HILLARY CLINTON

Jesus Saves America After All!

“WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic party officials said a committee agreed Saturday on a compromise to seat Michigan and Florida delegates with half-votes after Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton failed to get enough support to force their positions through.”

Fair, great, it’s over, HOORAY! But…

Clinton’s chief delegate hunter Harold Ickes angrily informed the committee that Clinton had instructed him to reserve her right to appeal the matter to the Democrats’ credentials committee, which could potentially drag the matter to the party’s convention in August.

“There’s been a lot of talk about party unity - let’s all come together, and put our arms around each other,” said Ickes, who is also a member of the Rules Committee that approved the deal. “I submit to you ladies and gentlemen, hijacking four delegates … is not a good way to start down the path of party unity.”

Fuck Harold Ickes. After this decision, however — which is about as fair to everyone as can be, considering the 4-state pledge that all candidates agreed to before the primaries — Clinton cannot appeal to the credentials committee, which would convene at the convention, without ruining her standing within the party. They’ll stop her after the last states vote on Tuesday. It’s over. Again.

This is a first in the US. “Half votes.” The one year the Democrats should have waltzed into the White House, they seem determined to lose, to throw down on racism vs. sexism, to raise incredibly serious idealogical issues but without any sign of policy or platform. And this is going to get a Democrat in the White House how, exactly? Oh, yeah. It won’t.

  13. JimNewell says at 8:42 pm, May 31st, 2008

@Black Cat: We’ll see how far it goes! Maybe Bill is starting to get a little worried about his legacy, finally…

The worst (and well… probable) way to look at this is that Harold Ickes thinks he can do it, and needs more time. That’s what I’ve heard is the Dark Clinton Gossip. If they appealed it would give him all summer to try to persuade ALL delegates — pledged and super — to vote for Hillary at the convention.

I honestly believe they won’t buy it.

If the Florida and Michigan delegates “won” by Hillary!(TM) only get half-votes, I think the only fair recourse is to relegate Obama’s delegates down to 3/5 votes. Under this formula, Hillary!(TM) is the clear winner.

What the fuck is up with all the political pundits saying that the Democratic Party is going to be unified at the convention? What planet are these people living on? Did they not just hear all of those livid irrational Hillamonsters chant “DEN-VER! DEN-VER!”? Clinton supporters have no shame, no boundaries, and certainly no sense of reality. Hillary and her klan of Satanic reptiles are going to see this out to the BITTER end. You thought 1968 was bad! 2008 is going to make that election look like a Disney movie. The Clintons are bound and determined to get back in the White House and if it means completely ripping the party to shreds until there is no way Obama can win in the fall and thus setting up the scenario for her to run again in 2012, than they’ll do it. The Clintons are power-hungry, ruthless villains who are always looking out for their best interests. The Clintons should just form their own party.

@Novaload: This is a first in the US. “Half votes.”

Um, actually it’s not new at all. You might recall that the Republicans are doing exactly the same thing to Florida and Michigan. According to this history of convention delegate apportionment, the “half vote” idea goes back to at least 1852.

States have been penalized or rewarded in delegate numbers for all sorts of things in the past. Interestingly, the Democrats added a bunch of half-vote at-large delegates in 1924 in order to - wait for it - increase the number of women delegates at the convention. (I guess the thinking was the state parties would be more likely to name women if they were only getting half a vote anyway.)

Since when was the Jeremiah Wright controversy, Michael Pfleger, accused of being a Muslim, and bitter-gate considered a “free pass”? You sure as hell don’t hear the media reporting about Hillary’s church (which is a cult called “The Family”). No, no, no. That would be “sexist”. Being a staunch femi-nazi, would you please enlighten me as to why you think Barack Obama is sexist? Also, since when did Hillary start caring about what those supposed “hard-working whites” think? Oh yeah! It was when she started getting her ass handed to her by a black man! But don’t worry. Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June.

