We weren't sure before but yeah, this guy hates black peopleYOU KNOW WHAT IS SO TERRIBLE? It’s this liberal political correctness! Still! Back in the golden age of “Real America,” you could run around shouting the n-word at any given black person or piss on a Chinaman for being a Chinaman or just squeeze ladies’ boobs (“Honk Honk!” you’d say) at your workplace because THIS COUNTRY HAD CHARACTER, OK? And now the liberal media “controversy” against poor GOP chairman candidate Chip Saltsman, who tried to win party allies via the tried-and-true GOP bonding method of sharing n*gger jokes, has of course made Saltsman a hero in his own white party.

Four days after news broke that the former Tennessee GOP chairman had sent a CD that included a song titled “Barack the Magic Negro” to the RNC members he is courting, some of those officials are rallying around the embattled Saltsman, with a few questioning whether the national media and his opponents are piling on.

“When I heard about the story I had to figure out what was going on for myself,” said Mark Ellis, the chairman of the Maine Republican Party. “When I found out what this was about I had to ask, ‘boy, what’s the big deal here?’ because there wasn’t any.”

Alabama Republican committeeman Paul Reynolds said the fact the Saltsman sent him a CD with the song on it “didn’t bother me one bit.”

“Chip probably could have thought it through a bit more, but he was doing everyone a favor by giving us a gift,” he said. “This is just people looking for something to make an issue of.”

That’s exactly what it is, slaveowner Paul Reynolds! We’re reading about it in Politico after all! But still, the issue has been made, and current RNC chairman Mike Duncan released this very nice, astute statement after the Controversy erupted:

The day after the story was first reported by The Hill, RNC Chairman Mike Duncan issued a statement expressing disgust over the song.

“The 2008 election was a wake-up call for Republicans to reach out and bring more people into our party,” said Duncan, who is seeking reelection to his post. “I am shocked and appalled that anyone would think this is appropriate as it clearly does not move us in the right direction.”

Naturally the GOP read this statement and decided to kill Mike Duncan and his family:

Not everyone is so sure, with some RNC members contending that Anuzis and Duncan may have actually hurt their candidacies with their responses.

“Those are two guys who just eliminated themselves from this race for jumping all over Chip on this,” one committee member told Politico. “Mike Duncan is a nice guy, but he screwed up big time by pandering to the national press on this.”

The Republican Party: America’s next “Big Tent!”

‘Magic Negro’ flap might help Saltsman [Politico]

With Saltsman running an RNC that’s running Palin as a Presidential candidate, the next election is going to be awesome! …-ly hilarious. Can we please bring back Bob Dole to be the VP candidate? Pretty please?

I can understand the cracker from Alabama thnking this was no big deal, but the guy from Maine?

Now, I’ve been to Maine…spent a week there one day…and while it’s not exactly, errrr, diverse, there seemed to me to be an air of tolerance and education commensurate with its geographical location in the Northeast.

Is this guy an import from Mississippi?

So I try to help get Chip elected-I go to the Maryland state GOP website- planning to use a good Republican name like Bitsy Tripper Palin – and suggest the State GOp reps vote for Chipper and find that Maryland is supporting Michael Steele. Can’t they see that Chip is the man!!

He looks like George Allen’s fat twin. And acts like his twin. We sent that SOB packing in Virginia, and lets just hope the GOP continues to let these jackasses run their show. The internet is like DDT to these racist roaches. The Republicans will become the party of Texas, Mississippi, and the offices of the Wall Street Journal.

Bruno December 30, 2008 at 11:26 am

At this point, the best hope the GOP has is to start a selective breeding program. This is the only way they’ll get enough whities. It will of course require every white man getting more than one white ‘wife’ and to start inpregnations at the age of 14.

The other positive side effect will be lots of single non-white men to have gay buttsecks with.

You know a political party has it going on and is primed to win elections when they’re about to choose a leader based on who distributed the most racist novelty tune in an attempt to win over voters. Isn’t that how the Dean won the DNC job? With his funny rap about dumb Polish people and thieving Italians?

So… judging by the popularity of this song among Republicans, it’s safe to say that Ken Blackwell and Michael Steele don’t have a future in national Republican politics? Apart from standing outside the Republican convention hall dressed as jockeys, of course…

All they want is to provoke a reaction from Obama, so they can characterize him as an “angry black man.” Therefore Obama will be too-clever-by-half and refuse to take the bait, effectively coming across as a pussy who will put up with any amount of racist abuse. And while everybody is running around wondering if “parody” and “satire” count as racism, and whether the President will tolerate being called a “magic negro” without so much as registering an opinion on the subject, the policy chiefs at the GOP will be free to run around in secret ripping people off and sucking (or getting sucked by) anyone and anything they so choose. And nobody will be the wiser.

