BREAKING: Robert Byrd Was A Racist And A Democrat, No Fair

by Riley Waggaman

  • John Boehner cordially invites all lobbyists to his annual “write the GOP Agenda” slumber party/circle jerk. [Think Progress]
  • Matt Yglesias gets really philosophical about the intricacies of manufacturing goods. For instance, Matt manufactures blog posts, but will these blog posts be considered luxury goods in 40 years? We have no idea, it’s simply too soon to tell! [Matt Yglesias]
  • Barack Obama has been “divisive” and “defensive,” and this is why he is the weirdest and most unprofessional president in American history. [Weekly Standard]
  • Just thinking about how racist Robert Byrd was–and still is, in heaven–makes conservatives angry as can be, because hello? This proves that the Democratic Party and the KKK are practically boyfriend and girlfriend. [RedState]
  • Meanwhile, West Virgina Governor (and Democrat!) Joe Manchin will not appoint himself as the new Robert Byrd, maybe because he is not “KKK enough” to be a Democratic senator? [The Caucus]

Well, of course, no one could ever be the uniter, not divider, that W was. I dream of those halcyon days of civil discourse, comity among rivals, a country united behind a common cause.

Oh, wait.

Oblios Cap July 8, 2010 at 4:03 pm

More Money for Corporations, Nothing for the Taxpayers is already the GOP platform. Boner’s meeting will just be a pub crawl through DC on the lobbyists’ dime.

JMP July 8, 2010 at 4:03 pm

Wait, I though Obama was too cool and emotionless; now he’s too angry? Find a talking point and stick with it. Good thing the Standard pointed out that he’s criticized political opponents; I’m certain no president has ever done that before.

“Being a liberal means never having to say you’re sorry” – Uh, the fact the Byrd did say he was sorry; many, many times; means this is wrong. But hey, why doesn’t Human Events dig up more racist statement from 100 years ago to prove liberals are the real racists? Oh, and uh, Karl Marx is only a celebrated figure among the American left in wignuts’ imagination.

Once a KKK member, always a KKK member. Just as Teddy Kennedy was always a murderer after that accident.

Strom Thurmond; now there was a role model!

Racist concern trolls are concerned.

Byrd stuck around and changed his ways and remained a Democrat. His Dixiecrat buddies took a hike across the aisle and right into the welcoming arms of the GOP – a safe haven for racist bigots since 1964.

defensive=good at basketball.

The math, it is hard for the Weekly Standard. That moron writes that 122 million voted in 2004, 80 million in 2006, and he thinks that’s a 20% decline, which leads him to project there’ll be 30-40 million fewer voters going to the polls than the 132 million who showed up in 2008.

Then he writes people over 65 show up to vote a lot, and cites poll numbers showing that people over 50 are leaning Republican, so Dems better watch out.

I knew Repubs lie, but I didn’t think they’d lie about the numbers they actually use.

“I’ve thought about this quite a bit, you guys, and I would have to say, considering what’s waiting out there for me, I don’t want to sell anything, blog anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything blogged or processed, or blog anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, blogged, or processed, or repair anything sold, blogged, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.”

Now that you made me think about lobbyists touching my man parts I will be unable to achieve an erection for the foreseeable future. Thanks a lot, Riley.

SayItWithWookies July 8, 2010 at 4:31 pm

I love the Republican ethos, wherein Chappaquiddick and Robert Byrd’s membership in the KKK are the recent past, while Dubya’s deficit spending, lying about Iraq and coziness with industry is simply lost in the mists of time. I guess this is what you get when you hear that Adam and Eve rode dinosaurs when they fought for the South during the Civil War.

user-of-owls July 8, 2010 at 4:35 pm

The KKK, the New Black Panthers and the vatos in between. And Jesse J. calls HIS outfit a Rainbow Coalition?!

user-of-owls July 8, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Big Orange wins again.

imissopus July 8, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Meanwhile our cruel legal system continues to deprive Lindsay Lohan of her civil rights. WHERE IS THE JUSTICE FOR LILO!!1!

DemmeFatale July 8, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Riley, honey, stop going to RedState. It’ll stunt your growth.

