chascates: This has been part of the strategy since at least the Nixon era: get a vocal minority of truly extreme right wingers out there in the media to establish that as the right wing, and thus the rest of the party can comfortably scoot a little more right each year and yet still be seen as ‘moderate’ conservatives. And because the left is a bunch of simps and idiots they simply go along with it and temper their rhetoric rightward so as not to appear to extremely left. I blame the left more than the right for the conservative tilt of what is considered ‘middle of the road’.
