America’s greatest new blog journalist, the Boston Globe‘s Garrett Quinn, sends this Perfect Photograph from this weekend’s Massachusetts GOP convention. How do we know that’s not Scott Brown in the middle, hiding from Sarah Palin? First, he is not naked. Second, Scott Brown’s fur is on his own skin.

From Abraham Lincoln to Ronald Regan. That pretty much sums of the de-evolution of the Republician party right there.
Scott Brown’s fur is on his own skin.
I dunno – Brown looks like the ball-waxing type. Also, I bet he bleaches his asshole.
Given the many photos of real Americans we’ve seen since Obama’s presidency began, I’m willing to bet this is the best that Elephant Suit will ever look.
Weird bloody paper on the floor!
[re=558835]Ken Layne[/re]: ewww alt-text. ok, now you have to decide who would be the engine and who would be the caboose in this Staggeringly Metaphorical Photograph.
I wish I had a giant metal claw so that I could clasp that elephant’s head and bang the shit out of it against a couple of panes of plexiglass, only to quit in frustration and try for the Spongebob Beanie Buddy.
U-S-A!
One of Reagan’s biggest fans, Daryl Gates was eulogised Saturday – I hear that his fellow Neo-Nazis came to Los Angeles to be part of Gate’s (dis)honour-guard. Nazi scum to the bitter end, that one!
The lack of public knowledge about Reagan pubic hair patterns opens up a whole new range of scholarship
Nothing says serious political discourse like cardboard, faux fur and a tutu.
Ever get the feeling that Lincoln would have scoffed at the idea of declaring a ketchup to be a vegetable had ketchup existed back then?

Workshop scheduled on basics of using Twitter
If you’re interested in using Twitter but aren’t sure how to get started, the Champaign Public Library has a workshop that can help.
A Tech Talk next week will focus on teaching Twitter to beginners. It’s scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the library’s Busey Computer Room.

[re=558842]Chernobyl Soup[/re]: ever get the idea that reagan would have scoffed at the idea of emancipation being a good idea if he had been alive in the 1860′s?
wait, was he alive in the 1860′s?
whatever, fuck that guy.
“Lincoln and Reagan: That’s About It, Folks.”
Seriously can anyone think of any other Republican President who wasn’t an abject failure?
Grant? Drunken locomotive of corruption
Harding? Eaten by a vampire.
Hoover? They don’t call ‘em Rooseveltvilles.
Eisenhower? Conveniently forgot about that whole “civil rights” thing Truman started.
Nixon? Singlehandedly responsible for the Solid Republican South and America’s permanent distrust of its elected officials. Also groady old man tits.
Bush the Greater? Up-Chucked on Asia.
Bush the Lesser? Well, goes without saying.
You might say Teddy R. is the exception, but don’t forget Beck has posthumously disowned him from the Party of Jeebus. For Soxialismz.

[re=558843]rafflesinc[/re]: You had me going until “Busey Computer Room.” Buddy Holly’s evil crazy doppleganger ain’t got no computer room.
That is so fake
Yeah ok here’s the Republican presidents after Lincoln: Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Benjamin Harrison, McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, Taft, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush 1 and 2. Several of these are among the worst presidents ever, and the rest are mediocre, except for Teddy and Ike, who along with Abe, there is no fucking way they could be elected by the teabagger repub party of today, no way no how ever. So who are they left with? Ronnie Rayguns, the actor and incipient Alzheimer’s victim who damn near drove the country off the cliff. What a brilliant fucking legacy!
[re=558834]trondant[/re]: That’s always the trouble, though – no matter how much bleach you throw on Republicans, they’re still assholes.
Why are GOP conventions always held in public bathrooms?
Cute pinafore. I wonder what it’s covering up.
Why is Lincoln wiping his cock with the Constitution?

[re=558846]Potater[/re]: Shit sorry didn’t see your comment before I wrote mine! (There was a whole eight before I logged in, how could I be bothered to read ALL of them?) But, yeah, I guess twisted minds think alike!
A furry elephant wearing a peach colored negligee?
I am speechless.
That’s one flaccid cock up there. The elephant’s nose is pretty limp too.
I looked up Eiffel Tower on UD…and I saw the definition for a “Hot Carl”. Now I am shattered for life.
[re=558861]Dashboard_Buddha[/re]: don’t look up “culverized”.
Silly GOP, that’s not a real elephant.
[re=558846]Potater[/re]: You also have to realise Lincoln was basically kicked out, which was why he did not run for reelection as a Republican.
This reminds me– I have to return “Fists of Furries” before it is overdue.

