42 Million Americans On Food Stamps Now; Need Rising By 20% Per Year

by Ken Layne

Don't, uhh, mess with Texas? Are you one of the lucky one-in-eight Americans who would go hungry if not for government-provided debit cards that can be used to buy food? The average monthly benefit is $134, and that’s generally provided in the form of an EBT card that can be used to buy food. JPMorgan provides a lot of those cards and the infrastructure behind it — there’s your financial services recovery, ha? — and the director of that program says he’s seeing “continued volume increases, at a level that’s not been seen before.” How big an increase? 20% this year, and that’s after rising 25% last year.

And JPMorgan expects another big spike as millions more long-term unemployed run out their extended jobless benefits and need to go onto food stamps to survive.

Luckily for jobless, poor, hungry Americans, Newt Gingrich has decided they will be an effective punching bag for next month’s midterms! Everybody hates people when they’re down, right? Poor people suck!

MINNEAPOLIS — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is advising Republican candidates on November’s ballots to frame the choice for voters between Democrats as “the party of food stamps” while selling the GOP as “the party of paychecks.”

[...]

“Most Americans would like to get a paycheck,” Gingrich said. “Most Americans would not like to be forced to have food stamps handed out by liberal Democrats.”

Can you imagine accepting government help from a dirty fucking “liberal Democrat”? This is why all the out-of-work construction laborers and gung-ho Iraq veterans with PTSD who for some reason identify as Republicans have all quit taking all government handouts! No more food stamps or farm subsidies or Medicare or Social Security or Head Start or VA hospitals or school lunch programs. It’s especially heartening to see all the angry old Fox News viewers angrily marching out of the socialist Senior Centers and refusing those lunches five days a week. [Bloomberg/AP]

Those nasty Democrats, holding people at gunpoint and forcing them to have food when they would rather just starve to death.

Yeah, Newt, the Democratic party is the party of food stamps, FDR created them back in the thirties; that is something to be proud of, you steaming pile of evil shit.

mog253 October 8, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Doesn't this mean that 42 million people will be voting Dem, if just to keep food on the table??? Or will they continue to rant about socialism?

Redhead October 8, 2010 at 8:42 pm

"Those nasty Democrats, holding people at gunpoint and forcing them to have food when they would rather just starve to death."

The Dems run eating disorder rehabs?

kenlayisalive October 11, 2010 at 8:49 pm

That's really an insult to steaming piles of evil shit.

Rambone October 8, 2010 at 3:41 pm

All you gotta do to make the teabaggers stop using food stamps is mark them as halal.

marrcus October 8, 2010 at 3:45 pm

On the bright side, it's nice that Republicans have their own LaRouche types now in the Tea Party.

Sgt_Biyatch October 8, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Teabaggers don't know what "halal" means. You have to use their spoon-fed talking points, like "Food Stamps, Sharia Law approved!"

Gratuitous World October 8, 2010 at 3:42 pm

Newt is right. Forget Food Stamps. The GOP would rather have the govt. subsidize Wal-Mart to provide intervenous high fructose corn syrup to millions of Mericans.

nounverb911 October 8, 2010 at 3:52 pm

While providing jobs to millions of Chinese.

Newtie, your time came and then it went. STFU, please, and take up a hobby. Something dangerous, like skydiving or rock-climbing, please.

Puerile idiot.

JMPEsq October 8, 2010 at 3:52 pm

He's got a hobby: getting married, wedding after wedding after wedding.

One-in-eight Republican politicians are on wife stamps — the remaining seven-in-eight are on each other.

Newt is big enough to be the climbee. Hey, a little fixed protection in the folds then BELAY ON.
(Warning: don't visualize this)

prommie October 8, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Shit, with these EBT cards, you can't go through the register buying a single apple each time, until you have amassed enough coins in change that you can go buy a 40 of Olde English 800. Whats the fucking world coming to, all of the traditions of my youth are falling by the wayside, just what the fuck will become of this nation, is what I want to know. I am feeling a numbness, in my extremities, Wonkette, and a ringing in my ears, if I am absent, for a few days, please, don't be alarmed, its a spiritual malaise, and the only solution is more cowbell, and gin, and oh what the hell, any port in a storm, maybe even some marital sex.

Tommmcatt October 8, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Move to California and smoke the legal weed, Prom. It makes everything so niiiiicccceeee…..

Troubledog October 8, 2010 at 3:57 pm

When I was a kid, Dad used to make me do that. Buy a can of soup, or a box of mac and cheese, with this $1 food coupon. Until he had enough coins for beer and a pack of cigarettes.

The larger denomination ones weren't valid unless removed from the coupon book in the presence of the checkout lady. This deterred people from using them as gray market currency. So using up the singles was the way to go.

mumbly_joe October 8, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Nah, the trick now is to troll around the store for someone shady, but not too shady (i.e, has actual ameros), who's willing to let you buy their food for them and then pay you back cash. At least, until the supermarket kicks you out for harassing customers by trying to induce them to commit a felony.

