Well, whatever. Also, we still haven’t received our TXT announcement. Clogged in the tubes, etc. Anyway, welcome Joe Biden! You will fuck this up in a hundred ways, tomorrow. [BarackObama.com]

I bet the final deciding point was that “BIDEN” has 5 letters and looks good in sans-serif.

NotUrEvryDayWEzl August 23, 2008 at 3:48 am

[re=67498]TJBeck[/re]: They’ve claimed most of the vowels too. But U sucks and Y is a tranny, so who cares.

TJBeck August 23, 2008 at 3:49 am

I guess the real questions is – WTF do I do with all this Jack Reed stock I got on Intrade?

NotUrEvryDayWEzl August 23, 2008 at 3:54 am

[re=67503]TJBeck[/re]: my dad always says that over the long term the markets always grow. just hold on to it for 8 years.

Harmless August 23, 2008 at 3:54 am

Obama is already president of graphic design. But, in the above graphic the names are actually serif. See how he brings the fonts togethe?. Also, I’m still drunk.

Darehead August 23, 2008 at 3:55 am

Nice teeth, nice tie. He’ll be a good vice-anti-Christ!

lumpenprole August 23, 2008 at 3:56 am

Isn’t the blue tie a Bush era thing?

[re=67506]NotUrEvryDayWEzl[/re]: Over the long haul, what matters is the dividend, right?

lumpenprole August 23, 2008 at 4:00 am

[re=67507]Harmless[/re]:
The gradient is very cool. Iconic.

Also, nicely balanced with the Obama-rise logo – a trinity. I’m drunk.

Edward Bulwer-Lytton August 23, 2008 at 4:00 am

Hey…between ‘Punjab-gate’ and ‘Nice-clean-articulate-black-man-gate’, Biden is a winner w/ a capital W.

TJBeck August 23, 2008 at 4:07 am

[re=67507]Harmless[/re]: No, the logo is serif, but the giant “JOE BIDEN” at the top of that graphic is the campaign’s signature font (CHANGE WE CAN BELEIVE IN, HILLARY IS A CUNT etc).

Everyone looks good in Serif font. Even Lieberman.

worstprezever August 23, 2008 at 4:07 am

Poor Obama’s staff’s gonna be up all night & all day tomorrow. Then it’s convention week!!

No rest for the weary.

[re=67512]TJBeck[/re]: Only buy stocks with dividends. the rest are like fictitious oil wells… exciting for the dumb populace but never producing a single ounce black obama gold

New image on BarackObama.com shows the tie better. I think that’s actually a Snoopy tie.

Great news! This will ensure that the Dems clinch the battleground state of Delaware. Well done again!

NYNYNY August 23, 2008 at 4:46 am

Let the world know, this is my great anagram: Obama/Biden = A bomb, an IED. I’m so happy.

I don’t know whether that’s scary, funny, or pie.

The Hispanic Buddy Holly August 23, 2008 at 4:55 am

I just got the text message from Barry! We’re like best friends, so, of course he told me first!

Wait…the whole world knew for like a month before my text?

junkscience August 23, 2008 at 5:35 am

I never got the txt. I’m disappointed, but also kinda drunk. Did I need to sign up?

Yay Hopey and Talky. Keep reaching for that rainbow.

slavojzizek August 23, 2008 at 5:35 am

Thanks for your extensive coverage of this non-story. Now what are we all doing commenting on a post in the wee hours of the morning?

Darehead August 23, 2008 at 5:53 am

[re=67536]slavojzizek[/re]: So, what time is it in Slovenia?

ronaldpagan August 23, 2008 at 6:27 am

Hi, completely drunk, got the post. Biden’s got foreign policy experience (although didn’t that cunt vote to authorize the Iraq war). Hopefully dude knows a thing or two about economics. This is going to be a total hip good cop/racist bad cop type scene.

The Real JR Revisted August 23, 2008 at 6:36 am

i love how obv it is that everyone was totally wasted while commenting.

i love all of you.

gurukalehuru August 23, 2008 at 6:38 am

Biden’s long winded and can stick his foot in his mouth occasionally, but he’s not her.
Biden’s an arrogant, East coast elitist, but he’s not her.
Biden may represent a state that we were going to win anyway, but he’s not her.
Biden is clearly a compromise with the right wing of the Democratic party, but he’s not her.

We can rejoice on this wonderful, wonderful day!

ronaldpagan August 23, 2008 at 6:38 am

[re=67528]NYNYNY[/re]: Obama/Biden = Baa, Demo Bin.

ronaldpagan August 23, 2008 at 6:40 am

And I love all of you, real JR! When you’re drinking with people who don’t even know who Biden is, it is nice to come back to Wonkette and spend an intoxicated Saturday morning sizing up the VP decision.

Makeithurt August 23, 2008 at 6:41 am

I like turtles.

SkimLatteModerate August 23, 2008 at 6:47 am

I think I’m still drunk. But that’s not the reason it’s so confusing? I got no text. And even if I did, at 3 am right after we got sent home? Come on now.

It’s okay ’cause it’s JoBo though.

TGY August 23, 2008 at 6:48 am

Well, thank God that’s over. Now go back to bed, you alcoholics. Also, drink lots of fluids to prevent dehydration. And remember: Oreo cookies and beer don’t mix (except possibly with Turbodog). Try Oreos and a white Russian, instead.

