Michael Steele Admits GOP Has Been Strategically Racist For 40+ Years, Hooray!

by Jim Newell

Aww shitPerhaps you have heard about this one! Michael Steele gave another one of his speeches. In this speech, he confirmed what all you race-baiting liberal ‘tards have been wetting your pants about since forever: minorities such as Africkans have not had much of a reason to vote for the Republican party since Pat Buchanan wrote up Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” 40-some years ago. Thanks, Michael! What’s your excuse?

Why should an African-American vote Republican?

“You really don’t have a reason to, to be honest — we haven’t done a very good job of really giving you one. True? True,” Republican National Chairman Michael Steele told 200 DePaul University students Tuesday night.

[...]

“We have lost sight of the historic, integral link between the party and African-Americans,” Steele said. “This party was co-founded by blacks, among them Frederick Douglass. The Republican Party had a hand in forming the NAACP, and yet we have mistreated that relationship. People don’t walk away from parties, Their parties walk away from them.

“For the last 40-plus years we had a ‘Southern Strategy’ that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South. Well, guess what happened in 1992, folks, ‘Bubba’ went back home to the Democratic Party and voted for Bill Clinton.”

Boy howdy! “For the last 40-plus years we had a ‘Southern Strategy’ that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South.” This is what libs/commies have been saying (because duh) all along, in response to the sunnier conventional wisdom that Nixon was sorta sketchy… but Ronald Reagan got everyone to jack off to America again! He eschewed racism for America, one might say.

Remember when Ronald Reagan ended racism forever, the first time, by… just making fun of black people all the time? Sure you do.

Why doesn’t Michael Steele?

When I hear the moomoo man talking like this, I sometimes suspect that he (and Victoria Jackson)have gone guerilla with the whole Borat thingie.

Steele/Crist 2012!

You will not be driv9ng your welfare cadillac on Mares Tranquim during the great Sino American Moon War.

Honestly, you just have to love this guy….assuming you are not a member of the GOP.

Katydid April 22, 2010 at 1:40 pm

I am so confused. Did Mikey just alienate everybody?

CATX April 22, 2010 at 1:41 pm

The GOP would sure like to go all “Southern Strategy” on Steele personally.

Extemporanus April 22, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Michael Steele: “The strapping young buck stops here.”

ManchuCandidate April 22, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Who knew that Southern White rage turned off “Not REAL” US Americans?

Red Zeppelin April 22, 2010 at 1:44 pm

The ultimate Beltway gaffe: telling the truth!

SayItWithWookies April 22, 2010 at 1:44 pm

You know a Republican’s getting desperate when he starts telling the truth. Does Michael Steele foresee a GOP rout in November? I certainly hope so.

Ruhe April 22, 2010 at 1:44 pm

Well, there you go again…reviving the old assumption that the Welfare Queen Regan told us about was a black woman. He never said she was black so why would you assume that?

memzilla April 22, 2010 at 1:45 pm

As LBJ pushed Civil Rights Acts through Congress in the late 1950s – early 1960s, he was told that this meant losing the Southern vote. Pat Buchanan and Lee Atwater embraced the moment, and that’s when the Dixiecrats turned to Republitards.

Atwater died of brain cancer, Buchanan keeps spreading it, and Steele is the product of it: Steele can be as incompetent as he wants to be, they’ll be called racists if they fire him.

G-d’s Justice: slow, but crushingly humorous.

Manos: Hands of Fate April 22, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Michael Steele wants to make sure all races are without a good reason to vote GOP.

V572625694 April 22, 2010 at 1:51 pm

[re=562203]memzilla[/re]: You’re so right. Dixietards or Republicrats, they were always just odious racists, using a veneer of “states’ rights” or “all deliberate speed” or “throw the bureaucrats in the Potomac” to hide it. And still are, in their current Teabagger (“I want my country back!) incarnation.

Bowdoin April 22, 2010 at 1:51 pm

With a nod and a wink, Raygoon kicked off his ’80 campaign in Philadelphia, MS, the very site where three civil rights workers were murdered in 1964. Then he accepted an honorary degree from Bob Jones U, then went to lay a wreath at the tomb of George Wallace, although George wasn’t technically dead yet. Morning in America, People!

