Irrelevance Quarterfinals Begin: It’s Browne vs. McCain and Wieseltier vs. Reagan

  • North Korea is launching a space rocket into Earth’s orbit, which is a known US territory. It’s… not going to like what it sees. [Daily Beast]
  • John McCain and Jackson Browne continue to sue each with abandon over the pressing legal issue of when it’s okay to play “Running on Empty.” (Jurisprudence spoiler alert!: never.) [The Caucus]
  • HERE, the most radical Marxist subset of spatially-concerned ACORNS, is folding in on itself in an abyss of corruption, as demonstrated by its use of a gritty font in its socialist agitprop. [Ben Smith]
  • Disgusting fan-fiction coming out of DC today, as Washington’s most homosexual fat cats fantasize about what they’d most like to hear Barry to scream at them during sex. [Politico]
  • Ha ha someone (Jesus) forced Leon Wieseltier to sort of arguably and incidentally go back on calling Ronald Reagan a “fool”, which was a popular put down back when Wieseltier was in a position to throw insults, in the 80s. Winner, as always: The Corner. [The Corner]

North Korea’s rocket will “purposely” fail, which they will then blame on imperialistic American “gravity”. It’s really a win for everyone.

Hey guys… remember back when we were stunned and shocked by Politico’s revelation that some college professors are paid a salary? Well, I decided to see what our poor under-appreciated, underpaid, and under-laid college football coaches have to try to get by on.

Serolf Divad: But football coaches bravely…nay, SELFLESSLY…occupy and tame otherwise surly and violent ogre-youths, ensuring that they direct their vacant, brutish rage at each other for our entertainment, rather than at us and the rest of civilized society. Truly, they are Amur’can heroes, worthy of every penny (even if they lose every game in a season and cause a tuition raise at their schools)

I read that Corner thing (because I’m a masochist, if you must know) and wondered what kind of scrapple-brained nitpicking hagiographer would spend his time building such ninnified circumlocutions in an attempt to defend Reagan’s legacy in the face of obvious evidence that he never practiced what he preached. Then I read the byline: Ramesh Ponnuru. Had I noticed that at first, I wouldn’t have bothered.

loudmouthredhead: or, it will succeed, and we can hire North Korea to run NASA.

“Wieseltier now concedes that in truth, what Reagan said was that government was the problem, not the solution, ‘in this present crisis’.”

I don’t think providing the context helps much here. Reagan was STILL full of crap!

Serolf Divad: Don’t coaches justify the big salaries through the dollars the programs bring into the college? I saw interview with a coach this weekend and I can’t find the link…
I’m wondering what the ROI on the LED was compared to the ROI for football here at Illinois.

Bailout for “poets, sonneteers, and crooners” NOW!

Good news for Walnuts: Led Zep called and offered use of “Dazed & Confused” for a nominal fee (i.e., buttsecks with Cindy & Meg & a mackerel).

I personally like John McCain’s older songs better.

pondscum: I’m pretty sure football programs spend more than they raise. I’m also pretty sure statistics can be found for both points of view.

Lemme get this straight. AP wants to shut down the internets by claiming there’s no such thing as “fair use” and that every single blade of grass is covered by copyright protection. Meanwhile AP went out of their way to tickle John McCain’s balls at every opportunity during the national election. And now John McCain is continuing to pursue legal protection under the concept that ripping off an artist’s song without permission is “fair use.”

OK I think I’m caught up now.

Come here a minute: Serolf Divad: Exorbitant salaries for for gym teachers compared to scholars show which things the affected universities consider more important. That’s true even if the football program makes a “profit*” or “boosters” pay the coach.

*Does anybody factor in free use of the (typically) state-owned facilities?

Athletic departments at most if not all major colleges are separate, usually non-profit corporations (enough qualifiers in there for you?) While it is indeed obscene the salaries paid to coaches of a children’s (exceedingly violent) game, the coaches’ munnies don’t come from the taxpayers. Also. Probably.
