Is Earth Day An Ancient Egyptian Pagan Plot To Destroy Economy For Worship Of Earth Overlord ‘Gaia’?

by Jim Newell

The Indecision Forever blog ranks this Newsbusters poll as “The Dumbest Piece of Internet Pollution This Earth Day,” which would be true, if it weren’t for the comments section immediately below it.

A sampling:

  • “Yep, those illegals leave a huge mess of trash behind in the wake of their illegal entry into our country, both here and in Mexico.

    D

Keep the ILLEGALS out, join NumbersUSA to send free faxes to your reps.”

  • “Wortshipping the earth goddess. Mother earth is the god gaiah. This goes way back into egypt.”
  • “Earth Day, Green Week, Global Warming, Cap and Trade, Radical Environmentalism, Gaiaism. These and similar beliefs are rapidly becoming a state sponsored religion. This is a worldwide religion, not just an American movement. The end goal of this religion is to halt the industrial and economic advance of man, and to make man subserviant to Gaia, the earth as a living super-organism: Earth as God.”
  • “FACT: The First Earth Day; April 22, 1970 was the 100th Anniversary of the Communist Mass Murderer Vladimir Lenin’s Birthday (April 22, 1870)

Earth Day – Earth Day Going from Red to Green (FrontPage Magazine)

‘Might it be mere coincidence that Earth Day [April 22] falls on Lenin’s Birthday? No, this link was apparently intended from the beginning. Sincere environmentalists who objected that Lenin’s Soviet Union was a despoiler of the natural ecology of Russia, a dammer of rivers and polluter of ecosystems, have been ignored or silenced.’”

  • “It’s a religious festival meant to glorify the creation rather than the Creator.” Next comment in response: “ding ding ding you hit the nail on the head, brother”

But *God forbid* the MSM ever question their precious “The One” about any of these things.

Whenever people scream about saving the planet, I always like to recall Jurassic Park’s (the novel) Ian Malcolm completely destroying this collective self-inflated ego and arrogance we as a human species have created that assumes we actually have any effect on the continued existence of planet Earth.

This planet: with or without us, is good for another several hundred million years.

Yes, that is exactly what a coincidence is.

Also.

Seriously, Wonkette, what is this? “Drive readers to the brink of insanity by forcing them to come to grips with the growing number of illiterate redneck cretins surrounding them?” At least post that video of Hillary serving Dana Rohrabacher so we can laugh and give high fives and whatnot.

It was either made by Fred Thompson along with his famous “can I have a round of applause?” or else self-congradulation is just a normal thing among Conservative circles.

That is epic fail levels of stupidity, and unfortunately pollutes the entire image of enviromentalists. It’s not -all- enviromentalists that people dislike, it’s those fucks who are like the pedophile priests of a new religion.

[re=297008]Heq[/re]: The ‘Earth’ is a composite of all the living things on it, not just dirt. All of them are aware of their surroundings in some way or another, even if it isn’t the same kind of awareness humans have. Are only things with rights as defined by a particular group of humans worthy of consideration? Seems rather narrow and subject to huge gaps in understanding. If you need a ‘rights’ discussion to justify something, how about this: what about the rights of future generations to inherit a planet with biodiveristy and healthy ecosystems. Maybe you’d be more comfortable at Red State. They seem to think that being narrow-minded and demeaning equates to being an ‘adult’, too.

cuz this commenter is definitely not a right wing revolutionary:

“I am pretty guilty of cocooning and about 95% of the people I associate with are VERY Conservative Christians. I am constantly amazed at the terribly limited awareness that most people have of the debacles of the day.

Now, let me say this. If this Obama nation keeps up with shocking us, every day, with new ventures that we never thought we would see in our lifetimes, eventually all these slumbering Americans are going to wake up. I only hope that it does not come to late.

Let me say this further. If these SOB’s want to see me, and others like me, turn into the radical right wing revolutionaries that they claim we already are, just let them try to arrest the FIRST Bush administration official for this interrogation torture sh#t.

They will then find what they have been looking for. THAT will be what lights the fuse of revolution in this country and I will be proudly running out front with a name tag on.

