CUT MAH TAXIS  4:28 pm April 14, 2010

by Jim Newell

They are preparing!JUST A REMINDER FOR THE TAX DAY TEA PARTIERS! Let’s drag out the olllllll’ “meaningful fact” argument again: “Recent polling shows that most people believe President Obama has either left taxes the same for this past year or actually raised them. The truth could not be more different. The President cut taxes for 98 percent of working people in 2009. Read our fact sheet for details. You can also click on your state below to see how working families in your state benefit from the tax cuts signed into law by President Obama.” [Citizens For Tax Justice]

He should raise the tax on tea.

JMP April 14, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Some people say Obama cut taxes for most Americans, other that he raised them; this is a reasoned debate between two equal, different points of view.

DickTaterPeeNoShay April 14, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Obviously they’re polling the 2% of working people for whom taxes didn’t go down, duh.

TGY April 14, 2010 at 4:38 pm

He should raise the tax on stupidity.

Gregoire April 14, 2010 at 4:42 pm

He should install an misspelling tax.

problemwithcaring April 14, 2010 at 4:42 pm

So, 98% of Americans are getting something for nothing!?

PlanetWingnuta April 14, 2010 at 4:43 pm

he should raise the tax on people making spelling errors on signs and give that money to the dept of education. (oh yeah and stuff about facism, communism etc) also to be included of money going back to education (and country back signs too) cause we know they need civics lessons.

SayItWithWookies April 14, 2010 at 4:44 pm

I don’t care what the facts are! Obama’s killing us with these new taxes!

Fox n Fiends April 14, 2010 at 4:46 pm

tax cuts benefitting working people? THAT’S SOCIALIST

Monsieur Grumpe April 14, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Facts are to Teabaggers as rational thought is to Palin.

sezme April 14, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Facts are simple and facts are straight.
Facts are lazy and facts are late.
Facts all come with points of view.
Facts don’t do what I want them to.
Facts just twist the truth around.
Facts are living turned inside out.
Facts are getting the best of them.

DangerousLiberal April 14, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Jesus, you and your facts again. What, you want this site to resemble reasoned discourse or something? Looos-ers.

mustardman April 14, 2010 at 4:49 pm

The 2% being rich folk and Boehner because of the tanning salon tax.

Smoke Filled Roommate April 14, 2010 at 4:49 pm

What about a sore loser tax?

bago April 14, 2010 at 4:51 pm

Check it out. Freepers are warblogging the crashtheteaparty forum.

Of course they don’t have any imagination and are just posting the same thread titles over and over again. It would be quite meta to warblog the warbloggers, who are warblogging the warbaggers.

Just sayin.

Potater April 14, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Teabaggers experimented with a fact, once, back in their ca~razy high school days. But just the tip went in. It’s not gay if it’s just the tip, right?

SayItWithWookies April 14, 2010 at 4:53 pm

President Obama should be more like Republicans and lower taxes. For instance, Governor Bob McDonnell of Virginia just signed legislation saving the Commonwealth some $49,000 a year it used to spend on a system that allowed Virginians to file their taxes electronically for free. Now they’ll be forced have the opportunity to use an outside vendor who’ll charge them for it.

So aside from the fact that Virginia will probably still have to pay the money for the filing program (how else are the third-party vendors going to file your taxes electronically?) and except for the bit where citizens pay extra for something they used to get for free, and except for the extra layer of bureaucracy added to the process (but it’s private enterprise bureaucracy, which doesn’t count), this completely embodies the Republican principle of leaner, meaner, more efficient government.

Hooray For Anything April 14, 2010 at 4:54 pm

To be fair, the tax cuts were designed to not be so noticeable as to make people think they just magically made more money and would therefore spend it instead of using it for savings. Which means they might have gotten a little too clever on this one as it’s hard to be given credit for a tax cut if nobody realizes that you got your taxes cut. Of course, you could have also picked up a paper or watched something that wasn’t FOX to read about it but let’s not go crazy here.

Anyways, chalk it up as another instance where half the staff in the White House are banging their heads against the table wondering what the point of anything is.

I suspect, although have no proof, that most people fill out their tax forms, or pay H & R Block (or similar company) without having a clue as to what the numbers mean or what their true tax bill is. Just like I just heard on cnn a Rick Sanchez discussion about illegal immigrants, and the anti-immigrant person insisted that illegals don’t pay taxes, and Rick called her on that (you know – sales tax and stuff). I think most amercun idjits really just object to having the bother of filling out the forms and mail (or email) them in by a certain date more than object to their actual tax bill.

On the other hand, one of my stepsons never gets how to figure out the earned-income tax credit that he, unfortunately and/or fortunately, is entitled to most years. I have to wonder how many others don’t get the credits and/or deductions they are entitled to. Or simply don’t get “it”.

This year there is this nice “making work pay” payback. I hope you are all checking that out.

