After watching 15 minutes of this, it’s an hour long example of Beck’s favorite, “Now I’m not saying” technique. It goes something like this,

Now in this particular example, Beck isn’t saying that Obama is Hitler, Stalin or Mao, he’s just saying we need to fear for our lives that Obama’s policies are the same as Hitler’s, Stalin’s or Mao’s.

Most of the people who criticize Beck never or rarely ever watch his show. Sure he is wrong sometimes, but usually not. He’s usually pretty spot on. The only valid criticism I can see is the overly dramatic tears he used to shed on TV. Hes pretty much stopped doing that.
In regards to the documentary, I thought it was pretty good. It wasn’t all that shocking to me since I knew about most of what he talked about. The one thing he forgot to mention was the supposed ideological cannabalism that occurred during the cultural revolution. Pretty sick stuff.

That being said, my guess is that the problem with lil’ Glenny Beck’s lil’ TV program would not necessarily be with certain facts (Stalin killing millions of his own people and so on,) but with the ridiculous intellectual contortions he’ll use to link Che and Mao and ol’ Josef to the Obama administration. As if pushing an elected legislature to enact laws requiring corporations to provide health insurance for all citizens is the beginning of a slippery slope that leads to dictators sending anyone who disagrees with them to gulags in Siberia.

Well I just watched the whole thing and wasn’t it cute. Its intellectual rigor is up there with those documentaries when I was in high school about how heavy metal music caused violent and suicidal behavior, encouraged drug use, and indoctrinated children into satanism. Thence originate my first pangs of loathing for Tipper Gore and that know-nothing paranoia that substitutes for morality among the Pharisees.
Essentially Beck’s points are that Hitler and Stalin had a lot in common. He then throws some sentences in from Marx to assert that all three have a lot in common. Then Che Guevara, fashion icon, was a killer. Whatever that does, that blows something wide open. I have no idea what, however.
Oh and in there somewhere he has this completely gratuitous attack on George Bernard Fucking Shaw, of all people, where he shows film of Shaw saying that many people ought to be killed and here’s how. That’s Shaw the satirist, Glenn. Shaw was a Fabian, who were the biggest bunch of hippie pacifist sissies imaginable. Shaw was a famous champion of the lower classes and many groups considered second-class citizens. He pilloried the obtuse social darwinists and industrialists of his day by expressing their thoughts with the shocking bluntness that Glenn Beck is now taking as a literal expression of Shaw’s thinking. It would be irony if it weren’t stupidity much much more so.
So Glenn — your powerful screed was pathetic and ridiculous. Also, I don’t know of anyone, right or left, who doesn’t look at a portrait of Che or Mao or anyone, for that matter, without a complex series of reactions about the person, their various representations and implications, their flaws, triumphs and losses and their meanings, both straightforward and ironic, in their iconography. Your viewers are not so shallow that they have a two-dimensional view of the world. Although if you keep condescending to them, their percentage of your demographic will grow.

Beck, in teasing the documentary Thursday, claimed that “progressives” don’t want the public to know about this history and that it’s “not being taught in classrooms in America.”
Not everyone who watched his history lesson was convinced - especially some professional historians.
Clemson University professor Steven Marks, and author of “How Russia Shaped the Modern World,” said that while Beck doesn’t explicitly tie the leftwing totalitarian regimes of the past to contemporary liberals, that’s what “he hinting at here.”
“No one in their right mind is going to defend Stalin or Mao or Che Guevara,” Marks said. “The implication is that this is what’s going to happen if Democrats get their way. This is just a complete lie.”
Alan Wolfe, director of the Boisi Center for Religion and American Life at Boston College, said that the film not only isn’t accurate, but that Beck “lives in a complete alternative universe.”
As an example, he said, Beck mentions how the Nazis supported programs like universal health care as evidence that their ideology may have more to do with the left than the totalitarian right.
Nazi Germany was “not evil because of their economic program,” said Wolfe, which he noted included a few programs designed to promote public health.
“It was evil,” he said, “ because it aimed at the extermination of European Jewry.”