And the running blackberry would adorn the parlors of

And the narrowest hinge in my hand puts to scorn all

*puts on his glasses like a good nerd should*

Dear Mister Pretention,

Okay, what you are discussing is the idea of universal animist awareness (the concept that all entities possess the capacity of awareness), which there is little evidence for. Given that awareness is not someone anyone outside of the self can acknowledge (I have to take it for granted that when you say you are aware you are saying the truth, your awareness has privilegded access, if you’re not a phenominological zombie), it is entirely possible that the world is aware in a different way then I may be aware, but such a distinction is therefore meaningless.

If objects have rights merely by being possible entities, then one must side with the anti-abortion lobby and say that not procreating is murder. I do not hold to this belief that a non-entity possess rights, and I would kindly request that you find me an argument which shows why one should, as action on the basis of potential wrongdoing is absurd (as every given action can have a believed upon infringment of rights).

As a side note, diversity for the sake of diversity is also an absurd comment. One need not extend intellectual validity to beliefs which can be shown to be logically invalid or absurd, you’re free to hold such beliefs, but you have no claim to force anyone to treat them as thus valid unless you can provide a justification for them.

So please, show me how the earth is meaningfully an aware entity any more then zeus is the god of lightning and I shall retract my mockery of your beliefs.

Custerwolf April 23, 2009 at 1:54 am

[re=297401]Heq[/re]: Yeah, sure, ask me now that I’m baked.

Heq April 23, 2009 at 1:56 am

Mad, I agree with you that homocentric thinking doesn’t get anyone anywhere.

However, I’m not inclined to take the step to inferring that, say, a rock is meaningfully aware.

If it is true that all entities suffer, then it would fall to the fact that the only logical interaction would be voluntary suicide by all consumptive beings, and I don’t think anyone has made that argument convincingly.

Custerwolf April 23, 2009 at 1:57 am

[re=297401]Heq[/re]: Oh – and that’s “MS.” Pretention, thank you very much. I didn’t spend all that goddamned time staving off a Y chromosome just so you could call me “Mister.”

Custerwolf April 23, 2009 at 1:59 am

[re=297407]Heq[/re]: Your entire problem lies in the fact that you believe YOU exist.

Custerwolf April 23, 2009 at 2:06 am

[re=297407]Heq[/re]: Okay, understand this may not be intelligible because I’m stoned, so forgive me, but here goes. You have no way of knowing what the awareness of a rock is. You don’t. You have no way actually of even knowing what awareness is. But that aside – even though you can’t actually know the interior life of another creature (nor even another human), you choose to live your life based on those assumptions that will least inconvenience you. And Heq, I just think that really sucks.

Custerwolf April 23, 2009 at 2:13 am

[re=297407]Heq[/re]: I do however want to compliment you on the successful carry-over of your Spock routine from back in your days as a Trekie. Well done, very well done.

Custerwolf April 23, 2009 at 10:18 am

[re=297434]lukewarm[/re]: Thanks, I appreciate that! However, you’ll notice that I never implied that rocks actually think (for that matter, neither do most humans, but I’ll save that for a whole different conversation). We were talking about awareness. I believe that rocks have consciousness – not a SELF-consciousness, like we have (and we are conscious ONLY of ourselves) – but an elemental Intelligence. Heq is so steeped in knowledge he’s got very little rooom left for Intelligence (which has nothing to do with accumulated knowledge. Simply put it’s what tells you how to breath – and we all know how little thought is involved in that). Heq is probably not aware of the difference between a conclusion and a realization. One is the result of accumulated knowledge, the other is the sudden awareness of the way things actually ARE. Albert Einstein was quite familiar with the latter, and he was no slouch. We are made of the same elements as the Earth: Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Space – just in miniature form, the only difference is in thought – and we completely made that up. Appreciation for the earth is too simple a thing for most people NOT to miss – and the true recognition of Earth’s unconditional support of life escapes just about everyone. It isn’t something you can drum into another, it has to arise organically. I oftentimes lose my patience with the continued expression of ignorance, but Heq would be wise not to take it personally.

