So Barack Obama, in the spirit of Christian charity and forgiveness, invited Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at his inaugural. (Rick Warren is the man who humiliated Barack Obama by forcing him to admit publicly that he is not a professional abortionist. Also Rick Warren hates the gays, who hate him back.) Now a series of “talking points” have surfaced, in the inbox of Huffington Post supersleuth Sam Stein, defensively defending Obama’s decision to give this goateed turd a speaking spot.
Basically, the Obama people have to argue that they’re being “inclusive” by giving a platform to this terrible weenie, and also they invited a token liberal pastor as well.
• This will be the most open, accessible, and inclusive Inauguration in American history.
• In keeping with the spirit of unity and common purpose this Inauguration will reflect, the President-elect and Vice President-elect have chosen some of the world’s most gifted artists and people with broad appeal to participate in the inaugural ceremonies.
• Pastor Rick Warren has a long history of activism on behalf of the disadvantaged and the downtrodden. He’s devoted his life to performing good works for the poor and leads the evangelical movement in addressing the global HIV/AIDS crisis. In fact, the President-elect recently addressed Rick Warren’s Saddleback Civil Forum on Global Health to salute Warren’s leadership in the struggle against HIV/AIDS and pledge his support to the effort in the years ahead.
• The President-elect disagrees with Pastor Warren on issues that affect the LGBT community. They disagree on other issues as well. But what’s important is that they agree on many issues vital to the pursuit of social justice, including poverty relief and moving toward a sustainable planet; and they share a commitment to renewing America’s promise by expanding opportunity at home and restoring our moral leadership abroad.
• As he’s said again and again, the President-elect is committed to bringing together all sides of the faith discussion in search of common ground. That’s the only way we’ll be able to unite this country with the resolve and common purpose necessary to solve the challenges we face.
• The Inauguration will also involve Reverend Joseph Lowery, who will be delivering the official benediction at the Inauguration. Reverend Lowery is a giant of the civil rights movement who boasts a proudly progressive record on LGBT issues. He has been a leader in the struggle for civil rights for all Americans, gay or straight.
• And for the very first time, there will be a group representing the interests of LGBT Americans participating in the Inaugural Parade.
Remember how Bill Clinton had a very “inclusive” inauguration, with Maya Angelou and snake-charmers and NAMBLA all doing peyote and dancing around Ronald Reagan’s funeral pyre? That’s basically what Obama’s inauguration will be like, only with a diverse array of hairfaced hobbit cretins rubbing their nipples while they fantasize about gay marrying Jesus.
Obama’s Talking Points On Rick Warren [Huffington Post]

Grand Invocator is not a tenure-track position.
Okay, have Warren backed up by the Lavender Light LGBT Gospel Choir of Harlem.
If I hate him does that make me gay? I pretty much hate everybody; it’s a grumpy thing.
well, at least there will be fights. name calling and shoe throwing, one Hopes.
What’s with the alt-text? Did Candlejack come fo
I personally won’t be happy until he gets a pastor from a marihuana church to give the invocation.
There is no valid excuse for inviting this right wing jerk to do the invocation.
By doing so, Hopey gives him a de facto endorsement.
The evangelical strategy for “poverty relief”: Let them eat Jesus.
[re=202055]kapish[/re]: “I’m Barack Obama and I approve this goateed turd.”
Breaking news!
Lizard People = Real Person
Brett Farve = Fake Person
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/
I’m hoping that the Revererend Wright parachutes on stage just as Rick “Pus-Driven Life” Warren is about to give the invocation, and then he says “THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MINE, BITCHES” and starts spraying machine gun fire. Then he and Hopey make up over Warrens bullet-riddled corpse and they start handing out guns to the crowd from big ass crates marked USSR and “Fidel Forever.” The end.
Barry totes saw Wonkette yesterday and wuz all “OHS NOES THEY ARE BUILDING RANKS AGAINST MEES,” so he put together his best men and created this lovely tail of agreements, disagreements and harmony.
‘diverse array of hairfaced hobbit cretins rubbing their nipples while they fantasize about gay marrying Jesus.’
