Thousands of dockworkers from Seattle to San Diego didn't show up at work today, forcing the closure of all 29 ports in the Western United States — including the busiest American ports at Los Angeles and Long Beach. What the hell?
"We are supporting the troops and telling politicians in Washington that it's time to end the war in Iraq," said the dockworkers' union boss, Pacific Maritime Association president Bob McEllrath. The Longshoremen's union is also protesting today.
The whole-day shutdown was planned back in January, the AP reports.

Holy shit, get the strikebusters!
...and the economy of China is unilaterally crippled. Huzzah.
As if we needed more proof that The Wire is coming true.
Longshoremen are gay, liberal atheists who hate America? Who knew?
Hey, those dockworkers are *contenders*.
Caption: "OK, guys, I've chained myself to the fence, and... hey! WHAT THE FUCK?!?"
@loquaciousmusic:
Where's ZIGGY????
Brilliant! Tell these guys they're un-American, and they'
ll bankrupt Wal-Mart.
That that, "National Law Day."
Well, this is going to help the inflation and recession thing from spiraling out of control.
I think replacement workers can be found to press buttons and get $85/hr
Wait, how did they know that the Iraq war would still be going on all the way back in January? Something smells fishy.
A May Day shut down of the docks to end the war, wow. This sounds like Paris '68. In solidarity with the troops, I am not getting to my fucking e-mail, either.
@knife: A friend dated a longshoreman because he would take her out to fancy restaurants all the time. They make bank.
huzzah! workers of the world unite!
@baldbaby: this has nothing to do with the war and everything to do with upcoming contract negotiations, if you read the LA Times article
wow, that's pretty cool.
and during vietnam the hardhats demonstrated to keep the war going, now our blue collars are against it.
So did union officials take the day off from skimming the pension fund?
all the more reason to build that NAFTA highway and bring all the cargo in through Veracruz. where's my tinfoil hat?
Their bosses were seen cruising the crowds in from of Home Depot...
@RaptorAvatar:
"front" dammit. That's why you don't outsource spelling.
That's how we roll on the West Coast, Bitches!
The swarthy gentleman in the photo seems to be taking a leak.
Daddy, does this mean the terrorist have won?
Once again the lumpen proles are in the vanguard of the struggle.
What's that? bzzzbzzzz
Oh.
They just wanted MayDay off and thought that if they made is sound "political," nobody'd dare dock 'em a day's pay.
@knife: Let's just hope that's not an electrified fence.
Where is Ronald Reagan when you need him? I'm sure there are plenty of out-of-work air traffic controllers who would take the dockworkers' jobs.
@Dr. Spaceman: If only.
@Botswana Meat Commission FC: The Greek is behind it, I'm sure.
Just because this is a useful tool for the impending contract negotiations, doesn't mean...oh of course it does.
I should've taken today off too.
@olofpalme: Yup. Good coffee, good weed, and pissed-off longshoremen. Such was my Portland childhood.
...holy shit...
That's how you make a statement.
@Lionel Hutz Esq.: Yes. :(
A friend in Seattle told me that they were staging FEMA/Homeland Security games up there today. Was IS going on?
@ForTheTurnstiles:
Don't forget the best Ale, Stout and Porter this side of England!
I'm going to slap an elderly person in protest to the Iraq war.
@shortsshortsshorts:
If they voted for Bush, I'd say that is a legitimate form of protest.
@olofpalme: Or any of the other d-bag presidents over the course of the last century that helped pave the way for this epically lame moment in American history. Thus I feel slapping an elderly person is not just morally justified it is down right patriotic.
Those dockworkers are real dorkworkers.
Thank you, thank you. I'm here all night.
@elburrito: Hell yeah they're gay--the entire shipping industry is gay. Aerospace, too. And the railroads.
Finaly! The Bush Administration gets swift boated!
Not exactly Harry Bridges action but it will do for now.
This is so totally awesome.
It's probably one of the most effective anti-war protests of the decade. Wonder if we'll see it on the leading news headlines?
Just kidding. (We won't.)
@RubyJi: I;m protesting recent forms of kitty-litter yesterday if you may be interested?
