National Review: Liberals Hate Palin For Not Having Abortions

by Jim Newell

No matter how many times the liberals answer this question, conservatives continue to ask in conjured bewilderment, “why all the anger at Sarah Palin?” The liberals’ answer — that she’s not qualified to run anything but pretends that she is via an unprecedented streak of nasty, horrific lying — well, that’s a load of socialist poo; why do they really hate her? Is it her accent, or her vagina, or just the fact that she’s too perfect for liberals to comprehend? Definitely, all of that, but the major reason mean liberals hate Sarah Palin sifts below the surface of the warped liberal psyche, as Kevin Burke writes in a stunning new National Review article: since all liberals have had several abortions, they hate Sarah Palin (and apparently Bristol!) for not having abortions. This is a real article.

We at Wonkette don’t think Sarah Palin is worth two shits to decorate her grave… but then again we had 19 hilarious abortions just this morning so maybe there is a connection…??

Some of the very personal and often uncharitable criticism of vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin and her family may have a relationship to the collective grief, shame, and guilt from personal involvement in the abortion of an unborn child.

Seeing the Palin family, in a very visible public forum, with an uncompromising and public pro life philosophy arouses deeply repressed feelings in post abortive parents, as well as media members, counselors, health care professionals, politicians and others who promote abortion rights, especially the abortion of children with challenges such as Down Syndrome. These powerful repressed feelings of grief, guilt and shame can be deflected from the source of the wound (i.e., abortion) and projected onto an often uncharitable focus upon the trigger of these painful emotions…the Palin family.

[Spits aborted baby fetus lunch from mouth] … HENNNGGGGH?

Oh and here’s a bit for the ages:

If Bristol Palin had quietly aborted, Sarah Palin would have been spared the politically untimely focus on this very personal family issue. The problem would have quietly gone away. But Bristol, like countless post abortive women, would have paid a high price to protect her mother from the political heat that her pregnancy brings to the campaign.

We’ve rarely read articles, even in such make-believe “smart” places as the National Review, in which literally every assumption or leap of logic is spectacularly wrong. This is the stuff in your National Review, everyone! Liberals hate Sarah Palin for not having abortions, which they have all had or want to have! Not only did someone write this article, but an editor made edits, a copy editor made copy edits, another editor probably made more editors, one more round of copy editing, and then someone signed off on its publication. Really! You’re not imagining this article’s existence! It’s actually real!

Hopey dont play that game October 26, 2008 at 4:44 pm

I’m sorry– could you read that article again? I get distracted during an abortion.

DangerousLiberal October 26, 2008 at 4:45 pm

I dislike Sara Palin for all the reasons listed above, and then some. I dislike the National Review for being nearly 100 percent fact and logic resistant. Which is why the NR and SP are perfect for each other.

That said, I never thought I’d see the right–not just the loony-bin Donald Wildmon right, but the sorta batshit “conservative” right–completely melt down like this. Sounds like they’re running a fifty state strategy–let’s see if we can lose all fifty states. Alas, Alaskassippi hasn’t gotten the memo.

eatsshootsleaves October 26, 2008 at 4:45 pm

Personally, I hate Palin because of the repressed guilt I feel for not thinking women should be charged for rape kits. Deep down, everyone knows those bitches had it coming.

jagorev October 26, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Don’t be silly, the National Review believes editing is for liberal pussies. They pretty much just excrete whatever comes into their subconscious and call it an article.

War Eagle October 26, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Well, if it’s not currently in use, someone could rent out her uterus for fruit fly research or a post-election party.

CollegeStudent October 26, 2008 at 4:48 pm

My reaction: the inevitable and ubiquitous vomit in the mouth. However the twist is, instead of the “I just vomited a little in my mouth,” I had the “I just vomited a lot, in my mouth.”

facehead October 26, 2008 at 4:48 pm

Being a man with teeth, I’m jealous I could never be a hockey mom.

wallythepug October 26, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Hmm, I think she’s a lyin’ skank, and I haven’t had any abortions. How to decipher that one?

Worlds End October 26, 2008 at 4:50 pm

So, did she release the medical records yet?

Texan Bulldoggette October 26, 2008 at 4:50 pm

I loathe Bible Spice because she’s a stupid, ‘mean-girl’ bitch, who is too dumb & vain to know people are laughing at her–not with her.

