Charlie Crist is having a lot of problems lately with this whole idea of "being forced to take positions on issues." It is hard to do such things when you want to occupy an invisible center of the political spectrum that does not exist when everyone is dissolving into two camps that just throw poop at each other. And rightly so, as who wants to get hit with poop without anyone to root for? But when it comes to gay marriage, that is apparently very close to Charlie Crist's heart, because even when he decides he has to be against it, he sounds very confused.
From the transcript of Sunday's CNN State of the Union , when Crist was asked about his previous support for a constitutional ban on gay marriage:
I feel the same way, yes, because I feel that marriage is a sacred institution, if you will.
If you will? You are asking Ed Henry for permission to think marriage is sacred?
But I do believe in tolerance. I'm a live and let live kind of guy, and while I feel that way about marriage, I think if partners want to have the opportunity to live together, I don't have a problem with that.
Oh, he's a live and let live guy. Which means helets dudes suck him offdoes not want to use state troopers to spend all their time rounding up people of the same sex who live in the same dwelling and putting them in jail, where they will live separately. TOLERANCE!
But later his campaign released a statement saying he was in fact against a constitutional amendment against gay marriage and is only for an amendment to Florida's constitution outlawing it. Only in Florida is marriage supposed to be sacred, apparently.
Well, everything is in a matter of degree, Ed, and when it becomes to the institution of marriage, I believe that it is between a man and a woman, it's just how I feel.
Right. [ CNN ]
Clearly, straddling the issue is not one of Charlie's fave positions.
