OK, not to be racist, but. White ladies. Why do you all suck so much at everything? “Since picking Sarah Palin as his running mate, John McCain has obliterated what had been a 34-percentage-point deficit in a poll of likely women voters on the question of which candidate has a ‘better understanding of women and what is important’ to them… Unlike black and Hispanic women, White women saw McCain and Palin as most understanding of their concerns.” This is why no one likes you, white women. You are all awful and should be thrown in Gitmo for, uhm, causing the financial crisis. [Politico]

Ask NPR – they hate Obama with a white hot passion since he whipped poor little Hillary. So now they have their bullshit “poll,” which can only hurt him (i.e., “Is Palin qualified to be anything but a dick sack?”) My own (HRC vintage) mother is the same way – hates Bush, hates the mess everything is in, wanted Hillary, now voting for McCain. Angry, angry losers.

Ah ha! The NYT/CBS poll mentioned by Rachel Maddow, late last week, showing that the opposite was true: white woman support is down for Grampy.

Polls taken immediately after the convention had found evidence of a sharp increase in support for Mr. McCain among white women, but this poll suggests that that effect was, so far at least, limited. White women were evenly divided between Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama; before the conventions, Mr. McCain led Mr. Obama among white women, 44 percent to 37 percent.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! After weeks of HRC bitterness, I converted my 83-year-old Southern Baptist mother to Obama last week. It took exposure to some solid journalism, gentle coaxing, and a reminder that her only grandson’s future hangs in the balance.

FlakJack September 22, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Allow me to make sweeping generalizations that I nonetheless stand behind.

A fair percentage of white women of, especially those of, ahem, a certain age, are fearful and resentful of black men. They were raised in white ‘burbs by white parents during a time when distrusting, disliking and discriminating against blacks was an overt fact of life in many communities. They may be a small minority but they vote in droves, and there are plenty of Dems in that mix. This anything-but-silent minority nearly made the difference in Hillary’s quest for the nomination and you can be sure that a lot of them appreciate how Sarah Palin, by dint of being a woman, gives them a rationalization to get firmly behind a McCain candidacy without having to admit to themselves that they are essentially racists, what with all that pesky cognitive dissonance to resolve.

These women are my mother’s generation and I promise you I know them well.

Those of us who like to vote for the person we want running are country have been following the details all along already know the facts and don’t need them repeated. Dr. Zoidberg September 22, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Yes, a fair percentage may feel that way, FlakJack, but as you say, that’s a generalization. I’m hitting the big 40 in December (presents are welcome), and my mother turns 62 in January. My landladies, a nice lesbian couple, are both in their late 60s and will vote Obama (even though one was a fervent HRC supporter).

I guess I just don’t understand the reasoning behind someone who calls themselves a Democrat but won’t vote for Obama because of his race, or because HRC didn’t get the nomination. It makes no sense – you CANNOT claim to be a Democrat and vote for Walnuts. The Republicans cannot be allowed to hold onto power for another 4-8 years – if they do, I really feel America as it used to be will be gone completely.

Also, I may have convinced her that my dad would never have voted for McCain/Palin. All of the mendacity coming from the Repugnicants gave me an opening to remind her of another of my dad’s maxims, “Some people had rather climb a tree to lie than stand on the ground to tell the truth.”

First let me blow the bullshit argument about black people voting for Barack Obama because he’s black out of the window. If this race were say between John Edward (D) and Clarence Thomas (R) I will fucking put my head on the chopping block that blacks would vote for John Edwards. So again, to say that most blacks are voting for Barack Obama “just because he’s black” is fucking bullshit. Now with that said, they’re voting for Barack Obama for the same reason that a lot of White and Latino people are, they’re “mad as hell and they’re not going to take this anymore!!” A vote for John McCain is the equivalent of going to a surgeon who’s being sued for malpractice to operate on you. I really feel bad for a lot of the white women that are being labeled for the actions of the really stupid ones. I really feel that when most of these white women step in that voting booth, think of facts like; when Bill Clinton left office we were at peace (we’re at war), gas was about .99 a gallon (it’s now 3.89), there was a huge quality job increase of over 25 million new jobs, (more than twice that many have been lost), Small business was booming at an alarming rate (now they’re folding by the second), everyone who was getting mortgages and heading toward home ownership that had no problem paying these mortgages (now they’re losing their homes). Trust me this list could go on and on, but I don’t think that white women will be as dumb as everyone is polling them to be come November 4th, of course some will be, just there will be a bunch of dumb white men as well who’ll vote for more of the same. But for the most part they’ll quickly come to their senses and have that moment of clarity and push the button, or punch the card for Obama.

[re=104034]AnnieGetYourFun[/re]: I did. I’m not on-site as much as the majority of Wonkette… too much to do during the day, and I work at a restaurant during the dinner shift… I think I had three or four days last week where I wasn’t on at all.

Oy, I gotta take a break. I’m in bad headspace for snarking, and I don’t want to offend again.

[re=103901]FlakJack[/re]: YES! You’ve nailed it. Alaska’s white trash governor gives racists an excuse they can say out loud for not voting for Obama…but, but those people never would have voted for Obama in the first place. Besides, I think most Americans in this day and age hate the Old more than they hate the Black. And as for dumb failed beauty queens…that’s usually something you date, not something you marry.