Actually, Susan Powter’s restraining order explicitly prohibits her from traveling East of the Michigan Women’s Festival.
If Rick Warren offers the invocation, will Fred Phelps deliver the benediction?
Seriously, “liberals” are really fucking stupid sometimes.
You can’t bitch about wanting an inclusive society, by wanting and HOPEing that someone who’s views you don’t like is EXCLUDED. It is ironic. And also dumb.
It doesn’t matter that they have Reverend Rot-Gut has dim-witted, mouth-breathing views. The point is, if you don’t include/tolerate/accept all opinions, you’re just as large a fucking dingus as the asshats on the other side.
The end.
[re=202051]tiny mexican[/re]: It is a quotes-within-quotes sort of problem, kind of fixed now.
[re=202094]magic titty[/re]: OH MY GODZ A CLOSETED CONSERVATIVE!
“Shut up gays, Warren considers fights against everything you want and doesn’t want you to have rights, but he doesn’t want you to die of AIDS. So uhhhh…..keep your grubby gay mitts off of Barry’s Golden Jubilee, he’s trying to appeal to people who will never vote for him.”
http://thesebastards.blogspot.com/
This Obama feller is going to ruin everything. Just you watch!
Fine they can “disagree” on issues. Now give me All of my fucking rights.
Oh thank God Pastor Rick is here to defend the disadvantaged and the downtrodden, because the damn libtards don’t care about those guys!
Way to use your bully pulpit, Obama.
[re=202094]magic titty[/re]: Sorry – inc1usivess doesn’t include asshats. That’s dumb relativism being it’s dumb, illogical self. If I thought Obama was a relativist, I wouldn’t have voted for him. Inclusiveness isn’t about not making judgments, it’s about making the right ones with respect to humanity. Anyone who includes inhumanity with humanity is just going to be running in useless circles all day. There. Sermon over.
Is Hopey trying to co-opt all the rightwing nut jobs? So they will be his friends and can no longer attack him? otherwise wtf is he up to?
[re=202098]loquaciousmusic[/re]: Haha. I’m a borderline anarchist (or Antichrist – whichever), according to an internet quiz.
But I really wish some of my fellow liberals would understand they undermine their alleged worldview when complaining about shit like this.
[re=202094]magic titty[/re]: well said. I always thought progressive meant inclusive not divisive.
[re=202055]kapish[/re]: On the bright side, there’s the possibility that a lot of fake-tanned followers of Vending-Machine-Jesus are pissed that Warren appears to be endorsing Obama.
[re=202121]magic titty[/re]: [re=202124]Ilikepigeons[/re]: It’s always fun when a member of the majority tells people in a minority how to feel. It’s one of my favourite things ever. Like when all those white folk were surprised that all those negroes didn’t want their own section at the back of the bus or their very own water fountains. What could possibly be the problem with that?
[re=202132]Nigerian Business Executive[/re]: Bingo.
[re=202117]slithytoves[/re]: So what you’re saying is there are no asshats on the left? Is this the point you’re making? Because I could give you the names of plenty, if you were short a few.
Extremism to the degree of shutting out views (even ass-backwards and gay (ha!) views like Reverend Warren’s) serve only a culture that is saccharine, static, and Stalinist.
It is fucking dumb. And this asshole reverend speaking at the inauguration will not stop us from helping gay Americans get the right to vote – it isn’t even relevant to anything.
The last time I checked, the best way to help curb intolerant views was to include that person or persons in the dialogue, so they can better understand what they’ve been shunning.
And lastly, if you didn’t think Obama was a politician, you’re a hope-starved loon shouldn’t have voted at all.
End.
Remember how Bill Clinton had a very “inclusive” inauguration, with Maya Angelou and snake-charmers and NAMBLA all doing peyote and dancing around Ronald Reagan’s funeral pyre?
Clinton did his inauguration from Burning Man?
Even if Warren didn’t have such repugnant beliefs, his choice is so utterly banal. It’s like the Oprahization of the inauguration.
[re=202121]magic titty[/re]: MT, you’re right. As President, Obama will have to communicate with all kinds of people.
It’s ironic to see non-believers caring so much about an invocation! A suggestion is to disregard all the words between “Dearly beloved” and “amen”, perhaps while we reflect on Pascal’s Wager.
