Mark Sanford, Welfare Queen

by Sara K. Smith  9:19 am February 20, 2009

He bought the governor's mansion with food stamps.Just recently South Carolina governor Mark Sanford was saying he wasn’t so sure his state would take any of the federal government’s stimulus bill money, because that bill was so awful, all full of pork and porky things. He was taking a principled stand! And then a bunch of snarky liberals like Paul Begala said “Fine, leave billions of dollars of free government aid on the table then,” so of course Sanford had to reassess.

Yesterday Sanford reckoned that he would have to take a hard look at the numbers and see where exactly all this FREE MONEY was going. If it was directed at sufficiently worthy non-pork-like targets then fine, he might take it, but otherwise no thank you! South Carolina can get by without food stamps and secondhand clothes from the Democrat Congress, because they have a sturdy tripartite economy built on cracklins, shrimp, and sex tourism to depend on.

Mark Sanford’s name was widely floated as a potential VP prospect for John McCain last year. This grandstanding clown is what passes for a “leader” in the new hip-hop GOP.

So he was against it before he was for it? Flip flopper.

shanemacgowan February 20, 2009 at 9:24 am

The “thanks but no thanks” line worked so well for Moosekiller Barbie that he figured he would give it a try.

TGY February 20, 2009 at 9:26 am

WaitlemmethinkaboutitOK!

Perhaps South Carolina would like to secede from the Union…again. Go right ahead. We’re wating.

memzilla February 20, 2009 at 9:28 am

So the next time Charleston gets hit with a hurricane, we can all tell him to suck it big time? After all, any relief would just be a stimulus package in different clothes.

ManchuCandidate February 20, 2009 at 9:29 am

Why would anyone be surprised by this?

For a long time the Repubs were virulently anti-gay and anti-drug as a party could get, but as we have seen for much of the W Era when penis, anus and/or meth was offered many took up on that offer.

Cape Clod February 20, 2009 at 9:29 am

Is that idiot Miss Teen South Carolina part of their sex tourism trade?

norbizness February 20, 2009 at 9:29 am

In the world of political kabuki theater, this ploy is even more transparent than Dr. Girlfriend’s Queen Etherea costume. South Carolina would have to devolve to a turnip-based economy something in the early twenty-teens if they hadn’t reached out for the Chinese bank-financed life preserver.

Governor Rick “Consort for Men” Perry of my beloved, stupid state of Texas did the same thing.

Bruno February 20, 2009 at 9:29 am

The Hip-Hop GOP needs more free cash to add extra Bling.

Serolf Divad February 20, 2009 at 9:31 am

Seriously, in six months, when states like South Carolina are experiencing 20% unemployment, I hope a mob of angry citizens burn down the governor’s mansion.

magic titty February 20, 2009 at 9:39 am

‘Being against it doesn’t preclude taking the money’

…Hm. I think the GOP just found a new slogan.

hobospacejungle February 20, 2009 at 9:45 am

South Carolina, like many other supposedly independent, pull yourself up by your bootstrap states, sucks in far more federal $$ than they fart out. They are the definition of a welfare state, much like Mooselini’s Alaska. So go ahead & decline the cash, Gov. Fuckface. See how long you stay in office when a third of your constituents are eating shoe leather for dinner.

Fox News Light February 20, 2009 at 9:56 am

Days like this make it sad to live in SC….why us poor asses aren’t all Dems I don’t know….

Oh yea, Racism.

However, thank you for taking the money Sanford, now SC doesn’t have to secede from SC.

Joshua Norton February 20, 2009 at 9:58 am

Poor baby. Much like the Very Important Investment Bankers, he must be handled with kid gloves and cajoled into accepting his free money. He obviously feels guilty about taking it away from Haliburton in Iraq who needs it so much more.

Maybe daddy will buy him a new car to make him feel better.

Mild Midwesterner February 20, 2009 at 9:59 am

Come on, Governor Sanford! Don’t you realize how many Civil War reenactor costumes a couple billion in surplus funds will buy?

snideinplainsight February 20, 2009 at 10:01 am

He can just send all that sweet sweet stimulus cash to Wonkette – we’re stimulating as fast as we can!