OhYeahAlright October 26, 2008 at 4:50 pm

I hate Sarah Palin because she’s an ugly version of Tina Fey.

rambone October 26, 2008 at 4:51 pm

Well, I do kind of resent Palin for having been born, but a spontaneous miscarriage would have been fine too.

liberaljewmedia October 26, 2008 at 4:51 pm

As a Canadian man who is for some reason probably going to move to America soon, please let me know how many abortions I need in order to vote and get a driver’s license and such once the visitor from the planet Africa has assumed control of your once-pregnant and now bloody and barren nation.

dano October 26, 2008 at 4:53 pm

I dislike Palin not for her fertile womb and refusal to terminate her pregnancies, but for her failure to lick my balls properly.

Styrofoam Boots October 26, 2008 at 4:54 pm

As a man I’m missing my natural liberal desire to have an abortion. For that, I fill myself with jealous rage and throw it at Sarah Palin.

Czn939 October 26, 2008 at 4:56 pm

I’m actually stumped trying to think up a more utterly retarded reason
why liberals wouldn’t like Palin.
I really can’t.
I hate Sarah Palin for that!

cal October 26, 2008 at 4:56 pm

How do they explain men hating Palin?

Are they included in “post abortive parents”? Because this genius then talks about “post abortive women” stone cold hatin’ on Bristol. Aren’t the fathers haters too?

In their world, it must no be possible, because all men naturally see *starbursts* when they look at Sarah.

Except for teh gayz, but forget about them, they’ll all be deported in a Palin adminstration, anyway.

Styrofoam Boots October 26, 2008 at 4:57 pm

I also masturbate to her Google search results while crying in the moonlight.

Gopherit October 26, 2008 at 4:58 pm

We at Wonkette don’t think Sarah Palin is worth two shits to decorate her grave… ”

Goddamn, Jim, you’re a poet. Thoreau would be envious.

jodyleek October 26, 2008 at 4:58 pm

So, I am voting for Obama because I have “white guilt” and I hate Sarah Palin because I have “abortion guilt”, is that right? Is this “guilt trip” campaign strategy the product
of a Catholic and Jewish mothers focus group, ’cause they do guilt trips like no other.

And, how do we know Sarah Palin, or Bristol Meyers Squib Palin have never had abortions? Do
we know the “real” Sarah Palin? Well, do we?

dearmurray October 26, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Gopherit October 26, 2008 at 5:03 pm

[re=149529]Worlds End[/re]: Hahahaha! Maybe she’s trying to have her 1980s/90s abortions expunged?

Numbat Dundee October 26, 2008 at 5:04 pm

And there I was thinking that everyone hated Palin’s Mother for not having an abortion! In the early 1970s the Aussie PM, Gough Whitlam, replied to an anti-abortion heckler who kept yelling out “What about abortion GOugh!” with “In your case it should be retrospective.”
There’s wisdom in that for all of us.

JDHART October 26, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Back in the day, I used to go to Planned Parenthood on a regular basis. It was where low income people (me) could go for gyn check-ups and, yes, information about and a perscription for BIRTH CONTROL pills. I was married for at least some of those appointments and I never once had an abortion. I didn’t understand then and I don’t understand now why people have a problem with Planned Parenthood. Surely, birth control and ob/gyn health services for low income women performs a necessary and valuable function in any modern society. And it’s called PLANNED Parenthood for a reason.

So, NRO, there’s more to womanhood than whether or not you’ve ever had an abortion. Grow up.

Cathangover October 26, 2008 at 5:06 pm

So wait, I love abortions but I also feel guilty about them? Is this why I do secret cutting?

Worlds End October 26, 2008 at 5:07 pm

[re=149561]Gopherit[/re]: thats what im thinking

aleks October 26, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Sorry NRO, I’m pro-life (although you’re making me ashamed to admit it) and she’s still an unqualified sleazy psychopath.

lizardmess October 26, 2008 at 5:09 pm

Goldwater’s daughter had an abortion. So there, NRO

monty October 26, 2008 at 5:17 pm

im havingmy once a month thought here. does anybody else have a sense of…i dont know….intellectual pride when they read things like this? im semi-educated(bs) semi-literate(more BS) but i really get my intellectual chubby when i realize that somebody got PAID to write that article in that fashion. IM A GENIUS, compared to that douche. I mean when did we start paying people for their fantasies? did anybody bother to go and read the article? That guy has a serious job, and from what i can tell he writes his wishes. Hes probably THE SMART ONE over there. Well shit i got all kinds of weird shit to spew some true, some wishful thinking and some fantasies about midgets and goats, where do i sign up for a paycheck. There are people who really think this guy has his shit together.