I’m sure this has been covered ad nauseum already, but I just need to assert my membership in a club that titters whenever this dude is mentioned. A goatteed wannabe dandy who uses his pulpit at Saddleback Church to warn the younguns about the dangers involved in catching teh gay? Methinks ol’ Ricky-Dicky’s a wee bit tricky.
[re=202141]magic titty[/re]: Dim witty – I didn’t say Obama wasn’t a politican, I said he wasn’t a “relativist;” he may be a pragmatist, I hope he is, but a relativist is a far more dangerously stupid animal. Furthermore, I didn’t say there were no asshats on the left, and those who are are not included in my happy unicorn community. Sheesh. READ. You’re reacting to your ideas, not mine. Happy Solstice!
PS, having any asshole speak at such a historical and public moment means a lot! (Hence the people being all upset, and such.)
I say let’s give Rick MORE COWBELL!!!!! Let’s help those who will be at the inauguration and the fag band be armed with cow bells and air horns and let freedom ring and toot throughout Warren’s hate filled invocation of his hateful god. Let the band be decked with signs and furor as they march past Mr. Obama’s reviewing stand.
Let’s show Mr. Obama that the next four years are going to be exactly like this if he continues to ‘down low’ the gays.
BTW, how many of us knew this would happen? My hand is up.
[re=202141]magic titty[/re]: I think this is an inauguration, not a dialogue.
Did you watch Bush’s inaugurations looking for signs of inclusion?
So January is Turd Unity month. So what?
[re=202132]Nigerian Business Executive[/re]: Uhh, what minority/majority point are you trying to make?
Who represents the majority in this discussion? Obama? Warren? Me (cuz, I’m, you know, a Negro too).
None of your statement makes sense.
I loathe Warren’s worldview. But to say i’m outraged because he’s gonna say some shit about God at the inauguration is silly. I hate religion, but I’m not jumping out of my seat because people will be praying at the fucking thing.
And Barry himself said he believes marriage is between a man and a woman. Where was your outrage then?
Eh, whatever. This dicussion now bores me.
[re=202156]slithytoves[/re]: Nice rhyming. Anyway, there are plenty of people upset OBAMA is speaking at the inauguration. They happen to think he’s an asshole and an ACORN. I happen to think them assholes. The point is dissent is not going away because our precious Hopey got elected. This absurd overreaction is missing the point of what it’s suppose to mean to be a ‘liberal’.
[re=202165]DemmeFatale[/re]: So…he should be like Bush? Ok. Progress.
[re=202141]magic titty[/re]:
Hang on, did I break the law when I voted? Should I have shown my gay card so I could get disenfranchised?
Pretty sure gay people can already vote.
[re=202170]magic titty[/re]: Aaaw. We were all hoping for more enlightenment on what a heterosexual male thinks we should think about Obama’s symbolic endorsement of a known hater. Remember, much of Obama’s appeals has been built on symbolism, so a symbolic gesture legitimizing someone who actively campaigned to take away rights on the very same day that Obama was elected sounds like change Ted Haggard believes in.
It doesn’t strike you as offensive that Obama’s willing to forgo people who worked tooth and nail to get him elected to curry favour with people who’d never vote for him in a million years? I have a right to my disappointment and my right to voice it. Other rights, apparently, are negotiable.
[re=202185]friendlynerd[/re]: seriously, what the hell are you talking about? I’m a rank and file new york leftist douchebag highly in favor of same sex rights.
so again I ask, wtf are you talking about?
See, we live in a place. This place is full of people with dissenting opinions. Even ones we don’t like. Sadly, they’re not going away. So get over it. Work for your cause. It is the same cause as mine. And guess what – our side will win.
Also – stop putting words and/or opinions in my mouth. It is annoying.
HOPEY – “Hello downtrodden Gay persons! I know I’m not too keen on this whole Gay thing, but I’ll take your contributions and votes anyway! Meet my friend, the Rev!”
REV – “Hello faggot!”
HOPEY – “See! We can all agree to disagree!”
[re=202196]magic titty[/re]: You typed “vote” when you meant “marry.”