[re=297407]Heq[/re]: I think Mr. Blifil’s sodomy of your straw man is appropriate. Your “all consumptive beings should commit suicide” is utter nonsense. Everything living thing feeds off death, even plants. Without death, life stagnates and suffers. If you actually had any real knowledge of ecology and biology, you’d realize that. The issue is balance and respect. You can’t have growing and dying out of balance.

A technologically and mentally superior extraterrestrial could use your arguments to enslave and eat humans or wipe us out. It’s justified! Humans aren’t aware enough to have rights!

Future generations are not “possible entities”. There will definitely be future generations unless we drive ourselves to extinction by acting selfishly (as we have been) instead of acting generously and with gratitude for what our ancestors and our fellow living things have given to us. It is not “potential wrongdoing” to be lacing the Earth with toxic substances and damgaging the viability of ecosystems: it causes direct harm to current and future people. Scientific fact.

You do a good job of sounding intelligent, but your psuedo-philosophical goobledygook rings hollow. Maybe other living things should have legal rights. Not the same kind of rights as humans (that would be absurd as their needs are different), but right to exist for their own sakes. Look outside your own head and your species and see the larger world out there.

Well George Carlin was just fucking stupid. One of his rare moments, but stupid as a tubifex worm. The planet can’t die, cuz i rocks aren’t alive, you dumb dead comedian fuck. All the stuff on and in those rocks can die like real quick. cf. Mars and Venus and the Permian extinction.

[re=297401]Heq[/re]: Horses are fed, let’s see if I can do this now…(I’M THE ONE WITH THE BIG LETTERS)
“What you are discussing is the idea of universal animist awareness (the concept that all entities possess the capacity of awareness),
I’M DISCUSSING NO SUCH IDEAS AT ALL. THOSE ARE YOUR IDEAS (ACTUALLY SOMEONE ELSE’S, BUT YOU HAVE ACCEPTED THEM). I LIVE LIFE ACCORDING TO THE WAY I SEE, NOT THE WAY I THINK.
“… which there is little evidence for.”
COLLECTING MEANINGFUL EVIDENCE TAKES THE PROPER INQUIRY, AND WE’RE NOT EXACTLY THERE YET.
“… your awareness has privilegded access”
THAT’S TRUE, HOWEVER, THERE ARE THOSE WHO ARE PRIVILEDGED TO HAVE THAT ACCESS ASIDE FROM MYSELF. WE ARE ENERGETIC BEINGS, FIRST AND FOREMOST, AND EVERYTHING YOU’VE EVER DONE IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE IS WRITTEN ALL OVER YOUR FACE, SO TO SPEAK. NO ONE COULD EVER HIDE ANYTHING FROM US IF WE WEREN’T SO UTTERLY PREOCCUPIED WITH, AND BLINDED BY, OUR THOUGHTS. EVERYTHING HAS ALWAYS BEEN RIGHT OUT IN THE OPEN.
“…it is entirely possible that the world is aware in a different way then I may be aware, but such a distinction is therefore meaningless.”
YOU ARE THE WORLD. THERE IS NOTHING OUTSIDE OF YOU.
“If objects have rights -”
HOLD UP. WE’LL SAVE THE RIGHTS DISCUSSION FOR SOMEONE ELSE. I’M NOT ABOUT LEGISLATING COMPASSION.
“…merely by being possible entities, then one must side with the anti-abortion lobby and say that not procreating is murder.”
YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT RULES OF CONDUCT. HAVE YOU EVER LIVED YOUR LIFE SPONTANEOUSLY? VERY FEW DO, BUT THOSE WHO DO ACTUALLY TEND TO CAUSE LESS HARM (SPONTANIETY IS NOT THE SAME AS ACTING OUT ONE’S SUPPRESSION.)IT MEANS ACTING OUTSIDE OF CONDITIONING AND PROGRAMMED BELIEFS. ONE CAN DO THAT ONLY WHEN ONE HAS ACCESS TO A CERTIAN INTELLIGENCE- WHICH IS SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS THE DHARMA, OR THE WAY OF THIINGS. AND PLEASE, THIS IS NOT ABOUT PHILOSOPHY. PHILOSOPHY IS AS DANGEROUS A TRAP AS THERAPY, FOR A HUMAN WHO IS TRYING TO WAKE FROM THEIR SLEEP. LIFE CAN NEVER BE UNDERSTOOD – IT CAN ONLY BE MISUNDERSTOOD. OF COURSE, UNTIL YOU BECOME COMPLETELY HUMBLE THAT WILL ONLY SOUND LIKE SO MUCH NONSENSE.
“… diversity for the sake of diversity is also an absurd comment.”
AU CONTRAIRE – THE UNIVERSE IS ALWAYS LOOKING TO UNFOLD IN FRESH AND UNIQUE WAYS. IT IS WE HUMANS WHO TRY TO CREATE HOMOGENITY- FOR SURVIVAL’S SAKE.