Surprisingly enough, given the neighborhood, I've only had this happen to me once. Typically, it's just people trying to return food items that they just bought with food stamps, which generally doesn't work.

Moonbat October 12, 2010 at 9:49 am

You'd be surprised how often peeps on Food Stamps try to get the cashier to just straight-up take stamps for money.

You'd probably be somewhat less surprised at how often they're successful.

GOPCrusher October 8, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Oh yeah, during the Raygun Depression, people used to sell their food stamps for cash and then score some wine to go with the government hand out cheese and crackers parties we used to throw.
And there was no stigma about using the food stamps to buy macaroni and cheese or ramen noodles to eat, because no one had jobs and we all used the stamps.

transfatz October 10, 2010 at 3:34 am

Good luck on that last one.

Buzz Feedback October 8, 2010 at 3:46 pm

Perhaps I can skip the food stamps and one of Newt's ex-wives can make me dinner. Preferably not the one he left while she had cancer.

PsycWench October 8, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Food stamps = liberal Democrats = no teabaggers on food stamps, right?
Ha,ha,ha, NO. A person's gotta get that daily corn syrup intake somehow.

Actually I feel bad about a bitchy comment earlier about how I had a job b/c I got an education (sniff).

Mumbletypeg October 8, 2010 at 4:10 pm

I thumbed that comment up. It wasn't a thumb-jerk reaction either, I got your point. (this one, right?)

PsycWench October 8, 2010 at 4:32 pm

Yes, it was. Thanks for the props, kind Mumbletypeg. I was hoping my intended point would get through. I know it got some thumbs down.

prommie October 8, 2010 at 4:33 pm

I didn't think you were bitchy. Unemplyment is 4% for those with a BA or better. This is the "information" economy, thanks Mr. Bill Clinton. But not everyone is a brainiac, and there needs to be meaningful work at a living wage for everyone.

Tommmcatt October 8, 2010 at 4:41 pm

The horrible tyranny of this thumbs thing! Plus, it has pitted me in a death match with my dear buddies Prommie and Manchu, with their ever-increasing pee score, damn them.

ADD: There! Did you see? I posted this comment and my score went down! WHY?!?!?! Oh the humanity!

EBT: Emery Bird Thayer?

Gopherit October 8, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Fuck you, Gingrich. Today's economy reminds me a lot of the economy of the 80s when trickle down was the stream of piss the working class felt from high level white collar workers and the rich. Not everyone on SNAP is unemployed. There are plenty of people who have jobs who just can't make enough to survive in an urban center on one or even two minimum wage jobs……the kind of jobs the republicans used to love to point at as "job growth." And with the republicans continuing to support companies moving more and more of their operations offshore while still demanding corporate tax cuts, this won't end any time soon.

deelzebub October 8, 2010 at 4:24 pm

It was job growth….each full-time pensioned job with benefits was replaced by two or three shitty part-time positions with no benefits. Voila.

GOPCrusher October 8, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Remember in 2003, the Labor Department under the Bush Misadministration reclassified fast food employees as "manufacturing" jobs. And despite that fact, in 2004 he still went into the election as the first President since Herbert Hoover to have less employment at the end of his term then he had at the beginning.

Gopherit October 8, 2010 at 5:47 pm

Sure, but……USA! USA! USA!

buytechnology October 8, 2010 at 9:10 pm

Remember in the 80's when shit was a lot better than they are now? Fuck your food stamps.

"Party of paychecks…" Yeah, little, shitty, no-unconstitutional-minimum-wage paychecks.

Naked_Bunny October 8, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Hey, he said "paychecks", not "living wages". I got a paycheck when I was a paperboy, but I'd hate to live on $50/month.

MINNEAPOLIS — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is advising Republican candidates on November’s ballots to frame the choice for voters between Democrats as “the party of food stamps” while selling the GOP as “the party of paychecks.”

Really what Newt meant was GOP as "the party of abandoned cancerous wives".

Tommmcatt October 8, 2010 at 3:52 pm

The party of failed anti-abortionists.

slappypaddy October 8, 2010 at 3:51 pm

newt's right, you know. the american free market alternative to food stamps is the best. it's the alternative where all the pissed-off, unemployed, hungry millions pick up guns–many of them have guns already, and hey, with guns you can get more guns–and settle some outstanding issues regarding social inequities. that the likes of newt would be among the first to experience the leveling effects of such a transition probably eludes mr. ging-grinch.

prommie October 8, 2010 at 4:35 pm

JMPEsq October 8, 2010 at 4:41 pm

It happened to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, and Gingrich doesn't even want to let the poor eat cake.

zhubajie October 8, 2010 at 7:42 pm

More likely they'd be attacking other poor people — blacks, Hispanics, Muslims, Liberals in general. Poor Whites have always been the storm troopers for the Rich Whites.

x111e7thst October 8, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Quite a few Iraq veterans with PTSD and unemployed construction laborers (there is some overlap between these categories) come in the food pantry where I volunteer. They seem more beaten down and hopeless than angry or actively Republican.
One vet who used to come in every Saturday apparently killed himself last week. Nice kid. Used to talk a lot about going to college.

ok back to making fun of stuff

Ken Layne October 8, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Where I'm typing today, the unemployment rate is 16% and even in good times about a third of the people are subsisting on SSI and food stamps. I have never seen so many welfare pickups covered with so many idiot gun & gop stickers.

