Steve King Will Judge the Americanness Of Your Experience

by Lauri Apple

It don't get much more American than this blue-eyed Iowan with a comboverIowa Congressman and Bible interpretationist Steve King must be feeling bored and restless in these dog days of summer — or maybe he’s just riding a sweet corn sugar high — because he’s awfully feisty these days. It’s like he’ll say anything to get some attention! At least we can say he adds some “spontaneity” to Capitol Hill life.

At a recent town hall meeting, for example, King agreed with one of his wingnut followers that President Barack Imam Obama is a foreign-born Marxist muslin man. The muckrakers at Think Progress captured this illuminating conversation on a recording device, for posterity:

KING: I’ve just started to think about what we need to do and I have made this argument for a long time now that I am in the business of seeking to embarrass the administration into enforcing the law, particularly with regard to immigration.

BYSTANDING CONSTITUENT: He won’t do that. He’s a Marxist! He’s a Muslim Marxist.

KING: He’s at least a Marxist. And he surely understands the Muslim culture.

CONSTITUENT: He surely does. That’s where he grew up with, that’s his culture.

KING: He doesn’t have an American experience. He does not have an American experience.

CONSTITUENT: He didn’t grow up in America.

KING: Mmhmm.

King does not go on to define what “an American experience” is, because even he probably realizes that this phrase does not mean anything.

King also didn’t like how House Speaker Nancy Pelosi interrupted everybody’s August vacaciones by making them travel back to DC just to vote on giving $26 billion to the stupid fucking schools. It’s all a “blatant money-laundering scheme”:

“Much of those checks that will be distributed will have an automatic deduction in them that will transfer some of that money into the coffers of the unions and their political action money will go into the campaign accounts of 95 percent Democrats,” King says.

Pelosi just had to spend some money to feed her shopaholism, he says. As any good Republican knows, you call Congress back during a recess ONLY if the matter at hand involves some politically useful Culture-War spectacle. [Think Progress/Radio Iowa/Washington Post]

The American Experience is shooting a raccoon with your .50 Desert Eagle.

BlueStateLiberal August 17, 2010 at 12:14 pm

Hair parted on the side, flag pin, flag tie, can’t understand that the term “Marxist Muslim” makes no sense–a genuine teatard to warm the heart!

Oblios Cap August 17, 2010 at 12:14 pm

How much does shilling pay these days?

mumblyjoe August 17, 2010 at 12:19 pm

And Steve King as least a Fascist, as evidenced by his willingness to use a fictional “American-ness” standard of peoples’ life stories as a bludgeon against their legitimacy. And, he surely understands the White Supremacist culture, seeing as that’s basically what he is, or at least whose memes he keeps on parroting.

If only he were a prominent public speaker who used symbols for things, those things would invite a much simpler comparison. Alas.

SayItWithWookies August 17, 2010 at 12:22 pm

And he surely understands the Muslim culture.

Holy xenophilia Batman! Understanding the Muslim culture is tantamount to walking around the Ka’aba three times, flying yourself into the World Trade Center and then turning yourself into a mosque right next door! What would this country look like if all red-blooded Americans suddenly started “understanding” other cultures (including ones that actually exist, unlike the Muslim culture)? Why, instead of backyard barbecues, we’d all be standing around the tandoor oven in our dashikis and saris, drinking fermented yak milk and rocking out to Ravi Shankar while thick clouds of patchouli barely conceal the scent of the indica. Or, as I call it, Tuesday.

freakishlystrong August 17, 2010 at 12:23 pm

“Lifeless eyes, like dolls eyes”. That’s all I think of when I see this hysterical jackhole.

user-of-owls August 17, 2010 at 12:24 pm

define what “an American experience” is, because even he probably realizes that this phrase does not mean anything.

Not so. American Experience does mean something. It means 78-episode series about baseball or the civil war or jazz on PBS.

Steve King surely doesn’t understand the Ken Burns culture.

queeraselvis v 2.0 August 17, 2010 at 12:24 pm

He’s at least a Marxist

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Also (h/t to mumblyjoe), I’d definitely hit it. Then I’d put my car in reverse and hit it again.