Face it. You can’t stand the fact that a white woman, especially when her last name is “Clinton”, is losing to a black man. Your beloved queen is not going to become the first woman president, not because people are sexist, but because she is a lying Clinton (which is redundant). As a woman, I would love to be able to vote for a lady, but not this lady.

Actually, I from Jalopnik. Sweety–oh, wait, that’s Obama’s term for women.
I only shifted, as a desperate Democrat, to Clinton because Obama’s foot was stuck in his mouth too much. Sweety. “Typical white person.” That and he’ll get eaten alive by the Republicans because he has no experience. Because he and his wife are hardcore separatists. (Read her thesis?) He had a chance to be a uniter but he didn’t.
And what low moves wouldn’t Obama pull to get elected? Who/what hasn’t he thrown under the bus when it got inconvenient? He only bothers to mention his white relatives when there’s political hay to be made. So many Democrats are projecting their own ideals onto him.
The Republicans are, I’m sure, hoping he’s the nominee. Karl Rove will beat him like a drum. Dean and the other Democrats stood by and let this all get out of control because the Democrats have no leadership as a party. Because certain forms of liberalism forbid criticism of anybody, but is very pro photo-ops and sound bytes that will look good at re-election time. I’m sure there must be a few Dems around who are sorry they threw John E. away so easily, or Dean, for that matter.

  68. loquaciousmusic says at 12:27 am, June 1st, 2008

If McCain is elected, we can count on a few things happening:

    1) A Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.
    2) The repeal of federal abortion-rights laws.
    3) The continued forward progress of school voucher programs.
    4) A lengthy occupation of Iraq.
    5) Additional tax cuts for wealthy Americans.
    6) Possible military intervention in Iran and other Middle Eastern nations.

I’m straight and single and male, so I don’t have to worry about points 1) and 2). I have public school certification and currently teach in an independent school, so there goes 3). I am past the legal drafting age — and would be passed over because of nearsightedness anyway — so goodbye to 4) and 6). And I make a comfortable middle-class living, so 5) doesn’t affect me much. According to this list, I should be voting for McCain. None of his policies would affect me negatively. Some wouldn’t affect me at all.

But here’s the thing: I can’t vote for McCain because my view of the world is one that, over the course of my short 28 years here on Earth, has grown into this: when all is said and done, it’s not all about me. I care for the well being of my fellow Americans — gay, straight, black, white, male, female, rich, poor, young, old. My parents raised me to embrace qualities of empathy and compassion and to understand that there is a big world out there that I can make better or worse due to my own actions. Of the three candidates currently running, my world view more closely meshes with Barack Obama’s world view. That’s just the way it is.

I see Hillary Clinton’s campaign as mirroring McCain’s because both look inward. This divisive battle in the DNC makes that all the more clear: it’s all about Hillary. I don’t want a leader like that. I don’t want a country like that.

I’m sorry; I’m usually snarkier than this. This whole thing just gets me down.

  69. @loquaciousmusic: Geez Louise. Now I’m all Qonfused. “E Ego’S?” I thought that E was for Baby Eating. “E Eliminate them from the democratic process?” And I thought that one was for Encourage Enormous Pants.

@Novaload: I’m a southern woman who calls complete strangers “sweetie” all the time. It’s a colloquialism some of us down in the south and black folk like to use. I suppose you prefer old white men to call you a “cunt”; I guess it’s a regional thing.

Ok, now onto business. First off, Jeremiah Wright threw Barack under the bus. Barack gave him the benefit of the doubt until the media attacks being made in regards to Obama’s ties to Rev. Wright, etc. began to dominate the news cycles EVERY SINGLE DAY. Barack did what any sensible man would have done in his position and repudiated the Reverand’s remarks in hopes that he could then move on to talking about more serious matters. The politically expedient thing for Barack to have done would have been to denounce Wright and the church after the intitial comments broke. But, unlike Hillary, Barack has class and knows a thing or two about what Jesus taught.