Dicentra…about you asking about Germany and Russia being on the same side in WWII…that, is basically correct for it is a *fact* of history. Being complicit in actions is the same as being a part of it. Yes, Russia helped defeat Germany, but not until after Germany reneged on the agreements they signed with Russia, where Russia supported Germany in exchange for pieces of Poland, among other things. The one thing that this documentary did not lack was solid research.

I found out about what actually happened because the movie “We Were Soldiers” came out, and people were talking about the history surrounding the start of American involvement in Vietnam. The US got involved because the French had their asses (well what was left of their asses) handed to them by the Vietnamese, and due to treaties that existed at the time, the US got involved. That’s it…and now you know, the rest of the story. You may want to research the rest of what you mentioned to make sure there were no other background incidents involved, blown up by conspiracy theorists.

armylngst: army…you obviously haven’t studied much about WWII…maybe they didn’t teach it at Regent. Russia and Germany had what can be considered a conditional alliance with timed provisions, their agreement only existed visa vie Poland. Stalin signed the agreement because he felt that as much as he opposed Naziism (because it was hard rightwing philosophically and in method) that the Russian’s couldn’t win a war with Germany at that point in time. The whole point of the alliance was to conquer Poland, which was long-held by Imperial Russia and by time for Russia to build it’s eastern defenses (which is why the Red Army didn’t go any further westward until after Germany invaded). Even the invasion of Poland was done to buy Russia time and real estate to fight the Germans.
Hitler had no intention of engaging in any sort of long period alliance with Russia, in fact when he launched operation Barbarossa he declared it was as if his soul had been cleansed of the filth of allying with Communists. So don’t try and pretend they were friends. At the very least if you knew anything about European history during the early-mid 20th century you could call it a contentious alliance of convenience, sort of like how the US and GB allied with Russia (by the way, I don’t ever hear the American military being equated to communists like the Red Army by wingnuts, even though they shook hands and celebrated at the fall of Berlin). My advice to you is, read some history, maybe get a little educated by something other than rightwing, deceptive and abridged history before you begin calling down others lack of knowledge; your simplistic view is rather galling.

Good lord, all Glenn Beck has to do is go back and look at German history between the end of WWI (Nov 11, 1918) and Hitler being sworn in as Chancellor (Jan 30, 1933) to learn that there’s a REALLY HUGE FREAKING DIFFERENCE between Socialists and Communists. The Social Democrats (a.k.a. Socialists) were the only ones fighting for true democracy! The Communists wanted Germany to be the next USSR, and the Nazis wanted, well, kinda what Glenn Beck wants.
Actually I did study some WWII stuff, and it was a non-agression pact, not an alliance of any sort. Yet as part of that non-agression pact, the Soviets provided supplies for the Nazis.

Hitler needed it so that he could fight the west without worrying about Russia until a time of his choosing. (Also supplies are always nice). Stalin needed it so that he could, yes get part of Poland because there were people of slavic descent in Poland, but also, so that he could secure borders and his position in the USSR without being interrupted by the war.

Just like people don’t understand Beck. Did you know that Beck did not want Van Jones fired (or resign)? Nothing like an off the cuff interview to bring out truth. In the interview, he said that all he wanted was to know who was vetting all of the candidates, and if it was being done, how Van Jones got hired. (That is to say, did this information come up during any vetting process, and if so, why was it not seen as a problem). According to the White House, Van Jones was NOT vetted directly, though the FBI questioned one of his old supervisors. (No one ever questioned HIM). It is kind of interesting how instead of answering the question as to how he got hired in the first place (what info came to light that caused them to give a green light), he left… Not so easy to ask pointed questions since he left.
I’d like to see one of you Hitler haters actually prove that anyone was gassed to death in Nazi Germany or the territories it occupied. Hitler was the last white hope for defending the Christian world from Jewish Communist aggression and subversion.
