REPEAL THE 19th AMENDMENT! That old white lady at Salon says we all better start being nice to the “washed up old white women” who lost with Hillary. [Salon]
Obama should promise to submit legislation, in his first 100 days in office, to require a major network to put on re-runs of “The Golden Girls” at least one day a week in prime-time (but before 9:00 when Hillary’s supporters mostly go to bed.)
As far as I can tell, no polls have yet been done on what these “18 million” do given that there now actually is a Democratic candidate.
Rather than assume without evidence that there are 18 million people hanging out, willing to vote for no one until they get a proper invitation from Obama or a coded permission message from Hillary, why don’t we actually ask people over the next few weeks?
If, say, within a week of knowing that there is finally a Democratic candidate, and 80% of those 18 million have already said, “Oh, okay, well, yeah, I vote Democrat, so, uh, yeah, I’m going to be voting for Barack Obama,” we will be having a very different conversation about “the 18 million”.
I wish someone would point out that some of those 18 million voted prior to her campaign falling apart, and probably wish that they had voted differently. Others just voted for her out of preference. If Edwards, Richardson, Biden and Dodd supporters can figure out that they need to vote for Barry instead of Walnuts, I think that Clinton supporters can too. Unless the article is about their inability to grasp how elections work )which is possible).
Obama could also promise that all men who cheat will have to get “DOG” tatooed on their foreheads. Or that cats be our national mascot. Or that Lifetime original series always star Valerie Bertinelli. Or that high heels would be outlawed. Or that “No Fat Chicks” hats and shirts be banned.
ReelectTilden: Heh Heh, Grampa Simpson! Maaaatloooock! That was great when Matlock came to town and all the seniors kicked his ass and stole his pills!
shortsshortsshorts: Hey! Soccermom aged people are still too young to join the army of invisible bitters. We’re desperately clinging to our youth through Hopeful Barry. Not that I’m a defensive or anything but GET OFF MY LAWN!
floraway: …what? Some of the “18 million” might not be part of a cult of personality and just, you know, regular voters? I think that concept is RADICAL and DANGEROUS!
Okay, now I read it and I pissy. You don’t get to be excused for your racism because you feel like you’ve been discriminated against. Reasonable older white women are not screaming and ranting. They are not taking this personally, but realizing that this is how elections work. My mom is 55 and white. She loves Barry, and feels like he represents her- because he supports the issues that matter to her and inspires her. But then again, she isn’t racist and she doesn’t blame all of her problems on men.
All those who said they would vote for McCain if Hillz lost are now revising their statement to say, they are now going to vote McCain if Hillz doesn’t get to skip to the front of the lines at Disney World.
Ah, yes, Hills had her pants suit beaten off her and it’s Obama’s fault for being so meanly competent. Meanie! Winning ..with strategey!.. and all. How dare he! He should apologize for winning. Bummers.
The article says that the “18 million” feel “left out by the Obama coalition” and blames Obama (as the small, senile percentage of the 18 million do) for media and Wonkette sexism. Listen, Obama has been NOTHING BUT GRACIOUS. The “Obama Coalition” has always welcomed the Hillz voters, and we still do. We need them to win in November. If they feel left out it’s because they’ve been acting like crazy tantrum-throwing toddlers for the past few weeks. If they can calm down and a speak slowly and clearly, I’m sure we can get them a nice Obama onesie.
The Real JR Revisted:
See, you’re going a little too old, these are plucky gals, just over their menses, who wear pantsuits for their glamour shots at the mall, sometimes with an over ornate cowboy hat, if they’re feelingreally zesty…
My mother, who fits into the Hillary supporter demographic, said she was sad about the whole thing because Obama’s victory meant the country was more sexist than racist (if you follow that logic, then, Bill Richardson’s failure means we really hate Latinos). She also said that she’s been really disappointed in Hillary lately because over the past few weeks it was more and more obvious she only cared about herself. My mother did not seem to put 2 & 2 together, however.
