Coleman Campaign’s Entire Database Of Donors Breached, All Financial Information Leaked Onto Internet

  this can happen

We know that at least 89% of you were planning to donate to Norm Coleman’s campaign in Minnesota within the next five minutes but STOP STOP STOP AND BACK AWAY FROM THE INTERNET DONATION FORM!!! Because oh look at this, someone hacked into the Coleman donor list, accessed the *publicly available Coleman donor list* took down every donor’s credit card number and posted it all on Wikileaks in an Excel spreadsheet. Hmm, maybe Norm should take this humiliating opportunity to drop out of that 2008 election in which his loss has already been certified?

Or he could run with the Responsible Conservative’s response to a complete failure of this kind, which is to ask federal investigators to INVESTIGATE how some mean cads — Dems, no doubt — broke into his computer and stole 4,715 donors’ worth of “names, addresses, phone numbers, donation amounts, partial card numbers and security codes.” A publicly funded investigation of this sort could take months, you see, so it would be imprudent for Coleman to concede the race until its findings are released and America knows the TRUTH about his shaky firewall.

Oh and uhh… before we go… um… the thing is? He’s going to need more… donations… to cover these turbulent next few months… yeah. So even though you are essentially giving your full financial information to the entire Internet… well uhhhh ONLY NORM COLEMAN CAN STOP SOCIALISM so go give him another $50 bucks right now, got it?

I smell a rat. Seriously, I think there’s a dead rat in the room but one over from this one.

  2. Mr Blifil

Oh he will be blaming Al of course, and using this as pretext to be appointed provisional Senator, after the Feds frog march Al out of the Senate chamber for hacking or some such.

TalkingPointsMemo suggests that the data breach was not so much the “OMG teh evil hackerz” variety, but the “some jagoff staffer fucked up and posted shit on the website” variety:

Last night, Coleman’s entire online donor list received an e-mail from a Wikileaks.org e-mail address, notifying them that their private information had been posted in a publicly accessible area of Coleman’s campaign site this past January 28, and has circulated out of public view.

  4. Lascauxcaveman

Pfft. Nobody made much of a stink when I did the same thing to Alan Keyes’ entire donor database last year.

Of course, six names and four credit cards (two of them canceled) isn’t as impressive.

  5. shortsshortsshorts

Even better, his campaign broke the law in Minnesota by not telling their donors. OOPS.
    Minnesota statute 325E.61 states:

    (a) Any person or business that conducts business in this state, and that owns or licenses data that includes personal information, shall disclose any breach of the security of the system following discovery or notification of the breach in the security of the data to any resident of this state whose unencrypted personal information was, or is reasonably believed to have been, acquired by an unauthorized person. The disclosure must be made in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay, consistent with the legitimate needs of law enforcement, as provided in paragraph (c), or with any measures necessary to determine the scope of the breach, identify the individuals affected, and restore the reasonable integrity of the data system.

In other words, if the EVEN HAND of justice or whatever rears its ugly head, Norm Coleman will go to jail for like 1,000 years, or forever, whichever comes first.

  6. Voted for Mondale

Norm’s campaign “experts” did not even password protect the file. What idiots!

  7. Monsieur Grumpe

What do you expect from a guy who refinanced his house 12 times in the last 14 years? Norm is going to need some good kosher hobo bean recipes.

[re=262640]shortsshortsshorts[/re]: Ok I will caveat this by noting that the full credit card numbers were not being stored, just the last four digits, but it also a violation of credit card regulations to store the credit card security codes in your database. If you are guilty of such a violation your bank can cancel your payee credit card payment clearing services and Visa can sue your ass off.

Any by you, I mean you or me. Senators and former Senators are, of course, above the law and regulations.

  9. Zadig

Speaking of “hacking”, did you hear about the kid who “hacked” Sarah Palin’s yahoo mail account being charged again? Apparently, prosecutors are trying to hit him with felony wire fraud, identity theft, and obstruction of justice on top of the hacking charges. Which is hilarious, because apparently answering a Yahoo pop quiz with Wikipedia as a cheat sheet is, like, quadruple evil, instead of, you know, a misdemeanor.

[re=262665]Zadig[/re]: Unrelated to any topic but Zadigs, the Star is running a story that Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston have broken up! OH NOES!! Who could have forseen this? And why? Because the Palins consider the Johnstons to be “white trash”.

    LAFFS.

  11. NegativeZero

The best part about all this is that people didn’t notice the database was exposed until Norm Coleman faked his own website crash. Why? To make it look like THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of supporters were coming to his website at the start of the recount trial. It was only once it crashed that people started looking around and, ooops, there’s a donor database.