“So please, show me how the earth is meaningfully an aware entity…”
WHILE I DO NOT BELIEVE IN A MEANINGFUL UNIVERSE (WE CREATED THE IDEA OF MEANING BECAUSE WE CAN’T ACTUALLY SEE THE REALITY WHICH IS BEYOND WORDS, IT’S INDESCRIBALE). THERE’S A MEANING BEYOND OUR UNDERSTANDING, BUT LIKE YOU SAY, THAT MAKES IT IRRELEVANT AND IN A SENSE YOU ARE RIGHT.

[re=297736]Custerwolf[/re]:

You actually understand the point, but fail to grasp the whole of it. I’m quite impressed that you somehow manage to get the core of the logical arguement right and then leap to something, just wow, insane.

Okay, let’s go through this slowly.

1. The universe is not “looking” for anything. There is no evidence for zeus and there is no evidence for an aware universe. I don’t go looking for zeus, and hence don’t go looking for signs that the universe loves and is aware of me. Quite bluntly, people have been looking for such things since time began, and we have found zero, none, nil. Read some Hume, even if someone were to present me with evidence, logic would distate that it is more likely I am confused about the validity of such evidence then that the evidence leads to this conclusion.

2. Privledged access actually means no-one else has access. No-one, period. Yeah, I’ll never know if the red I see and the red you see are the same, and there is no way for me to “check up” on this.

3. Dharma doesn’t mean what you think it means.

4. Of course I don’t act spontaneously. It may sound odd, but I like to consider myself a responsable and intelligent adult who thinks things through carefully and uses the tools of logic to come to valid points (in case you haven’t guessed, I’m an academic). Others are free to consider other approaches to life, but they cannot then claim they are logical or intelligent. That is not what those terms mean, and you cannot simply co-opt them as you need. I don’t feel philosophy or reading are negatives, in fact, I would argue most of the problems right now in the world come from people reading and thinking less then is neccessary.

5. Cheap shot time, yeah, live spontaneously and have concept for logic and philosophy, worked for the Bush administration to run the world from the gut, didn’t it?

[re=297835]Heq[/re]: Far too serious BUT….

Most life is not aware. A virus isn’t looking for anything. A bacteria isn’t looking for anything.

A dog barely is.

Life is not defined as you seem to imply by awareness. That is a feature of what we call sentient beings. Not all beings. Hell not even all people are sentient beings. See teabaggers.

As far as the Earth being dead. No. You choose one meaning of Earth but absolutely fuckinglamently not the only one. The Earth is not just the dirt. It’s is the whole. Life on Earth is Earth. Everything once captured and sucked into permanent residence in the Earth’s gravitational bonds is now Earth. Kinda like Borg.

The United States is not just the dirt, it is the territory and the people and well everything else in it. Except the Mexicans; they are just the illegals.

Oh but your point about the Earth not seeking. Yeah you are right that the collective that is the Earth has no sentient seeking going on outside of the normal seeking of equilibrium that is the non-sentient goal of everything. Yeah everything is seeking that. Even Earth. Global warming is an upsetting of that equilibrium so the Earth in its non-sentient way is seeking a different equilibrium for the time being. One with dead polar bears though.

Custerwolf April 23, 2009 at 3:42 pm

Just got back from work. In truth I’m not actually here to argue any point of view. My feeling is you either see what I’m talking about (notice I didn’t say “believe”)or you don’t. And no amount of book-learning is going to grant you the ability to see it. If you’re unable to see color – don’t expect to magically have the necessary rods and cones materialize simply because you read a book on opthalmology. So. Let me read through the last few posts, see if I have anything to add, or just leave it be.