God I love this party. I don’t care if the joke is two years old, during the election I always wished to see Michael Richards on TV attacking Obama and supporting McCain; then he’d be asked why he’s supporting McCain, Richards would stammer, pause, and say “why does that matter?” or “none of your business.”

Palin-Plumber2012 December 30, 2008 at 12:57 pm

[re=206552]finallyhappy[/re]: Michael Steele? The magic negro?

WIDTAP December 30, 2008 at 12:59 pm

[re=206674]TroutSavant[/re]: So let me get the reasoning straight:

When the man is black, he is a “magic negro”.
When he is white and as Republican as they get he is “The Teflon President”.

Now is it inherently unfair for the black guy to be “Teflon” because he must be “magic” (Which of course would not be racist at all would it? They all have a little voodoo in them, don’t they?) or is your argument that “negro” no longer stirs up racial overtones in the post election world?

Or would a singular solution, such as “The majority American People tend to ignore the faults of the politician whose policies they prefer” tend to explain both cases with having to appeal to unproven theories of white guilt, racial favoritism or a conspiratorial media bias?

Occam’s razors a bitch, huh?

Gorillionaire December 30, 2008 at 12:59 pm

His hair looks like a hat that is too small for his fat head.

Palin-Plumber2012 December 30, 2008 at 1:02 pm

One more thing – “The 2008 election was a wake-up call for Republicans to reach out and bring more people into our party,” said Duncan, who is seeking reelection to his post. “I am shocked and appalled that anyone would think this is appropriate as it clearly does not move us in the right direction.”

Heh I LOVE how this guy apparently thinks that up until the 2008 election, because the Republicans tried to play to whites only it was OK to mock blacks in song. Now that black peoples’ votes matter, in 2008, it is no longer appropriate to continue openly distributing racist jokes to Republican leaders and officials.

finallyhappy December 30, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Cmon, I’m glad there are Republicans supporting this guy, and you are too! He is the person I want to head the RNC.if you can find a way to do it(using a real name- just ot your own)- write to your state GOP office and tell them to support Chip- that the media that destroyed the lovely Sarah Palin’s chances are the ones trying to destroy this upright citizen.

[re=206699]Palin-Plumber2012[/re]: I’m pretty sure he is not magic.

GreyPanter December 30, 2008 at 1:05 pm

[re=206674]TroutSavant[/re]: Counter argument: According to Wikipedia, “Negro is a term referring to people of Black African ancestry. Prior to the shift in the lexicon of American and worldwide classification of race and ethnicity in the late 1960s, the appellation was accepted as a normal neutral formal term both by those of Black African descent as well as non-African blacks. Now it is often considered an ethnic slur[1][2][3] although the term is considered archaic and is not common as a racist slur. ” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negro). Further, the singer is white and uses a classic racist version of African-American speech (e.g. “dat” for “that”, or “dey” for they).

That said, the lyrics are not so bad, and are well within the bounds of our right to freedom of speech. I think the point is more that a person aspiring to national prominence would think that disseminating the material would enhance his position in the Repub party.

Another story that Republicans remain racist ain’t exactly big headlines…so, no, the liberal media isn’t piling on.

TroutSavant December 30, 2008 at 1:24 pm

But it’s clear that Obama also is running for an equally important unelected office, in the province of the popular imagination — the “Magic Negro.”
….
He’s there to assuage white “guilt”
….
The only mud that momentarily stuck was criticism (white and black alike) concerning Obama’s alleged “inauthenticty,” as compared to such sterling examples of “genuine” blackness as Al Sharpton and Snoop Dogg. Speaking as an African American whose last name has led to his racial “credentials” being challenged — often several times a day — I know how pesky this sort of thing can be.
….
Obama’s fame right now has little to do with his political record or what he’s written in his two (count ‘em) books, or even what he’s actually said in those stem-winders.

Ehrenstein Core arguments:
- Obama’s only value is to assuage white guilt.
- The shit don’t stick to him and no one in “the media” asks pesky question.
- His writing and speeches are uninspiring.

Bullshit.

How about people were just sick and tired of bad governance and Obama was the first and best to the message of Change?
How about Economy is in serious trouble; there’s been no end in site for two concurrent wars and Obama was the first to appeal to American optimism during a crisis since FDR?

How about the turnout at his “stem winder” speeches and the exit polling during the election show each of Ehrenstein’s proposals to have no basis in fact.

How about you quit the trolling and take this crap back to Foxnews?

““Those are two guys who just eliminated themselves from this race for jumping all over Chip on this,” one committee member told Politico. “Mike Duncan is a nice guy, but he screwed up big time by pandering to the national press on this.”