gjdodger October 26, 2008 at 5:43 pm

I hate Palin for her freedoms. And, oh yeah, the abortion thing. Why does America hate Palin? Plus she’s a douchenozzle. That’s a hatable offense. And I hate her because she’s too stupid to brand a backwards “B” on her face. for “BEJESUS IT’S THE MCCAIN STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS A-COMIN’ DOWN THE PIKE, BEGORRAH.” Two “B’s”, come to think of it.

tootsieroll October 26, 2008 at 5:48 pm

I hate Sarah Palin becuase she hated me first for not having an abortion so she could hate me.

I registered just to tell all of you I love you and thank you for making my weekend with your hilarious snarkiness. I wasted so much time reading posts all over the internet from neo-con haters, and getting angry when I could have been here making fun. So sad.

Toomush Infermashun October 26, 2008 at 5:50 pm

Clearly, from the language, Kevin Burke, editors and everyone else there who signed off on this have been spending a lot of time on the couch lately…. maybe they should try my remedy for madness – destroying my liver with a combination of Meyers and Coca Cola… not that it works very well…ABORT PALIN 08!!!!

OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin October 26, 2008 at 5:53 pm

It’s a common meme among conservative males, who still are not over the fact that the Constitution grants privacy from their voracious eyes.

And, how do we know Sarah Palin, or Bristol Meyers Squib Palin have never had abortions?

We don’t. And carrying the NRO’s “logic” to its end, SP has “abortion guilt” herself, like a lot of women who have them and then go as extremist “anti-abortion” they can.

Creepy people, all of them.

Yellow Cake October 26, 2008 at 6:04 pm

I’d comment on this article but I’m late for my abortion appointment. Buh-bye, gotta go.

J05H October 26, 2008 at 6:07 pm

mmm…. fetus humeat.

Try it with hot sauce, delicious fresh from the clone tanks. Wise man once said “It tastes best when it’s suffered the most.”

bitchincamaro October 26, 2008 at 6:12 pm

[re=149564]JDHART[/re]: After Walnuts steals the election, it shall henceforth be known as Palin Parenthood. You won’t go there as much for advice as you will to swap afterbirth recipies.

PoliTacky October 26, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Makes you wonder, was Ashley Todd subconsciously protesting ‘Plan B‘ abortion pills when she carved up her face?

Oh, and there’s only one thing of Sarah Palin’s that I’m jealous of, and that’s her unlimited Saks Fifth Avenue charge card.

Min October 26, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Oh, no. I haven’t had my abortion yet. Does this mean that I can’t continue to be a pinko commie liberal bent on detroying the very fabric of American society?

HomoPolitico October 26, 2008 at 6:46 pm

In Addition…
1) The gays hate Palin because she’s too fabulous.
2) Jewish fear of Palin is actually displaced shiksa lust.

I usually try to only make minority jokes about the things I am. Feel free to add your own.

4tehlulz October 26, 2008 at 7:15 pm

I don’t hate her at all. I actually respect her ability to destroy a major presidential candidacy merely by speaking.

facehead October 26, 2008 at 7:18 pm

But if you re-arrange the letters in the name “Bill Kristol” you get “Kill Bristol” and so obviously all the conservatives want to abort baby Jesus and poo on God.

TinyTheToga October 26, 2008 at 7:24 pm

“Kevin Burke LSW is the co-founder of Rachel’s Vineyard, a post-abortion healing ministry of Priests for Life”

Apparently the nation needs a good weekend at Kevin’s pray-away-the-abortion-guilt resort, to get over our shame of the Palins precious snowflakes

Oh, right, William F. Buckley in his grave.

With their proven abilities dimestore psychoanalysis, I’m surprised NRO hasn’t gone the distance and claimed that Hopey’s white female supporters are all sex-deprived, Harlequin-romance novel-reading nymphos with secret fantasies about being raped by a black man. But they’re too ugly to find any takers, so they sublimate their failed desires into electoral politics.

Hey, it could work, no?

You know, in my quest for fair enlightenment this election season, I sought and sought a “non-wingnut-neocon-conservative” site to try to get both sides. And I thought the National Review was kinda one of those respectable ones. I soon saw the folly in my ways.

