Newt Gingrich Continues To Be Terrible On Mosque Issue, Is Joined By Anti-Defamation League

by Jack Stuef

They are so cute, but they just want your money.Newt Gingrich is very busy! Look, there he is, saying Sarah Palin will run for president! And wow, he wants us to explode the other two members of the “Axis of Evil!” But more importantly, it is his job to stoke fear over the proposed mosque near the World Trade Center site, so it is no surprise he is using that hate to raise money for himself. You know what is a surprise? The Anti-Defamation League is joining him in this hate.

Newt Gingrich is now fundraising off of his opposition to the Muslim community center in Lower Manhattan (the so-called Ground Zero Mosque), telling conservatives in an e-mail appeal to “Please SELECT HERE to STOP the Ground Zero mosque! Your decisive DONATION to Real Action will help us to RALLY and ACTIVATE all Americans, to TAKE REAL ACTION!”

The fundraising appeal…was blasted out to the e-mail list of WorldNetDaily Thursday to raise money for Renewing American Leadership Action. Gingrich is honorary chairman of the group and his spokesman Rick Tyler is its director. Founded last year to help Gingrich reach out to evangelicals, it is “dedicated to defending and advancing American civilization by restoring our Judeo-Christian heritage.”

It is good to see Newt Gingrich is not being cynical about this. He KNOWS how important he is and that he needs LOTS OF MONEY to stop the building of mosques in the United States, which is HIS JOB.

When Salon talked to Gingrich’s spokesman about this, he had a great response:

Newt Ginrich’s spokesman told Salon in a phone interview today that building a mosque at Ground Zero “would be like putting a statue of Mussolini or Marx at Arlington National Cemetery.”

Asked what the 19th century German philosopher had ever done to America, Gingrich spokesman Rick Tyler said: “Well let’s go with Lenin then.” Tyler explained that he was talking about Lenin, who died in 1924, as representative of the Cold War and ideologies opposed to America.

Not even going to try to make fun of the logic of this one. It is too hard.

Of course, there are others who know how IMPERATIVE it is that we hate people for their religion and try to keep them from practicing it. And those people are called the Anti-Defamation League. What?

We categorically reject appeals to bigotry on the basis of religion, and condemn those whose opposition to this proposed Islamic Center is a manifestation of such bigotry.

“Hah, I don’t think you guys know what ‘categorically reject’ and ‘condemn’ mean! For future reference: ‘condemn’ does not mean ‘join,’” said Pareene. Yes.

However, there are understandably strong passions and keen sensitivities surrounding the World Trade Center site. We are ever mindful of the tragedy which befell our nation there, the pain we all still feel – and especially the anguish of the families and friends of those who were killed on September 11, 2001.

The controversy which has emerged regarding the building of an Islamic Center at this location is counterproductive to the healing process. Therefore, under these unique circumstances, we believe the City of New York would be better served if an alternative location could be found.

Oh, we get it. Because there is controversy stemming from idiot bigots and scum like Gingrich about this, these Muslims have to stand aside. Hey, Anti-Defamation League, if the “healing process” is still going on, part of that process should probably be learning not to hate all Muslims because of what a handful of extremists did. That idea should maybe be confronted, don’t you think?

You know, it was once controversial that Jews existed and lived among society. Do you think Jews should have just given in to and accepted what the people who hated them wanted for them? We should probably know what you think about that from what you named your group, but we don’t. [Salon/Salon/ADL/Salon]

Jack, Jack, Jack … why do you keep expecting haters to be logical? Logic comes from the mind. Hate comes from the heart and, as Woody explained to New Yorkers a long time ago, the heart wants what it wants.

doxastic July 30, 2010 at 4:37 pm

“Selective Defamation League” doesn’t quite have the same ring…

AnnieGetYourFun July 30, 2010 at 4:38 pm

I’d feign shock at this, but the Anti-Defamation League isn’t exactly known for reasonable responses to anything, are they? Anyway, this’ll just be more fodder for the Muslims that already hate them. And so it goes.

JMP July 30, 2010 at 4:43 pm

Wasn’t Gingrich supposed to be a history professor at one point? Because he should know that Lenin didn’t really do anything against the US either, and the Cold War didn’t get started until after WWII, when Stalin was in charge and Lenin was long dead.

Even if that was the case, though, the analogy fails because he’s talking about individuals, not large diverse groups that include large numbers of individuals. It’s more like as if we allowed American soldiers of German, Japanese and Italian descent to be buried in Arlington, which I’m pretty sure we do.