Bowdoin April 22, 2010 at 1:54 pm

[re=562198]ManchuCandidate[/re]: Poppy Bush the campaign did a survey of the effect of running an ad about a black freed rapist killer where his opponent was gov. For every black alienated, two whites would be ecstatic. Willie Horton was born.

Cape Clod April 22, 2010 at 1:56 pm

[re=562203]memzilla[/re]: “Steele can be as incompetent as he wants to be, they’ll be called racists if they fire him.”

Which makes the timing of this admission somewhat suspect.

Katydid April 22, 2010 at 1:56 pm

From the Plumline comments, evidently this will be one way to spin it:

You cattle have a somewhat different definition of “Southern Strategy” than the Right does.
(This is because of the decades of indoctrination that your Masters have used to pervert your minds into the twisted and ugly little brain-tumors that they now are).

See, chilluns, you’n’s hear; “Southern Strategy” and you THINK: “Racist!”, like Pavlovian pooches.

A Rightist hears “Southern Strategy”, and he thinks:
“Conservative Values informed by the Judeo-Christian religious tradition”.

Escape Goat Nation April 22, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Drooler: It’s the DEMONCRAPS that are the Racialists!

Me: If Dems are the Racists, why do Blacks and all minorities in general overwhelmingly vote Dem?

Drooler: Because they’re stupid, lazy and want a free handout

Me: Thank you, I rest my case.

Drooler: Huh?

Formerly Preferred April 22, 2010 at 1:59 pm

[re=562226]Katydid[/re]: I’ve read that three times and I still can’t see the difference between the two last paragraphs.

PineyWoodster April 22, 2010 at 2:00 pm

[re=562226]Katydid[/re]: So they’re both correct?

Bowdoin April 22, 2010 at 2:01 pm

[re=562203]memzilla[/re]: Correction: LBJ said, “This will cost us the southern vote for twenty years.” He was too optimistic, thinking southerners would get over it in two decades.

Also, the Civil Rights Act was some sort of ploy by LBJ to withstand some sort of eastern industrial surge to the right, according to Death of a President, which also quoted Jackie to the effect that JFK had praised Mike Mansfield and predicted when the Civil Rights Act would pass, along with another signpost along the way. He was correct on both counts to the month. LBJ effectively rode one of those Frontierland longboats pulled by the cable under the keel while the kiddies played like they were moving it with their little plastic paddles. Only Vietnam was his alone; Kennedy was too smart to just keep digging his own grave.

x111e7thst April 22, 2010 at 2:02 pm

Crank Tango April 22, 2010 at 2:02 pm

coolcatdaddy April 22, 2010 at 2:03 pm

I take it Michael Steele really doesn’t want that job at the GOP.

I could tell the head of the organization I work for that everyone thinks she’s a bigoted ‘tard. It might be true, but it wouldn’t exactly be a way to get my next paycheck.

hoosiermama April 22, 2010 at 2:03 pm

I think yesterday’s headline — “Everyday’s A Going-Away Party!” has significance here.

CivicHoliday April 22, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Well gosh, I always thought the “Southern Strategy” was about appealing to the meth and taco bell demographic

imissopus April 22, 2010 at 2:06 pm

Ducksworthy April 22, 2010 at 2:08 pm

[re=562203]memzilla[/re]: As I recall, Atwater repented on his death bed. But that had no effect on his toady white spiritual heir, KKKarl.

[re=562226]Katydid[/re]: the crazeestoopid hits Sargent’s blog a lot harder than other venues; I have to say I admire the libtards who do battle with it everyday in the comments section.

BaconTime April 22, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Michael Steele is just using the United Airlines approach to crisis management. You treat someone like an animal for a prolonged period of time, and then cheerfully notify them that you DO apologize for the inconvenience and everything is OK!

McDuff April 22, 2010 at 2:13 pm

First, you think he’s a token; then you think he’s a clown; then he goes and speaks the truth about why the Republican pup tent is made out of a white sheet and you gotta think that maybe he’s a couple of working brain cells after all.