Mara47 October 26, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Goodie me! I just sent this to Kevin Burke. I’m hoping he’s call me up and invite me out to dinner to hear more:

Mr. Burke, there may be some one-issue voters for whom a person’s position on reproductive rights would be their only concern in considering Sarah Palin’s candidacy. I can tell you, however, that without a single exception, everyone I know who has rejected her as a potential President — no matter what their experience of abortion, of lack thereof — has done so because they consider her to be dangerously unqualified for the job, proudly lacking in intellectual curiosity, and possessed of a very troubling ethical code. Your article says more about your own obsession with abortion than about how Palin’s personal beliefs may or may not have been the deciding factor in how badly the McCain campaign is tanking right now. This is not the clear conservative thinking that National Review used to be noted for.

AnnieGetYourFun October 26, 2008 at 8:12 pm

I’ll go ahead and admit that part of my rage towards Sarah Palin has to do with abortions. Every time I see her, I think, you know, I had the good sense to abort that stupid little fetus with the upswept hairdo and rimless glasses – why can’t everyone be as responsible as me?

PoJunk October 26, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Wonkette People – I am pissed. I sent you a tip about this type story a million days ago, or maybe like 3 but whatev, and you totally ignored me. Hideous Hairplugged Frying Pan Face Charles Krauthammerhead said almost the same exact thing on Brit Hume on WEDNESDAY and I wrote to you about it THEN. You never listen. What do I have to do? Show my tatas or somethin’? I’m so pissed.

Excerpt from transcript:

KRAUTHAMMER: The viciousness with which she was attacked as a contradiction in terms, a conservative woman.

In Palin’s case, I think what adds to it is her decision at her age with four other children to have a down syndrome child. This, too, as Joseph Epstein wrote, in feminist circles if abortion is not about this, what’s it about?

And they look at her as sort of a back room — a backwater hick, who, for religious reasons, went ahead and had a child that they would never have.

Underneath it, I think, deep underneath it, I think it’s a self-loathing on the part of these feminists, knowing that what she did is virtuous and a generous act that they would have never have undertaken. And her having undertaken it is an affront to them, a silent rebuke.

(full painful thing here:,2933,443751,00.html)

Okay, back to normal typing. Where is my Tao of Pooh? I need that and some brandy.

snig October 26, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Somehow, I no long feel like a real (Democratic) woman.

But hate Sarah Palin because she didn’t abort that little retard, Trigger? Who the fuck are they kidding? Hell, at least I didn’t name the child I forgot to abort (I must have been canvassing for a Democratic candidate for office and forgot I was pregnant) after a fucking horse.

Me, too. Never did I think the American electoral process could descend to such a level of WTFness that only wonkette provides the truly rational forum for considering this whatever it is we’re in.

I pray, pray, pray, Obama wins and then I pray he spends the next day finally laughing his skinny ass off. That the most intellectual and gifted person to run for president of this place since JFK has been forced to take this bullshit serious is the biggest crime of the century, to date. How did he not crack up during the debates with the confused old man?

If the Repubs steal it? Well, even wonkette can’t provide enough laughs then.

I forwarded the NRO article to my sister. From her demographics one would think she is a McCain/Palin supporter–white, upper-middle class, Catholic, married with five kids. She is a nurse practitioner, ob/gyn. Her husband thinks that abortion is a social issue, she doesn’t although she has a hard time imagining the circumstances under which she would have one. She thinks it is a personal, moral decision.

She feels that Sarah Palin is a bad joke but was really angry at the presumptuous blowhard at NRO.

my problems with sarah palin have pretty much nothing to do with my life and pretty much everything to do with hers.

Well, I didn’t charge the taxpayers for travel expenses, designer clothing, special education or court costs for any of my fetuses aborted, misplaced or carried to term. So let the hating go forward.Personally, I hate her because she’s a back stabbing crook with thick legs. Actually, now that I think it through I hate her because she allows her dick headed husband to meddle in government affairs and will need to be impeached.

My “deeply repressed feelings” stem from Palin’s adamant refusal to speak English. I don’t know about you, but I don’t believe foreigners have a place in our country. Now if you’ll excuse me, we’re about to have dinner I don’t want my abortion to burn.

reilly3000 October 27, 2008 at 3:03 am

Well, I for one am proud of the several unborn children I’ve aborted. I would hate for a child to grow up in this Black Muslim Terrorist wasteland that used to be America the Beautiful. If maybe I can get a good folksy role model like SP in charge then I can stop killin’ my babies and have hope for a brighter tomorrow…

Jonny Lieberman October 27, 2008 at 3:10 am

My question is, what will the right wing vitriol be like in four-years?

because, four years ago I thought we had seen them scrape the bottom of the sleaze and stupidity barrel. Wrongo!