I was also listening to the Randi Rhodes show on Air America and some Hillary caller called to bitch out Randi for being anti-Hillary and for criticizing things Hillary did. When Randi asked her if all those things she criticized Hillary for was worthy of criticism, the caller agreed and so just whined about how it wrong of Randi to talk about it.
confusionanddelay<: I am scared to death of you folks, so tonight I will get with a group of friends into an old car and throw a pumpkin at your mailbox, and vanish into the night.
“after winning almost 18 million votes and essentially tying Obama in the popular vote, I think Clinton earned at least 24 hours to think about her next move”
She had the previous *month*, during which the democratic world was begging her to come down off her drunk and accept that she’d already been eliminated.
Obama needs to promise to commit NASA to build a time machine, which he will use to travel back in time to 1972 and ensure that ERA is passed, at which point in time the Pantsuit Regiment of Women will consider his application for their support.
Good luck in 1972, son of a Luo tribesman! Think Florida’s a pain now…wait til you wrassle with Anita Bryant!
Second of all… there is no grand sexist conspiracy against your candidate. She voted for Iraq, and she’s completely unpalatable to independent voters. That’s why she lost.
The Real JR Revisted: Maybe if Obama ammended the Constitution to have never have the Hallmark, Lifetime and We channels canceled, will they be satisfied?
Oh, and to have the Oxygen Netowrk studios burned down, because Oprah owns it and she’s cleary sexist.
UGH, why did I actually have to go read that tripe? “Certainly when she was accused of “pimping out” her daughter Chelsea on MSNBC he had a great opportunity to come to her side, and he missed it.”
And *Certainly* when Hillary invoked RFK’s assassination in June as a reason to stay in the race, she *Certainly* rose to the opportunity to look like a total fucking bitch, but that, and pigeonholing Obama as “The Black Candidate,” not getting the votes or raising enough money *Certainly* didn’t have anything to do with her losing. Noooo, it’s *Certainly* got to be some kind of sexist conspiracy!
A few months ago Joan Walsh expressed some concerns about posters calling a politician a “fucking whore”. She said she didn’t want these people reading Salon. So I cancelled my subscription and lurk on Wonkette all damn day long, where that sort of thing is encouraged, if not de rigeur.
“Beyond Christian’s deplorable reference to Obama as an ‘inadequate black male’ was a wail worth hearing. She also said, ‘I’m proud to be an older American woman!’ I can feel her pain.”
If we’d called it a “wail” they be up in our cheese cakes calling us sexist. But that’s besides the point. After the inadequate black male business you could’ve pulled her tongue out by the roots and I wouldn’t have felt a thing. Racist old biddies = No sympathy from me.
Wow. Read the article and can’t help but note a stunning lack of awareness there of the fact that Hillary took a very low road in her campaign, favorably comparing the Republican nominee to her Democratic opponent, then using Osama bin Laden in a negative ad against her opponent. Add to that her eagerly exploiting the perceived gaffe about bitter, God and guns and, to any independent observer (to say nothing of Obama supporters who fit not at all into her calculus), and Hillary lost all her credibility as a Democrat. Which makes me doubt that the women who flocked to her side are Democrats, either.
Call me crazy, but… that actually sounded reasonable and well-considered to me. Seriously, are we making fun of her because she thinks that millions of disaffected female Democrats might be a problem for Barry, or that Hillary was mistreated by bloggers and pundits because of her gender?
Botswana Meat Commission FC: Joan actually did say specifically that she knows Hillary didn’t lose because of sexism. Her point is that sexism has left many of Hillary’s supporters royally pissed off. After seeing some of the loonies at the Rules and Bylaws committee, I can believe that.
No doubt Obama will have to woo the old bitters, but are we seriously supposed to believe that Harriet fucking Christian is actually worth listening to? My God, if wooing the Hilltards means embracing racist jackasses like that, screw ‘em.
Welcome to the 21st century, ya freakin’ idjits.
Jewdishoowary Square: It seems that Barry is doomed in the eyes of folks like the RBC mob. If he’s conciliatory and praises Hilz, then he’s a smooth talking panderer out to trick them out of their votes. If he speaks out against sexism, he’s a big phony who secretly hates women. I think this angry group has gotten a lot of press because it feeds into the sexist “hysterical bitch” stereotype, but I don’t think they make up the majority of Hillary voters.