Karl Rove, along with the rest from the far right-wing, can and will attack Barack on his supposed “inexperience” but not as much as they will be bringing up his pastor and his foreign policy views about talking with our adversaries and sending out more false e-mails about Obama being a radical terrorist-appeasing Muslim; however, that’s nothing compared to dirt they have on Hillz. Are you familiar at all with “Operation Chaos”? Of course you are. You’re probably a dittohead parading around as a “democrat”. Barack would be a fool to choose Clinton as his VP.

Oh, sniper-fire, no sniper-fire. Hoping Obama gets assassinated, making a historical reference. What’s the diff, right?

  73. Black Cat says at 12:53 am, June 1st, 2008

I have inferred that Clinton is monstrous and, since she is a woman, calling a woman a monster means I am a sexist. It does not matter that I believe McCain is monstrous too. Because anything negative I say about Clinton must be because she is a woman, and I therefore must be sexist.

The Clinton supporters who say every criticism of Clinton is sexist are doing more damage to women than I thought possible.

You may be right that Obama has been too damaged by this process to beat McCain at this point. But, hell, I’m damn proud of the Democrats for sticking with him despite the mountain of stinking shit Hillary and her throngs of sleazy, morally and ethically bankrupt mouthpieces have spewed upon him day after day, week after week, month after month. Over and over again she, her surrogates and her “family” have mis-underestimated the ability of us elite, educated folks to use the internets and the youtube to fact check their disturbing lies, subtle-as-a-brick-wall smears, and endless Calvin Ball tactics. That’s what really lost this for her. Not her race; not her gender; not her stupid, hideous clothes (Maggie Thatcher was not a freaking fashion plate — sister had BALLS!). No, what lost this for her is that this time, in this election, we (warning, warning, sap alert) have places like Wonkette, (gulp) Politico, even hacks like (gasp) freaking Drudge, that ensure that Clinton-style politics (”punching your opponents in the face” with lies, and then cleaning the mess up later) cannot succeed like they ALWAYS had in the past. So, again, maybe you’re right; maybe picking Obama is a stupid, naive gesture doomed to failure. But you know what, just the fact that we were still capable of such a gesture has (I know, I know — pathetic) filled my heart. And, finally, yes, style does matter (though the ways in which we articulate someone’s utter lack of it may be crude). It’s not clothes or looks that give one style; it’s something you must be born with.

This is a first in the US. “Half votes.”

No, it’s not a first at all. Half votes among the Democrats go back
officially to 1852, and unofficially even longer, when states would
send more delegates than they were authorized, just because they
could. Republicans have had half votes from the start - the crucial
point in Lincoln’s nomination in 1860 was when he reached 230 1/2 votes.

Parties have awarded and penalized delegates for all sorts of
reasons. Commonly, states get awarded additional delegates if they
have voted consistently for the party in congressional or presidential
elections. My favorite example is that in 1924, after woman got the
vote, the Democrats added a bunch of half-vote at-large delegates,
in the hopes these would go to women and attract them to the party. I
guess the thinking is that women were more likely to get the seats if
    they were only half votes.

There’s a nice history of how delegates have been apportioned at:
    http://www.thegreenpapers.com/Hx/NatDelegates.html.

  95. Novaload says at 10:12 am, June 1st, 2008

@Buffy & Hildegard: Points well taken, but I wasn’t intending to be funny. I was amazed at the ongoing negative coverage of Hillary constantly, constantly on every major media outlet. Whereas Obama got just no major coverage for “typical white person” etc. It was like he farted at a fancy dinner–everyone pretended it never happened. The issues I’ve seen with Obama are self-generated. “I, too, was born on an island” –right. Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
And the deeper problem is the Democrat’s “idealism” will set the country back at least another 4 years. There has to be a bigger picture than a fan club for this or that person to get in the white house–get the White House back, that should be the goal.
And it is hard to be funny about this–it was so exciting for the Democrats to win seats and hear Nancy Pelosi talk about the coming changes and then to find out the only thing that happened was NO party unity and just snippets on Dem X, Y, or Z asking a really tough question at a Senate hearing but zero action–but no problem, because X, Y, and Z got their sound bytes for the next campaign. Losing the White House will be a disaster. In any sane set up, Clinton and Obama would be running mates in some order–any order–as 1 and 2 most popular in the party, to get the goal of the White House, not of having “my personal fave in the White House”–but I seriously doubt the Obamabots will go for that.