I can’t really even imagine

trai_dep October 27, 2008 at 3:44 am

If I ever get an enema administered by white-clad medical professionals, I’m going to ask them to call it my abortion.
So I can hate Sarah Palin for all the right – err Right – reasons.

JSDC007 October 27, 2008 at 9:34 am

Seriously, the National Review is so full of sh*t, you can’t even wipe your ass with it anymore.

They don’t call it “America’s Shittiest Weblog Run by America’s Shittiest Magazine by America’s Doughiest Sheepfuckers” for nothin’!

LiberalCompassionFascist October 27, 2008 at 10:29 am

I don’t know what all the vitriol is about. NRO is absolutely right. I’ve had 15 abortions this week, and I’m a dude. I pause between abortions only to hire Mexican illegals to do the jobs I should be giving real Americans, all while having godless liberal gay socialist sex.

Mara47 October 27, 2008 at 10:41 am

Well guess what. I got what is probably a form letter reply from Kevin Burke, LSW , to my message (see above somewhere). Here it is, followed by my response. I want everyone to pat me on the back for being such a good little girl. Then I’ll buy you all the second (or third) caffeinated beverage of your morning to get this week really moving right along.

Thanks so much for your comments.
You are right that this is not the only reason that one can have a negative reaction to Sarah Palin.
I focused a sharp light on an issue we see in our healing work with thousands of women and men around the world suffering after abortion. They have taught us how deeply sensitive this are of loss is, and how they reacted when the issue of abortion is raised in different context. Often people are unaware of how their repressed grief, guilt and shame contributes to their avoidance of the topic or the type of reaction they have when this issue is raised.
Calls to our many sites that offer healing retreats increases considerably when stories like this are in the news because it does in fact trigger people. The People Magazine cover of Sarah and her son Trig can be a very painful reminder to someone who has unresolved feelings of guilt, shame and grief from their abortion of a Down Syndrome child…or their role in the death of that child.
The reality of post abortion suffering is often very threatening for many to face in our nation…to even admit that this might be an area that can hurt those that participate in the procedure and a loss that requires healing. There is an entrenched denial on this issue…and often a powerful reaction when you try and raise the issue. But denying the experience of those suffering after abortion only contributes to their shame and isolation.
We need to reach out with love and compassion for those that do feel a sense of grief and loss from their abortion experience.
Thanks again for reading the article and taking time to comment.

Kevin Burke, LSW

Thank you, Mr. Burke. I think your premise is valid; I don’t dispute that. I know that many women who have had abortions have been discouraged from acknowledging their grief, extending the effects of untreated Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder for a long time afterward. I think it’s a very good thing that therapists have begun to understand this, and are encouraging their clients to explore this if it applies to them.

No fully aware woman makes the decision to terminate a pregnancy lightly, even when it’s medically indicated in the interest of her health, and of course it carries emotional consequences. However, I believe that to frame your commentary as the signal cause of the negative reactions to Sarah Palin’s candidacy does both your argument and this nation a disservice. This is too important an election, during too grave a period in our evolution as a society, to be used as a tool to advance a narrowly defined and divisive social agenda.

Mara47 October 27, 2008 at 10:42 am

We now return you to our previously scheduled godless liberal gay socialist sex, already in progress.

LiberalCompassionFascist October 27, 2008 at 11:28 am

Don’t worry, I can still manage godless liberal gay socialist sex while reading Ken Burke’s reply to you, hiring illegals, and having abortions. We liberals may be evil, but at least we’re not single-issue evil.

The multiple-abortion-havers tend to support Palin, because she assuages their PTSD guilt, especially when they dress up like her and adopt the hair-do. Look at all of the young women turning out to Palin rallies, even holding calling contests for a chance to meet their heroine. Meanwhile, the bitter old Hillary-supporting women, who are too old to ever have had an abortion, are turning to Obama.

CardboardDreamin November 4, 2008 at 12:18 am

Ok, it’s confession time. Here’s the REAL real reason I hate Blue-Dress-Stain-Palin! After he lost the election, my beloved Hopey and I were going to have hot godless liberal gay socialist sex in his new-found free time, followed by 700 Billion steamy lunch-hour abortions. Now that bitch has fucked up my whole plan!!!! Thanks to her inability to shut her damn mouth HE’S GOING TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA – which means he won’t have any spare time after all.