Lascauxcaveman August 17, 2010 at 12:25 pm

“American Experience” was a teevee show on the PBS, so this means Steve King is a commie.

V572625694 August 17, 2010 at 12:25 pm

You know, there are so manyMuslim Marxists around! That’s why Saudi Arabia is such a workers’ paradise, what with the free medical care and government ownership of the oil, etc. And womens’ rights…well, okay, bad example.

Gratuitous World August 17, 2010 at 12:26 pm

“Me? I try hard not to understand shit, so I must be the most American!”

mmmhmmm

mumblyjoe August 17, 2010 at 12:27 pm

Also, I, for one, am outraged -outraged!- that more unions don’t contribute heavily to politicians that hate they very fact that they exist, and want to do everything in their power to make sure that the people they represent don’t get paid with money, ever. Why in the world would teachers not want to contribute their pay to the people standing between them and any future pay whatsoever?

If TruckNutz ever waddles over to this thread: this is actually why so many minorities vote Democratic; it’s called “voting one’s self-interest”, not “slavery”. Oh, and also, most of us love frivolous invocations of America’s history of slavery about as much as Jewish people love it when people frivolously compare things to the Holocaust, so you’re not really winning us over on that count, either.

Geogre August 17, 2010 at 12:30 pm

The only American Experience Steve King knows about is the one that comes on TV, and he wants it canceled, because it’s communist to have PBS.

So, President Obama is “definitely Marxist?” I want a reporter, any reporter, to ask Steve King to define “Marxism” and the ways a person can determine if her or his neighbors might be Marxists, too. Perhaps there should be a magazine with a list of names of suspected Marxists so that businesses can be sure to be 100% Marxist-free?

I guess Attack! is already taken.

weejee August 17, 2010 at 12:31 pm

He doesn’t have an American experience. He does not have an American experience.

I have to agree with King on that, at least from corn country perspective. It’s twue, it’s twue. Barry Hussein did not grow up surrounded by peoples sucking on big agri-business’ cock. Hiz first exposure to that wonderment was in the Illinois Statehouse.

Lascauxcaveman August 17, 2010 at 12:31 pm

As a white person, I’m thanking God we whiteys are very soon to be just another minority among many in the good ol’ US of A. Every time I hear fascist ‘tards like King his ilk, I think, “C’mon, Browns, Asians; breed faster!”

user-of-owls August 17, 2010 at 12:31 pm

“KING: Mmhmm.”

Ur doin it wrong Steve. It’s ‘errrr, errrrr.’

Serolf Divad August 17, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Jesus Christ, the GOP has thrown away all pretense. It’s basically transformed itself into one big Klan rally, hasn’t it?

Beowoof August 17, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Yeah that American experience for a black man, being followed around in any business you go into, being called ni**er, discriminated against in housing, and so many other areas of life by the neo-nazi teabagger crowd. That is an experience most of us could do without.

just pixels August 17, 2010 at 12:36 pm

The Repubicans have set the impeachment bar even lower, if such a thing is possible. Not securing the border? Ye gods, after 9/11 we coulda kicked Bush out on that one. Who knew it was that easy?

[re=640142]Lascauxcaveman[/re]: We’re going to have to start calling ourselves “Melanin-challenged Americans.” Bring on the minority status!

american mutt August 17, 2010 at 12:46 pm

Are you telling me the American experience has nothing to do with embracing cultures, attending an American University, having grandparents from Kansas and teaching constitutional law?? Shit. Obama’s doing it wrong!

freakishlystrong August 17, 2010 at 12:52 pm

What assholio really meant to say:

“The Sheriff is a ni..GONG..er! The Sheriff is a ni..GONG..er!”

Mad Brahms August 17, 2010 at 12:53 pm

Wow, I would expect this from Bachmann, but not from Representative Cornhole. Keep feedin’ that crazy, Steve! And then cry when someone runs against you for still not being far right enough.

Mad Brahms August 17, 2010 at 12:55 pm

[re=640129]SayItWithWookies[/re]: Hah, remember when W was all “we need to reach out to moderate Islam”? Those were the days. Also, man, I want to spend Tuesday at your place.