  96. Black Cat says at 10:37 am, June 1st, 2008

@Novaload - Just because Obama and Hillary are popular does not mean that one should be the VP candidate. There is a reason why we don’t just have the candidate who comes in 2nd take the VP position. It’s because the P and the VP need to work well together. They need to complement each other.

@Novaload: I know I’m not supposed to talk to you anymore, but most Clinton supporters aren’t dumb enough to refuse to vote for Obama. Most Clinton supporters aren’t batshit insane Harriet Christians. Most of them prefer Hillary’s health care plan, or think she’s tougher or more experienced, or have fond memories of the 90’s, but would gladly vote for any Democrat. And you’re doing your fellow Clinton supporters a disservice by making them all look like they’re totally irrational.

Also…damn. When people started talking about how Hillary wants to sabotage Barry so she can run in 2012, I thought that was a ridiculous conspiracy theory. I was like, “Come on, guys. She’s not Satan. She’s still a Democrat who doesn’t want to see a Republican get elected.” But that really is exactly what she’s doing. She has to know she can’t get the nomination. And she has to know that even if she did get the nomination, there’s no way in hell she’d be able to win the presidency.

@ronaldpagan: actually it seemed that the people here were making them all seem irrational. I was trying to show that is not the case in every case.

@ronaldreaganshair: I guess it’s easy to dismiss your dissonance by dismissing anyone who objects to Obama as a “racist.” If you think race and gender aren’t going to be front and center in this election, you are naive beyond belief.

Maybe someone could step beyond the Obama adoration to figure out why the party has come to this and how to fix it. Everyone brushes aside the questions about what Hillary supporters will do with “Oh, they’ll get over it” like there was no issue or they’re idiots with shallow convictions. The party has to unify if it’s going to win. So far it’s been dismissive, not inclusive.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3I64m0×6wI

  133. Harvey Birdman says at 4:41 pm, June 1st, 2008

@Novaload: serious question (oh this poor thread) because I’ve been trying to get a straightforward answer on this from my Hill-now-McCain ladyfriend: when you say that it’s naive to think that race won’t be front and center at this election, do you mean that US Americans are too racist to elect a black man?

And if that is the argument, can you see how that a blanket assumption that US Americans wouldn’t vote for a black man (an assumption which ignores the polls) would come off less realpolitik and more…umm…racist?

  134. Novaload says at 4:54 pm, June 1st, 2008

@Harvey: Factually, yes, I believe there is a lot of racism (and sexism and a lot of other isms) in the US. I think there is more than people talk about/admit to. Do you think there isn’t?! Do you read about the Aryan Brotherhood? I’ve tooled around on some of the web sites and you can look at various polls (CNN had one with 88% saying yes, race would be a factor). Even Craig’s List can be an alarming social thermometer.

So the answer, regardless of what you or I or anyone else thinks, is that the US population may indeed have enough racism to defeat Obama; and that if the choice is white man/black man, the Repubs will have a massive turnout. Not that they all think McCain is great. I shudder to think what Rove and others have been working on — it will be one of the ugliest campaigns ever. The people voting in Nov. with be the 30+% who STILL think Bush is fine plus all the people who gave him his second term and plus every quiet racist in America.

  135. ronaldpagan says at 4:55 pm, June 1st, 2008

    @Novaload:

If you want a president who never puts his foot in his or her mouth, you’re going to be looking a long time. Didn’t Hillary do that when she mentioned Bobby Kennedy’s assassination? Didn’t JFK do that when he called himself a pastry? I think Barry’s pretty adept at thinking on his feet.