SayItWithWookies July 30, 2010 at 4:43 pm

And as for that synagogue next to Golgotha…

TheCoolestGuyInTown July 30, 2010 at 4:43 pm

Wow, the GOP is working really hard to get the Muslim vote… to the Democrats.

Holy Cow!! July 30, 2010 at 4:44 pm

Christians have basically been using gays to cash in for decades. What’s one more scam based on an invisible man who lives in the sky anyway?

x111e7thst July 30, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I still think we should compromise and prohibit the construction of any kind of place of worship anywhere in the US. That way all the magical thinkers can be equally offended.

Ducksworthy July 30, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Raising money by by inciting racial hatred and religious intolerance? What a concept! Fleecing the gullible haters is everyone’s civic duty, also.

Every time I try to follow right-wing “logic” I die a little. I think they have given me wet brain.

Or maybe it’s the alcohol abuse. Either way, it’s their fault.

“While we don’t condone defaming Muslims, please refrain from defaming those who defame Muslims, because they are just saying what they honestly feel and are simply trying to heal the country by revealing how truly and undeniably dangerous Islam really is – in all of its forms – to all Americans and Jews. Muslims hate Jews, too.” -Official Response of the Anti-Defamation League

JMP July 30, 2010 at 4:56 pm

[re=629388]AnnieGetYourFun[/re]: You know, there’s a certain famous poem about the Germans first coming for the Jews that the ADL has referenced before that they might want to think about with this.

harry palmer July 30, 2010 at 4:59 pm

You’d think the ADL would know that Newt and his evangelicals put them in the same file as the Muslins. At the moment they happen to be below them on the “infidels to be thrown into the pit” list, but the next demagogue could change the order.

just pixels July 30, 2010 at 5:02 pm

[re=629388]AnnieGetYourFun[/re]: The ADL should have taken a principled stand against all forms of religious prejudice. Epic fail.

SeattleJoe July 30, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Right wing logic is simple. “Find a wedge issue and bang away at it.”

It is brilliant logic and it almost always works. Let me ask you: how many votes are Democrats gaining by being humane and reasonable about Muslims in general and the ground zero mosque in particular? What is the political advantage?

Now: What are the Republicans losing and what are they winning with their fanatical anti-Muslim stance?

There. See the logic?

chascates July 30, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Newt’s religion is ‘Gingrichism’; he’s just using Catholicism as a ploy.

GOPCrusher July 30, 2010 at 5:04 pm

[re=629400]JMP[/re]: He co-wrote a book about The Battle Of Gettysburg in which Lee defeated Meade’s Army of The Potomac. So I think the proper term is professor of revisionist history. Kind of like his current Crusade in which he’s trying to get the American public to believe that ALL Muslims are terrorists bent on the destruction of white Xtian Americans, without actually publically stating it.

LET ME SEE IF I UNDERSTAND THE NEWT…

All Islams is of the religion of death (9/11, subway bombs, etc.)
So no mosque 3 blocks from ground zero (where dozens of dirty Muslin employees worked died along side their real American friends.)

So then…

All Christians is of the religion of buttsects and pedophilia (priests, the pope, ted haggert etc.)
Tear down all the churches near elementary schools.

Let’s get started folks. (yes this analogy is worth repeating. Anal-ogy I made anther funny.)

Randomhookup July 30, 2010 at 5:08 pm

The mosque is to be known as Cordoba Center. That is fitting. In south central Spain, shoehorned into the center of the Mezquita of Córdoba, the Great Mosque of Cordova, is the Gothic Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. For yus English onlys, that be the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. And as we all learned from the biz schoolers, when you assume you make an ass of you and me, putting a Gothic Cathedral in the middle of this glorious mosque was and is an architectural abomination, an aesthetic goatfuck.

When Chris Colombo’s Queen Isabella kick the infidels out of that part of Andalusia, the over-the-top most Christian Queen had to show the Muslins whatfor and in short order build this Gothic monstrosity right square in the middle of the mosque. Well archeologists digging around on the grounds found that low and behold (and I do mean low, not lo) guess what they find under the mosque. Yeppers, an older Christian Visigothic church of St. Vincent. Keep on diggin’ does anyone wanna bet they’ll find old St. Vinnie’s was slammed on top of some pagan holy of holies in 600 AD? The winners always get to let their priests do their priestly pooping right on top of where there predecessor priests peed upon the holies of the previous tenants – ad nauseum.

rant > This bullshit will never change, ever. The greatest threat to world peace is arguably organized religion. /rant

Many Palestinians have diet at the hands of Israeli Jews in Jerusalem. I do noy find it appropriate that Jews should gather in or near said city. The same goes for Christians, Arabs, Persians, Muslims, Egyptians, Greeks, English, Italians, Macedonians, Germans, Mongols…well, to get to the point, I suppose, congratulation on your new Holy City, Togo. We hope you enjoy it.

a) Karl Marx lived in Manhattan for a while, trufax.

b) What did Lenin ever do to America, for that matter? Apart from reverse-deporting Emma Goldman, who was quite frankly asking for it.

