Tony Perkins is an evil piece of crap. He sits there and says to Dan Savage, the father of a son with his boyfriend, that children need a father and a mother, not two fathers. Dan deals with it better than I would have.

If it’s about the rule of the majority (as Perkins so succinctly misrepresents the Constitution) then what’s to keep people from enacting a constitutional amendment banning Mormons from marrying? Or Baptists or Episcopalians, for that matter? I think it would be fun to carry this to its extreme and just ban marriage entirely, and be done with the damn thing.

Also notice how the Tony and Bill O’Reilly and the Right are trying to fan the flames of a war between the African American and the GLBTQ communities around Prop 8. Dan had written some questionable things about that a few days ago on Slog, but since then has changed his tune. We can’t infight and overturn Prop 8. This will be a long fight.

They’ve spent the last hundred odd years fighting with the Federal gov’t about how they define marriage (one man with as many wimmins as he done wants). If any affiliated group would benefit from having a loosening of the “definition” of marriage as one man/one woman, the Mormon Church would be it.
I know the Mormon Church hates gays as much as any organization that claims the ability to cure them can, but this, truly, is an amazing example of a group overwhelmed by predjudice into fighting against their own self interest. It will make for some very facinating graduate sociology theses.

I’m in total agreement with Dan Savage’s position. That said, his constant interruption of the other speaker was totally out of line and obnoxious. The battle is not going to be won by whoever yells the loudest or interrupts the most aggressively. Savage needs some media training to win hearts and minds, not turn off even those of us who share his perspective. That rudeness undercuts the very real power of his argument.

Gay marriage not analogous to interracial marriage since anti-miscegenation laws added marriage stipulations while gay marriage laws redefine marriage as such. True.
Marriage is not a universal right and governments limit whom people can marry all the time. Also true.
But… the conservative arguments against gay marriage belie not only common sense, but also the experience within conservative community. The arguments are essentially 1)defining it as a union between two consenting adults undercuts a necessary institution. How does expanding an institution to include more people demean and undercut it? Wouldn’t it serve as a bulwark for marriage as a model for monogamous adult relationships? 2) Slippery slope. “MEN MARRYING PLANTS! WOMEN MARRYING KITCHEN APPLIANCES! YOU STARTED IT! YA GAYWADS!” Facile and obviously illogical. Dan is right. Courts examine many things on case by case basis, why would logic go out the window, and why wouldn’t a “reasonable person” standard be applicable in this case?
Dan Savage is SOLID in this.