And also, it seems like you might be a woman. If so, you know what it’s like when men - even cool men - will often say things about women that make you go, “Sorry, dude. Not acceptable.” I don’t think either “typical male” or “typical white person” is a good choice of words, but the sentiment makes sense.

And I’ll illustrate this again with a confessional anecdote. So I was campaigning for Obama in Cleveland and taking a cigarette break decked out in campaign swag. This bearded black guy walks out of the convenience store and asks me something that sounds like, “Do you have another bunnn?” I go, “Sorry, this is a cigarette, not a blunt. Do you want one anyway?” And he goes, “I was asking you if you had another Obama button.” I don’t consider myself a racist (I smoke blunts sometimes!) but most white people aren’t as stereotype-free as we like to pretend we are.

  136. Novaload says at 4:55 pm, June 1st, 2008

@Harvey: Also, I think it’s been proven true that what people say in a poll and what they feel at heart and what they do in the voting booth are quite different. All but the most hardened racists will not say, “I’m a racist.”

  137. Novaload says at 5:21 pm, June 1st, 2008

ronaldpagan: Good points. Yeah, they all make gaffes. But what would have happened if Hillary or McCain or Edwards or Dean or any white politician had said “typical black person”? There would have been a firestorm of major proportions. They’ve been tossed out of office for such comments. The media silence was deafening when Obama said it.

  138. Harvey Birdman says at 5:24 pm, June 1st, 2008

So the bottom line is that he can’t win because he’s black. Right?

I’ve picked up a similar argument that a woman would never get elected by US Americans except for Hillary because of her experience and name - so if she doesn’t win than it’s unlikely that any woman would ever win.

  139. ronaldpagan says at 5:31 pm, June 1st, 2008

@ Novaload: See, this is why I’m arguing with you, because you listen to people and don’t sound like a troll. But “typical white person” is different from “typical black person”, just like “typical woman” is different from “typical man.” Groups who have been oppressed have more license about what they can say about the groups in power.

I also think Obama’s context - an explanation of his nuanced race speech - made it clear that he wasn’t dismissing or stereotyping white people. And I was surprised Hillary didn’t get more attention for saying “hardworking voters, white voters.” I feel like I was the only one going, “Jesus Christ, that’s the worst thing she’s said in the entire campaign.”

Also if you are a feminist, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t ever consider defecting to McCain or staying home. If you look at NARAL and Planned Parenthood, Barry is just as good for women’s rights as Hillary, despite his penis.

  140. ronaldpagan says at 5:34 pm, June 1st, 2008

Harvey Birdman, I think it’s weird that the same people who say sexism is worse than racism in this campaign are the same ones saying that a black man is unelectable.

  142. Novaload says at 5:43 pm, June 1st, 2008

@ronaldpagan–I’m not a troll, I assure you. Overall it’s almost tragic, hell, it is tragic that Obama, Clinton and McCain are the “cream of the crop” in the democratic process.
Time will tell if he is electable, that’s a factual question that can’t be debated, I suppose, because the facts aren’t in yet. This is even more depressing: I think if a Dem gets the white house, that Dem is in serious danger of being a one-termer because the Bush extravaganza of a mess is going to be so hard to clean up, to even BUDGE in the right direction that the Dem will look like a loser. I can just hear repubs “Well, you guys were going to fix everything and you’ve had 4 years–you know they will say that. The next president will be reaping the Bush wild wind. Any sane person would find it overwhelming to contemplate. I know it’s only further blasphemy, but I almost think a Repub deserves to live in that debris. Only some, like McCain, wouldn’t mind.

ladymacbeth: I’m open for suggestions. I think it you want to unite the party you might have to try and get Obama and Clinton on the ticket. I don’t have any illusions that he is not going to get the nomination; I don’t know if either of them would even consider a joint ticket. But if not Clinton, then who? A white guy? If I were Clinton I would think that being the first woman VP would be a pretty good legacy but I don’t know if she would. What choice wouldn’t create more problems? Can they dust off Edwards and his $400 haircut at a time when elitism is a big issue? Gore said he absolutely wouldn’t run, ever, period, and he seemed believable. At one point I hoped he would, and then have a public coin toss to see if Osama or Clinton became VP.