Wha wha wha??? Newt, get a shovel.

It’s ironic that Bush could actually calm these folks down about their bigotry, and speak with some authority about how we shouldn’t hate a billion or so people because of the actions of a few hundred who share their ethnic heritage, but if Obama made similar statements to what Bush did in 2002, he’d be called a muslin terrist trying to install sharia law.

Advocatus_Diaboli July 30, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Mosque + 9/11 x Jew = Rudy Guiliani

Rudy Guiliani – 9/11 = mosque divided by Jew

Jew = Rudy Giliani x mosque

mosque = hitler!

Wouldn’t it be nice to donate negative money to Newt’s cause? Here’s how, just send them a money order for 1 cent. The handling and processing of that money order will definitely eat that up. And then they will put you on a mailing list and waste more money sending you appeals for more money. Who says you can’t get anything for a penny?

TheWaltonFirm July 30, 2010 at 8:13 pm

The thing is that a lot of people on the right wing are jealous of the zealotry on the extremist islamic fringe and seek to emulate it.

Lascauxcaveman July 30, 2010 at 8:16 pm

Hey, Anti-Defamation League, there’s an awful lot of controversy about Israel building settlements in disputed lands, so maybe they should start putting those settlements in less controversial areas, like Jersey, or Florida, or the Negev.

There’s also a lot of controversy about you fucking up every chance Gaza gets to get a little international relief, like food and medicine, so maybe…

(etc, etc)

Lascauxcaveman July 30, 2010 at 8:29 pm

NeatoTorpedo July 30, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Building an Islamic Center at Ground Zero actually doesn’t seem that different than building an a National Cemetery in General Lee’s backyard. Why couldn’t Lincoln just let the healing process take place?

Geogre July 30, 2010 at 9:26 pm

Newt’s actual speech is simply darling.

He said that the problem wasn’t in the Koran, it was in sharia law. He said that the problem with sharia law is that, unlike us, and his audience, those funny Muslims think that the law comes from God, not man. He then said that most of Islam is a culture, and that culture is opposed to us, and we have to stop it.

Now, what’s precious here is that, aside from shocking hypocrisy for the people who claim that they obey God’s law above man’s law when they want to shoot abortion providers, Newt is offering a mirror image of Osama bin Laden’s argument. He had no problem with Christianity the religion. He said the culture was the problem, and it was opposed to Islam, and that’s why all Christians had to die.

But, of course, that’s wrong, and Newt is always right, because Newt just wants discrimination and hate, and foreign wars, and things that go “boom!”

Geogre July 30, 2010 at 9:27 pm

Can we just say that Newt is a wanna be terrorist or a terror monger?

Of course. So let’s draw up a list of entities suitable for the Most Holy Sacred WTC site: McDonald’s (townhouse style), Duane Reade drug store, Hard Rock Cafe (with salvaged aluminum “grill” pieces from the collapsed towers and random jet parts blasted into the front facade), Dunkin Donuts Express, Borders, and the American Girl annex.

The ADL are pussies. I defamed the hell out of Ariel Sharon, saying that he was alive and well and playing piano in a whorehouse in Reno, NV, under the name “Rosie Sharon” following a Swiss sex change, and Marty Peretz didn’t even have the common courtesy to denounce me as a bastard and an enemy of civilization.

I think the ADL is losing their edge. Apart from all the young American Jews who could give a fuck if Israel is reduced to radioactive glass, I mean. Don’t they care about the reputation of one of their greatest war criminals?

Habeas corpus! Alive or dead, produce Arik! I mean Jesus Christ, at least when that PLO class president, Arafat, died, they made a big issue out of it.

The intolerant talk may be distasteful to some, but the First Amendment protects what people say. As Americans we have to accept and respect that aspect of public life. The First Amendment also protects religion from government interference. Newt and Palin the others need to accept and respect that too. It’s a chance to show what kind of America they have in their Heart.

Yes, ADL, and the building of Holocaust Museums in every town in America big enough to fund a JCC is counterproductive to the healing process of those Germans and other Europeans who were forced to participate in the activities of the Third Reich. And, Newt is still tormented that his slave-owning ancestors took such a grievous hit to their net worth with the Emancipation Proclamation, so we need to be considerate of him and his fellow Seccess. A Niagara of sensitivity, that ADL.
