Hmm what’s a good, sane way to show opposition to a popularly elected government’s effort to make health insurance available to some people currently ineligible because they’ve lost their jobs or have a pre-existing medical condition? How about an armed state militia to fight the Feds! That’s the plan in Oklahoma, where Republican politicians and state legislators are plotting with teabagger militants to raise up a revolutionary army against, uh, health care reform.
Frustrated by recent political setbacks, tea party leaders and some conservative members of the Oklahoma Legislature say they would like to create a new volunteer militia to help defend against what they believe are improper federal infringements on state sovereignty.
Tea party movement leaders say they’ve discussed the idea with several supportive lawmakers and hope to get legislation next year to recognize a new volunteer force. They say the unit would not resemble militia groups that have been raided for allegedly plotting attacks on law enforcement officers.
Ho ho, good! Wouldn’t want to encourage any wingnut Oklahoma psychopaths to … uh, what do the Oklahoma militia nuts do? We forgot. Probably nobody remembers in Oklahoma too, because gosh, it’s hard to remember last week, let alone the 1990s.

What a plan! The Oklahoma State gooberment registers all the tea baggers into the new militia, recording their names, addresses, and weapon of choice. The militia shoots up the local ATF office to stop the Feds from “tak’n ‘r guns.” The Black Helicopter Squad raids the State house, takes the militia muster roll, rounds up the entire militia in a 24-hour arrest-frenzy, and ships them all off to FEMA internment camps in Area 51. Empty homes in Oklahoma are offered to Obama supporters from the bluest States, and Dustbowlblues is appointed Governor. What’s not to like?

If you get the chance read deeper on this, particularly the statements of the state representatives that think this is a really great idea. The National Guard of the state is horrified and had some very interesting statements as well. During the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing this is just so fucked up and stupid I can’t think of anything funny to say. I worked in OKC a lot and was almost in downtown OKC on that day, and to think that anyone in the entire state would think forming an anti-government militia is a good idea is so sick that they should be taken out of office, tarred and feather, and whipped out of town with an ear of corn as high as an elephant’s eye.
This second amendment justification merely codifies the teaparty’s current circular firing squad mentality.

Someday some poor schlub will be working for the princely sum of thirty-six grand a year so that you can have SSN and Medicare as well. But I’d love to see your source on that assertion about Pelosi giving Social Security to undocumented illegals. I’m willing to bet the vast majority of undocumented workers get paid under the table, in cash. And seriously underpaid at that. Why would an employer bother withholding Social Security taxes from someone’s paycheck and reporting it to the government when he can just pay some illegal a dollar an hour to pick fruit and keep all the rest of the money for himself?
What Pelosi or some other rational human being might have proposed is some sort of immigration reform that would put currently undocumented workers on a path to citizenship so they can have those regressive payroll taxes withheld from every tiny paycheck like the rest of us. Which wouldn’t be a bad thing for Social Security. You see, that is a pay-as-you-go system. The tax you pay today goes out tomorrow to some senior citizen or disabled person who is not physically able to work. So the formerly undocumented worker would be contributing to society today, just as you are, assuming you have a job and you’re not some bitter redneck who spends all day shooting empty Pabst cans off the top of a rotting fence. Tomorrow when it’s his turn to get too old to work overnight cleaning toilets in office buildings or your turn to get too old to manage the third shift at Arby’s or whatever you do, some younger person’s SS taxes will be there to help him and you out. In theory. Unless you’ve made so much fucking money that you don’t need Social Security, not that that will stop you from screaming at the government “It’s mine! Gimme gimme gimme!”
