Here’s Your 13-Minute Keating Five Thing!

by Ken Layne

Good, bad, too long? You decide! We don’t have time to watch the whole thing, right now, due to Brain Damage. But the five-second version was pretty good. [Keating Economics]

Too long. No porn. Cannot do it now. Simply cannot.

surfacenoise76 October 6, 2008 at 12:39 pm

Way too long.

The Rev. Yevot October 6, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Way too long. Music not menacing enough. Barry should get a refund for this one.

Why does the Keating Scandal hate America?

NoWireHangers October 6, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Na-gaw-do-it.

Terry October 6, 2008 at 12:44 pm

I’m a little surprised that the Keating stuff hasn’t come up earlier.

Gopherit v2.0 October 6, 2008 at 12:45 pm

“McCain and his wife Cindy have spoken about the severe emotional trauma caused by the Keating investigation.”

Keating Five and a Half Years!

Delicious October 6, 2008 at 12:46 pm

McCain was the least guilty and actually pissed Keating off by not being more helpful,.but…

This is effective because although McCain has a good response for what happened, the more he talks about this shit, the worse it gets for him.

Rev. Wright didn’t destroy the life savings of retirees.

Bang him hard, Hopey.

donner_froh October 6, 2008 at 12:47 pm

The world economy will be a pile of steaming rubble in a week. Good time to point out that it is McCain’s fault.

Needs to be shorter, though. McCain = Bad.

Keating/Lincoln S&L = Worse.

McCain + Keating = Death to all carbon based life forms.

Miller October 6, 2008 at 12:49 pm

13 minutes? Christ, even Obama’s McCain hate screeds are scholarly and well produced. Can’t we just gets some ominous music and dramatic shadows falling over sleeping infants?

13 minutes? Does Barry know that no one remembers what they had for breakfast? No one can remember 13 minutes worth of anything. And isn’t 13 unlucky? Should be something like this “John McCain loves criminal that have been sent to prison & have had to have teh gay sex. Therefore John McCain loves teh gays.” Religious right stays home; Barry wins in a landslide.

donner_froh October 6, 2008 at 12:50 pm

[re=122261]Gopherit v2.0[/re]: Caption on graph should be: Economy worse than when Bush took office. McCain promises more of the same.

Delicious October 6, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Man, I recently came acros a bunch of quotes from George H.W. Bush and forgot just how stupid that guy was. This is one of my favorites:

“You cannot be president of the United States if you don’t have faith. Remember Lincoln, going to his knees in times of trial and the Civil War and all that stuff. You can’t be. And we are blessed. So don’t feel sorry for — don’t cry for me, Argentina. Message: I care.”

Canuckledragger October 6, 2008 at 12:52 pm

There he goes again, raising old factual issues by looking back at an opponent’s track record.

Another low blow from the O-bomber campaign. Just because it cost 120 bn bucks to cauterize the Keating wounds to the US economy doesn’t make him as bad as an unrepentent domestic terrorist who was, ya know, unrepentent.

After all, Keating did his five years in prison and paid his debt, despite all the McCain string-pulling to prevent that cruel fate. Whereas Ayers served NO TIME, because, well it was called “prosecutorial misconduct” related to FBI’s COINTELPRO.

Asked why his known fraternization with Keating was hurting his electoral chances while O-bomber’s purported association with Ayers wasn’t having the desired effect, McCain said: “Because life’s not fair.”

Dick Cheney also issued a statement: “So?”

A little OT, perhaps, but Ken, are you all alone today? You’re the only one posting here so far. Hopefully your teammates aren’t all out cashing in what’s left of the 401Ks…..

the deliverator October 6, 2008 at 12:53 pm

Damn, this is hardcore, for someone who was 11 during the original scandal. and it seems obvious that Obama has just been keeping a lid on this and waiting to pull it out their hat. TA DAH!

donner_froh October 6, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Does the –Unique Texture Portrait Using Only Torn Paper– company plan to use hundred dollar bills as their media of choice or will they all be out of circulation due to hording for use as insulation in the hobob jungle?

[re=122271]Texan Bulldoggette[/re]: “And isn’t 13 unlucky?”

Hey, worked out well for OJ. Guilty of 13 charges on the 13th anniversary of his murder trial acquittal.

When they find the 13th crystal skull we are all fucked. Skull fucked, as it were.

sarahconnor October 6, 2008 at 1:05 pm

Does it mean a lot of people are watching it at once, if it keeps stopping to reload…? Also, is the left side of the web site chopped off? v. frustrating… I can’t get any farther than Howell Heflin saying “you soiled your office”

scotterl October 6, 2008 at 1:08 pm

I surpressed my ADD long enough to get through it… mostly b/c this segment of 60 minutes made me shit myself last night. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/10/05/60minutes/main4502454.shtml

Texan Bulldoggette October 6, 2008 at 1:08 pm

[re=122308]sarahconnor[/re]: “You soiled your office” Sorry, it’s terribly juvenile of me but whenever someone says ‘soiled’ in reference to Walnuts, I get a huge chuckle.