[re=562210]Manos: Hands of Fate[/re]: The GOP already had that under control before Michael Steele came along. Problem is, too many retards willing to vote against their own best interests.

Joanie April 22, 2010 at 2:29 pm

The amazing thing is that Michael Steele is right A LOT of the time. In fact, I sort of love him. What really kills me is that, if Republicans listened to Michael Steele, they might actually have a shot at, you know, getting black people and non-Rush Limbaugh listeners to actually vote for them.

But no, Republicans think Michael Steele is some sort of clown. And maybe they’re onto something. Maybe Michael Steele is like the Shakespearian jester who nobody takes seriously, but is actually speaking the truth.

On the other hand, Steele’s politics are still terrible, so I probably shouldn’t wish him too much success. But still, man, Republicans don’t know a good leader when they see one.

GOPCrusher April 22, 2010 at 2:32 pm

[re=562278]Joanie[/re]: You’re right. The problem for Republiklans is that they believe that the results of the 2006/2008 elections were a direct result of not being batshyt crazy enough.

Tea Party men! Tea Partywomen! The flag is calling you. The sacred and ancient symbol of your race, since the beginning of time. The Republicans are using The Black as muscle against you. And you are left there helpless. Well, what are you going to do about it, Whitey? Just sit there? Of course not! You are going to join with us. The members of the American, National Tea Party. An organization of decent, law abiding white folk. Just like you!

assistant/atlas April 22, 2010 at 2:42 pm

What up racism?

bitchincamaro April 22, 2010 at 2:44 pm

So please join the GOP so that we may enfranchise your black asses, so that the party may then continue to disenfranchise your black asses. Wha?

More importantly, Grand Master Steele has outed himself as a RINO by insisting on calling the Democrat Party, the “Democratic” Party. Wha?

Lud April 22, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Awww damn. I was just memorizing my Earl Butz monologue to warm up the local GOP audience.

No problem, there are plenty of other minorities to make fun of.

nappyduggs April 22, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Why does Michael Steele hate Michael Steele?

Famous Negro Republican Michael Steele escaped from obscurity by becoming Lt. Governor of Maryland. He’s described himself as being “a cow on the tracks”.

Famous Negro Republican Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery by taking a train to Maryland. Thus, he could also be described as being “a cow on the tracks”.

So, why is Michael Steele a Republican, you ask?

Herd mentality, dawg. Herd fucking mentality.

[re=562278]Joanie[/re]: Also, Steele is despised by the Republican base in spite of the fact that under his watch, the GOP has won three out of four special elections and pulled ahead in generic congressional ballot polls.

As far as minority votes go, the GOP *did* manage to hold on to the Asian vote until George W. Bush’s candidacy, but eventually blew it with them, too.

I’m thinking this has vaulted Steele out of the political realm and into the one best served by some professional media analysis from a respected pop-psychologist like Dr Phil or Dr Laura:

Dr Phil: “…this is clearly a cry for help. Mr Steele would like to stop being a Republican but he simply doesn’t know where to begin. His friends and loved ones should begin organizing an intervention. I volunteer to host it…”

S.Luggo April 22, 2010 at 5:40 pm

Steele leads a charmed life. It seems like nothing short of stealing Nancy Reagan’s wedding ring in broad daylight will get him fired.

hoosiermama April 22, 2010 at 5:45 pm

[re=562480]RobPetrified[/re]: That always amuses me when the lumpenRepublicans do that. True, the Democratic Party used to be full of segregationists, but those same people eventually bolted the Democratic Party and the GOP welcomed them in instead of telling them to get lost.
But Repubs just get real evasive when you point that out.

LowerdPeninsula April 22, 2010 at 10:53 pm

I think after this we’re going to have to start referring to him by his new official title “Former GOP Chairman” Michael Steele. In other news, during the speech, Chairman Steele could be seen holding up SOS signs reading “Help Me!” and “They’ll send me back to the Reagan Re-Education Camp, again.”
