Looks like a robber, right? The very serene and affable Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. was arrested Thursday after a lady called the cops in the middle of the day, reporting that she saw a man apparently trying to break into a nearby house.

Put yourself in the shoes of this lady caller: you see a small, middle-aged, polo shirted and bespectacled black man who walks with a cane, and he just saunters up to the door of a nice Cambridge house like he owns the place and attempts to force the door open. Obviously this is cause for alarm!

Sure, he’s not carrying a crowbar or wearing a facemask or doing any of those other “robber things,” but he’s pretty clearly up to no good, as evidenced by his “wedging his shoulder into the front door as to pry the door open.” (Legitimate Cantabridgian homeowners have “magic keys,” you see, that prevent their 200-year-old wooden doors from ever sticking in their frames in humid summer weather.)

By the time a police sergeant arrived to investigate, another police officer was already talking with Professor Gates. And that’s when things got CRAZY.

According to the police report, the professor got all shouty and outraged at being asked to present ID. Eventually they arrested him for being so shouty, in the middle of the day, in his house that he lives in. And now everybody’s up in arms about racism, even though that ended because Barack Obama is the president.

It’s “Amos & Andrew” all over again. At least he’s getting to meet his neighbors!

  • kernelPanic

The lady who called the cops is actually affiliated with Harvard as well. Oops.

  • Extemporanus

Apparently, there are some doors affirmative action just won’t open.

  • chascates

Just like in the movie The Watermelon Man. When Godfrey Cambridge’s character is racing for the bus he’s accused of “stealing something”. The policemen assume that, since a black man is running, he must have stolen something.

  • DangerousLiberal

My advice: Don’t hire Ward Churchill’s lawyer.

  • taylormattd

My understanding is that he stole the house from white firefighters, using affirmative action.

  • rambone

I say! It seems that they get more uppity every day!

  • Dave J.

Cops these days are authority-crazed anger bears who flip the fuck out the second somebody does not comply with one of their absurd demands. I’ve seen a number of people arrested at protests and whatnot here in Portland because a cop told them to do something for no real reason, and they dared question the reasoning behind the request.

  • President Beeblebrox

“Disorderly conduct” is at the bottom of the criminal statute barrel along with “offensive touching” and “maintaining a disorderly house.” It’s a bullshit charge that a pissed-off cop can throw at pretty much anyone he wants to if there’s anything remotely resembling a raised voice.

What’s that you say, Jeeves? A Negro is trying to enter that house? Notify the constabulatory at once!

  • DangerousLiberal

Also, “loud and tumultuous behavior?” Is John Winthrop’s great-great-great-etc.-grandson now a beat cop in Cambridge? Some city on a hill.

  • iantenna

this is the second most racist thing ever to happen at harvard, right behind soul man.

  • ManchuCandidate

My god. A black man who owns his own house and has a PhD. What the hell is the world coming to?

Seriously, nothing worse than a paranoid scared white lady. I once got pulled over by the cops in my own neighborhood because of a paranoid white lady who thought I was a Chinese gangster (I was driving to work.)

  • Tommmcatt

Police Officer: Stop right there! Who are you?
Gates: I’m Henry Louis Gates Jr., serene and affable Harvard scholar. I live here.
Police Officer: Keep your hands where I can see them!
Gates: I’m, like, seventy years old. I walk with a cane.
Police Officer: Sure you are. Let’s see some ID.
Gates: This is a Brooks Brothers suit! I’ve lived here for 20 years!
Police Officer: Well, aren’t YOU shouty! Downtown with you, boy!

    Racist Fucktards.

[re=366533]Dave J.[/re]: I was hand-cuffed for replying to some outrageous crap from an white cop with an aghast “Dude!?!”

In my wife’s car, with a girly clutch, I stalled AT a stop sign, restarted and rolled on…he, of course, treated that roll as if I just manslaughtered a whole bus of orphans. How he saw it all while finishing the paperwork from his last victim, all while parked behind the bushes, I never had the chance to ask…but one “hey, wait a second” and out of the car you go.

What happened to the search and seizure clauses? Brownshirts in facism, er fashion, again?

Somehow this will all end up being Obama’s fault.

The police report is actually pretty funny, in the way that reports written by semi-literate cops are funny. Gates was pissed off at the cop for asking him why the hell a black man was in his own house and was yelling at him. The cop asks him to take it outside because “the acoustics of the kitchen and foyer were making it difficult for me to transmit pertinent information to [dispatch] or other responding units.” Gates replies “Ya, I’ll speak with your mama outside.”