[re=202196]magic titty[/re]: Hey, let’s ALL stop putting words and/or opinions in each other’s mouths!
(Ooo, sounds dirty.)
magic titty: you’re right, of course, except for one thing: Warren isn’t objectionable because he’s a right-wing evangelical, he’s objectionable because he’s a dick.
[re=202193]Nigerian Business Executive[/re]: Dude, you really think he’s forgoing people who helped him get elected by having some asshole preacher talk at his inauguration? You really believe that? Barack Obama (on the record) is opposed to same sex marriage. Why the fuck did you support him for president? He didn’t run on the gay marriage platform. He ran on a progressive platform that will one day include making gay marriage legal and a non-issue.
By your measure, the fact that this guy is (or anyone) preaching and praying should disaffect me because I’m an atheist and in his eyes I will burn eternally in hell.
Added to which, I can’t tell you how badly you’re distorting what my original point was. I rule this discussion over – let’s agree to not really be disagreeing, yet still not really understanding what the other person is saying – Magic Titty.
[re=202206]AllHat[/re]: word.
[re=202132]Nigerian Business Executive[/re]: Where the hell have you been? Haven’t see you around these parts in a while…
I’m stil hoping for a Ted Haggard or even a Jim Bakker(remember Jessica Hahn)like fall.
[re=202203]DemmeFatale[/re]: Dammitall. You are right. I is the stupid. And teh gay. Apologies.
[re=202094]magic titty[/re]: That’s just crazy enough to make sense. Part of me is like go Barry, go with being all inclusive and reaching out to the Jeebus lovers. Unfortunately, the other part of me is like fuck the fucking haters. So I’m just going to move on be excited for all those highway building jobs that I can apply for.
[re=202193]Nigerian Business Executive[/re]: “It doesn’t strike you as offensive that [insert politician]‘s willing to forgo people who worked tooth and nail to get [him/her] elected to curry favour with people who’d never vote for [him/her] in a million years?”
Yeah, I think that’s about right.
So the sheer gayiety of having a poetry reading at the inauguration is supposed to cancel out Warren’s sleezy Jeebusness? Fuck that. And people like Warren only “help” people with HIV/AIDS because they get their rocks out by watching people die horribly because the Lord hates them.
Dammit, as a lesbian type woman, I don’t know what offends me more, his homophobia or his mysogi, mysogeny, mysinogy, oh, fuck it… women hating. I’m so confused and gay.
We’re having a delightful snow day here in Seattle. I’m only in the office for a few hours. I got stoned on the roof with my friend before work this morning and we had a very gay moment playing in the fresh snow. I am in the best mood right now and won’t be commenting on this because I want to bite Rick Warren in the fucking face.
[re=202196]magic titty[/re]:
Copied and pasted di-fucking-rectly from your post:
“And this asshole reverend speaking at the inauguration will not stop us from helping gay Americans get the right to vote”
It was kind of funny, but your unwillingness to read your own words and you over-the-top response killed the humor.
[re=202258]friendlynerd[/re]: i know. i felt bad. jesus hates me.
still friends?
[re=202265]magic titty[/re]:
Jesus hates us all. Kissed, made up, forgotten.
I just hope Barry makes sure Warren’s prayer is not too Jesusy.
Oh that’s all bullshit. Why should anyone be inclusive of Rick Warren when Rick Warren refuses to include others? Screw that guy.
Honestly, though, other than him being liberal and not actively seeking to dismantle gay rights, there’s been very little proof that Obama is going to do much for gays. We like him, but he’s pretty nowhere when it comes to the cause.
Conclusive proof of the non-existence of Immortal Jebus #184: Rick Warren is not struck by lightning every eleven seconds.
If we’re being all ‘inclusive’ where is NAMBLA and the American Nazi Party in the inaugural?
Oh yeah, the outgoing party.
Well, this just goes to show why I voted for Cynthia McKinney. Obama has now surrounded himself with people who are largely responsible for the economic mess we’re in (Larry Summers ["The third world is vastly underpolluted and the economic behind dumping a load of toxic waste in the lowest wage country is impeccable"], Timothy Geithner [set up forced sale of Bear Stearnes, very influential in bailing out AIG), and Paul Volcker [remember PATCO? Yeah, he sided with Reagan on that one…and his raising of the interest rates in the early 80′s led to 10% unemployment).