GOPCrusher July 8, 2010 at 4:41 pm

I have to snicker whenever I see that “Obama needs a villain” meme, especially when spewed forth from a group of people that scream “SOCULIZM” or “KENYAN MUSLIM COMMUNIST” whenever they speak about President Obama.

actor212 July 8, 2010 at 4:43 pm

I’m wrapping Matt’s posts in tissue paper and hermetically sealing them with my FoodSaver so in forty years, when they are antiques and no one else has one, I can auction it on eBay for a brazilian dollars!

It’s so unfair that the GOP is labeled as the party of racists as they continue the Southern Strategy of catering to racist Southerners.

I’m betting Lincoln is probably wondering how the GOP went from fighting against slavery to fighting for it.

ella July 8, 2010 at 5:00 pm

The Red Staters are just pissed that somebody was racist before they were even born. They should look at the bright side: they’ve made up for lost time and have pretty much cornered the market for racism.

MarieDeGournay July 8, 2010 at 5:12 pm

I wonder who’s going to do whose hair and make-up at Boehner’s slumber party. Going to need orange spray by the gallon.

Eric_T_Duckman July 8, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Huh? What the hell are YOu starin’ at?

Surfeit O'Hubris July 8, 2010 at 5:18 pm

Obama needs a villain? I nominate the backward America-hating nation of Teabagistan, led by a cadre of fanatics devoted to the cult of personalty surrounding its decadent, pederastic leader, Roush aL-imbaqh

Oblios Cap July 8, 2010 at 5:19 pm

The Head Oompa-Loompa is merely showing he supports the Netherlands in the World Cup with his manly coloring. The Boner’s slumber party is a celebration of the other netherlands, if you know what I’m talking about.

And I know you do.

Jim89048 July 8, 2010 at 5:47 pm

[re=614017]SayItWithWookies[/re]: This is a real thing. I kinda part-time caretake an 88 year-old woman, and she remembers minute details about being a girl during the depression, but can’t remember what she had for dinner last night. Yet she will repeat the same thing over and over, about what she doesn’t remember eating last night for dinner.

glamourdammerung July 8, 2010 at 6:49 pm

The crying about Byrd’s racism in the early 1940s, a time when most whites supported making black folks defecating in white people’s toilets illegal, always annoyed me greatly. I guess I just did not realise how racially tolerant America was 40 years ago.

glamourdammerung July 8, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Also, I guess the same concern trolls pissed about Byrd’s racism condemned Reagan referring to “bucks” on the campaign trail.

[Obama's] “ass kicking” comments about the Gulf oil spill were weird and un-presidential.

Yes, he should be more mature and pretend to look for a fix to the oil spill under the couch.

instead of seeking bipartisan legislative consensus, he uses his party’s majority power like a steamroller.

As proven by recent achievements like single-payer health insurance, legalized gay marriage, comprehensive financial reform, two unabashedly progressive Supreme Court nominees, closing Guantanamo Bay and turning over the prisoners to civilian courts, and a huge reduction in military spending, diverting the funds instead to infrastructure, green energy, and unemployment benefits for those still having difficulties finding work.

Anyway, enough about the parallel universe the Weekly Standard inhabits, back to our own.

In 2006, however, older voters represented 19 percent of the total compared with only 12 percent for the younger bloc.

In 2006, younger people still had jobs holding their attention and weren’t as used to standing in long lines at government facilities with bored, unemployed old people.

Along with Fuck the Gays. But Not Like That. At Least Not Openly.

Naked Bunny with a Whip July 8, 2010 at 7:16 pm

he uses his party’s majority power like a steamroller.

How many of Obama’s appointees have been held up by Republicans? Also.

Naked Bunny with a Whip July 8, 2010 at 7:18 pm

@glamourdammerung: These same people are okay with Washington and Jefferson owning slaves, of course, because that’s just how things were then.

BarackMyWorld July 8, 2010 at 7:33 pm

Not all people who hate Obama are racist, but all racist people hate Obama.

imissopus July 8, 2010 at 7:59 pm

he uses his party’s majority power like a steamroller

Why, how dare he use a legislative majority to pass legislation!

Naked Bunny with a Whip July 8, 2010 at 8:02 pm

[re=614158]imissopus[/re]: A 60 – 40 majority, no less.
