San Francisco mayoral politics are bad. So bad, in fact, that actor and director Sean Penn once offered hunky-hipster attorney Matt Gonzalez $5 million to fund his war chest if he were to run as a Democrat against Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Penn’s pal Gonzalez, a former deputy mayor under Willie Brown who narrowly lost against Newsom in the last election under sketchy circumstances, said he wasn’t sure if Penn was kidding, but refused to switch parties (Why would he? The Greens are in vogue!). Anyway, Gonzalez was debating a run against Newsom, but has yet to develop enough of a drug or alcohol habit to play the rehab card.