So is it really surprising that he now is choosing to continue to show that he is deeply conservative on social issues as well, despite rhetoric to the contrary? It’s great that he inspired a lot of people, but it’s unforunate if those folks actually believe that he’ll do anything to move gay rights forward. I doubt that he’ll do much to end the economic crisis, the wars, or really to do much of anything to move America more left than it is now. Partly because he can’t, partly because he’s surrounded himself with neolib cronies who defend the old order. If you want the gay rights movement to go anywhere, it has to be driven by a core of activists who are pissed off enough that they’re not going to just sit back and take this kind of crap. Alas, most of the gay guys I know are too busy doing a bump of crystal at the baths or deciding to assimilate and become just like the breeders (house, car, kids, great job)….or both. Lesbians are a different story, but they’re so busy with potlucks that it would be amazing if they did much more than the gay guys.
And yeah, I’m gay myself and I will stand behind what I say, so don’t accuse me of being a troll.
The answer? http://www.socialistworker.org
Marxists actually have a way forward that doesn’t involve pandering to religion, continuing the cycle of homophobia, sexism and racism, and the exploitation of workers. Too bad “socialist” is still a four-letter word among liberals. Somoeone needed to say this, so there. This is my first comment, and generally I think Wonkette is right on….but in this case someone needed to say “Hey, Obama, you’re acting like a Republican again.” Since no one else did, I decided to say it.
[re=202052]Serolf Divad[/re]: I love you!
“Why should anyone be inclusive of Rick Warren when Rick Warren refuses to include others?”
I think Jesus said that, too.
Oh. He actually said:
“Why should i stop throwing rocks at that dood’s house if he refuses to stop throwing rocks at my house because I refuse to stop throwing them at his house because …”
Theology is a bitch.
[re=202332]mikeyboypdx[/re]: Oh fuck. A commie troll.
[re=202338]Aquannissiwamissoo[/re]:
We need more commies in this world.
You guys can try to talk me down as much as you want, but I watched that movie Crash – I know how this works. When a white Prez picks some black preacher, it’s either tokenism or he’s pandering to the po’ masses. Whenever a Black Prez picks a white guy, he’s selling out. Period.
Moving on.
I will only forgive Obama if they kiss.
[re=202117]slithytoves[/re]: I agree with you.
Relativism has almost killed the left’s ability to mobilize and act.
Abortion may be morally wrong [maybe] but giving a woman sovereignty over her body is definitely morally right. You can bring people with opposing views together to discuss this ambiguity, perhaps.
Not so with gay marriage. It is morally right to allow two people who love each other to be together in a socially- and politically-sanctioned union. Opposition to these unions is based in fear, loathing and disgust and is, ultimately, immoral. People trapped by this fear need to be led out of the darkness. Period. Warren & his ilk don’t bring a “different” view on this issue; they are simply wrong. Let’s have a president who will stand up against relativism.
I’m not throwing Barry out. I love him and I will watch how all this plays out. But I’m disappointed and have sent a change.gov email, too, along with about a billion other whiners. He needs us to stay motivated and keep fighting.
This was a dumb mistake, one of the view he’s made. I bet he knows it.
Fuck B.O. He’s no friend to gay people. Just another homophobic negro. They’re all alike.
[re=202332]mikeyboypdx[/re]: You voted for Cynthia McKinney…that’s funny enough to not need any other comments.
Wow, incisive Magic Titty argument aside, I’m just wondering about the photo: is Obama looking for which pocket has the lollipop…?
[re=202375]NotNotLickingToads[/re]: I LOL-ed. Stupid me thought his whole comment as tongue-in-cheek.
[re=202375]NotNotLickingToads[/re]: I love how you seem to like attacking the fact that I voted for McKinney…but have no reply to the rest of my argument? Hm.
[re=202374]Makeithurt[/re]: So he’s a homophobe now? Also, fighting bigotry with bigotry is truly a progressive approach.
