Dan Savage offers one of the better commentaries on Prop 8 we’ve seen. [YouTube via Andrew Sullivan]

Tony Perkins is an evil piece of crap. He sits there and says to Dan Savage, the father of a son with his boyfriend, that children need a father and a mother, not two fathers. Dan deals with it better than I would have.

Advocatus_Diaboli November 13, 2008 at 12:17 pm

So that’s what happened to Richie Cunningham. I’d been wondering what he was doing with his boyish good looks.

DCBulloch November 13, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Whose taking bets on how long until kiddy porn is discovered in Tony Perkins office?

I am betting that his boyfriend is Troy King.

jbd November 13, 2008 at 12:19 pm

If I were gay, I would probably crush hard on Dan Savage. Tony Perkins…. Well. “Evil” is too strong, but it’s not all that far off.

Now stop posting ten minute video clips so I can at least pretend to work? Please?

You know this is KILLING Anderson Cooper.

Can I punch Tony Perkins in the face just once?

Doglessliberal November 13, 2008 at 12:22 pm

[re=175711]problemwithcaring[/re]: hard to imagine who would, and Anderson has an additional reason not to!

Min November 13, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Idiot. Marriage hasn’t been exclusively about children for decades. Otherwise non-fertile people couldn’t marry, old people couldn’t marry, and people who use birth control couldn’t marry. I’m 48 years old. If I got married at this point in my life, it sure as hell wouldn’t be for the purpose of having kids.

Homo Motors November 13, 2008 at 12:26 pm

It takes a courageous man like Tony Perkins to finally say “Hey all you retarded infertile women – Suck it! That’s not what marriage is about, you whorish ANOMALIES! It’s about moms and dads, so GIT ABORTED.”

Doglessliberal November 13, 2008 at 12:29 pm

[re=175719]Min[/re]: it wasn’t about chldren when it started, either. It was about property and estates. His entire argument is based on the BS premise that children need a father and a mother and thus, gay marriage threatens society. There are so many flaws in this reasoning, it is hard to know where to begin. I suppose he believes that any female who becomes pregnant out of wedlock must immediately marry the father, too? Or turn over the child immediately to a male/female married couple? What an ass.

Wasn’t Tony Perkins behind that stunt at St. Patrick’s Cathedral that had two heteros fucking in the pews? If not, by his logic, he should have been.

Dan Savage is the lord of all media interviews. He made Stephen Colbert crack up and break character the other night.

Dan Savage for President in 2016! He just smacked that Tony Perkins down at every conceivable opportunity.

Thate said, the frission in the exchange was also verrrrry intriguing. I can just see them having a hate-fuck afterwards….with Anderson as the meat in their Are Too-Are Not sandwich. I am sure that it would also be interesting to speculate on what else besides praying to Jesus that Tony could do with that very pretty mouth.

AngryBlakGuy November 13, 2008 at 12:35 pm

So Tony Perkins, if what you say is true, I guess this means that all hetro-sexual couples with children should not be allowed to divorce? Because this is all about the good of the children, right? Okay, got it. Let’s get a no divorce for hetro-sexual couples with kids amendment in our good ole constitution that demands that.

Why does every male who fights against Gay Marriage look like they’d enjoy a nice ass pounding?

Male Penis + Male Anus = Gozer!

SayItWithWookies November 13, 2008 at 12:42 pm

If it’s about the rule of the majority (as Perkins so succinctly misrepresents the Constitution) then what’s to keep people from enacting a constitutional amendment banning Mormons from marrying? Or Baptists or Episcopalians, for that matter? I think it would be fun to carry this to its extreme and just ban marriage entirely, and be done with the damn thing.

blader November 13, 2008 at 12:43 pm

If that Dan Savage feller was a negro, I’m sure that other feller would’ve called him “uppity” not long into that one

AnnieGetYourFun November 13, 2008 at 12:43 pm

STODFYM: They actually do want to restrict divorce. Here’s a link if you can handle it: http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=BC04D02

They want to get rid of “no-fault” divorces which are essentially any divorce that isn’t due to Violence, adultery, or desertion.

Tony Perkins and these assholes are on the wrong side of history and in a few years, once Barry has had a chance to clean the shit stains out of the Supreme Court, we’ll get equal rights for everyone on a national level.

