Woman politician “Madam Speaker” Nancy Pelosi is doing woman things again! Like, spending too much money, dagnabbit. She’s spending $18,736 per month on a fancy suite of offices in San Francisco — liberal San Francisco, of all places — and that’s (according to Roll Call) nearly twice as much as the next-most-expensive district office rent, in Manhattan. Rents are high in these gay-filled Big Cities, it’s true. But are they too high? Can something be done to stop Nancy Pelosi?
That turns out to be part of the issue, according to Pelosi’s office. Seems that being Speaker of the House attracts a little more attention than just being a congresslady from the Bay Area — especially if you’re a woman congresslady who is Speaker of the House, because that just drives wingnuts batty. Women!
So the move to the new office was in large part due to “security concerns.” Pelosi had been in her old district offices for 20 years, and the new one has whatever you need now to keep the teabaggers and other loonies from trying to get a militia in the elevator or whatever. [Roll Call]

Can’t she just rent the stock room of a gay marijuana dispensary and be done with it? Or is that what she’s already doing?
I imagine half of that 18K is spent on armed security to keep the batshit teabagger terrorists away.
Wow. Just wow.
Alcatraz is cheap.
Aren’t there still abandoned bath houses and bum motels still in the city that she could renovate?
I’m sure our friends in the media will behave totally rationally about this, and realize these costs are reasonable considering the circumstances, and not rant and rave about it.
Oh wait, I forgot Pelosi was a Democrat for a minute there.
These Washington dicks, or twats, in this case, will never learn. The only example the seem able to set is a bad one. Eighteen Grand a month to protect somebody’s Granny…WTF?
I smell a rat. Wouldn’t all the gay keep the tea-baggers away? And hence she wouldn’t need the extra security?
Unless, the baggers have a strange attraction to SF… hmmm….
It’s security that’s driving up the price. Sad comment on our society, but living doesn’t come free if you’re a top politician.
Speaking of, why isn’t America’s Next Top Politician a TV show????
Well, it’s not like she represents the San Francisco area.
And it’s not like rent in San Francisco is really expensive everywhere.
And it’s not like there’s a chance that an unhinged wingnut will try to harm her.
So, more boob pitchers.
As long as she keeps her feet off the desk, this should be fine with the teabaggers.
[re=597949]WickedWitch[/re]: Speaking of, why isn’t America’s Next Top Politician a TV show????
Because most politicians are bottoms.
Big whoop — Teh Boehner spends that every day on spray tan.
Palomino! Palomino!
The key here is: “When Members have their offices in federal buildings, as Pelosi does, the payments are made to the General Services Administration, which is the government’s property manager.”
One part of the US government “rents” the office space to another part of the US government.
And charges a pretty penny, may I add. At $6/sq. ft./month, this is probably at least 33% over what she’d pay at 555 California St., the Transamerica Pyramid, or 101 California – and probably 50% to 75% over what she’d pay for space in any one of the dozens of downtown buildings with huge vacancies.
In the mid 90s my boyfriend shared a crappy one bedroom apartment that cost $1,800 a month in Berkeley. He had a “room” that was basically a cordoned off section of the living room.
Living in or around the Bay Area makes one immune to sticker shock. When I saw “suite of offices in San Francisco”, the $18K price tag totally made sense. This ain’t going to play well in Peoria, though, where (according to the internets)the average sale price on a home is $116K. That would buy you a Tuff Shed in the Tenderloin, maybe.
My per diem was never that good, and why wasn’t Nancy included in the “boobs” thread?
Is that supposed to be a lot? Seems like $18k per month for a suite of offices in SF would be about right. Commercial real estate costs more than residential real estate, and you’d probably pay at least $5k-$10k per month for an apartment that big.
[re=597941]ttommyunger[/re]: No, no, no. This is SanFran. They’re spending all that cash to protect somebody’s Tranny.
So, yeah, neadz moar Congresslady-boy.
Honestly, why is necessary to spend so much on a secure office for this woman? You would think that she was second in line for the most powerful position in the world or something.
[re=597952]PsycGirl[/re]: Only in the Castro district.
[re=597968]Cicada[/re]: I know, I was like “*ONLY* 18K???” Such a deal! That’s barely a year’s worth of rent for my slovenly 1 bedroom San Francisco apartment, and I live in the ghetto. On top of that, I don’t so much mind the drug addicts, kleptomaniacal neighbors, and feral cats/raccoons coming through the windows, but if I had to protect myself against tea-baggers, my security costs would go through the roof.
She needed to find an office up a flight of stairs to keep the ADAPT nuts away.
$18,736 bucks is what taxpayers shell out for one minute of the round the clock protection that war criminal Dick Cheney gets for the rest of his goddamn life.
[re=597945]Way Cool Larry[/re]: It’s San Francisco so all the extra security was put in not to keep Tea Baggers away but Code Pink.
[re=597964]Tundra Grifter[/re]: Best post in this thread.
She’s a traitor and part of the rebel alliance, take her away!
[re=598100]Hooray For Anything[/re]: I agree. All she would need to keep teabaggers out of her office is a 4th floor walk-up.
JAMES O’KEEFE SHALL HEAR ABOUT THIS!!1!
hell, for that kind of money, why doesn’t she just get a box at the phone park; then at least her staff would get to see the giants when they’re in town; and there’s all those retired security folks screening tickets and monitoring seats…they’re downright brutal at that gig. add on the garlic fries and bobble heads and i’m just sure the american public will feel they’re getting their money’s worth to take are of our bee-loved speaker.