Interesting how the wingnuts can complain about how the deficit spending, but as soon as the question of eliminating the Bush Tax Cuts, which are adding 700 billion dollars a year to the deficit, suddenly they are more concerned with creating jobs.
Because giving tax cuts to the wealthy have proved over the last 30 years, to be the sure way to job creation.

Sort of odd how poverty is moving from the inner city to the suburbs and exurbs without bringing "socialism" along. Are there theories to explain this?

I really do hate him. He gets a government pension and free health insurance for himself and all off his current and former wives for life, right?

It's so much easier to judge when all of your basic needs are taken care of (by the taxpayers), isn't it Newt?

Badonkadonkette October 8, 2010 at 3:53 pm

If I understand Newt correctly, the choice we have is between not having a job but having food and health care, and not having a job, food, or health care? Because I sure as shit don't see Republicans cutting checks for anyone but themselves.

el_donaldo October 8, 2010 at 3:53 pm

What happened to Dems being the party of Shariah? Muslims and Mexicans no longer scary enough so we're going back to hating on black people?

Aw, cut it out. If these losers want to waste their paychecks on rent and medical care and clothes for their children, they don't deserve food stamps.

And how cum distinguished Republican foreign policy expert Richard Lugar of Indiana is such a fierce advocate of food stamps, instead of, say, just giving people some money and allowing them to retain a shred of their dignity and buy what they want?

Could it be because Indiana = corn = corn syrup? Nah, Lugar's a statesman.

Do we get gourmet donuts with that?

Troubledog October 8, 2010 at 4:03 pm

First, let there be no mistake. There isn't enough Purell in the world for me to shake hands with Newt Gingrich.

But I will say one thing for him. As he goes about his day, he honestly and sincerely believes in his heart that he is doing good work that will make the world a better place.

In my book, this puts him one notch above a fuckstick like DeMint, who is only sincere about wanting to be the king of the world.

So, Ken, we're all going to be permanently unemployed and starve to death? Hooray! Happy weekend, folks!

That man couldn't have a more perfect name if he tried.
As if there aren't tons of working class/rural farming families/Fox News devotees using food stamps. Come on now. But oh sure, it's because of the Democrats they need them and/or the cognitive dissonance is so great that they don't even connect their situation to the larger picture in the first place. "Yeah for me and mine it's just a leg up, but all those other folks out there are abusin' it." It's so sad. I was in line behind a mom not too long ago who was using her WIC card to get groceries–just milk, eggs, other staples. Well apparently she grabbed the wrong brand of milk so the cashier had to go through some rigamarole to get the right one, and send someone to the milk aisle to get a WIC approved milk. Of course some jackass behind me is all mumbling about the fact that a person on welfare was trying to buy fancy stuff on the taxpayers' money. Because that's helpful to that woman and her little kid right then. Not that he cared about being helpful, obviously. I've never wanted to have some extra cash more in my life so I could just buy her stuff and get her away from that guy, nor have I ever wanted to punch a guy at the grocery store more than him.

Also, re: that picture: Timer?! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3jgo5ea_zc

GOPCrusher October 8, 2010 at 5:55 pm

In a town here in Iowa, a down on his luck guy took the opportunity to stand on a corner by a local church, on a Sunday morning, with a sign that said "Will work for food". The parishioners called the police and had the person arrested.

Jerri October 8, 2010 at 6:08 pm

Well clearly that's what Christ would have done.

Stories like that make me wish there really were a heaven so those folks could get a nice talking to from the Lord himself.

thecryingeagle October 11, 2010 at 1:39 pm

My rural redneck sister was in line behind a woman and kids with a WIC card a few weeks ago. The cashier was really bitchy and mean to the woman and complained about her taxes paying for food for someone else's kid. My sister promptly turned around and abandoned her cart with like $200 worth of stuff, told the cashier and the manager to fuck off and left. She went next door and bought the lady and her kids ice cream. Thank God there are some people in Bumfukistan who see through this shit.

Naked_Bunny October 8, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Newt, I'll buy your "tax cuts = more jobs" line when you guys pass a law requiring employers to hire people with their tax cut, rather than sending it offshore or giving it to stockholders and executives. After all, if that's what's gonna happen anyway, then you won't mind enforcing it, right? Right?

Naked_Bunny October 8, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Food stamps will turn you into a gay atheist commie Muslim, y'know.

The thing is, plenty of people who are using food stamps will vote for these guys. They will assume their food stamps are safe because they are just honestly unemployed; it's those other undeserving leeches who will lose 'em.

This is one of the reasons I'm not a real Marxist, but I'm just saying, next time some assgoblin tries to bring it up, you can refer to His Newtness as "Comrade"
