Former DC Mayor Anthony Williams introduced this now-beloved district-wide public holiday in 2004 to commemorate Lincoln’s freeing of Washington DC’s slaves a couple months before he freed all the slaves in the Confederacy (Washington was sort of a trial balloon, we guess).
There was a parade in 2004, but celebrations for 2007 seem to consist mainly of the extension of federal tax deadlines by one day. We don’t even know anyone who got the day off. How the hell are we supposed to celebrate emancipation at work? Now we know exactly how the slaves felt.
