DAVID PATERSON IS FINISHED: New York Gov. David Paterson, whose reign started about a year ago in that very auspicious first week when he admitted to cheating on his wife and doing coke all the time, is trailing New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo 61-18 (!) in a theoretical gubernatorial primary poll. In a theoretical general election matchup against RUDY TERRIBLE GIULIANI he is losing 53-32. [Quinnipiac]

ShamWow: To be fair, California was primarily responsible for our last two bubbles (housing and tech). New York was just the i-banking, securitizing, bullshit-peddling enabler in each of those cases.
jagorev: But unlike the federal one, doesn’t the state budget have to be balanced? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in favor of taxing everything from soda to dance lessons, but given the fact that revenue has fallen off a cliff it seems to me his options are rather limited. He’s bumbling, yes, but still sucks to be him.
After that Q poll, I think he’s gonna need a little black guy (and blind guy) thinking time!

jagorev: I agree, but Patterson gets points for “If I’d known higher taxes would have gotten Boss Limbaugh to leave the city, I’d have raised them sooner” remark.

jagorev: I dunno much about the munnies, but I think NY bonds are probably close to junk level already. The stimulus munnies are keeping parks open and teachers working, though, so that’s a plus.
jagorev: Um….I think there’s some housing developers in Florida, Nevada and Arizona who might disagree with that sentiment. And I might also refer to your “enablers” as “a-holes who caused this mess.”
But then again, I’ve been calling for the severed heads of bankers since long before it became fashionable.
I see this polling data and the first question I ask is: “how much will this all change between now and the primary season?”
Let’s not forget how deceiving poll numbers have been in the past. Remember back in 2002? Carl McCall was well behind in the primary polls to – surprise surprise – Andrew Cuomo. McCall of course chipped away until Cuomo basically forfeited.
And given Cuomo’s involvement in the AIG scandal (see http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/05/what-did-andrew-cuomo-kno_n_183327.html), there’s no reason to think things can’t turn around just as fast for Governor Paterson.