[re=202390]mikeyboypdx[/re]: Hold on, I’m still laughing.
[re=202373]stellabella[/re]: “Opposition to these unions is based in fear, loathing and disgust and is, ultimately, immoral. People trapped by this fear need to be led out of the darkness. Period. Warren & his ilk don’t bring a ‘different’ view on this issue; they are simply wrong. Let’s have a president who will stand up against relativism.”
Aw, man. Fluctuating morality is what made the left fun to hang out with.
Don’t tell me you guys are now clinging to moral absolutism. What’s next? Guns and religion?
lewl. seriously, guys, it’s not funny. Let’s go back to being hedonists.
[re=202196]magic titty[/re]: “Also – stop putting words and/or opinions in my mouth. It is annoying.”
I call shenanigans. No one who can spell that well could be so obtuse except on purpose. *Plonk*
[re=202390]mikeyboypdx[/re]:
You may not have noticed but this is primarily a humor site, and Cynthia McKinney is fucking hilarious.
I am much more disappointed and upset that Obama doesn’t support gay marriage himself than I am that he’s going to have some fat homophobe say a prayer for the country before the fascist from the Supreme Court swears him in.
For weeks now I’ve been watching the Dems decend into their usual post election circular firing squad even though we won big and its just become absurd- boohoo! so and so doesn’t have the orthodox finger in the eye view of the opposition we demand therefore all hope is lost and nothing will change- gee you know what that sounds like? a bunch of fucking republicans
I disagree with Rick Warren most things (but he is good on the environment) but I guarantee that who ever they picked would annoy some part of the coalition of the hoping. Given the fact that there is going to be a prayer at the inauguration Would you all prefer he invited pope benidict XXV or whatever they’re up to now? (on a non rant side note, if the papists get to use roman numerals like that shouldn’t papal elections be more like the superbowl? cause that be way more interesting to watch then waiting for white smoke…) The man ran on being a centrist and and is doing this to reach out to the more moderate wing of the jesus freaks- you know all those people in flyover country who voted for him even though he didn’t carry the state?
I hope the gays who supposedly had Rick Warren over for dinner spat in his food. Or gave him the AIDS. Also.
Also, the “I-have-gay-friends” defense against homophobia is basically the same as the “I-have-black-friends” defense against racism. Which is to say, it sucks.
Huh… gay rights and black people rights seem to be getting more similar everyday.
[re=202332]mikeyboypdx[/re]: Socialist governments love teh gays, huh? See Castro, Fidel.
I thought Warren was rather slimily condescending to Obama (relative to his treatment of McCain) during their pre-election “discussion.” So now we get Obama showing the Christians how to be Christian. Besides, Warren says that for 5000 years in all cultures marriage has been defined as between one man and one woman. No, no, Ricky, in many times and places men have defined it as between one man and MANY women. The more exposure Ricky Wurmin’ gets, the more his stupidity will be revealed. (I have to believe that.)
Damn, I’m late to the party yet again. I think Rick Warren is an excellent choice for this, as long as they remember to drop the bucket of pig blood on him at the end.
[re=202753]RabidHamster[/re]:
Late but great. I like that idea.
[re=202605]DeLand DeLakes[/re]: Common misconception. Cuba (and China, Vietnam, and Russia after Lenin) were NOT socialist states, but rather state capitalism, where the state took over the the machinery. What I advocate for is a true workers’ state, where workers councils are in charge and elect delegates to a people’s congress to make decisions about production, distribution, etc. This is the most common mistake people make. There has been only one example of socialism in action, and that only lasted a few years in Russia.
[re=203084]mikeyboypdx[/re]: Ahhhh, and the best way to achieve this is to associate with a ragtag group of hippies who have to process for six hours before putting up a fucking flier, and who will never be able to assert themselves as a viable political party due to the fact that they think money is evil and want nothing to do with it. See Party, Green.
Aw shit, here we go again, it’s a darkly complected Clinton. Where the fuck did we get the idea that real political and cultural change can occur without alienating someone…just as long is that person isn’t marginalized to the point of imagined irrelevance, say, the gay community which like the rest of us progressives never had a real choice in this pathetic sham of an electoral system.
