Vietnam hero Richard “Dick” Blumenthal, having now learned that there is such a thing as “opposition research” in U.S. Senate campaigns, organized a ragtag group of elderly Marines and apparently Dennis Hopper (?) for his press conference today in an aggressive effort to save his campaign from the liberal New York Times and its monsters.
The only really interesting part of his statement is when he says, with glee, that he managed to find the phone number for enlisting into the Marines on his own and with no help. Can you imagine how difficult it was to find a military recruiter’s phone number during THE VIETNAM WAR?
Anyway, we’re rapidly losing interest in this story. It still seems pretty clear that he hasn’t been very honest about this throughout his political career, and that’s going to offend certain people into not voting for him. But something still tells us that LINDA MCMAHON OF PRO FICTIONAL TRASH-WRESTLING IS WORSE, YOU KNOW. Then again: Connecticut Senate election voters…

Holy shit you’re a massive douchebag please just shut the fuck up.
How many VFW bar tabs did staffers have to pay to round up this rag tag team of veterans at the last minute?
Bristol Palin can get you some more honorable discharge, if you’re running low.
What a dickbag. He basically handed the election to that steel-chair wielding witch. Write in Dodd!
Is that George W. Bush on far stage right? Might be worth electing this Dick just so Kerry and McCain can share stories about killing gooks while Dick was fetching Pat Moynahan’s coffee.
Sheesh, lying douchebags. Next we’ll find out he was sexing his staffer after making an absti…oh, never mind.
Tell us the story again about how you were spit on and called names when you came back. From DC.
Never go “full war hero”

“I’ll never forget how I and my fellow soldiers struggled that night to take Minh Trinh hill — and by ‘take Minh Trinh hill’, I mean ‘get into Sans Souci Restaurant on a Friday night without a reservation.’”
Tim Johnson approves!