Come here a minute August 17, 2010 at 12:56 pm

Going to a fancy Ivy League law school is not the American Experience — why do you think all the Ivy League law schools are in Europe? And will they ever build one here?

donner_froh August 17, 2010 at 12:56 pm

Checks from the feds with deductions for the unions? That is a better deal than Walter Reuther or John L. Lewis ever came close to.

Gratuitous World August 17, 2010 at 12:58 pm

ironically, King’s “mmmhmmmm” was in the same cadence as the 54th Infantry’s during Glory’s campfire scene.

Naked Bunny with a Whip August 17, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Hint to Steve King: A congressman from a state with where only 1% of Americans live does not get to define the American experience.

user-of-owls August 17, 2010 at 1:07 pm

[re=640181]Naked Bunny with a Whip[/re]: We’re talking about Iowa, right? This must be a definition of “living” with which I am not familiar.

[re=640140]Geogre[/re]: I’d like for one of them, ANY of them, to be put on the spot long enough to explain just who Groucho Marx is, and why they hate him so much.

AuntieStupefaction August 17, 2010 at 1:12 pm

[re=640124]mumblyjoe[/re]: Sigh. Maybe we need more White Supremacists, at least they’re honest about their racism, hatred, desire to kill people who don’t look like them and think like them, etc. King is just the little jerk on the playground who yells “you suck” and then hides behind the recess lady, which amounts to his “American experience.”

mumblyjoe August 17, 2010 at 1:12 pm

[re=640151]Beowoof[/re]: Not actually a surprising, or fun one, but almost certianly a TRUEFACT:

That is precisely the American Experience that Steve King endorses for all non-whites. Because he’s very, very racist let’s honestly stop pretending he’s not.

Extemporanus August 17, 2010 at 1:14 pm

[re=640145]Serolf Divad[/re]:

Yep, pretty much. They seem to be specifically trying to drive minorities out of the GOP.

You also have to wonder what people in Hawaii think of these guys saying basically that growing up in Hawaii is not an American experience.

Wait did he compare funding schools to money laundering before, or after that cartoon last week?

yellowdogdem August 17, 2010 at 1:32 pm

I’d like it if Steve King would “make an impact” in just the way that Ted Stevens did (see Seattle newspaper headline).

“Much of those checks that will be distributed will have an automatic deduction in them that will transfer some of that money into the coffers of the unions and their political action money will go into the campaign accounts of 95 percent Democrats,” King says.”

they’re called union dues, you dumb motherfucker. not exactly a new concept.

GOPCrusher August 17, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Is it just me, or is there something hypocritical about a man supporting “no-bid” contracts to KBR and Halliburton now complaining about 26 billion being spent to keep teachers and firemen working?

Oblios Cap August 17, 2010 at 1:37 pm

You say “Bystanding Constituent”, I say “set-up”.

Hacklebarney August 17, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Please, for the love of all things good and to preserve my sanity, do not associate Steve King with the great people of Iowa. There are about 15-20 crazy wingnutters who live in the NW corner of the state who all breed amongst themselves and the result is Steve King.

I’m thinking about moving there simply so I can vote against this asshole.

foghornleghorn August 17, 2010 at 1:54 pm

Psychosis, abject hate of the non-pale, monolingualism. That’s what passes for American culture. How the f did we get to this point?

TeddyS August 17, 2010 at 1:58 pm

Steve King is right! We must impeach the Constitushun or at least unwrite an Amendment every day until that Marxist Muslim faux-President is birth-certificated to show he was truly born here as an anchor baby and not flown in as an egg from the plant Xanax. King knows Americans, and Obama is not one!

hmm, American Experience? Losing your virginity in the backseat of a US made car???

Winski August 17, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Sounds like a three stooges routine…King is actually TWO of the stooges…

undeadgoat August 17, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Well, “American Experience” was certainly the social studies class at my high school where teachers seemed very able to put whatever the fuck they wanted in their curriculum, so I’m going to agree with you that “this phrase does not mean anything.”