Shmucky DeFukhed August 23, 2008 at 6:57 am

Given McCain’s penchant for pissing off the Republicans, wouldn’t it be funny if he picked Hillary for veep?

WonkaBee August 23, 2008 at 7:10 am

the instant lame jump by the mccain camp has assured me that john has no elvis in him

cal August 23, 2008 at 7:11 am

With Lieberman as McCain’s running mate, we can look forward to the great “Joe vs. Joe” debate.

Get your tickets now!

Darehead August 23, 2008 at 7:12 am

[re=67549]Shmucky DeFukhed[/re]: It would be funny. But seriously, if Hillz or another pro-choicer, he’d possibly gain the bitterz but lose the fundies–and he hasn’t even won over the fundies yet, not entirely. Mehumblythinks he’s gonna go for the fundies.

lawrenceofthedesert August 23, 2008 at 7:15 am

[re=67543]gurukalehuru[/re]: “Biden’s a compromise with the right wing of the Democratic Party.” Hey, Obama is a Daley Democrat; the Chicago Machine IS the right wing of the Democratic Party, if it has one.

Get Biden my favorite German tavern sign, “Be sure brain is engaged before putting mouth in motion,” and wish them luck. Electing a black president is going to be really tough work. The oil companies will spend like sailors to elect McCain’t. After eight years of a guy who makes Warren Harding look like Thomas Jefferson, we need a break.

glamourdammerung August 23, 2008 at 7:17 am

As long as it was anyone that was not Hillary, it would be fine.

SuperRounder August 23, 2008 at 7:22 am

[re=67555]glamourdammerung[/re]: Exactly. I’ve never been so happy to be so wrong about something.

Cogito Ergo Bibo August 23, 2008 at 7:31 am

Dammit. Went to bed after the leak, but before the text. I wake up and it’s still Biden. Sigh. Was so hoping for a total press fake-out where he actually did tell his supporters first. No love, Barry. No love.

But at least I’m still a teency weency bit drunkie, so that’s something!

Delicious August 23, 2008 at 7:38 am

All Hail OBiden.

Clancy_Pants August 23, 2008 at 7:43 am

Glad it was an e-mail and not a text. I’d have been PO’d to get buzzed awake at 3am for the “news”.:. I hope it was the “successful dump!” comment that put him over the top.

yellowbug August 23, 2008 at 8:04 am

Nobody seems to be picking up on the symbolism of the 3 am call. I think it’s clever. Annoying, but clever.

BTW I am so excited Joe Biden is on the ticket I am doing intermittent victory laps while typing this. I was born and raised in the piratical state of Delaware, and supported him through many configurations of hair plugs. Also, I met him twice and he was rad.

Clancy_Pants August 23, 2008 at 8:06 am

I leaked after I went to bed. But that’s pretty common on Fridays.

MargeSimpsonsBlackFriend August 23, 2008 at 8:17 am

[re=67569]yellowbug[/re]: I think the 3 AM release is a punch in Hillary’s face and an F-U to the Pumatards and damnit I like it.

Godless Liberal * August 23, 2008 at 8:19 am

Ah, hell. If nothing else, the next two months and change will be entertaining as hell.

Darehead August 23, 2008 at 8:30 am

Hear ye hear ye, we commenterati were discussing “wouldn’t be cool if he announced at 3 a.m.” something like 30+ hours ago so I think Obama, he dun hurd us.

RooseveltFranklin August 23, 2008 at 8:32 am

Biden can turn Cheney’s basement dungeon of horrors into a stem cell hair plug farm run by Sy Sperling.

Canmon (the Inadequate) August 23, 2008 at 8:35 am

He’s very knowledgable on foreign affairs so I like the pick. Am I the only one who saw “Obama Biden” this morning and thought it said “Osama Bin Laden” for a split second?

WonkaBee August 23, 2008 at 8:36 am

Biden is known for riding Amtrak to work in DC from Delaware. A lot of folks I know have chatted with Joe on the train (though I haven’t had the honor). I don’t suppose he’ll be riding those rails now….

4tehlulz August 23, 2008 at 8:36 am

All we need now is a Romney pick by WALNUTS to set up the bestest VP debate in the history of the human race.

Can we discuss McCain’s veepedness now. I know the Dobson fundies are waiting on the seats of their fundy-undies waiting to see if McCain’s choice is fundie-correct. And if not, they will stay home or defect to Chuck über-theocrat Baldwin.

What about the last remaining remnants of the anti-McCain neoconnerati, like Coulter, Malkin, Limbaugh etc.– do they still await his veep choice, or are they going to stay home no matter who is veeped, or follow Corsi, Novak etc to Paultardation (Baldwin)? Anyone know?

tyrantkitty August 23, 2008 at 8:55 am

Wonkette, I registered (finally) just for this: please please please give us a Children’s Treasury of crazy Joe Biden photos. I love imagining this ticket like some sort of wacky sitcom duo, like Andy Griffith and Gomer Pyle.

choinski August 23, 2008 at 8:56 am

All hail Obama Bin Biden!

tyrantkitty August 23, 2008 at 8:59 am

Argh, I’m almost double-posting, but CNN’s lady in a blazing pink satin shirt just said “overnight, Obama tapped Joe Biden.” Well, oh my. Is this why we had to wait until 3 AM for the text?