I’m with Sanford on this one. Who needs stimulus money when you’ve got ‘smiling faces and beautiful places’? And rainbows. Also.

Violenza February 20, 2009 at 11:08 am

Repubs treat this stimulus like the the most abhorent thing imaginable, “consider” not taking the money, and then take it anyway. I somehow wouldn’t be surprised if Sanford happened across a group of people assaulting a passed out chick, said, “This is terrible! I’m calling the cops,” only to follow it up with, “Welllllll, it would be a waste of perfectly goof roofies if I did that. Oh, what the hell! Make room for Needledick, I call sloppy fifths!”

Asshat.

4tehlulz February 20, 2009 at 11:22 am

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to South Carolina for that “War of Northern Aggression” thing. To atone, I am perfectly willing allow South Carolina to be free from the Union, in exchange for all those billions of dollars in tax money that it’s gotten from the rest of the country since….oh…1865. If SC cannot come up with the cash, ripping up all the highways the feds paid for, for example, would be an acceptable substitute.

DustBowlBlues February 20, 2009 at 11:27 am

The Republican strategy for revitalizing their party is so passive-aggressive. We’re going to hold our breath until you let us make all the decisions.”

It’s time to break out the images of another Republican who thought a depression would be good for us: Herbert Hoover. As in, “I think it’s dangerous to take the Herbert Hoover approach to the recession.”

Although I live in a dumbass state, I wouldn’t really mind if the states that embrace the stimulus and go for it don’t leave OK, SC, TX, LA in the dust. This thing could be the making of Charlie Crist, though I don’t think I’m quite ready for that.

I saw the clips of the printing presses running on full throttle and workers carrying enormous stacks of newly printed money to get shipped off to teh poors. At this point, fella, the money’s been printed. Inflation is in effect. We have taken the loan. Take the f’in’ money.

Also, “free federal aid,” is a misnomer. There ain’t nothing free about this. In fact, it’s probably one of the most expensive things our country has ever bought.

They seemed absolutely sure that somewhere in SC was the next target on the list right after the WTC, Pentagon and White House/Capitol. Kid you the fuck not. Bizarro world.

Truth123 February 20, 2009 at 5:51 pm

I don’t think a lot of you understand the Stimulus Bill very well. Let’s just take a little section from it, the housing market. Here is what happens when the government loans money. First it has the right to tell those companies that borrowed money what they can and can’t spend that money on and how they can spend it and to whom. Second, the government wants it’s money back eventually, at a certain interest rate. This automatically makes banks, already hurting for money, raise mortgage rates. So, the house that you could have bought last year for 5.1% for 30 years, by the end of this year will be anywhere from 6.1-7.1. This helps no-one. The First Time Home buyers get a nice $8000 tax break, but this bill changes who can buy a house. Banks were allowed to create mortgages for new home buyers with a credit score of 600 and a combined income of $62000.00, but by the end of the year it will be raised from a credit score of 600 to 620 or 640 and the income will be lowered to $50000.00 or so. It’s a catch-22 either way. I’m not sure whom Obama expected to be able to buy a house with these criterias, but it sure want be me beacuse me and my wife make $5000 too much and my score is just below the mark. Good luck getting the average American to purchase a home either. By the way, I am concidered an average American by government standards.

HussienOhBummer February 20, 2009 at 5:52 pm

I can’t figure it out. Does Wonkette mean hate, gay or liberal? Or a combination of all three?

Sanford, was against it because the provisions outlined in the stim pack says that the money a state receives HAS to be spent on the items stipulated.
In other words, Stanford, and the rest of the shit-kicker-hillbilly red state govs, by law, must spend the money on the programs outlined by the stim-pack. They cannot spend it on a new football stadium, or the Loretta Lynn Memorial/Opryland Amusement Park/Cyclorama. The govs, by Federal law, have to feed children, and try to help their citizens out of the terrible mess we’re in. That was what he meant when he said he wasn’t going to take the money. The loop holes weren’t big enough. Now, since he’s read a newspaper, or two, and saw his stupid name smeared all over the world press, for being a dumb-ass hillbilly, oligarchal shit-for-brains, he’s reconsidered!