Now, which is correct? Did the very distinguished Henry Louis Gates, Jr. really try to play the dozens on Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge PD, or did the said Sgt. Crowley think he heard that since, of course, all black guys are into “yo’ mama” retorts?

  • V572625694

[re=366533]Dave J.[/re]: Heard about Francine Busby? Cops do the same things to whites (when there are known Lesbians present):

[re=366543]SayItWithWookies[/re]: Well, not in the foyer. In the pantry, anything goes.

  • CollegeStudent

AND–Gate allegedly replied, “ya, I’ll speak with your mama outside.”

…This guy is the whitest African American Studies professor. Ever.

  • SethCReedermeyer

    Extemporanus: Very nice.

  • Dave J.

I think it was Gates’ suggestion that the responding officer’s mama is so fat she needs her own ZIP CODE that was the final straw.

  • mephistopheles jefferson

Anybody but me think that Gates’s decor is fairly Afrocentric? Do you think the cop’s highly trained detective skills noticed any photos of black people all over the house? I guess when you’re homed in on a 5’11” black suspect in a possible B&E, you get kinda tunnel-visioned.

I am surprised that you guys failed to see the upside of this cops subtle racist actions. He will get suspended with pay, in other words a paid vacation during summer. When taken in this light this utterly ridiculous incident may appear racially motivated but it is just the actions of one extremely smart cop that is after a paid vacation. To paraphrase Downey: “I am the dude playing the dude disguised as another dude.” Just substitute racist and you get the clusterfuck of hilarity that this episode produced. Hell, we even have the classic “Do you know who I am” line.

  • catdance

[re=366533]Dave J.[/re]: Cops these days are authority-crazed anger bears who flip the fuck out the second somebody does not comply with one of their absurd demands.

I think some of it is that many police departments are sending their cops to Blackwater (or whatever the hell they’ve changed their name to) for training. We’re trying to get our town government to put a stop the practice here, because we don’t need a bunch of frigging mercenaries running riot on whoever they don’t like the looks of.

  • WhatTheHeck

Well, all I can say is Henry Louis Gates Jr. is just one lucky dude.
Had he gesticulated with his walking stick, then it would have been, “Your Honor, this intimidating black man pointed a weapon at us and we feared for our lives and had no alternative but to defend ourselves by emptying both our 15 round 9mm clips.”

    The end.

From the video of that incident, the cops were ready to start attacking everyone who gathered to watch the them tasing the guy.

  • Uncle Bubba

I saw the whole thing. I was sitting in the clouds above JR Gates house, in a formation that resembled the pick-nic that I reported during the presidential election, you know, the one where John McGoo was eating hot dogs with a bunch of old church ladies and one of the follow them reporters asked McGoo if he was really only 5’7″ tall and he went damn doll ballistic, spitin big chunks of tube steak and waving his arms so fast that the frequency started humming words that only the old ladies could understand and they started interpreting like he was speaking in tongue cause he was you know cause the bits and pieces of hot dog were pieces of lips and butts of cows and that’s kind of speaking in tongue well anyway that’s the same thing I saw above JR Gates house…how would I know his name if this weren’t true???

Finally, he says, “you were driving with your brights on.” I calmly reply that this was a rental car and I didn’t even KNOW how to turn the brights(which weren’t on)on . He then reaches into the car -which I didn’t think they were supposed to do – with me sitting there and starts pulling and pushing buttons, and HE can’t figure out how to turn the brights on. Finally, with absolutely nothing else to say, he tells me “well just watch it” and waves me on. Ah, New England, the South of the North

[re=366617]oldguy[/re]: You don’t understand — the Republicans (who, although they don’t brag about it, happen to be the party of Lincoln) are the real egalitarians. They represent such oppressed minorities as Alberto Gonzales, Clarence Thomas and Sarah Palin. These people were all oppressed by the lowered expectations of the liberal worldview, which conspired to keep them on a soft cushion of privilege, thereby preventing them from rising above their own limitations.

And yet these objects of the soft bigotry of low expectations managed to survive — nay, transcend — the terrible limitations imposed on them by a coddling ruling class. They rose to greatness despite being stigmatized as members of an activist-justice-declared protected minority. As a committment to their struggle, they have vowed, now that they are in power, to dismantle the entire framework of the Socialist system that has kept the overachieving white male down for so long.

So there, sir, is my humble attempt to set history straight — and to explain why it’s really the Republicans who, to this day, fight against the racism inherent in our liberal elite fascist system. I only hope — for the sake of free peoples everywhere (wipes away tear) — that they succeed.

