It seems that racists still haven’t gotten over Barack Obama’s election victory, alas. For example: Arkansas. The Arkansas House Committee on State Agencies and Governmental Affairs rejected a standard symbolic resolution congratulating Barack Obama on his historic victory this morning, 11-6, after a couple of Republicans took issue with language describing “the United States as a nation founded by slaveowners.” Oh my god.

The debate centered on competing historical viewpoints. Flowers argued that the language was not meant to be offensive, and that anyone who found it so didn’t have a clear understanding of the history of the nation and the role slavery played.

Greenburg and Garner countered that while slavery was a terrible part of the country’s history, to suggest that all the founding fathers were slaveowners and that the country was founded on the institution of slavery, while ignoring those who fought slavery from the beginning, was not accurate and potentially divisive.

Where to even begin? Questions of historical accuracy aside, how is this language “potentially divisive” today? It might piss off the slaveowner lobby?

What’s Hillary doing in this illustration? And why does she look so fine — is it the revealing halter top?

But anyway, this story is about Arkansas, and Hillary was the Senator from New York. Or should I say carpetbagging Senator from New York.

  • masterdebater

Who would have have expected this from a progressive state like Arkansas?

  • actor212

Um, many of the Founders were slaveowners, so what’s the beef?

  • NotthatLC

Really, it is very hard to know where to start. How about that the White House, you know, the one Obams is currently living in, was BUILT BY SLAVE LABOR. Which no one really objected to at the time. Gah. Gah. And GAH! Also.

  • MarieDeGournay

    Idiots. I say again, idiots.

Hilz looks like she’s chewing out the Harper Valley P.T.A in that picture.

Well it’s about time someone is protecting those poor long-dead slaveowners from having their feelings hurt.

I mean, I get that some people were vocally opposed to slavery, and so Are-Kansas is giving them a shoutout, but didn’t those dudes have slaves anyway?

I don’t know who’s Kansas it is, but it ‘aint Ar Kansas.

  • ManchuCandidate

Based on the whole Repub “I legislate against the thing I love” meme, I’m guessing the folks are just a little touchy about slaveowning when there is a preznit in the White (!) House who would have been considered only 4/5 of a man in the “good” old days.

    Finally, uh Greenburg? Dixiejews?

This country was founded on the backs of rich, white men.

I’d be careful about offending the slaveowner lobby, Jim. You might not be subject to them, but the Federal Student Loan Commission and Visa hold the rights to my fat ass, so I’d appreciate it if you sucked up to them like everybody else.

  • Canmon (the Inadequate)

It might upset Obama since he is a descendant of slave owners:

I think they’re also trying to push an amendment to pull over obama and check if his car’s stolen whenever he enters teh state.

  • Miller

It violates the South’s long standing attempts to pretend that slavery never EVER happened. The Civil War was about states rights/northern aggression and the founding fathers ate sunshine and shit a better form of that sunshine. Blacks moved to the south because of the weather. THE WEATHER!

The most hilarious part of that article is that Al Sharpton’s ancestors were “owned” by Strom Thurmond’s ancestors. If Thurmond’s ancestors followed the trend of slave owners love of screwing the help then it might go a long ways to explaining Sharpton.

  • SayItWithWookies

Remember the slave reparations debate where its opponents said that nobody alive now was ever a slave? Well nobody alive now has owned slaves, so y’all shut up, ’cause you can’t have it both ways.

[re=230856]ManchuCandidate[/re]: Speaking of The Reverend Sharpton, one of my suppliers told me of a 30 foot tall sculpture created by his sister of the Portuguese queen (Princess Catherine who married King Charles) to be installed on the waterfront of the East River in NY. Despite the lack of historical evidence that Queens was named after Catherine, Sharpton had the stature destroyed due to the alleged slavery connection.

    History lesson over. Sorry.

They’ll probably accept the new wording:
“Alabama sends congratulations to our new President, Barack Obama. It is truly an historic event for the occupant of the Whitehouse, once burnt down by the British, to be occupied by somebody who IS TECHNICALLY BRITISH. SHOW US YOUR REAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE, NOBAMA!”