Lincoln, Teddy, and Ike would be Democrats or Greens today.

[re=558842]Chernobyl Soup[/re]: Oh, it existed – just not in a form Reagan would have recognized (think Chinese fish sauce or a thin tomato sauce – back then, the word covered just about any sauce, especially if it was salty). But Lincoln would never have called a fruit based sauce a vegetable, methinks.

[re=558890]Berkeley Bear[/re]: Just looked up the News-Gazette article. Mayor Dipshit, fanning the flames of stupid – and of course, being defended loudly by the idiots who populate the greater Champaign-Urbana region and suck up all the social services but hate that a university actually offers a liberal arts education in “their” town.
[re=558845]obfuscator[/re]: That was brilliant, funny, and sad. A perfect Wonkette trifecta!
[re=558877]hotdog[/re]: Ok being a war hero gives you a pass?? So we should ignore the fact that in spite of his heroic record, Grant was a truly ineffective and corrupt Prez–look it up. Also, I said nothing bad about Eisenhower at all, though I could have, like why did he wait until the end of his admin to make his speech about the military-industrial complex instead of when he was in office when he could have maybe done something about it, and also his inaction on civil rights, etc. So, whatever so we agree that repub prez’s have been mostly crapola?
[re=558893]serj![/re]: Also, wasn’t there a bit of a kerfuffle during much of Ike’s tenure, um, because of some Republican Congressman out of the midwest who caused some trouble, trouble that Ike could have easily prevented had he stood up to the guy….what was that guy’s name again….it’ll come to me…..McCartney…something like that.

Tutu Republican Elephant is a living symbol of the current Republican Party. Talking-points-spewing idea-less leaders of the GOP are represented by the generic, bland, cheaply made in China fur. Crazy baggers are the tutu which adds the insanity touch that transform the bland kiddie mascot into a creepy freak show. And underneath it all there’s a rich, creepy fucker controlling the show.
Note to MS GOP: Be careful with Lincoln, please!!! His carbonite casing is old and fragile. And I’m pretty sure he’d be quite pissed if you reanimate him before you clean up the GOP. There’s not much hope that he sees that day, though, as experts think the cryo chamber’s power cell, a jewel of the original SteamSkunk Works, will run out of power in 20 years or so.

How sickeningly ironic that the modern GOP wants to still pretend to be in love with Lincoln. He with his liberal policies and Executive Orders about what people can own and not own. [re=558913]RoscoePColtraine[/re]: It’s funny that after a year the GOP suddenly hates America.
When you want to secede from the US, reject all government (call it socialism and communism), spit and death threat politicians, form militias and destroy government buildings, you pretty much hate America.
But who else can they love ? The Shrubs were clearly failures. Reagan and any other repug in last century were too liberal for today’s psycho-conservative GOPers. They have to go way back when history is fuzzy and no youtubes.
[re=558919]Crank Tango[/re]: Are you a cop?
[re=558845]obfuscator[/re]: “get the idea”?! I think that was pretty much the entire assumption (fairly) of African Americans under the Reagan years. At his best, and giving him insanes amount of undeserved credit, Reagan would have likely saw slavery as a necessary evil. lol What else can be believed about a man who nearly entirely ignored that particular community, or when he couldn’t sweep its problems under the rug went on folksy, blame-the-victim attack mode all over our asses?
That said, for as incompetent and as vocally hawkish as Reagan was, even he’d find himself nervous at a modern day Tea Party. You know, in his day, there were actually still moderate Republicans in the Senate. I know; can you even imagine such a queer and fanciful a thing as a moderate Republican?