We’ll see over the coming months, how many of them maintain the current level of rage.
Mediahohoho: Hear, hear! This nomination was Hillary’s to lose, and that’s exactly what happened. Her followers can point fingers at instances of sexist remarks from pundits and bloggers, but those were FAR outstripped by her near coronation as Queen of the Dems prior to the debates. She came across as typical politician over the last several months, while Obama won hearts and minds. What’s to be bitter about?
While I’ve never disliked Hillary, this whole stubborn refusal to listen to numbers and play by the rules gives some credence to the “reason and accountability” insult to women. Even worse, we’re all just silently listening to these old bitters who keep on harping on it! You’re not fighting with your husbands, ladies - you can’t nag your way into the White House.
All the stuff about ex-Hiltards jumping to McCain is Silent Majority-Style Bullshit, the “18 million” meme in particular. That’s 18 million voters who’d prefer Hilly Monster, not 18 Million shitheads who only read books where the author’s name is bigger than the title and who otherwise won’t vote period. You get one Harriet Christian, feed her half digested feminist thought and pink vodka til she screams, and somehow it becomes an indication of something other than what it was: One Jackass’s Death Rattle. That said, Barry does need some of the olds for November. If nothing else, they don’t tend to have shit else to do on Election Day, so the chances of them turning out to actually vote are good.
Beyond Christian’s deplorable reference to Obama as an “inadequate black male” was a wail worth hearing.
This is maybe the single stupidest thing I’ve ever read. A bitter old racist yells bitterly old racist things. Case closed. Her “wail worth hearing” was that she was infuriated that a black man beat Hillary, fair and square.
Joan Walsh, 1965: “Behind the burning crosses and lynched victims were some complaints about forced busing we would be wise to hear.”
RuperttheBear: Beyond Christian’s deplorable reference to Obama as an ‘inadequate black male’ was a wail worth hearing.
So I think what Ms Walsh was trying to say is that we need to look beyond the surface of atrocious behavior, like bigotry and closed mindedness, to look at the pain such behavior masks. It’s an interesting argument…it sounds vaguely familiar…like, maybe, something that Barack Obama once said at a fundraiser in San Francisco? And was then mercilessly mocked, hounded and misinterpreted by the campaign that is now “wailing” for compassionate understanding.
Shoot, it’s a good thing that Barack Obama is a nicer person than I am, cuz I would be on CNN doing the Linda Blair right about now. You get what you give, Pantsuit Regiment of Grandmas!
Sorry, I just couldn’t read past Clintards being “angry over her mistreatment.” No one mistreated Hillary except Hillary and her sycophantic advisers and supporters - not least of all Bill.
Joan,
Your candidate ran a crappy campaign. Get over it. And fuck off.
Yes, Obama will have to pitch a little woo for the old bitters. And we are going to help him. It is a temporary concession to the end of getting Obama elected. These people are going through Kool Aid withdrawals, they are angry and hurt. HRC did these people a disservice, if we remember our manners, (not here, of course, but you know) and give them a little more credit than they deserve, Obama will have an easier time of it. And isn’t that more important? Yes, it does suck, but only for a little while.
Ever since supposed Hilltards began threatening to vote Rethug unless Hill won, I assumed it was a closet-Rethug campaign. Joan Walsh and Harriet Pseudo-Christian did nothing to dissuade me of that– I know there are plenty of Ladies Who Lush on the Dems, but I don’t think 18 million of them have killed off enough brain cells to confuse Walnuts w/ Hill. Now, if McCant somehow persuaded Hill to be HIS veep. . . . (gagging and general horror)
i don’t have the energy to come down on ole joan walsh right now as i’ve already spent too much time bitching her out in the letters of her own magazine. (though i did bump into old wonkette “friend” chief payne there and busted him for a troll!)
she has ruined what was at one time a good online magazine.