Press Release: Open Letter to First Lady from an Obama Mama/ or, I can’t get my Republican Governor to even care!
Feb. 24, 2009, Faith Pau’lele, e-mail: faith.hawaii@yahoo.com

I hope the Media might focus on this Supreme story this week and not so much on Gay rights in Hawaii!

Dearest Mother of ‘Our’ White House and Bless You All for giving me this feeling!
My President is showing the Country that it is about individuals not political or financial – mass held beliefs. President Obama, My President, will call on each of us by name to account, not for our philosophy but for our actions. I am writing you, dear First Lady, because I have written everyone else, including your very busy husband, as I again will send this to all who will receive it. Bear with me as I will try to limit, all my attempts, to just one chance, fast and in a readable newsy-way. Because my goal is to Be Heard about issues which my soul constantly sobs about…

This is a prayer to anyone who will listen; Please stop my Republican Governor from appealing the Judgment of the Highest Court of Hawaii to the US Supreme Court tomorrow. Gov. Linda Lingle wants the power to SELL Hawaiian-Trust Lands, she calls them ‘ceded’. Hawaii’s Supreme Court ruled the Government should wait until all the Hawaiians’ land claims are heard. Linda can’t wait. Even darker is the concern she is trying to break the entire Hawaiian ‘Inheritance’ that is still left. Like Hawaiian Language Schools, or Gathering Rights.

I do not expect the oil white men in wigs in Congress to understand, just as I expect the African Americans will never get their 40 acres and a mule. (Where’s Pres. Obama’s State Monument to his Log Cabin in Hawaii?) The Mainlanders won’t even get Hawaii straight on the national weather maps, much less understand the history of how only a few decades ago America (7 white men, one of them named Dole) annexed all the Hawaiian Islands to the US. How the Hawaiian Queen commanded her people not to fight. Maybe if it had been bloody, like the Native American’s, it would have been taught in school, how brave our soldiers were. The Queen didn’t want the Hawaiians that were left to die in war.

Understanding this history is important. The Queen was a mother, just like you Mrs. Obama, just like me. 70% of the Hawaiian Population was killed by disease when the missionaries 1st came here. The HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE was OUTLAWED. The Hawaiian Priests and Priestesses were killed or jailed; their traditional spiritual dance was outlawed, turned into today’s hula. The Queen had become an educated woman; she believed the promises of the legal system of the white man. She wrote a will, she petitioned Washington and its Presidents until the day she died.

What the Supreme Court needs to know is… The Hawaiian’s linage, birth certificates, heritage was a chanted prayer each child learned in his turn. Never written down! ORAL HISTORY! When the language was outlawed they lost all credentials, all proof of blood, birth and relationship to Queen. Hawaiian’s had no words in their language for ownership of land, the thought of anyone owning land was sacrilege. The Queen left all her land (So generous of the US to give her some, as they plotted and divided the majority for themselves) to the people of Hawaii!! Anyone who has a beating heart cannot misunderstand the intent of the Queens Last Will and Testament!

This remains a battle over blood, and making the Hawaiian’s produce legal facts that have been systematically erased by the same who now are suing for more of what the Hawaiians’ never gave. Gov. Linda Lingle is rushing through a position that if allowed a vote, I believe, the majority of Hawaiian voters, no matter what color or creed or culture, would reject.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT MONEY, THIS IS ABOUT HEART! My Republican Governor has none!

And just to prove it, I summarize all my other letters:

—EDUCATION: Just as sign-ups for free school lunches has shot to almost 98% of all children, Linda has cut those benefits. 3 months ago Linda wanted to close all failing schools to balance her budget. Now suddenly she wants to Take-Over all failing schools after President Obama’s Federal Money appears.