[re=558845]obfuscator[/re]: Well done Sir!
[re=558846]Potater[/re]: There are arguments for Teddy, Eisenhower, and Bush I: at least abject failure is not right. Of course modern republicans look at them and say “What, they were educated men who were insane about the Bible?” They disown them. Also Harding and Coolidge, not so bad guys, let Debs out of jail, repealed Wilson’s crazy war-time anti-speech laws, and spoke out against the KKK, mildly worked for civil rights. But it’s important to remember that between 1920 and 1970 Republicans and Democrats basically swapped all their positions and beliefs.
[re=558926]Crank Tango[/re]: Bambi’s a fucking classic..
[re=558893]serj![/re]: In defense of Eisenhower, he did give us the interstate highway system which was pretty visionary but, yeah, what you said about the military industrial complex+ Nixon. In defense of Grant, like all presidents ever he had to deal with a bunch of severe assholes in congress and the poor man just wasn’t cut out to be president, so it’s no wonder he drank. He was nowhere near as evil as the modern crop of Republicans.
To sum up, here is my list of Republican presidents who were not totally miserable failures:
1. Lincoln, even though I think it might have been smarter just to let the south go. Let us not forget that Lincoln also gave us the transcontinental railroad, the homestead act and Secretary of State Seward, who purchased Alaska from the Russkies.
2. TR. Despite being a bloodthirsty warmonger, you can’t say the man was stupid, and he was green.
3. Ike. How can you not like somebody whose name rhymes with like? Damned near physically impossible.
The tutu is one thing, but what’s up with the Yarmulke stapled to his head?
Also, re late comments on the death of American railroads and the reign of Joe McCarthy, I would like to delete Eisenhower from my above list of less than monstrous Republicans.
[re=558929]Smoke Filled Roommate[/re]: yeah I hadn’t realized that show actually was as good or even better than i’d remembered it. Who knew.
[re=558932]Crank Tango[/re]: Ha! Exactly. I just remember Viv kickin his own head around and some College Quiz shit. It was classic to me.
[re=558933]Smoke Filled Roommate[/re]: and eating the telly!
[re=558932]Crank Tango[/re]: You were talking about cones– for some reason, this always cracks me up.
[re=558935]Smoke Filled Roommate[/re]: lol from the comments:” fuckn chinks and midgets”–sounds like good times to me. Ok nite!
[re=558937]Crank Tango[/re]: yeah, youtube comments.. nighty.
[re=558930]gurukalehuru[/re]: Lincoln, even though I think it might have been smarter just to let the south go
The problem was that the South fired on federal troops at Fort Sumter which removed that option. Of course, Lincoln was not a Republican when the slaves were freed, but the GOP “ignores” that.
TR. Despite being a bloodthirsty warmonger, you can’t say the man was stupid, and he was green.
Teddy intervened in the war between Russia and Japan as a neutral third party and ended the war. Considering he was really the first one to intervene as an observer to end a war is a success in my book.

He created the original Night Of The Living Dead by releasing through defunding mental health facilities.

I vehemently, albeit respectfully, disagree. Reagan was an opportunistic motherfucker in every respect possible, and he would have gleefully glommed onto the Teabaggers once he smelled the way the nauseating winds were blowing. Let us never forget his “states’ rights speech” several miles from Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1980. It wasn’t just a racist and incredibly insensitive move; it was a calculated, opportunistic and exploitative masterpiece, and it showed exactly what kind of a cocksucker he was. I could go on and on and on about Reagan, were there world enough and time.
Yes, there used to be moderate Republicans, but Reagan wasn’t one of ‘em, and there still are moderate Republicans, they’re just keeping their mouths shut until – if – it’s safe to open ‘em again.

[re=558958]Katydid[/re]: And you know what Teabaggers/GOP/Reagan worshippers remember about that speech? That it was near the site of the Freedom Riders’ deaths. That’s it!
And yes, I know all about the Central Illinois “got mine” mentality. Everyone in Springfield is pretty much dependent on state government and tax revenue, but they vehemently oppose tax increases. Of course, I just read the classic letter to the editor where the person on SS and Medicare says all she’s doing is taking back her money and accuses everyone else of “not understanding the system”. I just hadn’t realized the mayor of a city that lives and dies by Federal funding of the University and state funding of everything elese was stupid enough to go public with birther talk. Obama acts like he’s above this stuff, but Dick Durbin doesn’t play around. And while Ray LaHood is a Republican, he’s also a)not completely batshit crazy and b) loyal to the administration, so I hope they weren’t counting on massive highway funds.
[re=558975]sati demise[/re]: And simply ignore explicit laws designed to curtail supporting nasty little fascist rebels. Of course, the lesson the GOP learned from that was that any Democratically controlled Congress is a bunch of weaklings and you should never listen to them – unless they let you kill brown people.