  • populucious

Look, what do you want from Arkansas? They gave us our FIRST black president after all, and we never made all this fuss over it, asking them to put out official resolutions and whatnot. Heck, history’s probably not even gonna give them credit for that. Dag nabbit!

I love the reference to those who “fought slavery from the beginning.” They must mean Massa J, whom all Virginia school children are taught “abhorred” the institution, even though it provided him with 24/7 tail. Which he seemed to rather enjoy despite his protests that the allure of white girls was, as he put it with characteristic eloquence, “preferable to that eternal monotony, which reigns in the countenances, that immoveable veil of black which covers all the emotions of the other race[.]” Maybe he meant to say it was not his fault he could not tell slaves were not enjoying being raped and beaten. All these noble FFs “fought slavery” just until the point they got hard.

  • twowheeljunkie

[re=230816]BillyClubb[/re]: Please, Hillary is the Senator from Illinois before she grabbed her carpetbag. I have no idea how Blago didn’t figure that out, he could have appointed her to fill Barry’s seat and then when she went to work at State or whatever he could have appointed someone else. That would have been two “appointments” and we all know that he didn’t want anything in exchange for those, right? Heck he could have appointed Biden in the interim (since lord knows he doesn’t have anything else going on) and then he would have stepped down to be vice something-or-other and he gets three appointments (aka a new yacht).

  • stink, but

I would hesitate to use the term “slave-owners” when we could just maybe say “labor-borrowers.” It’s all about compromise.

  • Guppy06

Adams? Jay? Paine? Would the South have accepted a number as low as 3/5 if there weren’t some pissed off Yankees they had to compromise with? Who cares if they don’t vote, the darkies should get some representation!

Here in Fort Worth, Texas, there was a “stock show and rodeo” last weekend, so lots of cowboys came to visit from other towns. The manager of a steakhouse told me he spent Sunday night cleaning up graffiti they left in the restroom, stuff like “I don’t want a negro in the White House”, “I don’t want a black president”, an Obama hanging from a tree, “kill the first negro”, etc. Scary.

  • chascates

“the United States as a nation founded by slaveowners because the Bible says it’s OK” would have passed.

  • 2druk2phluq

There are still slave owners in Arkansas. It’s called the Arkansas Department of Corrections now. Black men are shanghaied into servitude based on the amount of money they can spend on a lawyer. The criminal justice system works as follows: For a black man to be charged with a crime is to be convicted of that crime. Once in the system their labor is free.

The State Representatives all benefit from the labor of the black slaves, because of programs in place to farm out the convicts. Not until the last good old boy Republican cock breath is buried in the ground will it be guaranteed that the broken criminal justice system can be fixed. The bigots hate all people who are different than them, color wise, sexually, religiously…
I won’t be happy until their tears never end. Everywhere, not just Arkansas.

Oops. I got real. That can be fixed:
First Publication Anywhere! It’s great you brought up this fantastic history of our Secretary of State’s private life with Bill “Horny Goat” Clinton. More people should know what life is really like in Arkansas. Had you posted the entire cover it would be clear to everyone that Bill’s mistress is right behind him on the step of the trailer.

Why the hell should Arkansas legislators complain about “a nation founded by slave owners”? Was there some guy from Arkansas involved in the founding of the U.S.? Enlighten me, please!

  • hopebong

Adams didn’t own slave. That’s gotta count for something.

  • TexasCowGirl

    [re=231241]hobospacejungle[/re]: True.

This is not suprising. We know that the wingnuts don’t like facts, even historical facts. So a declaration stating facts of any kind would be highly offensive to them.

  • chascates

    [re=231098]agitpropster[/re]: Agreed!

  • PAbitter

Obviously, no one pointed out to the good folks of Arkansas that those most opposed to slavery were probably Damnyankees?

“If you vote against this bill, you’re a Damnyankee lover!!!”

    It would have passed 16-1

  • Suds McKenzie

This is wonderful, I propose we have a debate with slave loving vs. slave hating states to decide this matter once and for all.

  • pfft..nah

You know, I’m sure a simple ‘good job’ would suffice for Obama. No need for a resolution or a run down of the history of the nation’s injustices. I would think saying ‘good job’ would be better, as opposed to saying ‘good job. there was a time when your ancestors were owned by our ancestors, and now look at you.’