Custerwolf April 23, 2009 at 4:13 pm

[re=297835]Heq[/re]: The universe is not “looking” for anything.
THE UNIVERSE IS IMPERSONAL AND INFINITE. WHAT COULD IT POSSIBLY LACK THAT IT WOULD NEED TO BE LOOKING FOR? LET ME ASK YOU – DOES AN EXPANDING UNIVERSE IMPLY A UNIVERSE THAT IS ON ITS WAY SOMEWHERE? I DON’T BELIEVE SO. IT IS THE NATURE OF THE UNIVERSE TO EXPAND.
There is no evidence for zeus and there is no evidence for an aware universe. I don’t go looking for zeus, and hence don’t go looking for signs that the universe loves and is aware of me.
ACTUALLY, THE UNIVERSE DOESN’T GIVE TWO SHITS ABOUT YOU. NOR IS IT AWARE OF YOUR (SUPPOSED) EXISTENCE.
Quite bluntly, people have been looking for such things since time began,
NO. WHAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR SINCE TIME BEGAN IS A SOLUTION TO THEIR SUFFERING. ONE OF THOSE SOLUTIONS IS TO CREATE MYTHS. STORIES. SCIENCE IS NOTHIING BUT A STORY. BUT IT’S A GOOD STORY BECAUSE (IF IT’S GOOD SCIENCE) IT WILL REFLECT THE DHARMA.
Read some Hume,
PHILOSPHERS ARE JUST POLISHED STORYTELLERS. I HAVE NO USE FOR THEM.
Privledged access actually means no-one else has access.
DO THE AMERICAN EXPRESS PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS?
Yeah, I’ll never know if the red I see and the red you see are the same, and there is no way for me to “check up” on this.
YOU DO REALIZE THAT COLOR IS AN ENERGY, RIGHT? IT’S INTERPRETATION MAY BE SUBJECTIVE, BUT NOT IT’S ACTUAL WAVELENGTH.
Dharma doesn’t mean what you think it means.
I KNOW WHAT THE DHARMA IS. THERE IS NO MEANING.

Of course I don’t act spontaneously.
SPONTANEOUS DOESN’T MEAN WHAT YOU THINK IT MEANS.
It may sound odd, but I like to consider myself a responsable and intelligent adult who thinks things through carefully and uses the tools of logic to come to valid points (in case you haven’t guessed, I’m an academic).
ALL THE FACTS WILL NEVER BE IN – THERE’S YOUR WEAKNESS.
Others are free to consider other approaches to life, but they cannot then claim they are logical or intelligent.
THE UNIVERSE IS BEYOND LOGIC AND YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT INTELLIGENCE ACTUALLY IS. IT’S WHAT FORMED YOUR BRAIN AND WHAT ALLOWS YOU TO EXPRESS ALL THAT YOU DON’T KNOW. THAT’S WHAT TRUE INTELLIGENCE IS. IT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU “GAIN” – BECAUSE “YOU” ARE ACTUALLY IT’S BIGGEST OBSTACLE.

That is not what those terms mean, and you cannot simply co-opt them as you need.
YOU SEE THAT’S THE BEAUTY OF LANGUAGE. WE HUMANS CREATED IT (SHEESH, YOU ACT AS THOUGH GOD DID) AND WE HUMAN CAN FUCK WITH IT IN ANY WAY WE PLEASE. HOWEVER, TO KEEP THINGS SIMPLE, IT DOES HELP TO AGREE ON ONE’S TERMS. SO I DON’T USE THE WORD INTELLIGENCE IN THE SAME WAY YOU DO, BUT I WILL CONTINUE TO USE IT IN MY WAY.
I don’t feel philosophy or reading are negatives
ALL KNOWLEDGE IS DEAD KNOWLEDGE.
in fact, I would argue most of the problems right now in the world come from people reading and thinking less then is neccessary.
I AGREE, BUT I ALSO HAVE A FEELING YOU DO VERY LITTLE TRUE THINKING. MOST PEOPLE DON’T. EINSTEIN< NEWTON – THOSE ARE THINKERS. YOU SIMPLY FORM WONDERFULLY LOGICAL SENTENCES OUT OF THE WORDS FLOATING AROUND IN THE IDEAOSPHERE – BUT YOU HAVE BROKEN THE CARDINAL RULE BY FORGETTING THAT “THE WORD IS NOT THE THING AND THE MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY.”
“live spontaneously …… worked for Bush.”
THAT’S HOW I KNOW YOU HAVEN’T A CLUE WHAT TRUE SPONTANEITY IS. IT DOES NOT MEAN “WINGING IT, OR GOING ON A GUT FEELING.” IT’S WHAT ALLOWS YOUR BREATH (AND LOVE)TO COME NATURALLY. IF YOU ACTUALLY HAD TO STUDY AND PONDER IT, YOU’D CHOKE.