And if that racist cocksucker (lightly salted rat dicks, of course) of a mascot Illiwinik gets anywhere near me, I’m gonna show him what a bear does in the woods. Being trapped in the closet will be the least of his concerns. Oski don’t play that.
Nobody apart from Serj has mentioned Gerald Ford. True, he pardoned Nixon, but compared to Nixon, he was a pinnacle of rectitude. True, he was never actually elected, but he did lose an election to Jimmy Carter (which may not have been that easy). True he was only in office for two years, but during those two years, he didn’t cause any real irreparable harm. He even granted conditional amnesty to the draft dodgers from Vietnam and didn’t fuck up the American exit from Vietnam. Also, with or without Chevy Chase, he was unintentionally hilarious!
Conclusion: best Republican president since Lincoln: Ford. Now we must wait for President Mercury and the trifecta will be complete.
[re=558976]Berkeley Bear[/re]: Ach! Mein Gott im Himmel! I hadn’t read about that asswipe. My aforementioned ex-family lives about 30 minutes from Springfield, and lurves to celebrate Lincoln, funnily enough. Thank Gott I’m not related to those mothers anymore, although I am sorry I

[re=558984]Katydid[/re]: Everyone worships the myth of Lincoln around here. Never mind that this is also the town that nearly destroyed itself with race riots a hundred years ago and led directly to the founding of the NAACP (they did mention that last year, but not nearly as much as they honored every outhouse Lincoln might have taken a dump in for his 150th birthday). This is the closest to a segregated southern city I’ve ever lived in – there are a number of places where you’d hear a pin drop if a brownish person walked in to do anything but work in the kitchen. But we all loves us some Lincoln (and especially the Gettysburg address – the EP and Second Inaugural, not so much).
Strange bedfellows from the Star Wars cantina.

The Land of Lincoln certainly does have its racist past/present. When I lived there (btw we were trying to retire/bury Illiniwek 40 years ago) the city of Pekin, just south of Peoria (the Nixonian “will it sell” Mecca), had a law on the books that if you were black you couldn’t be in town after the sun set. They suffered (?) having the state-level high school debate tournament moved from Pekin, because some of the teams would have trouble with that legal restriction during evening rounds. What finally got their attention was when the state high school athletic association was going to ban Pekins’ football & basketball teams, the “Chinks” back then, from state-level competition. Pekin finally blinked, and pulled the law from their books. BTW, Pekin High mascot has been the Dragons since 1978.
Have you been to Cairo yet? Charming spot that. Did some campaigning for McGovern down there in 1972 as a Vietnam vet for McG. My Vet status is likely why I didn’t have to have buckshot pulled from my butt.
So … when are the Republicans going to produce a “Banana Splits”-style television series with furries running around in circles teaching children about the wonders of capitalism, free markets, endless war, and heterosexual sex?
Reagan looks like he just got done wiping his a$$ on a few thousand dollar stocks in limo one in front of the Russian Embassy.
And in between Reagan and Lincoln stands the current incarnation of the Republican Party, representing its diseased and rotted-out soul, our maganificent Cthulu, with his excess tentacles modestly hidden beneath the folds of a peach cocktail dress.
My thought would be…where does yer really, outrageous, TPer go; if they don’t slate a candidate of their very own or run someone really different in a Republican primary…they’ll vote GOP in 2010.
It’s rather like the far left, in the Democrat Party…if their gurrl or guye doesn’t win in the primary…where they gonna go…?
They sure as hell ain’t gonnah vote for the GOP or the TPer’s, candidate…maybe stay home…?
If the TPer’s can keep their level of commitment and rabid, enthusiasm intact for another six months, until November, that’s gonna be a problem for the Democrats…!
[re=558995]Gramps[/re]: Another plausible outcome: given the way in which the GOP is beginning to distance itself from the wingnut gang, and given that Michael Steele is *still* running the RNC, there remains a likelihood of wingnut third-party challengers (Mary Starrett, I can see your thong.) This may or may not divide the right. I do hope it does.

Man weejee,/em> was that a questionable, endeavor… when Illiniwek used to run in full head dress, deerskin and pumping that copper, tipped, spear around Camp Randall at Madison; that used to place the fear of God in us lowly, ground huggin’ Badger’s, hearts and souls…!
Have yah evah, won a game there since…?
[re=558995]Gramps[/re]: I’ve heard hope expressed that in the GOP primary the pick the very wingnuttiest of wingnuts. Out here in the real Warshington, that was successful for the Dems some years back when the GOP faithful (and we do mean faithful) picked two brides of Jeebus for their gubernatorial candidates (Linda Smith twice & Ellen Craswell once). They got buried. That can backfire, and the thought of 20 more Michelle Bachmans is scary, no?
[re=558997]Gramps[/re]: My freshman year, we had a guy by the name of Butkus playing linebacker and center. Good trivia question is who is the last player to play in every play of a Rosebowl game. Dick da bruiser.

