Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington: Blonde Bombshell Explodes at One First Street!

by dlat

Today the Supreme Court is hearing oral argument in the case of Marshall v. Marshall, No. 04-1544. The case presents an important, difficult, and highly technical question about the intersection between federal and state jurisdiction in probate proceedings.

Still awake? Okay, this will perk you up: the voluptuous former Playboy model, Anna Nicole Smith, is going to the Supreme Court! The long-running litigation between Smith and Pierce Marshall, the adult son of Smith’s deceased husband, wealthy oilman J. Howard Marshall II, has made its way to the highest court in the land.

Anna Nicole Smith walks outside the U.S. Supreme Court, Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006, in Washington. Dressed in all black, former stripper turned weight-loss promoter fought her way through a throng of photographers and autograph-seekers on her way to a Supreme Court showdown in her bid to inherit her late husband’s fortune. [Wonkette's added value: the man on the right is believed to be one of Smith's attorneys, most likely Howard K. Stern. The angle isn't great, though, so there's a small chance it might be noted Supreme Court litigator Tom Goldstein, who also represents Smith.]

Correction: Oops! Goldstein actually represents the greedy, evil son who is trying to deprive a destitute widow of a fortune she so richly deserves. Sorry, this petitioner/respondent stuff can get so confusing!

As we type, the Court is hearing arguments in Smith’s case. Newly confirmed Justice Samuel A. Alito is thinking, “This truly is the best job in the world.” And Chief Justice John Roberts is wondering: “Girlfriend’s hair looks fabulous — who’s her stylist?”

(Okay, maybe not “fabulous.” A reader on the scene advised us as follows, shortly before 10 a.m.: “Freezing in line at Scotus. Just got knocked over by a cameraman as ANS shoved by me. Her hair looked greasy.”)

We’ll offer another report later in the day, after the arguments have concluded. If you were lucky enough to witness this spectacle, please email us with your detailed account! And photos, of course, are always especially welcome.