Custerwolf April 23, 2009 at 4:16 pm

[re=297923]zenferret[/re]: Most life is not aware.
AGREED
A virus isn’t looking for anything.
YES IT IS. IT’S CALLED SURVIVAL. THE DRIVE TO MAINTAIN AND EXIST IS JUST LIKE THE ROTATION AND SPINNING OF THE EARTH, IT’S A FORCE SO POWERFUL AND ENORMOUS THAT NO ONE NOTICES IT.
A dog barely is.
WELL, EXCEPT TATER. NO I AGREE. DOGS ARE FOR THE MOST PART UNCONSCIOUS.
Life is not defined as you seem to imply by awareness.
PLEASE ELABORATE?
That is a feature of what we call sentient beings.
PLEASE DEFINE “SENTIENT”, I WANT TO BE SURE WE’RE ON THE SAME PAGE.

[re=298060]Custerwolf[/re]: “Most life is not aware.”

Let me correct that – I agree that it is not SELF aware. I believe human beings are the only creatures who are conscious of themselves – which is both a blessing and a curse.
But there is actually something BEYOND self-consciousness and that’s what interests me.
The self is a nifty survival tool, that’s all. The REAL fun begins only when you lose your preoccupation with survival.

Here’s a question for anyone – name me ONE thing you do that isn’t geared towards your own survival (understanding that we actually have a kind of “super-survival” and our motives may not be readily apparent)?

The most important learning I can recommend (nonfiction) concerns the understanding of how our brains work.

MarieDevine April 25, 2009 at 11:32 pm

Earth Day is another man made observance day to remind us we are going the wrong way. Jesus said, What does it profit a man is he wins the whole world and loses his soul? We have won the world and it is killing us, physically, spiritually and emotionally. We have been led into a lifestyle that keeps us enslaved to one another. We are away from all the goodies we bought with our money because we live in bondage and fear and embrace employment. We work because we need to pay the bills, most of which we have because we thought we needed to be employed. Now we are told we must save money for our children to go to college to be successful. This is not the abundant life God promised. We are going the wrong way.

The goal in life is not employment; that caused the world problems of pollution, energy crisis, reoccurring financial crises, war, immigration, disease and social security inadequacies. The goal is a garden paradise where our trees, plants and pets give fresh food around us. That is a retirement lifestyle where our time is our own to love and help others. See: http://www.divine-way.com for more details and God’s solutions to world problems we created by ignoring His wisdom.

Custerwolf April 26, 2009 at 1:49 pm

[re=299879]MarieDevine[/re]: Okay, that’s a great idea that belongs in the religious fundamentalism section.
There is no such thing as a Utopia. There is no such thing as peace on Earth. We humans create these ideas in an unconscious attempt to re-create the womb – a place where we were safe and taken care of. You are living in a box, and instead of seeking to escape the box, you are trying to make it more comfortable, trying to make it a better box. We are imperfect beings. It is an imperfect Universe. Perfection insinuates balance and harmony – two things which do not exist in reality. Homeostasis is balance in motion – which means it’s not really balance at all. Leaving aside the fact that god is nothing more than a creation of the human mind (and not a very creative one since it’s basically a projection of a parental human being), there is no return to paradise. There’s only the dissolution of the ignorance (meaning blindness, not a lack of knowledge) that keeps us from seeing that paradise is right here right now.
And just so to be clear, paradise is not having everything the way you want it. Because of our human nature, even our ideas of paradise are limited.