We shouldn’t neglect Walsh’s comparison with Jesse Jackson. Because everyone remembers how Jackson did everything he could to lead his voters to believe he had an excellent chance at the nomination long after Dukakis had wrapped it up. In 1984, the choice of Geraldine Ferraro for VP was widely seen as a ‘diversity’ concession to the Jackson folks. So maybe Obama should choose Deval Patrick?
Joan Walsh is of COURSE outraged. Her daughter is graduating from high school, and will be leaving her to go to college. She’s trying to expand her pundit career, but as she gets ready to turn 50, and without Arianna’s TV presence and millions of dollars, it’s not going as well as she’d like. And despite everything she’s doing to elevate Salon and make it fair and balanced for all, she’s facing increasing criticism. HOW UNFAIR!!!
But the cherry on top is that a man has effectively stolen the nomination away from Hillary Clinton — a smart, capable, educated woman who, just like Joan, has worked hard all her life, raised an accomplished daughter, and faced down years of criticism, only to have her dreams fade away at the prime of her life.
Yes, Obama’s hijacking the Democratic nomination is a slap in the face to every woman, but none are more outraged than women like Joan and me: the millions of mid-life and older women, smarter than nearly everyone else, working harder than nearly everyone else, and yet, feeling ourselves invisible, due to unspeakable sexism and obstacles…and all along, getting criticized and attacked instead of rewarded.
Yes, we women are volatile and angry over the sexism Clinton has faced — and that they face every single day — and they have every right to be outraged.
Women are the largest Democratic constituency. Winning without support from these women — these white Democratic women who are understandably feeling angry, insulted, and bitter — will be impossible for Obama.
But there is a solution. Joan has outlined it, but she didn’t make it clear and specific enough. Joan mentioned “a few simple pointers,” but she needs to spell it out for Obama and the Obamabot/Obamanaics/Obama Boys.
Obama must apologize.
And he must apologize a lot.
In fact, if he takes Joan’s advice, he should plan on apologizing from dawn to dusk, day in and day out, until November. Yes, Barack Obama has a lot of apologizing to do. Here is just a few of the many things Joan Walsh thinks he should apologize for:
* Apologize for being African-American
* Apologize for being younger than Hillary Clinton
* Apologize for being a good speaker
* Apologize for being inspiring
* Apologize for speaking out against the war
* Apologize for attracting young people
* Apologize for attracting intelligent people
* Apologize for attracting millions of donors
* Apologize for having a Muslim father
* Apologize for having a Muslim middle name
* Apologize for becoming a Christian as an adult, because we know he only did this for political reasons
* Apologize for joining Trinity — even though it’s one of the most popular churches in Chicago — because we know he only did this for political reasons
* Apologize for knowing Reverend Wright, or calling him his pastor
* Apologize for previously attending any church where Father Pflegl has spoken
* Apologize for not quitting the church sooner
* Apologize for quitting the church after saying he wouldn’t
* Apologize for not denouncing Rev. Wright earlier
* Apologize for denouncing Rev. Wright after saying he wouldn’t
* Apologize for Geraldine Ferraro being demonized, getting her feelings hurt and her reputation trashed
* Apologize for making Harriet Christian so unhappy and for being “an inadequate black man”
* Apologize for the fact that some black people have supported him solely because he’s black
* Apologize for the fact that some intellectuals have supported him solely because he’s smart and educated
* Apologize for the fact that it’s his fault that women have lost a chance at having a woman president
* Apologize for the fact that it’s his fault that middle-aged and older women feel like they are irrelevant
* Apologize for the fact that some people supporting him have called some people supporting Hillary racists
* Apologize for personally causing an angry white female backlash
* Apologize for every sexist attack on Clinton, no matter who perpetrated it
* Apologize for every sexist attack on Clinton’s white female supporters, no matter who perpetrated it
* Apologize for every sexist attack on female journalists, no matter who perpetrated it