Is there no Republican left who refuses to race to the bottom?

HuskyMescan December 30, 2008 at 1:45 pm

[re=206747]TroutSavant[/re]: Hahaha, Ok , there’s not a racist trace in it at all. Right.

Republicans are racist. Paul Shanklin and Rush Limbaugh are notorious for using articles and quotes like that to drive their racist “parodies.” Apologists/concern trolls like yourself also use the excuse that Rush’s production manager is black.

And wait for the Rush and ditto-head response: “blacks have no sense of humor” Fuck you, it’s racist, pure and simple.

[re=206747]TroutSavant[/re]: “GreyPanter: I understand that the term is offensive. My point is that the song quotes a LATimes article which picks up the term “magic negro” — a term invented, or at least popularized by Spike Lee — to illustrate its suggestion that whites appreciate a black man when he appears non-threatening.”

Your point is made absolutely moot by context. Rush Limbaugh is using “magic negro” to nullify the success and ability of a black man and turn him into a buffoon, to lessen him and his victory. Alternately, he’s claiming that Obama is part white and therefore “safe by being not black” and therefore this was not a victory for black america, which is equally as racist.

Your understanding of this issue is shallow and makes all sorts of unnecessary excuses and concessions.

…to which Ehrenstein, and you by your “prove it wrong” challenge, attribute without evidence as the voting motive to a significant portion of the US electorate.

Oh but I forget, five thirty eight and all the major polling were always in the bag for Obama, weren’t they. We need to trash the data and go with whatever idea Ehrenstein can quote from a black person.

Hey, Spike Lee also referenced minstrelsy in his movies, time for all RNC leaders to come out in blackface.

Kev-O-Tron December 30, 2008 at 1:50 pm

[re=206770]WIDTAP[/re]: okay okay okay. I didn’t read that whole article but I think what’s worth noting is that Rush used this song because it appealed to him and his listeners on a really base and crass level. If the title of the song were “Barack the white guilt lifter” (?) and it was set to “Ride of the Valkyries” nobody would care regardless of how funny or poignant it was. I don’t think Limbaugh’s listeners are generally clever enough to understand the satire anyways. They just like it because he says “negro” (guffaw!) and they recognize the tune.

While the “white guilt” angle may carry some water (I’m sure some idiot voted for him because he’s black) It’s way overplayed and given too much credit. The whole thing is just emblematic of how out of touch and clueless the GOP is.

Rampette December 30, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Maybe the best way for RNC members to evaluate Chip Saltsman is to review his detailed, multi-page, 3,644-word “Plan for Republican Victory” on his RNC campaign website at http://www.chipsaltsman.com

This is Chip’s “plan to execute a campaign for Republicans to recapture leadership on the American political scene.”

Hmm. Chippy’s Plan includes eleven LONG paragraphs about how the RNC should reach out to Latino and young voters —
but NOT ONE SINGLE WORD about black voters or reachin’ out to them…
and also, NOT ONE SINGLE WORD about women voters or reachin’ out to them.

Hmm. It looks like Ol’ Chippy has already written off any hope of addin’ black voters or women to his Party — so, it really doesn’t matter to Chippy that he sent all the RNC members a Christmas CD with his grinnin’ face next to four ugly, song titles.

Dr. Bill Frist praises Chippy as a “thoughtful tactician for Republicans nationwide.” I reckon we”ll see how this Chip-tactic plays out in the short term when the RNC members cast their votes in January —
and in the long term, when Americans cast their votes in future elections.

Maus December 30, 2008 at 1:58 pm

[re=206796]Kev-O-Tron[/re]: “They just like it because he says “negro” (guffaw!) and they recognize the tune.”

Don’t forget that the subliterate minstrel-voice, directly tied to the song’s use of “negro”, as if we wouldn’t understand that they’re singing about blacks if they didn’t make the voice sound stupid and ebonics-ladened in some manner.

“While the “white guilt” angle may carry some water (I’m sure some idiot voted for him because he’s black) It’s way overplayed and given too much credit.”

For every “white guilt” voter there’s a hundred who voted for “anybody but the colored”, but apparently not admitting to that is the kind of “good political correctness” that the RNC follows.

