OK, so if I’ve got this right, there’s a couple of hundred giddy Wonketteers who think this is great news, a few fence sitters, and the unimpressed include only [re=67650]shortsshortsshorts[/re]:, [re=67695]sanantonerose[/re]: and yours truly. Clearly, the “yeas” have it.

First, I’m thrilled with the company I’m keeping, slim though it might be.

Second, this ain’t about what appeals to me, but what might appeal to the voters, and I don’t think Joe’s gonna do either of the two things I hoped Hopey’s pick would do: re-energize his own base, and/or steal votes that otherwise would register for the Repugnicans.

Third, as I stated above, I don’t mind Joltin’ Joe in the slightest. But he’s not the head-snapping gamechanger I had hoped to see carrying Hopey’s golfclubs. I could be very, very wrong [and I truly, fervently hope that I am], but I share shorts’ and rose’s cynicism about this.

Finally, while I usually drink and toke daily, Saturday nights are reserved for the party-so-hard-I-hurt-myself variety. I really do love all you guys, but now I must go blind myself in that special this-Saturday-will-make-all-others-seem-tame-by-comparison fashion that I had hoped wouldn’t be necessary. If you never hear from me again, you’ll know why.

I’m happy. Of course, I was one of the eight or so people who was thrilled about Biden’s presidential candidacy way back when…

Two good things come out of this. First, Biden’s going to slaughter anyone the GOP nominates for the veep spot, and he’ll talk trash about WALNUTS! 24/7. Secondly, this will force the jackasses who claim that they can’t vote for Barry because of his “limited foreign policy experience” (on the other hand, Juan’s total lack of economic and social policy understanding is A-OK with them) to shut the hell up. This will force the racists to admit to their prejudices rather than hide in euphemistic policy terms. Good pick!

Hmm. All around, pretty pleased by the VP pic and by today’s introductory speeches. But I do have a few notes:

a) Obama, you need to stop checking the text messages Michelle keeps sending you during Biden’s speeches. I saw your hand go in and out of your pants pocket about 20 times. I know, hard to resist when she says “not wearing panties…me luv u lng time l8r”, but for the sake of the nation, try to look interested

b) Biden, invest in hair spray

c) Neither of you can say “my friends” during a speech. It’s trademarked by WALNUTS LLC, Inc.

d) Biden, if you saw “literally” one more time I’m going to mail you a gift basket filled with poison ivy tea

e) Jill – you are too cute for Hilltard matching blazer business sets. Please go shopping with your new bff Michelle (I saw you holding hands, you cuties you) so you can show off the cool casual femininity that’s hidden by all the polyester

So Obama admits he can’t run the country by himself and picks a Vice President. What a loser. Oh, I guess he can be king of Europe, but the US is just too much for him to handle. I guess the next thing he’ll do is start selecting cabinet members so he can get away with doing even less work!

And Joe Biden. This guy is the 2nd poorest senator we have. He only has one house and it’s in friggin’ Wilmington, DE – the taint of the Delaware Valley. If this guy was actually corrupt, we could pass a hat and buy him off. The Dems like to talk up his ethics, saying he takes a train home to his wife every night – I guess hair plugs aren’t the babe magnet they used to be in DC. Oh, and by the way, this is his SECOND wife. Just wait ’til Fox News gets a hold of his firs… ohhhh.. I see, uh..nevermind.

For all the Bidenbitters, I’m still left wondering who this “game-changing” alternative would’ve been. If Hillz, forget it. The same goes for all of the usual tripe about choosing a “Washington outsider.” Bayh is a centrist democrat, i.e. a conservative. Probably a good strategy for taking Indiana, sure, but a long-term sacrifice in the White House. Sebelius? Really impressive, actually, but she was hardly going to win Kansas for Obama, and as for winning back resentful Hilltards (can we introduce a parliamentary system already, please?), November would’ve come and gone before half of them had any inkling of who Sebelius is. What would the use have been there? That leaves Reed, whose military background would’ve been an effective counter to WALNUTS! the Gaydarin’ P.O.W., but in that case why not go all the way, ditch the vague gesture towards foreign policy and machismo and pick Joe?