Also notice how the Tony and Bill O’Reilly and the Right are trying to fan the flames of a war between the African American and the GLBTQ communities around Prop 8. Dan had written some questionable things about that a few days ago on Slog, but since then has changed his tune. We can’t infight and overturn Prop 8. This will be a long fight.

populucious November 13, 2008 at 12:50 pm

[re=175750]SayItWithWookies[/re]: this is the thing I find so baffling about the Mormons role in this. They’ve spent the last hundred odd years fighting with the Federal gov’t about how they define marriage (one man with as many wimmins as he done wants). If any affiliated group would benefit from having a loosening of the “definition” of marriage as one man/one woman, the Mormon Church would be it.

I know the Mormon Church hates gays as much as any organization that claims the ability to cure them can, but this, truly, is an amazing example of a group overwhelmed by predjudice into fighting against their own self interest. It will make for some very facinating graduate sociology theses.

Doglessliberal November 13, 2008 at 12:52 pm

[re=175768]NoWireHangers[/re]: ah, but note, it is the moderates on the Court who are due to retire first: Ginsberg and Stevens. So Barry will get two appointments that will maintain the status quo. We need Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, or Alito to retire, and that is not going to happen in the next 8 years.

tootsieroll November 13, 2008 at 12:53 pm

[re=175750]SayItWithWookies[/re]: omg there was this huge comments thread over stupid ass Jeff Jacoby’s last op-ed at the Boston Globe, where this loser kept getting slapped down (by me for one) about the same thing, “oh it’s a democracy and majority rules”. And every time he just came back all defensive with “if you actually go back and read my post you see I am talking about the Constitution blah blah.” Hello!!! McFly! We do not legislate by majority vote in this country. Duh.

But yeah like, 99% of the comments were telling Jacoby, who was slamming teh gays for calling blacks bigots for voting prop 8. It was a lame piece.

Internally Valid: Thanks for that, I think. I think that they should add to the “no fault” divorces: any person who has tried in any way to restrict the marriage and/or divorce rights of another person in this country can not get divorced, EVEN IF THEY ARE ABUSED, CHEATED ON, or DESERTED. Fucking Fuckers!

I’m in total agreement with Dan Savage’s position. That said, his constant interruption of the other speaker was totally out of line and obnoxious. The battle is not going to be won by whoever yells the loudest or interrupts the most aggressively. Savage needs some media training to win hearts and minds, not turn off even those of us who share his perspective. That rudeness undercuts the very real power of his argument.

Ahhh, let’s see Tony’s arguments here:
Gay marriage not analogous to interracial marriage since anti-miscegenation laws added marriage stipulations while gay marriage laws redefine marriage as such. True.
Marriage is not a universal right and governments limit whom people can marry all the time. Also true.
But… the conservative arguments against gay marriage belie not only common sense, but also the experience within conservative community. The arguments are essentially 1)defining it as a union between two consenting adults undercuts a necessary institution. How does expanding an institution to include more people demean and undercut it? Wouldn’t it serve as a bulwark for marriage as a model for monogamous adult relationships? 2) Slippery slope. “MEN MARRYING PLANTS! WOMEN MARRYING KITCHEN APPLIANCES! YOU STARTED IT! YA GAYWADS!” Facile and obviously illogical. Dan is right. Courts examine many things on case by case basis, why would logic go out the window, and why wouldn’t a “reasonable person” standard be applicable in this case?

I’ve always like Dan Savage, though Anderson’s probably not interested (Dan’s too…uhhh…Seattle for AC’s tastes). Tony Perkins is a skunk and has been since he served in the Louisiana legislature. As for Dan shouting him down, fine with me. These are all shoutfests anyway, why not get in the mix? Usually, we just sit there like Quentin Crisp waiting to be called upon by the kind and genial host. F that. Tony Perkins is a sleazebag, mix it up.

Also, as a gay Christian (who would never want to get married…I’m gay for a reason), enough with the gay-baiting. There are people starving, going broke, worrying about losing their homes and all these churchgoing clodhoppers can come up with is “vote NO on Adam and Steve”? Seriously, What Would Jesus Do?

Savage says the Mormons slimed gays in public? Like with lube or what?

I thought it was enough that Dan Savage provided us with a definition for santorum. Now this smackdown. He’s a patriot.