[re=579882]Gratuitous World[/re]: HAHAHA oh man that’s fucking brilliant.
Without having seen the NY Times story at the heart of this brouhaha, may I assume that the NY Times hates our men and women in uniform…especially those in the National Guard? Why would a newspaper go on the attack against a veteran? No, I don’t think I need to see the story now.
Could they just award the seat to Lieberman so he can have two votes to sell to the bankers and insurance companies instead of only one? Cuz he’s kind if in two parties anyway.
[re=579869]ph7[/re]: If you’re in trouble, and no one else can help, and if you can find them (at the VFW bar), maybe you can hire The “A Team.”
You gotta love Connecticut: home to bomb makers and Lieberman. And number 7 in suicides — though they’ll never catch up to DC or Massachusetts. When I think of Connecticut, I think of International Paper and MeadWestvaco, who own four of the top 20 pollution sources in my state.
“How dare you call me a liar? Look at me! I lost my eyebrows to a VC ambush involving assault barbeques with lighter fluid-filled shells. What sacrifice have you made for your country?!?”
He thought he was in Vietnam, isn’t that good enough?
George W. Bush also chose to enlist in the Texas National Air Guard along with many of his peers (the sons of John Connally, John Tower, Lloyd Bentsen, etc.). Bush was also ignored by everyone after his service. Including his commanders, base physicians, etc.
I will not let a few misplaced words…a few misplaced facts…and a couple frickin awesome lies stand in the way of destiny — my becoming the next windbag from the Nutmeg state to represent you knuckleheads.
Semper Gumby.
That is all.
You are dismissed.
[re=579909]AbeServer[/re]: A few misplaced words…”When I was serving in Vietnam….when I returned…like other Vietnam veterans…”
Yo Neidermayer, … needs more Jump Suite Crotch.
God I hate this smug cocksucker, Katherine Graham’s “personal assistant.” Serving in Vietnam doesn’t mean much, but it does mean something, and slimy bastards like this one, who want the benefit of having served without having done so, are the lowest form of human life imaginable.
Matching satin jackets are super-ghey.
It’s never too late for him to become “an hero”
Well, that at least explains one thing I’ve been morbidly transfixed by every time I looked at him: Dick Blumenthal has literally lied his face off so many times that only a paper thin, overly taut dermis of shiny scar tissue separates him from full-on They Live territory.
Hey, speaking of pro fictional trash wrestlers…
I have no problem with this. The whole country was in Vietnam. We are all Vietnam veterans, and how dare you dishonor our service.
“Unlike many of my peers, I CHOSE to join the military…”
Right on!!! He Chose!!! Not like those slackers who were drafted and spent a fucking year in fucking combat, while he collected Raggedy Ann dolls for kids in the hospital!!! He CHOSE!
We are all choosers now…
What a fucking four-star douche!!!
Come on guys, Blumenthal should be allowed to be as proud as that other great military hero Dick, Cheney, because .. o wait nevermind.
God, if I was a real Vietnam vet who actually served, I would want to kill this guy.
[re=579909]AbeServer[/re]: “Yes! Yes! I’m Dick…Dick Blumenthal. I’m your density!”
I think what everyone’s really proud of is Dick’s ability to navigate the Blue Pages of a phone book.
[re=579939]BlueStateLiberal[/re]: You are correct. That is exactly the feeling he evokes.
“We’re proud of you DIck…OOH RAAHHH!!11!”
This is excellent news for the Senator from Israel.
[re=579904]Sharkey[/re]: Yeah. If its good enough for Ronald Reagan… Oh wait.
He must have had a tough time choosing extras for this press conference: vets or aphasics?
Look, here’s the thing: you can never assume that someone is too big of a scum-sucking dirtbag for the good people of Connecticut to vote for them, anyhow, because, umm, incumbency or something. Plus, professional wrestling is just so gauche.
As a veteran of those times and also as a veteran, I believe he was a kind of gentile, lawful draft dodger — this happened right after the draft lottery and the phasing out of the college deferment. He joined the marines to avoid the draft, and even though that was in the 70′s, still was a smart choice all around for himself — but nothing to brag about or drape himself in the flag over given his lack of in-country or combat service.
Many are called, but few can find the number to call back.
“…and we’re proud of YOU, Dick” amazing what 50 bucks and a bit of coaching will get you.
New York and Jersey must be reconsidering that whole “tri-state area” thing right about now.
Of course he was in Vietnam, just as sure as Mittens Romney marched with Martin Luther King.
[re=579971]BobLeRoi[/re]: I dunno, too many of the names on that wall are older kids from my neighborhood and town. I’m sure their parents would be outraged that someone would claim combat service when he had 5 deferments and then managed to get a cushy job in DC to fulfill his obligation.
[re=579905]chascates[/re]: BTW, there’s still no one who remembers GWB being at Maxwell Air Force Base, where he supposedly was stationed, while actually helping campaign for Daddy Dear in Alabama.
The Vietnam War was an unjust war. Most Americans think it was a “mistake.” Why is it so important to claim that you participated in an unjust mistake? Henngh?
“So you were in Vietnam?”
“Yeah.”
“Were you in the shit?”
“Yeah, I was in the shit.”
Bring back Lowell Weicker
Well, have you ever heard of the Viet Cong infiltrating Toys for Tots? HAVE YOU? I rest my case.
“I was awesome at the military” is a great headline, by the way, reminiscent of Buster Bluth’s “I’m going to Army, Mother!”
“Unlike other people, I CHOSE to enlist in the Guard right before it looked like I was gonna be drafted.” The last reporter was onto that…why wasn’t that the first question?
He looks like Charlton Heston made up as the banjo player in “Deliverance.”
He wants to go to there. In the past before now. And arrive with his buddies, too! Vote honesty out!
[re=579969]mumblyjoe[/re]: Wasn’t Prescott Bush senator from Connecticut?
Let’s find out how decent liberal voters in Connecticut, USA, are feeling this evening . . . Okay, I’ll start:
Dickie the lying gasbag received a paper cut while boxing up a Toys For Tots shipment and in recognition of his heroic action and wound sustained during his Courageous Service to his country was awarded the Purple Barbie.
next up: the old swim team…
[re=579916]V572625694[/re]: Lower than Dick Cheney? Not possible.
His face reminds me of that women in the movie “Brazil” who had so many facelifts her entire face melted off. One more facelift and he’ll have to run as an Asian.
[re=580025]Aurelio[/re]: Here’s the rules: 1) If you thought it was a mistake at the time and opposed it honorably, good. 2) If you served honorably and figured out it was a mistake while there and you came back and opposed it (John Kerry, for example), good. 3) If you served honorably, figured out after it was over that it was a mistake, good. 4) If you lied about serving honorably, regardless of whether you thought it was a mistake and when, you’re claiming honorable service in a war zone when you were actually a coward. This is very, very bad.
By the way, we’re going to have this same debate in about 20 years when Iraq/Afghanistan vets try to run the country, so take careful notes, troopers.
[re=580041]23 Skidoo[/re]: And that was very funny.
Is the New York Times actually trying to get props for doing what Dan Rather got fired for?
I’m no fan of Blumenthal or the actions he’s taken, but how are they different than what our former president and vice president did with impunity their entire careers? And not only were those two asshats never taken to task, they were also inhumane to veterans throughout their administration, something no one can accuse Blumenthal of being.
Once again, Republicans and Democrats held to different standards while in “service” to their country.
I’d vote for Linda if she pledged to maintain kayfabe and insist wrestling is real and teaches pertinent lessons in all her campaign events and Senate-floor speeches.
[re=579869]ph7[/re]: Typical VFW Post Commander is more than able to stuff a room for fishy investments, “medicare supplement” scams, petition drives, political candidates and anything else that puts a few dollars into his pocket. Putting a few members on stage for that obligatory “wall of veterans” shot is very reasonably priced.
[re=579939]BlueStateLiberal[/re]: I was born in 1967 and avoided the draft due to extreme lack of age, but I still want to kick this guy repeatedly in the nutsack.