Biden rocks. He’s Bill Clinton a generation before Bill Clinton, the catholic Bill Clinton.

Hopester will have to counter the wingnuts who think going with someone who’s an inside shows his lack of confidence. He should say “no, how do you change the thing unless you have someone close to you who knows the system?” Biden has spoken truth to power even when his party has gone soft. Biden should say “yeah, I said stupid stuff. I’m a white guy, who like the rest of Bozo America will learn from BO how to deal with the future.” In fact Biden’s previous gaffes will probably help him in the stupedo states.

Taking out the trash indeed.

MrAgro August 23, 2008 at 9:37 am

[re=67586]tyrantkitty[/re]: MSNBC keeps showing all of these ancient Biden pics from the glorious 1980s where Biden was a dapper brunette but still had his same hairline. So odd.

Canuckledragger August 23, 2008 at 9:46 am

Colour me underwhelmed. I likes me some Joe B. as much as the next wonk…. decent enough guy, good record on [most of] the issues, articulate and charming when he’s not sporting the Billy Idol sneer or doing a verbal faceplant.

But, really?

The average voter doesn’t even know who the dude is, which after 36 years in the Senate isn’t too helpful to the cause. If he carries his own state, which he will ‘coz it’s true blue, what’s that earn in the electoral college? Two votes and a mule? How’s Hopey gonna sell his “change the way Washington works” thingie with a guy who’s been helping run that mess for longer than Hopey’s base has been alive?

So the big dividend here is it’s not Hillz? BFD. [On the other hand, when the lone gunmen strike, at least it won't have been obviously arranged courtesy of BHO's own Veep, which one can't say for Hillz.] This ain’t tossing a bone to the Bitters and will do nothing to woo that fucked faction.

Not. Good. Enough.

ForTheTurnstiles August 23, 2008 at 9:50 am

Okay, bears repeating:

GET BIDEN A FUCKING HAIRCUT. I have seen the future, and the future has no combovers.

I look forward to Biden kicking Romney in the nuts, by the way. That’ll be perfect.

[re=67605]ForTheTurnstiles[/re]: Oh yeah. Biden will clean Mitten’s clock and make him poop in his MMU’s (Magic Mormon Underoos).

loquaciousmusic August 23, 2008 at 9:55 am

[re=67604]Canuckledragger[/re]: Whom would you have chosen, then? I certainly agree with your points about Biden, but, with John Edwards out of the running, why not? My boy Chris Dodd would have been my choice, but apparently he’s not from a “swing state” or something and he probably likes elitist frappuccinos and drives a Prius. Kathleen Sebelius isn’t well known; Evan Bayh can’t even spell his last name; and Chet Edwards is named “Chet” and doesn’t want TEH GAYZ to be able to get married, cheat on each other with other GAYZ, and then get divorced.

Hopey’s message of “change” can only go so far. The dude has to get elected. And let’s just remember one thing: these McCain attacks on Joe Biden are going to backfire SO BADLY because Biden and McCain have both served in the Senate forever and ever and I’M RUBBER, YOU’RE GLUE, WHATEVER YOU SAY BOUNCES OFF ME AND STICKS TO YOU.

Also, when McCain picks Romney as his VP, we get to watch shit like this ALL THE TIME:

And despite the fact that everyone always said that Hillz won the debates (because Obama, Edwards and Clinton were the only ones anyone cared about), he won the debates.

Oh, and his son is going to Iraq– POW 30 years ago is nothing against your kid leaving for a war that you’re against. And he is the least wealthy person in the senate.

If you are camping, it’s okay to drink beer with your morning eggs, but if you’re in town, you kinda limited to vodka based fruit drinks. Bloody Mary, Screwdriver, Greyhound. Champagnes are better for Sunday mornings. Rum is best for vacations and boat trips. Stay away from red wines (white wines are fine, better with a garnish, fruit or cucumber) and the browns, no whiskey or rye in the am. (unless it’s all you got) I hope this helps. Cheers.

AngryBlakGuy August 23, 2008 at 10:33 am

…lets all count the reasons why Biden is awesome:

-Been in the senate so long he receives his mail on the floor

-Has pretty damn good voting record(excluding his Iraq vote)

-Great foreign policy experience

-Pretty damn good with the “one liners”

-Not afraid to tell you about yourself

-He is a refined “attack dog”, kinda like a pitbull that puts grey poupon on someone before it mauls them.

-He doesn’t have that pander-riffic personality *COUGH!* McCain *COUGH!* Mittens *COUGH!*

Joe Biden appears to be an EXCELLENT pick for Barack Obama.

And John McCain has a new ad in which he uses Joe Biden’s “loose lips” against Barack Obama. This one HURTS, folks:

I used to really *not like* Joe, cuz in the 80s the Dems were positive FP-idiots, smashing Toyotas and Toshibas and talking “Buy America” all over the place. But he’s evolved well. I thought he did great in the primary debates. And y’all are right, he’d be great to have a drink with.

As for John McWalnuts, if he had died in 2000, he would be mourned and memorialized all over the place more than Reagan now. McCain used to be very un-Bush, pro-choice etc.; I think a lot of folks (ahem…), comparing him to “W” as we all did in 2000, could be forgiven for liken’ him a bit. But the McCain-o-philes weren’t noticing how strange he had become. And by now, hey, the dude is…well, we all know.