At this point in time, six months prior to mid-term elections; there is no counter force that challenges the Tea Party, true believers, from the left.
I am well aware that, six months is an eternity in politics; nevertheless, considerations must and should be made…!
Hope only, is not an alternative…!
The Lincoln thing is killing me because on the one hand, they’re all “yay, Lincoln! He freed the slaves and kept us united!” and then the next minute they’re all “yay Johnny Reb for fighting to keep the slaves and secede from the union!” It’s like saying you’re a Yankees fan while wearing a Red Sox hat.
[re=558930]gurukalehuru[/re]: Eisenhower was a fairly decent President and is seen more and more as one of the better President’s by historians. Naturally, he’s pretty much ignored by the Republicans and never discussed. When was the last time you heard a Republican actually talk about him let alone have a picture of him standing next to a furry?
[re=558982]Berkeley Bear[/re]: if brady and kirk can’t win in the current environment, state republicans will be waaaaay out in the wilderness for a long time. if i were an illinois republican, i’d be pretty pissed over how worthless my party is.
brady’s a fucking nutjob approaching oberweis levels of insanity.
[re=558991]weejee[/re]: Great, so now I get to add another reprehensible term to my vocabulary, Sundown Towns. I must confess ignorance of such a hideous thing; I wish I didn’t know about it still. Although I put the link to a book called Sundown Towns, don’t anybody click on it; it’s too disgusting and depressing.
Idiot that I am, I couldn’t believe that there were actually laws on the books that late and the town refused to change it. The book I linked to claims there are still such towns, and comes down pretty hard on, you guessed it, Illinois. Excuse me while I throw up.
The Wikipedia entry on Pekin says people petitioned to get the high school to change the teams’ name in the mid-70s, but the student body refused.
Where did I put that strychnine? Unfortunately, it’s for me. I can’t stand this shit.

decatur’s pretty segregated and it doesn’t have the economic boost that state government provides, so it’s extra ewwww. lots of manufacturing jobs have disappeared during the past 20 or so years.
[re=558896]Katydid[/re]: [re=558986]Berkeley Bear[/re]: You don’t have to go as far south as Springfield to encounter that attitude. My hobo-hating relatives are from Kankakee. The family matriarch constantly bitches about other people getting social services, while for 30 years she’s been enjoying Social Security and Medicare (the program that provides her with the daily appointments, testing, “procedures,” and drugs that are her version of entertainment). And when I point out that SHE didn’t “pay into” anything, as she’s never worked a SINGLE DAY in her very long life, I’m the bad guy. But I guess she deserves to be on the dole-she-refuses-to-see-as-a-dole just because she’s white and managed to snag a Republican husband. Sorry for the rant, but I get a little testy on this subject as I pay TOTALLY full-fare cash money for my healthcare, while I watch her spend about $100,000 A YEAR of Medicare dollars for mostly imaginary issues.
[re=558906]Servo[/re]: Thanks for mentioning why I DON’T Like Ike. When I came back from my first trip to Europe I was asking, “Why don’t we have train service like that?” One of my older relatives politely explained it to the dumb kid.