Hey, just a thought. and it’s not like it could happen, but what the hell kept Barry from picking, oh, say, anyone other than Hillz (think: Barney Frank), then let McSame pick Michelle Bachmann’s crazy ass lil’ sis. Afterwards, Barry could say, “just kidding. Barney Frank wants to keep butt-sexin’ in Mass.” and then actually pick whomever would destroy McWalnuts’ ridiculous & cynical pick.

[re=103848]ManchuCandidate[/re]: Married, middle-class white women don’t want to admit that in their wild, [piss-off-the-parents] rebel years they “dated” John Redcorn, or his equivalent, whom ‘you couldn’t bring home to mutha’ (to quote the much mourned, at least by me, deceased poet Rick James). And they don’t want their daughters to repeat their same “experiment“.

Long/short: they saw their bad boyfriend as a temporary trip to lalaland and as an available ploy to get their parents to agree to birth control. They are aghast at the thought that their female spawn would adventure without their own clawback to middle class certainty. From the perspective of their teen years, they are still unable to distinguish their supposed naughtiness from the immaterial.

TexasCowGirl September 22, 2008 at 11:05 pm

So it comes to this, eh white wimmins? Barry is going to have to personally sex up all of the white wimmins who seem to have temporarily lost their minds. I know Michelle won’t like it, but damnit it’s not about her. This is about the fate of the nation and it is her patriotic duty to allow Barry to do this. Besides she’s had him for nearly 20 years all to herself and got two beautiful kids so she can share. Just a little chocolate lovin’ is all the white wimmins need.

As a woman of the white persuasion, I have spent the last 18 thousand months being told that I luuuuurrrve Hillary Clinton more than my first best girlfriend who taught me how to paint my toenails but now absent her I luuuuuuurrrrrrve Sarah Palin more than even my second best girlfriend who taught me how to smoke cigarettes behind the mall.

Funny thing is, no one has ever actually ASKED me if I lurve either of them, except that one time in the voting booth when, in a fascinating turn of events, I did not check the box next to “My Bestest Gal Pal who is not the Black Dude”.

If there’s one thing this white woman loves more than nail polish and cigarettes, it’s being told incessantly by the media what she thinks about things! It’s so empowering!

Redhead September 23, 2008 at 9:03 am

Yay, McCain-Palin! Because you know, after I’m raped (and after I’m done sighing about how great it was) I want to fork over $1,600 for my own rape kit. Less money for the rape-child I won’t have any chance of aborting, whether I’m 40 or 14! I just hope the rapist doesn’t come back and try to beat me and my rape-child, cause I know I won’t get any help then since domestic violence isn’t important enough to do anything about. But that’s okay, cause women enjoy it anyway, right?

ugggggggggggg. Just…. uggggggg.

Oh hell to the no September 23, 2008 at 10:50 am

Why doesn’t anyone talk about the reverse-Bradley effect? You know, the one where white women vote for the black man, just to spite their parents?

Danny September 23, 2008 at 12:45 pm

I don’t know how you folks can seriously discuss Obama. Myself a Jew, a find him a familiar type of self-hating Muslim (more here http://samsonblinded.org/blog/obama-against-jewishness.htm ). He abandoned his roots, betrayed his religion, sides frantically with anyone from radical Christians to liberal Jews. From a nation of 300 million, cannot you find a president?

OzoneTom September 23, 2008 at 5:31 pm

White wimmen are just as stupid as normal people.

ssphds September 23, 2008 at 9:29 pm

White women flock to Palin, African Americans flock to Obama, but no one calls it out (at least no politician). This is a perfect example of how the explicit discrimination of early 1900′s and years before has changed to more implicit in recent years.
In my current political science class we have recently learned about how racism towards blacks in particular has changed of the past century. The norm of the 1920′s and 30′s was blatant racism and discrimination. Politicians went out of their way to appear racist so they could appease the masses. Now the opposite is true. If a politician made a blatant discriminatory remark about someone it would be political suicide. So instead of blatantly using race some now turn to more implicit methods of bringing forth racial feelings to voters. With African-Americans in particular this often includes pictures of blacks when talking about crime or poverty. Viewers or listeners often will feel negatively towards in this case, African-Americans. If another politician calls them out on it however, people will usually reverse the effects because they do not want to feel racist. When I was helping to control the crowd when my local Obama HQ was passing out tickets for an event a white man came up to me and starting complaining about the line. The line was huge, as expected, and filled with mostly African-Americans, also to be expected in my area. The man made several racist comments using “them” and other racially charged remarks towards the crowd. Chances are, if I pointed out the possibility that I thought his remarks were racist out loud he would deny it and ramble off some excuses of what he meant. I doubt he wanted to be labeled a racist although the image of the long line of poorer African-Americans made him feel that way. While most debate on this issue surrounds racism towards African-Americans, it probably extends beyond that.
As women flock to McCain-Palin many wonder what is really pushing them in that direction. Many come up with excuses such as in original blog, that they are more approachable and easier to relate to. This is ironic as both Obama’s came from very poor backgrounds, with Barack being raised by his single mother or his Grandmother. McCain and Palin on the other hand come from more well off families, especially with McCain who was from a family with a tradition as high Navy officers. Even with this white woman seem to be persuaded by the fact that Palin is another white woman. This favoritism towards Palin is helped along by the fact that she is a white woman, although many will not admit it. White women are not “all awful and should be thrown in Gitmo…: but they are like the rest of us, persuaded unknowingly by less than blatant uses of discrimination.