Yes. Hope change hope hope hope change hope my ass.

DAMMIT Barry. I cannot hate you, but I wish to scold you. Can you imagine how long these speeches will be now? My God. Between the two of the the terrorist anti-Christ bible will receive its versus within days, maybe even hours.

loudmouthredhead August 23, 2008 at 11:45 am

Personally, I think Biden will be a great, and amusing, attack dog for Hopey. It’ll be fun to watch two old white men go at it (in a DEBATE, you sickos!). Plus, we now have comedic value on the Dem. ticket again.

[re=67654]loudmouthredhead[/re]: Biden has pissed so many people off…. and then also there’s the colorful “I will run with or against John McWALNUTS” comment he made while countering hopey. This is good for comedy, bad for campaign. BAD.

shortsshortsshorts August 23, 2008 at 12:00 pm

[re=67656]Darehead[/re]: Two hopeys? Oh Jeebus. This is bad. I really like Biden of yesterday. He was perfect in his little seat yelling and screaming while babbling on about idealistic principles. The veep thing really bothers me though. Biden is not Presidential. He should run with WALNUTS for gawd sakes. He’s a stain on this campaign and I don’t think this has any possibility of playing well for hope hope change change. We are so fucked. Biden thought of being VP:

“I am not running for Vice President. I would not accept it if anyone offered it to me. The fact is I would rather stay Chairman of the Foreign Relations committee than be Veep.”

FUCK. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.

No really. “Flip flopping” in the highest registers of politics. BAD. It’s like someone gave WALNUTS the tastiest ice cream cone ever, and he will now smear it all over Barry’s face.
Shit.

[re=67658]shortsshortsshorts[/re]: Thing is, remember when Jammakain was running out of money/supporters last summer and Rudy 9/11 was a sure bet? I’m pretty sure EVERY dem seeking the nomination said something flattering about McCain over the course of the campaign. He was the anti-Republican at the time.

Considering how much attention was given to the primaries, I think it would’ve been silly to go with anyone who didn’t already have months of (albeit minimal) exposure in debates/etc. And all of them would’ve come along with that baggage.

Ha! and I knew it, I knew it 4 years ago– flip-flopping has become OK now; Pastor Rick saith so. Cuz we all change our minds about some things. Think about what those idiot neocons have done (incl Pastor Rick) for chrissakes, NOT changing your mind and being stubborn and clinging to dogma are often far worse than flip-flopping.

this is definitely problematic. the guy has tried to run for president twice already and lost. people see him as too extreme/liberal for their taste and there go all the moderate voters. plus, like you’ve all said, delaware was going blue anyway.

[re=67660]shortsshortsshorts[/re]: plz 2 assplain teh hyperbole? This was a pragmatic, and wise, pick, and what all the pundits are already saying is true: Biden will actually bring something to the White House rather than serve a token function, sort of like if Cheney were principled instead of a sociopathic Nazi. Maybe this could even win back a few of the Clintards who’d been planning to vote for McCain and sacrifice the future of their country for petty political personalism. Furthermore, if this means Obama is going to tone down the Washington insider/outsider bullshit—sorry, but there’s no such thing as an “outsider” member of Congress, no matter how many lobbyists he or she has rebuffed—then more power to him. McCain and his VP are going to run a right-wing, nationalistic, substanceless campaign appealing to the basest, most thoughtless sentiments and resentments of American voters. Choosing a loud-mouthed, unapologetic foreign-policy veteran is going to be the best defense against that bullshit.

In all practicality, Biden would be a good pick. He does have that stinky “experience” thing and he’s been a very loud, principled Cheney type. But we’re talking about a campaign- an image. I would never deny this is politics as usual, but when you send an e-mail everyday advocating “hope change” (which has been the very center of Barry’s rising), you are pretty much fucking yourself when you pick someone whose been playing the game since he was 29 years of age. [re=67700]DoctorCulturae[/re]: Yes and we Wonketeers had proposed it the day before (ahh, never mind)
[re=67697]shortsshortsshorts[/re]:

Oh yeah, McCain’s brilliant pullout. All based on the idea that “Americans believe the war is winding down in an acceptable way…” or the number of US deaths is down etc. Nothing about how this has affected Iraqis, how many of them have died, or what others in the region think or when and how they want US troops to be pulled out. Obama does need a good advisor on going after the surge propaganda; he’s too nice.

The US has lost credibility; the US has no moral authority; we need to share the decision with others…this is what Biden is saying.

Cicada August 23, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Waaaaay back at the beginning of the primaries, Biden and Dodd were my two favorites. They were both really solid on policy, and I admired Biden’s chops with taking down the Bush administration. Plus, Biden is pretty stellar on education (hey, I teach for a living). But then the field narrowed, and I got hooked on the hope-juice.

Yeah- Biden was wrong on the Iraq vote, and the bankruptcy bill, but he’s been right on a lot too. Plus he’s a frickin’ pit bull, a must when Barry can’t afford to be the angry black man.

There’s also a good chance Ol’ Hair Plugs will give us some chuckle-fodder during the last few months of this dreary campaign.

