There are plenty of reasons to celebrate this weekend — not that there’s any doubt you haven’t been wasted since Tuesday, 11 PM anyway. Still! Hopey is officially moving to town, which means you don’t have to see another one of CNN’s dumb holograms again until 2012, at least. And look at this: there are a disproportionate number of excellent Rock and Roll concerts in DC this weekend, including the Sea and Cake, David Byrne, and the Gutter Twins. Plus Art Spiegelman! This is that Change you were promised.
Friday:
Maus author Art Spiegelman will be at Politics & Prose discussing his affinity for comics and the like. 7 PM. [Politics & Prose]
9:30 Club is hosting the Dark Star Orchestra for two nights, starting tonight. Go to both and compare the set lists because isn’t that what you’re supposed to do? $26; 7 PM (Fri), 8 PM (Sat). [9:30 Club]
1/2 Afghan Whigs, 1/2 Screaming Trees: The Gutter Twins are playing the Black Cat. $20; 9 PM. [Black Cat]
Hang out at the Hirshhorn after dark. There’ll be a sneak preview of the museum’s new contemporary art collection, plus drinks and dancing. 8 PM; $10. [Hirshhorn]
Saturday:
Chicago-based jazz-pop heroes the Sea and Cake, who are awesome awesome awesome, are playing at the Black Cat. $15; 9:30. Go see this thing, really! [Black Cat]
See Catherine Deneuve in A Christmas Tale. It’s a movie about French Christmas, or “Noel.” [AFI Silver]
The National Gallery is having a Josef von Sternberg six-film marathon, beginning today. This weekend’s films are The Salvation Hunters and Children of Divorce. [National Gallery]
Sunday:
Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne is playing the Warner Theater. 8 PM; about $60. [Warner Theater]

I LOVE THE SEA AND CAKE.

Psyyyyyyyyyyyych!
Ooops… meant to close that “bold” tag.
GDTRFB kindly requests no mocking of Dark Star Orchestra, set lists, comparing set lists, or any other such hippie-twirler-socialist things that will occur this weekend at the 930.
Oh, and David Byrne RULES!!!!
i heard a rumor that obama helped write a grant for thrill jockey records, former / current? sea & cake label

If you’re ‘bold’ for more than four hours, better git to a doctor!

you forgot Joel McHale’s sold out shows at the Warner tomorra.
and–semi-threadjack!–in W. House news–Barney has madz and bites reporter guy. I would have
bitten him, too, the way he was coming at the poor doggie. I will miss Barney and
Mrs. Beazley, who have the same contempt for their male human as the rest
of the world.
The world can do with more holograms. They make every day science-fiction-y!
And yes, I’ll be a happy person if I live in a continual state of November 4thness. Alas, it can not be.

I’m just gonna play Fallout 3 all weekend.
[re=169593]Rodney Badger[/re]: Me too. My Fallout guy is even more of an alcoholic than I am, which I find impressive.
I’m worried that Art Spiegelman is running out of things to whore out to comics fans.
[re=169602]InsidiousTuna[/re]: There sure is a lot of free booze lying around post-apocalypse DC. Not that I’m complaining. . .
Art Spiegelman, the genius behind the Obama New Yorker cover? He’s a barrel of laughs. Don’t forget to ask him about Auschwitz. His book on 9/11? Also freakin’ hilari-ass!
As tempting as the Hirshhorn after dark has always been (no, not really), I’ll stick with dancing my Chicago-transplanted ass off at the Ghostland Observatory show at the Metro (no, not the subway) tomorrow night!! Yeah, baby. Rock and/or roll.
I love change!!! And David Byrne.
Uh,looks like Cheney’s on a bender…..