This decision reflects a more realistic tack in Obama’s thinking, and one that didn’t involve another lurch to the right, thank god. I prefer a more pragmatic, aggressive Barack, myself, somebody with concrete designs for winning in November, not just a cultural phenomenon content to float into electoral defeat with a lot of fluffy talk about change.

Please to explain me WTF? Really does BHO really want to win Delaware (or is it Rhode Island) that bad. How exactly does Biden, who is otherwise a nice guy, help BHO get elected? That is the goal, getting elected, yeah?

As much as people say they hate politicians, they want politicians at election time. Not only has Biden been in Washington forever, he’s campaigned around the country twice. So he can talk to the farmers about subsidies, and then go into urban centers and talk about offender reentry, and go to the burbs an talk about lowering the tax burden and improving education, and then go to the Jews and say what they need to hear about Israel. Look at Wesley Clark in 2004. He had an Obama-esque aura around him until he had to do campaign events and couldn’t speak coherently about domestic issues. He sank like a stone.

It didn’t have to be Biden in particular, but he’ll do.

Biden also polls remarkably well with the olds and the indies.

Just thinking out loud: the Biden pick shores up two of Barry’s supposed weaknesses by adding foreign policy cred and a more aggressive speaking presence. By the same logic, WALNUTS!’ veep pick needs to be a respectable economic thinker with some domestic policy experience and decent public speaking skills. Being female and non-ancient would be a bonus. Can anyone think of who that could be besides the Mittster (who brings his own huge set of problems)? Myself, I’m stumped.

Over very spicy lasagna tonight, my dinner companions were discussing how we all grew up with Biden on the Sunday morning teevee. We grew up in politically diverse households, but all recognize Biden (however we feel as rational adults about his politics) as a political constant in a time of whatevs: He has always been there, yapping away. His opinion, whatever it was, has always been broadcast, so presumably it should have mattered to us (well, less so since cable, and even less so since the internets). But, it always mattered to him, and he was always honest (at least, by DC standards). So, hats off to him.

Maybe what the Obama campaign really needed was human flaws, and Biden was a way to assure them, in a measured way. (Shakespeare, LOLZ)

Finally. I don’t think I’ve been on here for a month. I keep seeing all this crap about Joe Biden as Obama’s VP pick. Now, there is a ticket that looks backwards! He didn’t really even vet Hillary. My prescriptions of Diazepam, Codeine Sulfate, Tincture of Opium and over-the-counter-NyQuil have softened the blow a little. (Oh, and four cups of chocolate pudding.)

You say, well, not a lot really, but: “Anyway, welcome Joe Biden! You will fuck this up in a hundred ways, tomorrow.” You are such an optimist! I thought he did a good job of starting that today, but with my mix of drugs (all legal), I’m happy to vote for Midge, even if he doesn’t know when his next feeding is or how many houses, condos and nursing homes Cindy owns. Thankfully the US Open is the next two weeks, giving me a little time to digest this turn of events. I don’t think is particularly wise to pick a better VP than you would be president.

So I got an e-mail today from MoveOn, who had their panties in a bunch over a recent AP editorial by one Ron Fournier. The MoveOn team were upset that the AP had engaged in what they termed a “smear” of the newly minted Obama-McCain campaign. It seemed that Mr. Fournier’s sin (aside from being a McCain flack) was pointing out Mr. Obama’s mad dash to the right/center–hardly a smear in my book.

What follows is my open letter to MoveOn over said “smear.”. Enjoy:

Dear Mr. Green and the rest of “the team,”

I’m not a fan of Ron Fournier or of John McCain, but it seems every time an editorial fails to sing hosannas about the Obama campaign, I get an email from the wolf-PAC that cries “Smear!” In light of Mr. Obama’s vote in support of FISA and choosing a running mate whose record of supporting the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq (not to mention the lies that got us there) is well documented, and several other shifts to the right (or were they really shifts at all?), I do not find it the least bit inappropriate to call the Democratic nominee out for his embrace of the status quo. Given the amount of cash that Wall Street has pumped into the Obama campaign, I won’t be surprised when I see a great deal of status quo, no matter who wins the (s)election in November.

Please keep me on your subscriber list. Since I quit watching TV, it’s some of the best entertainment going.