Completely seriously, when my schoolteacher mom got her then-57-year-old-ass kicked by a crabby cop because she didn’t show enough deference, all her friends and acquaintances in LA (where we live), home to Rodney King, wondered just what it was she’d done to deserve it. All her friends in NYC, home to Diallo, jumped immediately to the (correct) conclusion that the officer was a piece of shit, that it is not in fact against the law to be less than kiss-ass with a cop, and that she was about to come into some sweet, sweet cash.

[re=366620]kipperthegod[/re]: My friend Thang punched out a traffic cop who was writing him a parking ticket. This happened in Hoian. By the time the cop got back up a small crowd had gathered and was starting to throw crap at him, so he ran away. It was hysterical – a moment I will always cherish.

Please, no sentences starting with “Completely seriously,” — unless they’re completely not.

This happens in Madison, Wisconsin [stories for another time] and Cambridge. Is it so difficult for some to believe that racism is alive and well.

  • drpangloss

Man that cop is so screwed. What a dumbass. I can imagine Cambridge PD chief saying something to this effect. “For the love of fuck, will someone please tell me the reasoning for the cop to arrest this guy in his own house please.”

By the way can the professor sue the lady who called the cops on him..because if he can oooooooooooooooooooooo someone should own two houses.

That sinister-looking prof should have stopped as soon as he saw the door was jammed, called a white firefighter to come force it open, and then just chilled and turned that frown upside down, for Pete’s sake.

Tumultuous Behavior is the new “uppity”.

  • smitallica

Personally, I’m glad they finally nailed this so-called “distinguished professor.” Now somebody just needs to jail that “incredibly brilliant and eloquent” (read: uppity) gap-toofed Cornell West (if that is even his real name), and Harvard will finally be safe for rich white people again. And Asians. Also.

If “tumultuous behavior” had been a felony during my years in the Haight, I would still be doing time in Folsom.

I think this issue is about two things: Alienation and entitlement.

Dr. Gates didn’t know his neighbors, and they didn’t know him. This is clearly demonstrated by the call to the police. Had his neighbor recognized him, she may very well come to his aid. She was, after all, motivated enough by altruism to request that the police investigate a suspected burglary. If he had given her his spare key, or had a spare with a friend, he could have used his cell phone or borrowed her phone. Worst case scenario, they could have passed the time waiting for the locksmith by amusing each other. I’m sure a Harvard professor has a lot of interesting stories and quips.

So, why did this homeowner break his own door down?
That’s far more expensive than waiting for a locksmith or any of the options I’ve presented above. And, in fact, has caused everyone much embarrassment. Much more so than if Dr. Gates had enough humility to approach one of his unknown neighbors and request assistance. It seems to have been an aggressive and impulsive act; Dr. Gates appears to have lost his cool long before the officer arrived.

He further demonstrated his sense of entitlement by berating a public servant, Officer Crowley. This man arrives to a house with the door broken in, and seizing his duty attempts to investigate a situation which often ends in violence and death. The Officer only wants to see the good Doctor’s ID to stop the investigation. This is reasonable and prudent. One man has broken into a house- if it’s his own house no crime has been committed. This man, a black professor, feels he is above a mere police officer. He is entitled NOT to comply.

Do we want to set this as a precedent?
Strange men can break into houses and act haughty and we’ll just let them carry on?
No further investigation, no proof of identity. You’re well-dressed so you must live in this nice neighborhood. Further, you’re black and I’m white, and anything I do may be construed as racist by Wonkette and her loyal readers and half of America. No need to do my job, sir. You’ve played the race card.

Officer Crowley was very kind to Doctor Gates. He did not use force on an obviously incensed and irrational man. You’re reading a lot into this event. You’re also spinning it rather unfairly. And the spin shows your own bias.

What matters to you is the race of the men, not what they did.
What matters to you is the education level of the men, not how they used it.
What matters to you is how they were dressed, not the dignity they possess.
    Madam, you are a bigot.

We are created equal, and as citizens we should all be held to the same standard. Who you are should not give you privilege. It’s quite amusing to think that if Dr. Gates had produced ID demonstrating to the officer who he was, the rhetorical question, arrest, and beer with the president all could have been avoided. And, I wouldn’t think that a black professor of Black Studies at Harvard was a start raving racist. But, his actions have educated me. I won’t, however, hold that against any other black professors of black studies or female professors of women studies. After all, that would be profiling. It is, however, still funnier to note that the “racist” cop was the one helping the morally pure handicapped black professor down the stairs. The black President couldn’t be bothered. After all, don’t you know who he is?

Oh, and you were rather prejudiced toward the physically challenged. Just because someone has a disability doesn’t mean they can’t be criminals, too!
