From the same folks who brought you video of Rudy’s BFF John Deady comes video of Obama’s staff trying so damn hard to control the Obama message that they try their darndest to control Suzanne Goldenberg, a reporter for a British Labour newspaper. It, um, isn’t very successful and her full piece, that starts off being about Obama’s optimistic message, turns into one chronicling the stupidity and paranoia of his staff. This is sorta especially off-message, since Obama is supposedly the anti-candidate-y candidate and message control is so old school, but there’s no irony to see here, people (especially once they boot you out of their offices or corral you in the press pen).
This comes on the heels of the news this weekend of some scuffle between Bill O’Reilly and an Obama staffer that was maybe sorta caught on tape but not really. I mean, far be it from us to side with O’Reilly, who we rightly abhor for being a sexually-harassing right-wing shill with nary an original thought, but blocking his shot is straight out of Campaign Staffer 101. It’s a dick move, but it’s one everyone does to try to protect their guy in this political game. The problem is, Obama staffers, that your candidate is running on not being part of that game — so by being controlling dicks to everyone from a reporter from a goddamned UK paper associated with Labour to Bill O’Reilly you’re actually doing more damage to Obama than a O’Reilly hit piece ever could. Chill the fuck out.
Obama’s paranoia factor: a GuardianFilms special [The Guardian]

She's obviously a reporter from the Fucking Annoying Middle-Aged Woman Daily News. Good lord.
"Can you check, because I've never been to a political rally where they do that, and you'd actually be infringing on my Constitutional rights. So if Barack Obama as a policy wants to infringe on my Constitutional rights of fair speech, that's fine, but I just want someone to tell me that's campaign policy."
Maybe if you were more of a fucking reporter and less of a sarcastic d-bag, people might be nicer to you. You know, catching more bees with honey and all that?
Oh this lady is a total fuck. Anyone who goes right to "my constitutional rights" the minute some control-freak volunteer with a clipboard bugs her is a total tool.
I have Hope(tm) that both parties will Change(tm). Don't taze her, "O"!
Besides, if she reports for the Guardian, where the hell is her Oxbridge accent? And why is she filming if she is a print reporter? And why does she sound like she should be working at a call center on Long Island? Sorry Megs, no freaking sympathy, and not just cuz I'm blinded by Obama Dementia.
I actually think Suzanne Goldenberg comes across as the biggest dick in the piece - I kept expecting her to say "Don't you know who I am, young man?" in the amazingly patronising tone she uses for the "I've been covering politics for a long time" line.
Perhaps it's journalistic karma - after years of McClellan, Snow, Perino, et al, the reporters get to fuck with the college-to-grad-school-age volunteers.
@Spence: I also think this is what you get when you screw with someone with a camera. Don't get caught doing it, be sweet as pie when you are and if someone is planning to write a fawning story about how your candidate reminds everyone of JFK, get out of the way and let her gush.
@Spence: It's the Guardian's tedious obsession with "delivering content across a range of platforms" - ie not just being a newspaper in the brave new world of the modern internets.
I think the last tape of note to come out of Guardian Films was of a Sheffield policeman NOT beating up a drunk woman who tried to hit him.
Reporter? Me arse. I'd say she's more like a real estate agent from Naples, Florida.
@Spence:
That's the Paultard m.o. If you read the Paulatardforums.com site*, they use it on each other constantly, too.
* I've got to stop using that site as leisure reading.
@HelloSunshine: But she's a reporter for the fucking Guardian ... she could do some damage. No reason not to give her a few minutes. On the other hand, if Barry starts asking for loyalty oaths at rallies, we'll have to talk.
She's been "covering politics for a long time", but she's picking on 20-something staffers who, two weeks ago, were probably still learning the difference between "vente" and "tall". Stupid bitch.
Also, the Guardian is not the only one saying it. Teach me not to check my email before I post.