Darehead August 23, 2008 at 1:56 pm

[re=67702]InsidiousTuna[/re]: OK, you’re right, and maybe McCain does now too. Not when, if even, but *how* is what I am concerned about. If there is no admission of moral failure or willingness to include all the regional parties and legitimate multilateral solutions then i fear the US will be hated even more for decades on end.

BaxterJones August 23, 2008 at 2:05 pm

I like Biden’s ability to attack his opponent (see his comments about Giuliani here — http://www.entertonement.com/collections/1701/Joe-Biden). I think this will allow Obama to take the high road while Biden says what everyone is thinking anyway. Great strategy.

Delicious August 23, 2008 at 2:07 pm

What I haven’t heard so far is what Biden obviously brings to the mix: His white face.

There’s a lot of people that haven’t bought into Obama because he’s the black guy. Now the campaign can change all the stickers and signs and buttons and posters and teevee ads and have a white guy there, too. This won’t change the hardcore haters, but I think this ticket will now begin to settle some of the misgivings that rational Democrats and Independents have about Obama. Now they can have someone who’s like “one of us.”

Hooray For Anything August 23, 2008 at 2:11 pm

[re=67705]Cicada[/re]: Yeah, Biden strikes me as the type of person who should be President if we had a sane way of electing people but we don’t. Also, Biden may have voted for the war but he (along with Lugar) tried to put the brakes on it from the geto and was one of the earliest critics of the war and unlike most of his Democratic compadres, he never wussed out when criticizing the war. Which is why he’s a pretty decent choice– the guy is maybe a little to fearless when it comes to talking about things.

[re=67723]DoctorCulturae[/re]: S. CON. RES. 37: I no expert on it but it sounds like media pundits inserted the ‘partition’–which does not even appear in the resolution!– and wrote about it all out of context, not understanding what federalism is, maybe, but also not considering that the ‘plan’ was pretty vague and basically calls on various multinational parties to come together and talk about political settlement (at least from my understanding and this wording):

“….calling on the international community, including countries with troops in Iraq, the permanent 5 members of the United Nations Security Council, members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and Iraq’s neighbors—to support an Iraqi political settlement based on federalism…”

All fundies think UN = Satan so I hope Olbermann makes them discuss this! The word almost never even comes out of McCain’s mouth because he thinks we still have the League of Nations.

One of the talking heads on CNN just disparaged Biden by saying he’s been on the public dole his entire life and has no idea how to run a company, meet payroll, etc. (these are things only repubs with huge tax breaks can relate to, apparently).

I can’t wait until somebody points out the same thing about John McCain.

So I did some reading up about Cindy McCain as she’s the financial brains (i.e.heiress) in that marriage. Hmm, they say she’s totally hands off at the company- they never even see her car in the parking lot. She just shows up to ask how much money was made that quarter, and how much can she take. Period. That’s even better than being on the gov’t dole.

For what its worth, my 79 year old Clintonista mother, is excited about the pick. She had never jumped on the Hopey Express, despite threats from us that she’d never see her grandkids again if she didn’t get on board. But I just got off the phone with her and she is happy as all get out and has even forgiven Keith Olberman. I was smitten with Jack Reed myself but the reality is that having two professors on the same ticket (adjunct or otherwise) probably wouldn’t have flown in these here United States. Actually, with the Republicans running a ticket that is so susceptible to sarcasm, having a Vice-Presidential candidate who majors in sarcasm is not a bad thing.

Alright, I don’t know if anybody’s mentioned this today, but the Clinton News Network is freaking insidious. Last night just after the Biden thing became certain, Larry “Crypt Keeper” King took a call. Naturally, the guy was totally a Hilltard who would never vote for Biden because of the plagiarism thing. Just now (6:45 EST), CNN’s top story is “Clinton supporters outraged”. Assholes. AND they are having the Republicans on every night of the DNC convention to analyze what happened that night.

The Incomparable Tiny Valdez August 23, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Thank god for Thorazine.

Cicada August 23, 2008 at 7:19 pm

[re=67806]irisheyes[/re]: Ha-ha a Hilltard won’t vote for Biden because of speech plagiarism, but has no problem with the Bosnia story fiasco? Those people are truly fantastic for their ability to evade logic.

MSNBC coverage was very much in the “Clinton supporters are happy” vein. CNN is probably just pissed that their favorite slow news day pundit fodder is going the way of the dodo. They really shouldn’t worry, I’m sure the “Dems divided” stories will continue as long as the PUMAs are willing to whore themselves out for publicity.

Canuckledragger August 23, 2008 at 7:20 pm

OK, so if I’ve got this right, there’s a couple of hundred giddy Wonketteers who think this is great news, a few fence sitters, and the unimpressed include only [re=67650]shortsshortsshorts[/re]:, [re=67695]sanantonerose[/re]: and yours truly. Clearly, the “yeas” have it.

First, I’m thrilled with the company I’m keeping, slim though it might be.

Second, this ain’t about what appeals to me, but what might appeal to the voters, and I don’t think Joe’s gonna do either of the two things I hoped Hopey’s pick would do: re-energize his own base, and/or steal votes that otherwise would register for the Repugnicans.

Third, as I stated above, I don’t mind Joltin’ Joe in the slightest. But he’s not the head-snapping gamechanger I had hoped to see carrying Hopey’s golfclubs. I could be very, very wrong [and I truly, fervently hope that I am], but I share shorts’ and rose’s cynicism about this.

