Face it…the DNC has made a mockery of the system. They have no honor, no morals and no sense. It has become the Party of tyrants and dictators. They're hanging pictures of Mao on the National Christmas tree, for God's sake! The man was a mass murderer!

My question to your friends is simply this: Have you no shame? You steal elections, you keep "enemies" lists, you harass citizens on their own property, you've corrupted our schools, our media, our Churches and our government. And, all the while, you expect the average citizen to believe you can be trusted? It strains credulity.

They say "don't call me a Communist" at the same time they advocate government takeover of 33% of the US auto industry (I'll never buy GM again as long as I live), the banking and insurance industries, health care (one sixth of the entire economy). If my mother decided to terminate the pregnancy, I would not have the opportunity to have an opinion on the matter, would I? I believe in reproductive rights for all women for whatever they decide even if they decide to keep a child.

For my work in Adoption reform and advocacy, I was recognized by several prolife groups in the 1990s. I worked and supported organizations that supported mothers in keeping their children and birthmothers after they relinquished for adoption.
I also have been a vocal supporter of single mothers so they can get affordable childcare so they can go to school and work.
I am a vocal supporter of comprehensive sex education and free access to birthcontrol — the best way to prevent or diminish the need for abortion.

Unlike republicans, I do not demonize poor mothers. Every birth is sacred and all mothers should be supported. If all of you join me in this, more women would carry their pregnancies to term.
I have tabled with grandmothers and mothers over the years.
Interesting fact: Abortion wasn't even considered a sin by the Catholic Church until the later 1800s when women were dying by drinking chemicals and other forms of self-inflicted abortion due to the fact they had no birth control or say in saying no to their husbands. This is around the same time homeless kids were on the streets in urban areas were spirited away to work on farms in the midwest. Children who were not orphans stood on boxes to be picked for farmwork — thus "put up for adoption" was born.

I am a wealth of information on these topics and have done quite a bit to prevent abortion.

Actually my child will do fine. He is getting a great education in a district with involved parents. We can afford enrichment classes. He lives in a region that has diversity, opportunity, culture, and places where he can hike and enjoy the outdoors. We save more than we spend and we give back to our community. Since his parents both have a college, statistically he will do better in school.
Our kid knows the value of saving and being frugal already, and also how to be socially responsible and the value of hard work.
My child also knows that you never wish harm on someone if you disagree with them.
My politics have done more benefits to children — lower class sizes, more funding for pre-school and child care, nutrition programs, immunization programs and early preventative health care, afterschool programs that keep kids out of trouble, arts and music programs that help kids with conventional school subjects, and the list goes on. All of these programs have been cut and will be cut by republicans.

I saw down the thread another lapse in your American History. MacArthur was fired because he forgot that the military takes orders from a civilian commander in chief. You may disagree with Truman, but the advent of the nuclear era complicated warfare. MacArthur was not sensitive to this change and was risking a escalation that could lead to nuclear war. If we let the military go unchecked, then we are in a different country.

It is none of your business how much we make. Needless to say my child will do just fine and is very happy and well loved. He is ready to take on the world. He will be able to go to any school he wants, travel, and have a lot of opportunities.

I have never belonged to a union, but I support unions. My life isn't ruled by fear. I always worked for the private sector or non-profits.

Union workers who make a good salary make the consumer driven economy run. If workers have a disposable income they buy things and create jobs. When workers make more money they pay more taxes which goes to our infrastructure that benefits businesses get goods and services to customers.

In my neck of the woods, there seem to be more people who thought they could buy that $750K house in Republican strongholds like Darien on their $80K salary. Or they make $150K and keep havin' the babies and discovered lo and behold, their finances are tight.So instead of trading in the Hummer or the Land Rover, they walk on the property. They sure aren't 'the poors'. The lower income folks bought in little dump towns like the one I live in–where at least homes are affordable and your neighbors are actually friendly. So don't assume it's Reagan's make-pretend 'Welfare Queen' scenario that fueled this mess to this degree.

I never confused the documents…that is a flaw in your own logic. I merely pointed out the fact that the Declaration formed the foundation of the Constitution.

Even you can not be so dull as to deny this. So what have we established? Jefferson WAS a Christian…and not a Deist, as the Commie Progressives in this country have taught our children.

Therefore, Jefferson believed, as all Christians do, that our Rights come from our "Creator". It is therefore impossible to abrogate those Rights without the consent of the holder of those Rights. I DO NOT CONSENT. I WILL NEVER CONSENT.

If our Government seeks to force consent from me…there will be open war. I AM Government. That is what makes us unique in all of Creation! Your side lost. Get used to it. I did actually note that, and also that thanks to the abject failure that was the Articles of Confederation, one can't even claim that there was an unbroken line between the Declaration and the Constitution- half of the Constitution is derived from mistakes made and lessons learned with the Articles. i just decided to humor him anyway, because it's obvious he's never read anything in the other document, either, past "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness"

Anyway, since the Articles were also the Constitution's antecedent, don't they also have the same moral force as the Constitution? What about the Magna Carta? Really, shouldn't we be using just any old document we can find to base our laws on, if they were written before 1787? And if so, why does NeedsMoarSanity love Sharia law so much?

For extra giggles, read his bio- "If it isn't in the Constitution, I don't want to hear it!" Unless I made myself look like a stereotypical teabagging moran, by confusing it with something from another document! In that case, I actually meant to say the Constitution, Declaration, Magna Carta, and whatever else is out there!

Lets get one thing straight, like all presidents Bush did some good thing and some bad things. The tarp scheme was one of the worst things he did during his presidency, but lets remember that congress was controlled by the dems and all bills come from congress for the president to sign. The bail out should never have happened and it should never have been extended beyond its original intent, but as we all know tarp was extended to help out a couple auto companies and lets see who did that stunt? When govt steps in to pick winners and losers the tax payers lose every time.

Anyone who willing accepted mortgages that they knew were beyond their means should have to also accept the consequences of those decisions. The govt should not step in and bail out these people regardless of who they are or how much they earn. By the way this is not exclusively a repub trend, there are people who are dems that have done it also. This is a serious problems for all Americans that needs to be dealt with.

Here is idea I heard the other day, how about we let every one that is upside down on their mortgages walk away from the property with no harm to their credit? This would allow the mortgage holders to liquidate the property for what ever value they could get for it.;

You know, I hadn't really given any thought before to using the Articles of Confederation to reply to the specious Christianist notion that the Founders were divinely inspired and intended to create a Christian Nation<sup>TM</sup>–if the project was all directed by God, why the first-draft fail? Not that this would really hold any water with these folks who think that a document which only contains restrictions on religion is actually modeled on the Bible, but what the hell.