@Novaload: I tried to post this earlier, but I guess it didn’t take–

    oops, ‘become’.

You have a point! Need edit/preview. Sorry.

btw, i obviously don’t think it was intentional on your part.

on the other hand, if you think that karl rove is currently planning a four month smear campaign against obama, what makes you think that he couldn’t do the same (or worse) to a billary candidacy? i’m just sayin’. you think karl will have a dearth of swiftboat shit to throw at the clintons?

It looks like a successful grafting of Hillbot to the Pillsbury Doughboy.

@ Novaload: I think you’re absolutely right about 4 years not being nowhere near enough time to clean up Bush’s mess, and I know people will be saying that. But 4 years would also be enough time for a McCain to fuck a lot of things up irrevocably…scary stuff. The longer we go without a Democrat, the harder it’s going to be for the Democrat who gets elected.

    @AudicityofHope:
You have hereby earned my utmost respect and admiration.

    @obfuscator: True, he’s ready for both/either.
@ronaldpagan: Indeed, America is hard to recognize even now, thanks to Bush. I sometimes wonder what it will take to get people pissed off enough to picket and or attack the white house, protest in the streets–I grew up in that tradition. There’s a theory that internet gives people an outlet and so they don’t take to the streets so much.
Thank you all for an informative discussion. I find this site hilariously and savagely witty but I suppose I reached a tipping point on this particular post and just had to jump in.

Hillary has finally, FINALLY proved she has a vagina. I’m sorry for the many comments I have made in the past that may have implied otherwise.

    @ronaldpagan: Hah!

  155. Servo says at 7:55 pm, June 1st, 2008

Is there a picture of Hillary that doesn’t have her big yap agape like a chick waiting for it’s mother’s regurgitated lunch?

  156. RonaldReagansHair says at 9:17 pm, June 1st, 2008

@Novaload: I agree that racism has played a larger role than, as a young person, I would have expected. People my age really just don’t see race like the older generations see it. But here’s some more food for thought: racism or no, our history would suggest that the country generally adapts to the idea of equal rights for black men before white women. (Think black men got the right to vote before women, and the civil rights movement more or less preceded women’s liberation.) Did you ever think that a “unity” ticket might be too much of a pill for this electorate to swallow? Especially if McCain, in response, picks himself a nice, youngish (but not too young) white, likeable, conservative male? This is all not to mention that Hillary Clinton on the ticket would get out the republican vote in droves. She’s one of the most divisive characters (female or no) in our political history — and her negatives are sky-high.

  157. RonaldReagansHair says at 9:19 pm, June 1st, 2008

@Servo: it’s because she’s always mouthing “hello” to some imaginary acquaintance she notices in the crowd — no matter that there is absolutely no possibility that she is surprised to see some “old friend” requiring this response in every single bloody appearance she has EVER made.

    OK, back to the snark….
Everyone, go back and look at the photo at the top of this post. Now, Imagine that this is some season 4 or 5 of Sopranos and this is some new, chick capo who we have never seen before but who is presented like a major character.

The dude on the right in the look-alike outfit would be the one to give you the double tap to the forehead.

I command you, unclean spirit, Hillary Rodham Clinton, along with all your minions (definitely you Ickes, you fucker) now attacking this servant of the People, Barack Hussein Obama, by the mysteries of the incarnation, passion, resurrection, and ascension (that’s Greek for legit vote counts) of our Lord Jesus Christ, by the descent of the Holy Spirit, by the coming of our Lord for judgment, that you tell me by some sign your name, and the day and hour of your departure ….

C’mon, commenters, if we don’t do this together, the exorcism won’t work …