Finally, while I usually drink and toke daily, Saturday nights are reserved for the party-so-hard-I-hurt-myself variety. I really do love all you guys, but now I must go blind myself in that special this-Saturday-will-make-all-others-seem-tame-by-comparison fashion that I had hoped wouldn’t be necessary. If you never hear from me again, you’ll know why.

Cheers!

I’m happy. Of course, I was one of the eight or so people who was thrilled about Biden’s presidential candidacy way back when…

Two good things come out of this. First, Biden’s going to slaughter anyone the GOP nominates for the veep spot, and he’ll talk trash about WALNUTS! 24/7. Secondly, this will force the jackasses who claim that they can’t vote for Barry because of his “limited foreign policy experience” (on the other hand, Juan’s total lack of economic and social policy understanding is A-OK with them) to shut the hell up. This will force the racists to admit to their prejudices rather than hide in euphemistic policy terms. Good pick!

John McClain August 23, 2008 at 7:45 pm

I hope Joe’s not just BIDEN his time til some crackpot takes a shot at Barry.

Goddammit, Barry’s little Freudian slipper scared the bejeezus outta me. Let’s just say my underroos ain’t so “clean & articulate” anymore.

CivicHoliday August 23, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Hmm. All around, pretty pleased by the VP pic and by today’s introductory speeches. But I do have a few notes:

a) Obama, you need to stop checking the text messages Michelle keeps sending you during Biden’s speeches. I saw your hand go in and out of your pants pocket about 20 times. I know, hard to resist when she says “not wearing panties…me luv u lng time l8r”, but for the sake of the nation, try to look interested

b) Biden, invest in hair spray

c) Neither of you can say “my friends” during a speech. It’s trademarked by WALNUTS LLC, Inc.

d) Biden, if you saw “literally” one more time I’m going to mail you a gift basket filled with poison ivy tea

e) Jill – you are too cute for Hilltard matching blazer business sets. Please go shopping with your new bff Michelle (I saw you holding hands, you cuties you) so you can show off the cool casual femininity that’s hidden by all the polyester

CivicHoliday August 23, 2008 at 7:51 pm

oops, d) supposed to read “say literally” not saw

Jingo August 23, 2008 at 7:56 pm

So Obama admits he can’t run the country by himself and picks a Vice President. What a loser. Oh, I guess he can be king of Europe, but the US is just too much for him to handle. I guess the next thing he’ll do is start selecting cabinet members so he can get away with doing even less work!

And Joe Biden. This guy is the 2nd poorest senator we have. He only has one house and it’s in friggin’ Wilmington, DE – the taint of the Delaware Valley. If this guy was actually corrupt, we could pass a hat and buy him off. The Dems like to talk up his ethics, saying he takes a train home to his wife every night – I guess hair plugs aren’t the babe magnet they used to be in DC. Oh, and by the way, this is his SECOND wife. Just wait ’til Fox News gets a hold of his firs… ohhhh.. I see, uh..nevermind.

Congratulations Joe Biden

All in all, despite our snark, a good couple of days for Barry.

chaseychasem August 23, 2008 at 8:32 pm

[re=67815]Joey Ratz[/re]: Totally.

For all the Bidenbitters, I’m still left wondering who this “game-changing” alternative would’ve been. If Hillz, forget it. The same goes for all of the usual tripe about choosing a “Washington outsider.” Bayh is a centrist democrat, i.e. a conservative. Probably a good strategy for taking Indiana, sure, but a long-term sacrifice in the White House. Sebelius? Really impressive, actually, but she was hardly going to win Kansas for Obama, and as for winning back resentful Hilltards (can we introduce a parliamentary system already, please?), November would’ve come and gone before half of them had any inkling of who Sebelius is. What would the use have been there? That leaves Reed, whose military background would’ve been an effective counter to WALNUTS! the Gaydarin’ P.O.W., but in that case why not go all the way, ditch the vague gesture towards foreign policy and machismo and pick Joe?

This decision reflects a more realistic tack in Obama’s thinking, and one that didn’t involve another lurch to the right, thank god. I prefer a more pragmatic, aggressive Barack, myself, somebody with concrete designs for winning in November, not just a cultural phenomenon content to float into electoral defeat with a lot of fluffy talk about change.

[re=67823]chaseychasem[/re]: You’re right. There is no game-changer (and I thought that was what McCain needed, not Obama). As much as people say they hate politicians, they want politicians at election time. Not only has Biden been in Washington forever, he’s campaigned around the country twice. So he can talk to the farmers about subsidies, and then go into urban centers and talk about offender reentry, and go to the burbs an talk about lowering the tax burden and improving education, and then go to the Jews and say what they need to hear about Israel. Look at Wesley Clark in 2004. He had an Obama-esque aura around him until he had to do campaign events and couldn’t speak coherently about domestic issues. He sank like a stone.

It didn’t have to be Biden in particular, but he’ll do.

CivicHoliday August 23, 2008 at 8:48 pm

[re=67821]Delicious[/re]: Ah…the bitters…yes, if it requires making Jill look 20 years older and covering up her biker body with PANTSUITS® and maybe even making her wear depends so her ass looks saggy and bloated so that old white housewives feel they’re ‘connected’ to her, than I suppose it is the price we must pay.