[re=122308]sarahconnor[/re]: Whenever it stopped to buffer, I dragged the play bar forward a little. Seemed to solve it for me.

I give it an A for content and an F for communicating that content to the youngsters on the interwebs. Too long. Nothing that “pops.” Took ages to connect the S&L crisis to deregulation and what we’re going through in the present day.

In general, would have been improved by gratuitous Blingee-fication. But then, what wouldn’t be?

Oh, and for those who haven’t seen it, you MUST check out “Subprime Meltdown as Told by Stick Figures”: http://docs.google.com/TeamPresent?docid=ddp4zq7n_0cdjsr4fn&skipauth=true&pli=1

Click on the arrow at the bottom of the page for the next picture. Factually accurate and easy to understand. I actually learned quite a bit, but then, I can be a bit slow where the actions of more money than I’ll ever have are concerned.

dougbob October 6, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Before watching: go to the bathroom! this movie is longer than a drive from San Francisco to San Diego. Couldn’t they get a director to punch it up? Take no doze, my friends, you’ll need it.

Cronopio October 6, 2008 at 1:35 pm

I’m going to wait till late tonight, it keeps crashing. Guess that means it’s being watched, hooray! Although I lived thru the Keating scandal, and I still find it boring as hell.

Kingbee October 6, 2008 at 1:42 pm

Starts out slow (especially loading), and there is a little excess dead time, but this thing is electoral dynamite, in my view. The Obama Campaign needs to push this one hard, because it links the McCain of the Keating S&L scandal with the McCain of today. He’s older, but no wiser. Republicans have already run away a.f.a.p. from Bush, and this is where the stampede begins away from McCain.

bdevil02 October 6, 2008 at 1:47 pm

There’s excess dead time because some of the audio didn’t load right onto the YouTube version. Watch again (if you dare) on this link:

wtf_files October 6, 2008 at 2:05 pm

The 30-second version is much more effective, but the 13-minute reel is the best press release ever. Best thing that could happen for Barry right now is Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera discussing this tomorrow morning on Today. Maybe Anne Curry can shed a few emotional tears about money her father lost to the Keating Demon.

Gang of Mavericks — awayyyyyyy!!

TGY October 6, 2008 at 2:06 pm

FIVE AND A HALF KEATINGS!

Advocatus_Diaboli October 6, 2008 at 2:17 pm

This is only news for someone who has never paid attention and probably never will. Ergo, it’s 13 minutes too long.

GetItWrong October 6, 2008 at 2:24 pm

There’s a great abrupt cut to March 2008, with the regulator tsking about McCain not learning his lesson and McCain speechifying about how we need to “remove regulatory and accounting roadblocks”. I think most of us by this point are conditioned to snarl at that phrase.

The reason it’s 13 minutes is they couldn’t resist the long shots of McCain in a combover looking nervous and helpless.

mattbolt October 6, 2008 at 2:29 pm

I was watching some TLC property show the other day – “First time buyers” or something – anyways, it was filmed a couple years ago, and it showed a husband and wife – he had absolutely no credit and barely any income, she was a nighttime office cleaner who could just scrape together enough credit for a mortgage – anyways, they got approved for a $200,000 30-year mortgage with no money upfront. Puts the whole thing into perspective. I imagine this couple fled their nice 5-bedroom Wisconsin house sometime in the past month and disappeared to avoid foreclosure.

Tawmn October 6, 2008 at 2:37 pm

It’s actually pretty good… but too long. I’d love to see a two-minute or one and a half minute version.

The Faunist October 6, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Well worth the time and attention required to go beyond the general impression of McCain’s corruption into the very meaty specifics of his corruption.

GlennBecksTaint October 6, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Excellent piece, too bad that Americans are too fucking stupid to pay attention to anything for more than 30 seconds…

tripsydaily October 6, 2008 at 3:31 pm

JEEEBUS Obama! Save it for SXSW! We got the homecoming queen coming on strong and your running a hall monitoring play? This ain’t chess my friend – its more like Hi-Ho Cherry-O (think age appropriate) so you better start picking Caribou Barbies cherries clean!

norah October 6, 2008 at 5:08 pm

I think it’s great. Maybe a shorter version should be floating around for a 30-second add or whatever, but I thought it was amazing. But then I’m a latte-sipping liberal.

wheelie October 6, 2008 at 5:21 pm

Apart from some audio dropouts in that version, it’s very good.

One criticism: for people familiar with the S&L story and McCain’s supposed Damascene conversion afterwards, the key bit is the link made at the end to his continuing championing of deregulation.

So a synopsis, with that clip of him in March 2008, has got to go in right at the top of the piece.

I’m sure some bright person will do a judicious re-edit.

demian October 6, 2008 at 7:36 pm

McCain should endorse Obama.

Doc Gerbil October 6, 2008 at 8:17 pm

I’ll see you one Ayers and raise you 2 Keatings.

It is the Baraktober Surprise.
