MEDIA IS DEAD

Hope you like your news in German.ALL NEWSPAPERS FAILING: Tribune Co. went ahead and declared bankruptcy, which is surely good news for the battered half-dead Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. The New York Times is scheduled to go bust later this week, probably. The prognosis for print newspapers has been pretty grim since the 1980s, but the specific financial collapse of Tribune Co. and the NYT is, like everything, the fault of the real-estate bubble and credit swaps and whatever. …and Bill Clinton, Ken. You forgot to blame the Clenis.

LAT has been in a persistent vegetative state for years. Good thing someone has compassionately pulled the plug. Oh, wait, Chapter 11 is like a feeding tube, but where you get to pick which organs still work and which shut down. Aw, screw it, this analogy really sucks.

  3. Does the feeding tube reach the pantload?

Good to know that openning up as a public traded company and thereby having institutions important to the maintance of constitutional democracy being controled by greedy fuckheads is going so well.

  8. Whatever, when I want a newspaper I just read the Daily News anyway. It’s New York’s Hometown Paper!

  9. ManchuCandidate says at 3:10 pm, December 8th, 2008

If Zell goes down the shitter then who will keep Jonah the Whale published (LAT) so he can remain knee deep in Funyuns and Bearclaws?

  10. AngryBlakGuy says at 3:13 pm, December 8th, 2008

    …I smell some bail-out cash!

  11. No wonder the newspapers are going bankrupt. I’m not interested in seeing any pixxx of Uncle Barry’s House unless there’s substantial Bling involved. Ideally with aliens lurking the the windows.

Now “Today’s Papers” on Slate will only take half as long to read. Things just keep getting better!

actor212: And the Community Reinvestment Act. If black people weren’t allowed to borrow money, this would never have happened.

  14. Ok, so my language skills suck, but does that really say “Uncle Barack’s Cabin”? Ack

  15. Anonymous Office Zombie says at 3:16 pm, December 8th, 2008

This should help Bush’s legacy among the base. They’ve been waiting for somebody to kill off the NYT for years.

actor212: “The Clenis” sounds like a new VD.

Terry:Now, Terry. The Germans never made a racist statement like that. Oh wait…

Sure GWB had to kill long-standing and venerable financial institutions, multitudes of innocent Iraqis, the auto-industry, Republicanism, and human decency to do it, but he finally got that goddamned NYT.

    Well done, sir.

If all these papers go out of business, who will provide Mika’s segments every day on Morning Joe? Will they have to, God forbid, HIRE A WRITER??

magic titty: You just outlined a future David Broder column.

  21. Mr Blifil says at 3:28 pm, December 8th, 2008

Uncle Barack’s Cabin? HAH! Those Germans are high-larious volks. Watch them twit us poor politically correct fools! What cause do they have to be overly sensitive to language concerning minorities?! All that other shit was over 50 years ago!

Seriously, the editors of Die Tageszeitung need to gather as a group and have a viewing of “Downfall” before they make another front page decision.

  22. hockeymom says at 3:33 pm, December 8th, 2008

Sam Zell, du bist ein dummkopf.

  23. Does that headline read “Uncle Barack’s Cabin,” or is my German as bad as my Republican?

  24. StrangelyBrown says at 3:54 pm, December 8th, 2008

Seeing that headline again makes me feel all nostalgic, like the former high school quarterback who threw 25 completions to win State then spent the next fifteen years as the assistant manager at Foot Locker.

    Or like Sarah Palin.

  25. Content Tool says at 4:27 pm, December 8th, 2008

DangerousLiberal: Actually the Tribune company has actively been killing the Times since they bought it and Zell has only increased the speed and ferocity of the killing. It’s a shame.

  26. Texmandie says at 5:07 pm, December 8th, 2008

Yes, it does say “Uncle Barack’s Cabin,” and the “tz” is probably the most leftist of the big newspapers in Germany, which is saying something. The “conservative” Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung would hit somewhere around Washington Post territory, for what it’s worth.

But right-populist Bild is probably your best entertainment value, even if you don’t actually read German that well. Axel Springer made Murdoch look sensitive and conscientious.

  27. Texmandie says at 5:10 pm, December 8th, 2008

Mr Blifil: The TZ was probably twitting Obama for being insufficiently leftist.

Now, has this come out in Bild…

  28. This is the most progressive national paper in Germany, far more progressive (and better) than any national newspaper in the US. They’re adamantly anti-racist. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and accept their explanation that they were celebrating the progress made since the days of slavery. Poor choice of words probably due to insufficient understanding of the American connotation.

Gotta love Bild. It’s like the unholy child of Perez Hilton and Fox News in German.

  29. kbanginmotown says at 5:44 pm, December 8th, 2008

Calm down, folks. This headline is, IMHO, trying to achieve both the “in your face” shock and subtle “up yours” attitude that the “New Yorker - Politics of Fear” cover provoked back in July.

    .
Think about it. Uncle Tom was Livin’ Among the Lowly a century and a half ago. Check out Onkel Barack’s Digs NOW muthaf@cker! Ha!

Links: My sentiments exactly. Except that I think that the “poor choice of words” was a deliberate attempt to stick it to the racists.

  32. StrangelyBrown says at 6:01 pm, December 8th, 2008

Unbunch the panties, folks, this headline is ancient — and was appropriately snarked into oblivion at the time:

  33. sanantonerose says at 6:30 pm, December 8th, 2008

No one who speaks German could be an evil man.

And “Uncle Barack?” That’s a little harsh, don’t you think?

  34. StrangelyBrown: I remember that - you ended up being quoted by Der Spiegel on the topic!

  35. DangerousLiberal says at 9:40 pm, December 8th, 2008

Content Tool: Word. And without a new Staples Center on the horizon, the LAT has no fresh infusion of news/cash/graft/all of the above on the horizon.

Didn’t a former exec from Kellog’s or something run the LAT for a while? Isn’t it time to let the guy from Quaker Oats have a crack at it?

  36. kbanginmotown says at 11:29 pm, December 8th, 2008

@StrangelyBrown: Thanks for the link! I was out of town the week in June that this went down, sorry I missed it! (Kinda interesting that the TZ had an inflammatory cover page over a month before The New Yorker got into the act.)