Cicada August 23, 2008 at 8:49 pm

[re=67825]Paul Tardy[/re]: It depends if you believe in the VP pick = regional strength theory or not. I don’t. We had good ol’ boy Edwards who couldn’t even carry his home state in 2004, after all. This isn’t about winning Delaware, it’s about the national security bona fides, throwing a bone to the “experience” question, and picking a guy with working class cred. Biden also polls remarkably well with the olds and the indies.

[re=67766]AxmxZ[/re]: All beneath a constant spray of sexual spittle.

Joey Ratz August 23, 2008 at 9:13 pm

Just thinking out loud: the Biden pick shores up two of Barry’s supposed weaknesses by adding foreign policy cred and a more aggressive speaking presence. By the same logic, WALNUTS!’ veep pick needs to be a respectable economic thinker with some domestic policy experience and decent public speaking skills. Being female and non-ancient would be a bonus. Can anyone think of who that could be besides the Mittster (who brings his own huge set of problems)? Myself, I’m stumped.

[re=67829]Cicada[/re]: I agree. Also, I never understood that ‘carry the home state’ logic. Why the hell would Bayh fans in Indiana vote for WALNUTS! in the first place? Surely Barry will make him Secretary of Agriculture or something like that; wouldn’t that be good enough for them Hoosiers?

The Incomparable Tiny Valdez August 23, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Mittens would add to the I’m-so-rich-I-have-multiple-homes problem. Who the fuck is there to bring WALNUTS! down from the I’m-so- rich-I-can’t-even-imagine-what-it’s-like-to-pump-my-own-gas perception? Huck Fuckaby, that’s who.

Fuck yeah Barack America

[re=67832]Joey Ratz[/re]: The only real explanation for home-state logic I can think of is that it picks up the local undecided voters who base their decisions on how many cats the candidate owns, what s/he will do to advance bowlers’ rights, are unsure whether they’re clinically dead or not, have no fucking clue what planet they’re on, etc.

Anyway, Cheney should be a wake-up call. Selecting a VP just to carry a swing state is an antiquated practice, and it would be totally obsolete if our eighteenth-century electoral college would go away already.

Worse than being rich, Romney’s being a Mormon will freak too many Jebus nuts come voting time. They won’t vote for Obama, but they’ll stay home rather than risk going to Hell for voting for Mittens.

So all Walnuts has left is Pawlenty, a boring conservative. Check this video out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sn4wrRg2kgg

He is boring, but he seems a like a decent guy. And if Biden goes around being flip and smug, Pawlenty may be the antidote McCain needs.

Is Layne stuck on a tarmac somewhere? I’m concoined. It’s the most Important Weekend in the History of America ever, and he’s not posting. Oh, the humanity.

Over very spicy lasagna tonight, my dinner companions were discussing how we all grew up with Biden on the Sunday morning teevee. We grew up in politically diverse households, but all recognize Biden (however we feel as rational adults about his politics) as a political constant in a time of whatevs: He has always been there, yapping away. His opinion, whatever it was, has always been broadcast, so presumably it should have mattered to us (well, less so since cable, and even less so since the internets). But, it always mattered to him, and he was always honest (at least, by DC standards). So, hats off to him.

Maybe what the Obama campaign really needed was human flaws, and Biden was a way to assure them, in a measured way. (Shakespeare, LOLZ)

[re=67838]professor.cj[/re]: Wow, Biden was there for those moments we all remember:

Bobby Riggs losing to Billie Jean King in 1973; “Keep on Trucking” t-shirts; the 1979 ABBA tour of America; the Duran Duran invasion; the national enshrinement of Phoebe Cates’ tits; the trauma of New Coke; the Tupac/Biggie feud; the Anna Nichole tragedy; the collective excitement for “Speed Racer,” the movie; countless horses stuck in a ditch…

Through it all, he was there. A constant. Ready to offer comforting words. Like a warm jacket on a chilly Delaware night of tax-free shopping.

The headline, “It’s Official: Here’s Your ‘Vice President,’ Biden,” is thoroughly deceiving. To become vice president, Mr. Biden must be elected as such. Right now, he has been selected as the Presumptive Democratic vice presidential candidate. Not to get technical, but there’s a difference.

I realized tonight why I had such a sinking feeling — heard a d knell — when I heard the news, even though I like Biden. He’s Obama’s Lloyd Bentsen. Funny, smart, wise. A clear sign to many that Obama knows he’s not enough. Should have gone renegade and risked pissing off some of his base to keep up the show of confidence.

I was alive to hear Lloyd Bentsen in that debate with Quayle, and my friends, Biden is Bentsen.

Ken Layne,

Finally. I don’t think I’ve been on here for a month. I keep seeing all this crap about Joe Biden as Obama’s VP pick. Now, there is a ticket that looks backwards! He didn’t really even vet Hillary. My prescriptions of Diazepam, Codeine Sulfate, Tincture of Opium and over-the-counter-NyQuil have softened the blow a little. (Oh, and four cups of chocolate pudding.)

You say, well, not a lot really, but: “Anyway, welcome Joe Biden! You will fuck this up in a hundred ways, tomorrow.” You are such an optimist! I thought he did a good job of starting that today, but with my mix of drugs (all legal), I’m happy to vote for Midge, even if he doesn’t know when his next feeding is or how many houses, condos and nursing homes Cindy owns. Thankfully the US Open is the next two weeks, giving me a little time to digest this turn of events. I don’t think is particularly wise to pick a better VP than you would be president.