That woman is obnoxious. She's intentionally crossing into sensitive territory (volunteer center during GOTV) and bickering with young volunteers about her constitutional rights in the last stressful moments of the NH campaign. Sure, she spins them as paranoid, but they also seem pretty polite to a pushy blowhard who's causing problems and brings a camera to chronicle it.
Anyone want to take bets on whether she supports Hillary?
...BARAKNIDS SWARM!!!
wait - we're supposed to think that obama staffers are paranoid??
they come as being patient and saintly! why does that simon cowell in a dress - oops i mean the reporter - think that she's supposed to get special treatment? she clearly was trying to harass and then get a *reaction* from the staffers and volunteers - she wasn't trying to report on the news, she was trying to make some news.
THAT'S paranoia? That's a 3 out of 10, par for the course for anyone who's dealt with the Bush Administration I'm sure. I'm going to need a more egregious case to excuse O'Reilly.
@Anonymous Lobbyist: All I saw was a couple of campaign slugs (who admittedly usually tend to be super-anal school government types) trying to keep this schmuck with a camera from wandering around bugging people who weren't actually either "men on the street" or spokespeople for the campaign. Volunteers are always a tricky grey area in campaigns, cuz if you just let journalists chat them up, they might decide to let loose with teh crazy, which is then attributed by less scrupulous journos to the campaign, which you then have to deny. See Ron Paul. They wanted to put her in a press area. Is this that controversial? I love it when people pull the constitution out every time someone frustrates their sense of entitlement. Next I expected her to claim that she would be calling her lawyer.
As a proud Barrytard, I'm GLAD the campaign has "real" staffers. Frankly, I think that's what separates his campaign from a lot of previous bullshit "grassroots" efforts (Dean, Nader, Paul, Perot, etc.).
As great as a charasmatic personality is, you still need a network of supporters/suckers willing to volunteer their time as precinct captains and an inner circle of experienced campaign advisors that can serve as a safety net to keep the candidate from doing something stupid (like showing your attack ad to the media while you simultaneously denounce it, or maybe like keep donations from white supremacists).
Hey Megan, I'm with you. We need to keep all out political campaigns fixed squarely on the media and how they affect the media. After all, it's all about the media.
@Mediahohoho: our
@catmybunny:
No shit - fucking limey bag lady with a camera crew wanders unannounced into a call center and starts chatting up college kids. What the hell did she expect?
@Botswana Meat Commission FC: I like to really think that this isn't just my deep throbbing love for Barry, but this woman really is a first rate nudje. It's the worst kind of Michael Moore sandbag journalism. It tells us nothing, except that Suzanne Goldenburg is able to push buttons. If I had been one of those clipboard slaves up there, I would have told her to shove her constiutional rights right up her long unused twat.
This is why I'm not allowed anywhere near candidates.
That reporter broad should totally get a falafel going.
@Spence: Click the link and watch the start of the video. Believe me, she had more of a hard-on for Barry than you do when she started. I just excerpted the pieces with staffers.
Kudos to the Obama staff for not knocking her the fuck out and feeding her to her cats.
As long as Stephanie Cutter stays the he*l away from the Obama payroll, I'm fine with any personnel decisions Bar has made.
oh please... you guys know better than this. This policy has NOTHING to do with Barack's message of changing politics.
Staffers aren't allowed to talk to media, because anything the say can and will be attributed to the campaign in general. "Obama staffer: Hillary id going down!"
You're all just pissed that America doesn't give a s#$t about what snarky bloggers -- who represent .00000000001% of the population-- have to say about Obama.
Go do something productive with your lives. We enjoyed having somewhere to turn while Bush was destroying America, but now we're ready to build it back up again.
It's also a classy move to immediately seek out volunteers who have been with the campaign all of six hours for your quotes.
But as she reminds us, this is not her first campaign. Cat Fancy, Horse Trader, and the East Rockaway Press all have deep political benches.
@Anonymous Lobbyist: Clearly you'll get no purchase with this crowd, Megan. Set temporary ban button on 'stun' in the event of an O-tard swarm of commenters post-NH.

@proud-paultard: .............
I had a comment about overzealous/entitled reporters and CYA campaign staffers, but it all seems so petty now.
@Spence: What do people expect from British journalists, where they've dispensed with the American fiction that a newspaper shouldn't lean a certain way politically (and not just the op/eds, I mean the WHOLE FUCKING PAPER) but take sides and are "the" Tory paper or "the" Labour paper?
Fucking brits with their useless u's.
When did Helen Thomas start colouring her hair?
why are the Obama people sooo uptight? they're winning aren't they??
all these dumb ass obama volunteers are the reason i never joined political type groups in college. it's just control freaks think they are important. i accomplished way more sleeping till noon.
i accomplished my ability to proof read... freaks that* think...
For a reporter, she doesn't seem to know much about her rights under the First Amendment. Or are these volunteers somehow magically part of the government?
As a smug Hillary fan, I will stfu except to say if campaigns and candidates aren't made more accessible, American political life is gonna wither. It's a chore to attend these rallies, having to go through a line just to show your support. Maybe we need a Parliamentary system, where there are more stars in the party and less obsession with Number One and Number Two. [Insert Republican Congressman joke here.]
@blogenfreude: Barry's been having people sign loyalty oaths for months...seriously, I am not making this up.
@proud-paultard: PP, you usually make more sense than 99% of the Paultards I've read. I just hope this post was a cut-and-paste job of someone's delusions. Don't start bring Teh Crazy now! The editors keep a syringe of Thorazine handy for posts like this one.