[re=559003]Katydid[/re]:
Just as an aside, I attended high school in a sundown town in southeastern Kansas. There were only two persons of color on the roll at that time, myself being one of them. The most ironic thing about that place (and I would assume all of the others with such laws on the books) was that there was ostensibly no good reason to have been there when the fucking sun was up, much less down. Not a whole helluva lot of theatre or nightlife, ya know? They flattered themselves to no end thinking that they had the only trailers worth burgling or cows worth tipping.
[re=559015]chascates[/re]: Yep. If you give the Republicans Lincoln(which is dicey) and Reagan, the Democrats can counter with a murder’s row of FDR, Truman, JFK, and LBJ. Carter wasn’t so hot (though some of it wasn’t his fault) but he is the only President to get a Peace Treaty in the Middle East. Clinton probably won’t go down as a “great” President but we had peace & prosperity under him. The Republicans have two Presidents in a 150 year span that they’re proud about. They’ve disowned TR, pretend like Ike and HW Bush never happened, and have amnesia about major swaths of W’s Presidency. The only reason why they still kind of like him was because he blew people up and then tortured them.
Not a great track record to show people why a Republican President would be awesome. “Hey, vote for us! One day we’ll have another good President!”
The photo is incontrovertible proof that Peter, Paul & Mary did not age well.
[re=559039]nappyduggs[/re]: From the description of the towns in that book review I linked to, that sounds about right. While I generally think of myself as cynical as hell, I can also be startlingly naive at times, and the longer I live the more I am amazed to learn the different ways people think up to torment each other, usually for no fucking reason, like this crap. So much of it is just an adult version of, “Yeah, well, I may be shit, but you’re even worse shit, so there.” Gawd.
Is that “elephant” Cthulhu in drag? GOP = Giant Octopus Party.
[re=558991]weejee[/re]: Cairo is charming the same way that Grozny is.
I’ve always had the hardest time trying to qualify Midwest racism in comparison to its Southern variety. Racism up here seems to physically destroy the places it spreads to; Cairo is a perfect example, though just about every small town and city in that area has been decimated by changing economy. I’ve been able to chalk this up to the fact that minority populations are much more concentrated than they are in the South, so you can easily run out of the cities and build your own commmunities on the outskirts. In the South, running out of the cities often lands you in rural minority-majority areas, so it kind of defeats the purpose of a racist.
“***Just say what yeh, really feel…nappyduggs…”They flattered themselves to no end thinking that they had the only trailers worth burgling or cows worth tipping.***”
nd…you and I cudda been players…
I know, I know…I never saw a black kid in northern Wisconsin, when I was growin’ up, in either grade or high school in Crivitz, WI in 1958…
Then when I attended the UW of Wisconsin in Madison in 1959…when he [the black guy] was assigned to me, as my roommate in Kronsage Hall, Room 102…There were no black kids or folks in Crivitz, WI in 1958…that was really exceptional.
He [the black guy]was a true scholar, his father was a doctor in Evanston…he was an exemplary influence on me…!
This was all, very different…I, personally had no prejudice’s toward any race or religious beliefs except for the darn, Polish, Catholic’s, that surrounded and harassed, me in grade and high school and preferred to call me “a sinner” as a Wisconsin Synod Lutheran, student, condemned to “hell fire” because I wasn’t Catholic…!
In high school my brother and I put up with all the“Pollocks” [ethnic slur] that surrounded us…then, when I was a sophomore, my brother, Peter and I decide to buy a barbell set, of 250 pound weights and a bar from “York Barbell Co., York, Pennsylvania”…shipped in FOB by our local freight train, at the Crivitz, depot…!
We started lifting weights then…this was in the early spring of May,1956…our coach’s in high school didn’t have any weight lifting programs at that time…we lifted, heavy, for three months…
I was seventeen he was sixteen…we started to see muscular growth in our arms from doing heavy, curls and bulk in our thighs from doing deep knee bends…!
Hey, as a skinny arse, junior in high school, suddenly, I had 15 inch biceps…
As a junior in high school I went from a six foot two… 140 pound weakling to a 190 pound “all conference” football player over just one summer…three months…!
When I came back to school in the fall of 1957 I was kickin’ arse and takin’ names…not really…it was very cool… to have the respect of all the arseholes that had harassed me and the coaches that wanted you too play…!
Having been through the earlier “being bullied scenario” I became a defender of one geeky guy and at least two “chunky” girls that were being harassed by their peers…no one yucked with me…or my brother, again…!
Viva la, weight training…
Kick arse…
Hang however yeh want…nappyduggs…I really like the cut of “yer jib”…
Olde dumbe arse sailor talk…!
[re=558939]glamourdammerung[/re]: Letting a foreign power control the mouth of the Mississippi would have hindered commerce no end, even with railroads. Probably the rump USA and the CSA would have split up further, ending up like Latin America or the present day Middle East, poor and weak, open to all kinds of foreign manipulation and control. The southern states were economic dependencies of the UK even before the Civil War.

[re=559071]zhubajie[/re]: I realise that, but I still think that the whole C.S.A. starting active hostilities meant that fighting was going to be the only option pursued. It was not like the U.S. was going to get attacked and then decide to just shrug it off.