[re=206770]WIDTAP[/re]: Look, I voted for Obama, and I voted for him because I generally agree with his liberal Democratic platform. I’d love it if he were more to the left, in fact. I’m not suggesting that I believe any of Ehrenstein’s points are correct, I just found it to be an interesting view. Notably, the article was written soon after Obama announced his candidacy — a point when it would be valid to say the average person knew less about his platform or record and was probably viewing him more superficially. Certainly for Saltsman to be apparently supporting Ehrenstein’s position at this point comes off as, at the very least, in bad taste.

totoro December 30, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Um, for those of you just tuning into the United States of America and hurriedly informing us that “magical negro” is an well-known term of art used by major black people such as Spike Lee and wry white people everywhere, let me just lead you through an interesting thought experiment:

Aunt Jemima is a well known smiley-faced black lady on the side of a pancake mix box, bought by millions of hungry folk of all the colors of the rainbow. Even though General Mills took the handkerchief off her head in the 80s and shrunk down her lips a little, I would suggest that if you were to call the next middle aged black woman you see Aunt Jemima that this would not work out for you very well, unless you enjoy being fired/sued/punched in the face.

If you think the same thing would not and should not happen with that totally harmless and much trafficked magical negro sobriquet, you are a serious danger to yourself and whoever is unfortunate enough to employ you. And the “I was just quoting 2 Live Crew, Apocalypse Now, the LA Times, or whatever” defense is just more laffs for the lawyers reading your deposition transcript.

Maus December 30, 2008 at 2:06 pm

“Notably, the article was written soon after Obama announced his candidacy — a point when it would be valid to say the average person knew less about his platform or record and was probably viewing him more superficially.”

“The average person” views all politics superficially. The only thing that matters here is that Barack Obama IS beyond a doubt qualified.

The media is generally terrible, but regurgitating the GOP talking points about “liberal bias” causing their massive failure marks you as a gullible dolt regardless of whether you voted for Obama or not.

TroutSavant December 30, 2008 at 2:08 pm

[re=206788]WIDTAP[/re]: Spike Lee intended the term to be ironic, yes, and I think Ehrenstein is using it in the same way. Whether that irony translated to Rush and his listeners I highly doubt. Nuance is undoubtedly lost on them.

“to illustrate its suggestion…”

I used ‘its suggestion’ to specify that this is not my opinion, its Ehrenstein’s opinion.

Sorry if I’ve expressed myself badly. I will now be eaten alive by the Wonkette commentariat…

[re=206824]totoro[/re]: OK, fine. Point taken.

“Spike Lee intended the term to be ironic, yes, and I think Ehrenstein is using it in the same way. Whether that irony translated to Rush and his listeners I highly doubt. Nuance is undoubtedly lost on them.”

That’s the nature of humor. Again, the GOP and Rush Limbaugh have gone out of their way to lessen Obama’s education, his ability as an orator, and they have assaulted his character without mercy.

Have you sat down and listened to the song?

Have you ever listened to a minstrel show, or at least heard racist caricatures of smart, powerful black men?

Using a stupid voice to “ebonify” educated black people is pathetically racist, whether it’s “just a joke” or not.

Back to the nature of humor, even if the prior statements were off and untrue, what separates racist jokes from “black humor” IS THE NUANCE. It’s the knowing that deep down, the storyteller knows that the people are good, and smart, and capable, and that really things are not as the joke states.

This is mean-spirited passive-aggressive cowardice under the guise of “humor”.

“I will now be eaten alive by the Wonkette commentariat…”

As well you deserve, but feel free to say the same things you say here at cocktail parties and family gatherings, so you become “that guy” :)

I haven’t seen the full lyrics to the song that was inspired by it, but if it’s in the same vein as the article, I don’t think it’s racist.

The song is not in the same vein as the article.

David Ehrenstein (who identifies as black) was making the point that some racist white people love Obama because they see him as fitting the Hollywood “Magic Negro” stereotype.

Paul Shanklin was making the point that Al Sharpton hates Barack Obama for being more of an Uncle Tom than he is.

Ehrenstein was criticizing white racism.

Shanklin was perpetuating white racism by portraying black politicians as infighting, ignorant buffoons.

HOW ARE YOU NOT GETTING THIS?

IceCreamEmpress December 30, 2008 at 2:46 pm

PS: I thought Ehrenstein’s article was silly. But not racist against his fellow black people.

This reminds me of something that happened in Montana’s GOP-controlled state legislature a couple years ago. Republicans defeated some proposed hate crime legislation to protect gays and lesbians because, they said, passing the legislation would violate freedom of religion guarantees for religious people who believe gays are sinful and immoral.
Stay classy, GOP.

S.Luggo December 30, 2008 at 4:35 pm

The next Republican CD will be a parody of the songs of Stephen Foster. References to Barry will appear in every tune, including the gently mirthful, “Way Down Upon the Chicago River”. Thus, the humor will be inoffensive and “light-hearted” in the same way that the “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” might be seen as a repository of rib-tickling humor. But the grumpy liberal establishment be upset by the CD anyway, also.