His fake ineptitude exposed his real ineptitude!

  12. Atheist Nun

Ha, too bad there’s no Norm Coleman soundboard on the internet, that plus his list of donors = COMEDY GOLD™.

  13. Rary Guppert

all right! we can use all those credit card numbers to bail out the economy. problem solved. who says republicans aren’t good for the economy?

  14. TGY

Just when you think he can’t be any more humiliated than being beaten by Al Franken, there’s yet another turd in the barnyard.

  15. Tra

Perhaps this is the first inkling that Norm’s Captain Ahab-like quest will eventually destroy them all?

  16. mattbolt

Ooh, this list is a beauty. I’m just going through it now, looking for people in Minnesota I know… I thought I found one, but it turned out to be a really prominent lawyer in Minnesota. So yeah, I’ve got his address now.

Also interesting: they define whether people are Sign-Ups, House Files, or “Franken”… oh wow, they kept tabs on every Franken volunteer too! I mean, that’s the only thing I can guess.

Anyone know any prominent Minnesotans while I’ve got this thing open?

[re=262848]mattbolt[/re]: Figured it out! There must’ve been some “Your message for Franken” box on the website because all the ones tagged with Franken also have a box for wingnut messages to Al

    Sample:

I AM A DEM AND MY FAMILY AND MY EXTENDED FAMILY ALL DEM WILL REMEMBER WHAT SIDE OF THE FENCE YOU SIT ON ESP AT THE POLLS WE WILL REMEMBER

Franken, You are a disgrace to the Human Race by your action of insulting a brave American General and in giving aid and comfort to the enemy during Wartime. You and Jane Fonda should get your acts together and see if it will play on the American Stage! The title,? Two Traitors are we.

AL FRANKEN, GO BACK TO WHAT YOU WERE DOING BEFORE. YOU ARE AN EMBARRASSMENT TO THE STATE OF MINNESOTA. IF YOU LOVE THE ENEMY SO MUCH WHY DON’T YOU JOIN THEM. I WILL DO EVERYTHING WITHIN THE SPHERE OF MY INFLUENCE TO SEE YOU DEFEATED AND NORM COLEMAN RE-ELECTED TO THE SENATE.
    ron bjorklund blaine, mn

WE NEED TO HOLD AL FRANKEN ACCOUNTABLE FOR HIS CONTINUING SILENCE ON MOVEON.ORG’S VICIOUS PERSONAL ATTACKON gENERAL pETRAEUS, AND THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMENSERVING UNDER HIS COMMAND.

Your attitude about calling General Petraeus, who is the defender of our freedom, a traitor is treasonous! When does your boat leave the country?

Dear Al You will probably not get this because it is a right wing tools web sight. Here goes anyway. Way to go, keep up the good work I will definatly vote for you! Norm Coleman is a tool. We need people like you in the senate. I thought we had a good senator in Amy but I am beginning to doubt her courage. To Norm now you know how this minnesotan feels.

Wow there’s enough in here for an entire Children’s Treasury of Stuff Wingnuts Put in a Comment Box Directed at Al Franken on Norm Coleman’s Website

To the poor violated Coleman supporters – Seriously, people, the man is an idiot, how can you be surprised that your data was left out on the front porch?

Also, a children’s treasury of passwords people picked for the Norm Coleman website:

    cooter (Carl Kuhl, city withheld)
    eat4two (Jay Mandeville, Hopkins MN)
    ethicalnorm (Dick Cottrell, Chanhassen MN)
fatcat69 (Used by TWO SEPARATE PEOPLE, come on now)
    geddylee (Robert Reddell, Channahon IL)
    NormRulz08 (Bret Hensel – a volunteer, too!)
password (Dan Martin from Babylon NY is retarded at password security)

    tomdaschle (Ann Vardeman, Minneapolis
vikings (Tied with “welcome” as all-around winner, each have 3 separate people)

  21. davesnothere

OK, so this not the final indication to even Coleman himself that he needs to just slink off now because what? Sweet sufferin Jeebus, you can’t make this shit up.

  22. adriarichards

Interesting note; no one from the Norm Coleman office contacted me in January. I certainly would have talked with them, asked questions and listened.

When I posted to my blog 1/28/2009, I included photos of Norm Coleman’s database leak to raise awareness of what I found, my take on what I saw regarding security of the website, links to the MN State Statute 325E.61, a link to the HUGE LIST of data breaches and what businesses and organizations could do to start taking steps to protect their websites and data:
