CRAZY NONSENSE EMPATHY

We Have A Supreme Court Nominee!

Yay break out the champagne and pizzas“President Obama has chosen federal Judge Sonia Sotomayor as his nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, two sources told CNN on Tuesday.” Jeffrey Rosen is rolling in his grave.

President Obama is expected make the official announcement in an hour or so, so maybe we will liveblog that — unless the California Supreme Court makes a very early ruling on the whole gay marriage deal, in which case we will just have to do a double-header liveblog full of gays and Puerto Ricans. This is precisely the sort of nightmare apocalypse scenario that half the Supreme Court masturbates to every night.

With brown being the new black, Roberts will make her sit in the back of the court.

If the Democrats on the Judicial Committee have and sense, they’ll be sure to mention “the historic nature of the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court” over and over. That way the Republicans will alienate Hispanics even more when call her a radical, terrorist-loving blah-blah-blah.

I love that the strongest conservative argument is that she believes something which is, in fact, true re: perspective, judgment and interpretation. Conservatives point to, among other things, her authoring of a 2008 opinion supporting the city of New Haven, Connecticut’s decision to throw out the results of a firefighter promotion exam because almost no minorities qualified for promotions.

Oh hey — remember that obnoxious Richard Cohen column from a while back complaining about this? He was actually bitching about Judge Sotomayor, although I don’t think he mentioned her by name. I wouldn’t be surprised if her ruling on this basically asserted New Haven’s legality in throwing out the results, and now it’s being portrayed as some sort of activist-cockeyed-liberal affirmative action horror.

And now that empathy is the eighth deadly sin, we’re going to hear about that again, too. Oh joy. President Obama should’ve said he was looking for a judge who liked puppies and flowers too, just to hear those excoriated by the right.

I can’t wait for Republican luminaries to decry the nomination of an Hispanic woman to the Supreme Court as “PC.” As a lifelong white male, I can’t wait for someone to finally stand up for my marginalized group. In fact, here’s a non-comprehensive list of lurking PC things to watch out for:

    What is PC these days
    Non-whites
    Women
    Jews
    Foreign languages
    The BBC
    Tacos
Italian food (with garlic in it)
    Small breweries
    Passports
    Spice (excluding pepper)
    Good gas mileage
Leaving your guns at home when you go out
    Not owning guns (of course)
    Subtitles
Being quiet in national and city parks
    Organic food
    Music without steel guitars
    Whole-grain doughnuts
    Sleeping in on Sunday mornings
    Sushi
    Jogging
    European cars

  37. hobospacejunkie:
