The Swiss Will Save Our Global Economy

  • Because things just can’t go badly enough for poor Zimbabwe, it is now suffering a cholera outbreak which a presidential spokesman suggested was an American and British plot to “invade” the country. [BBC News]
  • Bank of America cut the credit line of Chicago-based Republic Windows & Doors, which in turn laid off its 250 workers without any severance pay, and now Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich says the state won’t do any business with B of A until they restore Republic’s line of credit. Critics say this sets a bad precedent for state meddling in private affairs. [Bloomberg]
  • Old people can now get their Jay Leno “fix” even earlier — starting in the fall, he’ll be on every goddamned weekday night at 10pm. [New York Times]
  • The men accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks would like to plead guilty and be sentenced before Barack Obama becomes president and possibly prevents them from being martyred by the death penalty. [AP]
  • Nancy Pelosi dressed up like a giant cranberry yesterday and spoke at a press conference about bailing out Detroit. [Washington Post]
  • Pretty much every employer everywhere in the world (except the US, Canada and Switzerland) expects to hire fewer people next quarter. [Wall Street Journal]

OMG - when will I be able to watch Law & Order reruns? Oh, I know - constantly, on every other channel.

Silly Mugabe. Better luck next time.
To the world: Unless you folks are sitting on a big fountain of oil, US America doesn’t give a shit and mostly won’t invade you or even drop a pity JDAM on your head.

“Critics say this sets a bad precedent for state meddling in private affairs.”
They have a point, but in the last 30+ years the banks have been actively meddling in public affairs mostly to the detriment of the public (see Phil Gramm), and the fact that BoA took public money to keep its execs in hookers and blow while fucking over the public.

I can see how Zimbabwe could confuse explosive diarrhea with an American plot.

The only way the Bush administration could’ve started a cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe is if they’d been trying to give them measles instead. On the other hand, African kids are now getting high on AIDS antiretrovirals — talk about unintended consequences:

Poor Robert Mugabe as soon as he comes up with a realistic plan to lower the country’s inflation rate from 100,000,000% a year to 99,999,999% a year the wicked British and American imperialists afflict the country with just the sort of disease you’d expect to find in a nation whose economy has collapsed due to the incompetence of its insane, megalomaniacal dictator.

The Illinois government is run by children, NBC and the Tonight Show are run by senior citizens, and everyone’s rapid-aging like the old Robin Williams movie and reverse aging like the newish Brad Pitt movie and I’m so darn confused

  7. PeteJayhawk v2.0 says at 9:05 am, December 9th, 2008

What a desperate attempt by Blagojevich to raise his approval rating over that landmark 5% point.

    >>Critics say this sets a bad precedent for state meddling in private affairs.

Government boycotting bank fucking workers = meddling
Government bailing out banks that fuck workers = good governance

    Got it.

  9. theres just too many shitheads here to snark at, so let me just give a blanket “eat a bag o’ dicks” to the lot of them.

I know it’s subjective; but I wish Leno would just go away…he’s never been particularly funny; insulting, yes; funny, no…

  11. charlesdegoal says at 9:21 am, December 9th, 2008

4tehlulz: BofA should be nationalized, along with the auto industry, which is being nationalized according to a NYT headline, other sectors of the “economy” and possibly the internets

  12. The only upside to Leno being on earlier is it might rid the airwaves of trashy local news.

  13. 4tehlulz says at 9:24 am, December 9th, 2008

Holy shit. BoA works fast. Blagojevich just got taken into custody, per TPM.

  14. Naked Bunny with a Whip says at 9:25 am, December 9th, 2008

Because the combined US and British military would have no chance against Zimbabwe without a cholera outbreak. Actually, after Bush and Blair, that might be true.

  15. space stout says at 9:28 am, December 9th, 2008

doesn’t zimbabwe know that amurkens prefer to use the pox when we invade countries?

  16. Naked Bunny with a Whip says at 9:39 am, December 9th, 2008

I prefer to personally spread VD, but it does take a little longer than cholera. But not much.

  17. Somewhere in the US right now there’s a 6 month old baby who, in 24 years, will do an indie film on the Republic W&D workers’ takeover.

  18. Unindicted Co-Conspirator says at 9:42 am, December 9th, 2008

It doesn’t matter what Governor Blagojevich says anymore as he was just arrested by the FBI at his house on the NW side of Chicago!
Blago’s chief of staff was also arrested.

US Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois Patrick Fitzgerald for Attorney General!

  19. slavojzizek says at 9:44 am, December 9th, 2008

How the fuck is the Jay Leno show news? I am so sick of supposedly professional journalists at esteemed media like Wonkette wasting our time on every box office return and programming change that we’ll all ignore anyway, as TV reception near the dumpster outside 7-11 sucks.

  20. ManchuCandidate says at 9:47 am, December 9th, 2008

    4tehlulz:
Smells a lot like the Spitzer Whore Diamond Scandal. Wasn’t he sniffing around AIG when he got defenestrated?

  21. magic titty says at 10:10 am, December 9th, 2008

Pelosi looked hawt. And rich in anti-oxidants. Don’t hate.

  22. And by “hire fewer people”, they really mean “fire people even faster.”

  23. magic titty: Yes, hawt, though I didn’t expect anybody here to say that.

  24. hockeymom says at 11:17 am, December 9th, 2008

How many governors in Illinois are either in the pokey or headed there?
It makes you wonder if Chicago politics is not quite on the up and up.
(the the exception of Hopey, of course)