* Apologize for every sexist attack on bloggers who’ve occasionally tried to defend Hillary or critique him, no matter who perpetrated it
* Apologize for every single reader attack on Joan Walsh
* Apologize for anyone who thinks that Hillary, Joan Walsh, or any woman is a “washed up old white woman”
* Apologize to every woman who has been the subject of “dismissive, derisive references to bitter old white women”
* Apologize for quashing the feeling of female pride about Clinton’s quest
* Apologize for overshadowing the historic nature of Clinton’s presidential bid
* Apologize for overshadowing Clinton’s lackluster stump speeches
* Apologize for every incident of sexist disrespect faced by Clinton and her female supporters, including Joan Walsh
* Apologize for any denials of such sexist disrespect on the part of himself, his campaign, the media, his supporters, and everyone in America for that matter
* Apologize for Chris Matthews
* Apologize for Keith Olbermann
* Apologize for Jonathan Alter
* Apologize for Howard Fineman
* Apologize for Ted Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Oprah, Rahm Emmanuel, and every single prominent public official or celebrity who has supported him or endorsed him, thereby disrespecting Hillary Clinton
* Apologize for not speaking out when MSNBC said Hillary was”pimping out” Chelsea
* Apologize for not speaking out when the media questioned whether Hillary’s tears were real
* Apologize for being pro-choice, thereby backing McCainocratic women into a corner in November
* Apologize for being against the war, thereby backing McCainocratic women into a corner in November
* Apologize for being in favor of improving the economy, thereby backing McCainocratic women into a corner in November
* Apologize for planning to appoint liberal Supreme Court justices, thereby backing McCainocratic women into a corner in November
Joan Walsh gets it. She knows what it will take for Obama to win. The question is, does Obama?
Obama should promise to submit legislation, in his first 100 days in office, to require a major network to put on re-runs of “The Golden Girls” at least one day a week in prime-time (but before 9:00 when Hillary’s supporters mostly go to bed.)

This is a lot of nonsense.
McCain will just promise Matlock reruns 24-7 FTW!!!
They’re doing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUyce6224Mk
Wild…I bet it’s a joke though. I hope.
Obama should give them all foot-rubs, like their favorite “safe” Negro, Cliff Huxtable. Then he can sing a duet with Lena Horne (she’s almost white!).
No one can overcome the soccer mom demographic. Armed with minivans and a recent divorce, they are a force to be reckoned with.
That whole story just reeked of “White Diamonds” by La Liz…
Unless I read my constitution incorrectly, their votes only count as 5/8ths, so it’s actually 11,250,000.

So the general consent here is that no one likes Christians? Okay, I’ll roll with that.
Dave J.: It’s true. We never hear about white resentment.
populucious: There’s some sketch comedy in there, punning on “Pantsuits” and “Panzers” and HRC as . . . forget it.
Just I’m sure. I’m a man, so it’s still alright if I vote for Barry even if the old ladies hate me for it, right?
Ever since supposed Hilltards began threatening to vote Rethug unless Hill won, I assumed it was a closet-Rethug campaign. Joan Walsh and Harriet Pseudo-Christian did nothing to dissuade me of that– I know there are plenty of Ladies Who Lush on the Dems, but I don’t think 18 million of them have killed off enough brain cells to confuse Walnuts w/ Hill. Now, if McCant somehow persuaded Hill to be HIS veep. . . . (gagging and general horror)
Hey guys, what is it about “fuck with the pantyhose Democrats and you’ll be feeding the (gold)fishes” you don’t understand?
masterdebater: Dude, what do you mean “even if” ? That’s your raisins de etres.
i don’t have the energy to come down on ole joan walsh right now as i’ve already spent too much time bitching her out in the letters of her own magazine. (though i did bump into old wonkette “friend” chief payne there and busted him for a troll!)
she has ruined what was at one time a good online magazine.
shortsshortsshorts: Those with the Borderline Personality Disorder as standard equipment are particularly nasty.
* Apologize for being African-American
* Apologize for being younger than Hillary Clinton
* Apologize for being a good speaker
* Apologize for being inspiring
* Apologize for Chris Matthews
* Apologize for Keith Olbermann
* Apologize for Jonathan Alter
* Apologize for Howard Fineman