—HEALTH CARE: Linda stopped the Children’s Health Program campaigning with Palin, stating that it didn’t work. Linda wouldn’t fund it. She gave her State of the Union Address and bragged 1st how she cut 50% percent off the children’s welfare rolls. Linda was proud, I cried through the rest of her speech. I know these children, their teeth are rotting out of their mouths and they can look forward to bad heart health because of it.
4 months ago the poorest people over 65 and all the disabled, below the poverty level received a one page letter demanding they choose by Jan. 1st or the state would choose for them, instead of Medicaid an “Ohana” program or an “Ever Care” program. After much research I have learned no one knows anything about what is coming. But the poor know because they have started receiving doctor bills that read like this one, an over 65 man’s example of one office billing…
One Office Visit: 45 mins… $157.18
Medicare payment -33.62
Medicare Adjustment -44.97
Medicaid payment -141.98
Medicaid Payment Adjust 141.98
———————————————
YOU OWE….. $78.59
Welcome my dearest Grams and Gramps, Tutus and anyone disabled through no fault of your own. Those living below the poverty level welcome, to your new insurance, which is none at all. The Doctors are scared they will never get paid the $30 dollars which is their portion if they are on salary at their clinic. The Doctors are in the dark about what is going on and tired of more applications and red tape and paper work, all for the average Hawaiian Salary for Doctors of $34,000 a year. We are losing our Doctors in droves, with no sympathy or help from Lingle, who can afford to fly to the mainland if she needs to. I wonder if singling out the old and disabled only, for these programs, is discriminatory.

—Gov. Lingle refused to help when Dole Pineapple left; kicking 5 Generations of plantation workers off the only land and homes they had ever known. Dole plowed all the Pineapple fields under, so no-one would “profit off the pineapples.

—Gov. Lingle refused to help when Molokai Ranch left and told the residents of that Island now they had to pay for water from them, Gov. Lingle refused to help even when it appeared they would soon be out of water.

—Gov. Lingle just watched as Aloha Airlines Failed.

—Gov. Lingle announces cuts to all charities, and non-profits, education, teachers.

—Gov. Lingle refused our new Presidents invitation to meet him in Washington, Lingle just having returned from campaigning for weeks with Gov. Palin for Vice Pres., said she didn’t think we could afford it! Pres. Obama wrote her a letter and she refused to answer. When asked for shovel ready projects why didn’t she say our Monorail done the way it was promised? Fix our Gas Problems? Instead she plans to TAKE-OVER our failing schools.
Just give the damn money to the Teachers, Schools, Doctors and those living on the streets. Our poor Vietnam Vets living on the beaches, homeless, unrecognizable as former soldiers, lost in a system that won’t admit it’s mistakes.

And stop your appeal to take land from all Hawaiian’s; I am a Hawaiian too, although white, I have a heart. Are you, like all the Republicans, only worried about your political future? Can’t you spend one minute and think who you are hurting with your agenda!
Texas is getting a whole billion more than Hawaii, WHY GOVENOR LINGLE didn’t you ask for us.

Thank you Mrs. Obama, for listening, I hope there is someone you can show this to, who can at least care about what this woman and her politics is doing to the Hawaiians.

Sincerely,
Faith Pau’lele

P.S. I still believe my past e-mailed bailout plan would have worked: Give each Citizen, man woman and child ½ million by check. They take the check to their local GOOD bank and deposit it. The first thing the bank does is send the Federal Treasury that person’s portion of the national debt. Each person then has over 400,000 to pay off their house, buy a new car, pay for their education and invest for the future. The government insures these amounts for two years. Everyone spends their money as they wish. Everyone has the same amount. If you have more debt, or more than one mortgage, well, tough. If you are mad because some families have more kids, thus more stimuli, tough you could have had children too. I believe it would be cheaper and fairer in the long run. Very stimulating. A great Equalizer.

And the Gentlemen that scream at us from the floor of the Stock Market, that it is our entire fault and you won’t bail us out. We are not stupid! Your blame makes me believe you live in ‘at least’ one house, have enough to eat, have health insurance, a pension and make over a ¼ million a year. You might have to pay taxes this year and you are pissed! Tough! Take it like the homeless, elderly, children, single moms and all those in America living in Poverty.

Even Rupert has to apologize today! It is not about Money it is about Heart! And those who don’t have heart will out!