Do I feel bitter? Naw, I can’t feel a thing. I hope the strep is going, going, gone by the time the convention starts, so you can enjoy it.

Sincerely and respectfully,

Mr-Clark

The American people are not giving politicians political cover or motivation to vote against the patriot act, immediate pullout of Iraq, or impeachment. Not enough Americans are pressuring Washington DC. 2006 wasn’t enough. Americans think we can drill themselves out of high gas prices. Talk about going full retard!

I am perfectly happy with the Obama-Biden and I am happy I don’t have to justify Walnuts (cough..Keating Five) and his embrace of the Bush administration. “Gore and Bush are really the same.”
“Bush won’t nominate really bad SCOTUS nominees, after all Reagan was responsible for O’Connor.”
“We have to send a message so the Dems will realize they need to move away from the center.”

That worked out well. Lessee- is there anyone out there who would really say, in light of the last 8 years, that Bush and Gore are the same? One won a Nobel, the other signed off on torture. Yup! no difference there.

SCOTUS nominees? Hmmmm…Alito and Roberts aren’t exactly the moderates that we were promised, are they?

Dems moving to the left? HA! The only lesson the Dems learned from 2000 was that they should move farther to the right. Which is why your crop of potential VP nominees who HADN’T voted for the PATRIOT act or the war was pretty damn slim.

Mike Gravel went Libertarian (!), and progressive saint Kucinich has an absolutely horrid record on abortion rights(a position he flipped on when he decided to run for pres), and believes in the healing power of crystals. Sorry, that totally knocks him out of contention (I didn’t even have to mention the UFO sighting or his elfin stature).

ok, i am well aware mothermaven that its the people that didn’t put the pressure on about the patriot act and the iraq war, but i certainly wrote my representatives in congress. there were TONs of polls out there showing what the american people thought about the iraq war, and our congress, especially the DEMS ignored us. because they’re sell outs. because this is all an act. there is no left or right. really, everyone in congress should wear patches with who supports them financially on their power suits, as well as the logo of the secret societies they belong to, kinda like race cars. then we’ll see pretty quick the facade.

sorry, i’m way past this left and right thing you guys. i know too much. i don’t care if the aliens dennis kucinich sees invade our country, our rights should never be sacrificed. there is NEVER a good enough reason. so anyone who voted for the patriot act should be scorned. not celebrated. Those basketball moves are going to be needed.

mothermaven August 24, 2008 at 11:56 am

While the majority of Americans didn’t like how this war went down and realized we shouldn’t have gone in, you overestimate how many Americans wanted to withdraw from Iraq and are vulnerable to appeals to fear. Even the republicans and hardcore FOXNEWSHEADS have been forced to admit “mistakes were made.” The sad fact is that the majority of Americans watch fox and send chain emails on how Hopey must be a Muslim because he is “so exotic.”

Everyone knows that it is just a matter of time before we get hit again by terrorists and to have your name as someone who voted against the patriot act would be just asking to be blamed for not doing enough to protect our country. We can understand that we can be attacked with or without the patriot act, but most Americans think the only way to be safe is to give up freedoms. Most Americans don’t know the contents of our constitution or Bill of Rights (except for maybe the 2nd Amendment). They have no idea why they should care about those contents. Majority of Americans will trade rights for security 9 out of 10 times.

My congresswoman, Lynn Woolsey is part of the anti-war triad with Barbara Lee and Maxine Waters, and she will tell you that the rest of the country doesn’t really support de-funding the war, pulling out of the war, or many of the anti-war positions that many of us feel strongly about. It is not that those who share our views are not being heard and recognized by Congress it is just that we are outnumbered and have to figure out how to make the case to our fellow Americans.

Actually, I do care about the who UFO/Kucinich thing. When Kucinich goes all Art Bell on us, it undermines all the important things he talks about. Now the only way Kucinich can be taken seriously now is ET makes a press conference. That is a shame.

So I got an e-mail today from MoveOn, who had their panties in a bunch over a recent AP editorial by one Ron Fournier. The MoveOn team were upset that the AP had engaged in what they termed a “smear” of the newly minted Obama-McCain campaign. It seemed that Mr. Fournier’s sin (aside from being a McCain flack) was pointing out Mr. Obama’s mad dash to the right/center–hardly a smear in my book.

What follows is my open letter to MoveOn over said “smear.”. Enjoy:

Dear Mr. Green and the rest of “the team,”

I’m not a fan of Ron Fournier or of John McCain, but it seems every time an editorial fails to sing hosannas about the Obama campaign, I get an email from the wolf-PAC that cries “Smear!” In light of Mr. Obama’s vote in support of FISA and choosing a running mate whose record of supporting the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq (not to mention the lies that got us there) is well documented, and several other shifts to the right (or were they really shifts at all?), I do not find it the least bit inappropriate to call the Democratic nominee out for his embrace of the status quo. Given the amount of cash that Wall Street has pumped into the Obama campaign, I won’t be surprised when I see a great deal of status quo, no matter who wins the (s)election in November.

Please keep me on your subscriber list. Since I quit watching TV, it’s some of the best entertainment going.

Just askin…… Not looking to be the guy to fill that slot. (not that I couldn’t).
