The Denver Road Is A-Goin’ To Melt

  • Republicans are crashing the Dems’ convention, and Democrats will crash the GOP convention, due to the end of civility and the rise of dumb hate. [New York Times]
  • Tonight: Twisted psychodrama as Hillary and her supporters maybe sort of don’t entirely 100% say “You complete me” to Obama, because there’s never been candidate rivalry at a Democratic convention before (except for the other times). [Associated Press/U.S. News]
  • Russia has officially recognized the pro-Russia breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which are currently part of Georgia. This means (cold) war. [Washington Post]
  • Yikes: A fourth dirtbag has been arrested in the “Kill Obama at the Stadium” plot. [CBS 4 Denver]
  • The sirens and ruckus you didn’t hear in Denver’s Civic Center Park around 7 o’clock last night? DNC protesters were attacking, uh, trees on 15th Street. [Rocky Mountain News/Denver Post]
  • Home prices are still dropping, but not as much as last quarter, so the housing collapse may or may not be nearly over. [Bloomberg]
  • Barack Obama must prove to America that he’s somehow a normal American, without offending the “Muslim socialist vampire lesbian community.” [Dave Barry]

  1. Aren’t we the rise of dumb hate?

All this and Kevin Duckworth died.

    RIP, big man.

Okay, so they caught another redneck with a sniper rifle. How many of these guys are still out there with the intention of “voting from the rooftops”?

Fuck me I’m starting to freak out about the possibility of a Biden administration. Or maybe Hillary’s getting the nomination after all.

“He don’t belong in political office. Blacks don’t belong in political office. He ought to be shot,” Johnson told Maass.

    Post-racial what? Jesus fuck.

  6. Sean O: No, we are the rise of smart hate. Or at least hate-of-above-average-intelligence.

    “Please, shoot me.”
    That about sums it up.

Godless Liberal *: I have no idea what to do with that but it’s not *that* far from Harriet Christian’s “inadequate black male” line. Strategically, if you’re the Obama people, what do you do with this stuff?

  8. Holy crap. Cletus from the Simpsons is a real person? And he wants to kill Barack Obama?

  9. Godless Liberal *: He said “blacks” instead of a bunch of other stuff. progress!

Sean O: You know what? You’re right. Dr. King would be proud that we (and by “we” I mean “they”) are saying “black” instead of “uppity nigger” when we plot to kill successful black people. And hey, a high-powered rifle instead of a rope and a tall tree! Pretty soon we’ll be making eye contact in broad daylight.

    Godless Liberal *:

Seriously, this attitude is prevalent in the deep South. I’m not saying it’s the dominant attitude among white Southerners, but you don’t have to scratch the surface very hard before it starts bubbling up through the cracks.

The only potential downside, IMHO, to an Obama presidency is that the moment Obama is elected you’ll start hearing a massive, unified chorus from the usual right-wing suspects about how this proves that there no such thing as racism in America… despite the fact that Obama will be lucky to get 25% of the white, male vote nationally, and 10% in the South.

I guess all those afterschool specials where someone takes drugs and then jumps out a sixth storey window were right.

Nathan Johnson was Steve Martin’s character in “The Jerk”.

Vampire lesbians? Actually, that explains a lot…

“Muslim Socialist Vampire Lesbians” sounds like a movie I’d watch.

Much more than the “PUMAs Gone Wild” shit we’ll be forced to watch tonight.

Actually, I choose not watch. If I don’t watch, it’s not really happening, right?

  15. Holy shit. Did anyone see the pictures of those two hillbillies? Their lack of teeth is not that apparent because the fuckers aren’t smiling. They look so much like those who still drive around with “W04″ bumper stickers on the back of their pick up trucks it’s not even funny.

Serolf Divad: I grew up in Alabama (not the good part)(there’s a good part?) and I live right now in South Carolina. I could drive five miles and see a Confederate flag flying proudly on the lawn of the Statehouse, in a state whose population is over 30% black. It’s been my own thirty-year lifelong experience that the attitude itself is prevalent, but it’s all talk. You might say you hate them colored folk, and maybe you do, but it’s more out of habit than an actual conviction. It’s something passed down through the generations, like an old watch or that vacant, slack-jawed stare that can only come from inbreeding.

It’s always going to be there, because it’s so deeply ingrained in your upbringing, but it’s also an illusion that’s easily enough deflated upon meeting an actual black person and discovering that he does not rape your white wimmins and holds a steady job. And while you might go the rest of your life holding onto that general mistrust, perhaps whispering secretly to others like you, you don’t drive halfway across the country with three like-minded individuals hellbent on silencing a man whose only apparent crime in your eyes is having a black parent and not spending his life in service to you.

There is a certain level of racism that, while terrible, is a simple fact of life in many regions even today, and trying to change that is like trying to make water stop being wet. And you know, I could even accept it if they came to Denver to shoot Obama because they are staunchly opposed to their children having health care, or whatever, but this is too much. I hardly know how to even react.

    Godless Liberal *:

Southern racism is an absurdly complicated thing. I know since half my family is from South Carolina, I’ve been vacationing there regularly since I was a kid, and I’ve lived in the state also for a couple of years. There’s a lot of truth to the old saying that Southerners hate the black race, but love blacks as individuals. I’ve met ornery old men in wheelchairs who couldn’t stop saying nasty things about blacks, civil rights and black politicians, but who could seemingly only find comfort when attended to by a black nurse… it’s the whole “mammy” thing. I have white-trash relatives who grew up best friends with black children and still love their friends dearly, but who have no compunction railing against “lazy niggers” if they pull up to a McDonalds staffed by black employees and don’t get their food as quickly as they’d like. These are the people that I just could never imagine voting for a black man, even if they wouldn’t give a second though to hiring or working alongside a black man.

Of course you’ve also got the psycho racist white supremacists like these two. But then, you find those nutcases everywhere.

I heard a comedian say that the difference between the North and South in the US. In the North, people say that folks of all races are equal, but they won’t live next door to them. In the South, people say other races are inferior, but live and work around them.

I lived in the South for years. Yes, there is still racism. But there is still plenty of racism in other regions, such as those fading coal towns in the Alleghanies and places like rural Michigan. Just has a different varnish on it.

For the record, if someone were to shoot Dave Barry, he did ask for it at the end of his vampire lesbian column. Not that I’m advocating anything, I’m just saying that the opportunity has presented itself.

In late-breaking news, George Herbert Walker Bush thinks of himself as a British Israelite, only with a delicious twist: he’s not really Jewish. Also, former Wonkette Ana Marie Cox was an incredibly influential American writer in the ’90s, and is related to Archibald Cox. Finally, Firefox don’t work no more.

DENVER (AP) - Three men who authorities feared were plotting to assassinate Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Denver are facing only gun charges.

Terry: “In the North, people say that folks of all races are equal, but they won’t live next door to them. In the South, people say other races are inferior, but live and work around them.

Sigh. So basically there is no region from which hope for true racial equality springeth? Growing up in St. Louis, I saw a little of both. There were (and are) small sections of the city and mid-county where people of various races lived and worked together and actually got along, but for the most part, we - like many large metropolitan areas - were segregated so that white folks ended up in the suburbs and black folks were in the city. People who claim that racism is dead and that no conflict still exists are f*ing blind.