Extemporanus April 14, 2010 at 5:00 pm

[re=556405]Gregoire[/re]: That would make the tax rate on your last comment 16.7%.

Troubledog April 14, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Great last paragraph:

“The Recovery Act also included several tax breaks for business. There are serious reasons to
doubt that business breaks can help the economy. Business owners tend to not expand
operations (i.e., hire more workers) in response to a tax cut. They expand operations because
there is demand for whatever product or service they are selling. This is why putting benefits
in the hands of low-income and middle-income people is a more effective way to create jobs.”

If you put cash money in the hands of poor people, they will spend it on goods and services. This directly supports business growth. If you put cash money in the hands of rich people, they will keep it in the bank. That’s how they got rich. Duh.

Why does nobody get this? Frickin Teabaggers.

I’m tired of all these “Fact Cats” and “Bureaufacts” and “Demofacts” telling us how to run our lives.

Socalism! Comunism! Muslin Terist! I can hear the IRS agents multiplying. Because the walls of my condo are very thin.

Factism….are we there yet?

Buzz Feedback April 14, 2010 at 5:22 pm

There was a big tax cut right before the Holocaust.

Starrigavan April 14, 2010 at 5:23 pm

Heck, the IRS found a tax credit I didn’t claim and is giving me $400 more than I thought I was getting. I think it was the “Voted for Obama” credit, but I’m not sure…

Marxist-Leninist Papist April 14, 2010 at 5:25 pm

The strategy is simple: Clearly, Obama needs to make some serious love to the long dead traitors of the Confederate States of America to win the Teabaggers to his evil socialist tax cuts. That would have the added benefit of making their brain explode from sheer mental dissonance, so major win !

/Snark off
When we engage in discourse on the subject of lowering taxes without making mention of the things we tacitly agree (ostensibly, in the voting booth) to buy with them, i.e., wars, social programs, education, infrastructure, etc., aren’t we missing the whole point? Aren’t we just ignoring the fact that if we want to continue paying for these astoundingly and increasingly expensive things, that we will all have to eventually pay more taxes, not less? Why do we continue to play the same stupid game with each other?

Marxist-Leninist Papist April 14, 2010 at 5:39 pm

[re=556487]bitchincamaro[/re]: I agree with you that eventually society must and will pay (for it is able to pay) higher taxes, in particular, hopefully, the capitalist bastards in the top one percent. Hopefully, this will be buoyed up by constructive government investment in infrastructure and productivity (as well as a complete revolution of society, but thats another matter).Obama is playing the same stupid game with the right that Democrats have almost always done since the 70′s, which is to say that he plays by the rules they set to the political policymaking and discourse of this country.

We’ll see how people like ‘limited government’ when they get tainted food products, unsafe consumer appliances, neighborhood hazardous waste sites, even more predatory financial institutions, and the like all because of no federal oversight.

Poopley J. Crandleberry April 14, 2010 at 6:28 pm

GOD People are such MORANS!

red sky April 14, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Considering the 47% number is bogus, we also relly need to realize the 98% has to be equally bogus bc if you are not paying any federal income tax , which clearly some people are not, you also not really getting a tax cut either.

Chuckie Jesus April 14, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Chuckie Jesus and her husband only had to pay $100-something as opposed to nearly a K because of the Make Work Pay credit. Which is pretty cool, because we went up a tax bracket (yay marriage!) just in time for Mr. Jesus to lose his job, which would have disqualified him. That little tax break made it possible for us to catch up (a little) on rent, and maybe even buy some clothes without holes in them! God Bless Amurka.

Berkeley Bear April 14, 2010 at 8:56 pm

[re=556615]red sky[/re]: Actually, the trouble is in the nomenclature. 47 percent don’t pay income tax, mainly really poor folks, seniors living off SS/IRAs/pensions and people whose income is shielded from taxes by various strategies. However, everyone who works pays payroll taxes. The 98 percent reduction is on “people who work”. To make sure the cut reached as many people as possible in an effective and stimulatory way (see [re=556428]Hooray For Anything[/re]‘s comment above) they did it by reducing payroll withholding, rather than a refundable credit or a one time check like Bush did.

Sorry for the reality, but after listening to clips of Palin claim we are being burdened by taxes when people worked something like a week less for their taxes this year than last, and two weeks less than the peak Bush years, I’m snark impaired.

red sky April 15, 2010 at 9:18 am

[re=556674]Berkeley Bear[/re]: We’re basically on the same page here, I was just pointing out how easy it is to deceive with statistics if you don’t include all proper modifiers. Even if you use “people who work”, it may not apply to self employed/private contractors that aren’t paying pay roll taxes or having them paid for them (assuming they’re reporting accurately to begin with), and assuming they have enough other deduction or low enough income to not paid any Federal (obviously not a desirable position). But yes, the 47% number is basically a vicious lie designed to obfuscate the issue, but you have to admit Obama didn’t cut taxes for 98% of Americans.
